Natural sound from slender tower speakers

You can count on the Polk RTi A5 for clean, precise music and high-impact home theater. This slender tower speaker uses patented Polk technologies for true-to-life sound, and its curved edges and real wood veneer finish give it a handsome, refined look.

A high-tech approach to accurate sound

This speaker's carefully designed drivers undergo laser testing to help identify and eliminate resonance points, ensuring smooth, accurate response. Its asymmetric cabinet helps it deliver rich, clear sound by combating vibration and increasing rigidity. Polk's exclusive PowerPort® technology reduces noisy air turbulence and increases low-frequency output. You'll enjoy clear highs, rich bass, and open, natural-sounding midrange.

Additional high-end features

Two sets of gold-plated five-way binding posts let you biamp or biwire the RTi A5 for the best possible sound. An anti-diffraction grille helps it deliver a large, three-dimensional soundstage with pinpoint-accurate stereo imaging. Adjustable spikes provide stability on both carpeted and hardwood floors.

Recommended center channel speaker: Polk CSi A6.

Recommended surround speakers: Polk RTi A1 or FXi A4.

Driver Technology

Dynamic Balance: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least amount of resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion.

Polymer Composite Woofers: The speaker features two 6.5" polymer composite woofers. Two 6.5" woofers have the surface area of a single large woofer with the low mass and acceleration of small woofers, resulting in tighter, more accurate bass response. Each woofer uses a butyl rubber surround.

Silk/Polymer Tweeter: The speaker has a single 1" silk/polymer dome tweeter that provides clear, detailed highs. The tweeter features mylar bypass capacitors in the crossovers to extend high frequency response and improve detail and transparency. The also tweeter features low viscosity ferro-fluid cooling with a heat sink on the Neodymium magnet for superior heat dissipation, power handling and reliability.

Magnetically Shielded: The speakers are magnetically shielded, allowing you to place them near your television without distorting the picture.

Enclosure Design

Damped Asymmetric Hex Laminate (DAHLI) Cabinet Design: All-MDF construction with massive asymmetric cabinet bracing ensures a resonance-free enclosure for accurate sound. The asymmetric design is made from a 6-layer laminate with 5 viscous layers to create the optimal shear damping (OSD) system. The elegant styling aside, curved cabinets not only result in a stronger, more rigid and acoustically inert enclosure, but the curved walls also produce less audible coloration from panel resonances.

Power Port Venting System: The speaker has a rear-firing Power Port venting system built into its back plate for precise deep bass response. This venting system allows air velocity to slow gradually, vastly reducing air turbulence, and delivering greater bass efficiency than conventional ports.

Acoustic Resonance Control (ARC): Internal cabinet resonance can impart a "thick" character to voices. Polk's patented Acoustic Resonance Control port system overcomes this problem. In addition to the Power Port venting system, each speaker has a front-firing port that is tuned to suppress the internal cabinet resonance, resulting in smooth, natural midrange reproduction.

Anti-Diffraction Grilles: The floating anti-diffraction grilles minimize grille diffraction for spacious, 3-dimensional imaging.

Connections

Dual 5-Way Binding Posts: The speaker has two sets of gold-plated 5-way binding posts connected by gold-plated jumpers. Using the dual 5-way binding posts, you can bi-amp or bi-wire the speakers.

Mounting Options

Adjustable Leveling Spike Feet: The adjustable leveling spike feet that can be screwed onto the bottom of the speaker's attached base provide stability on any type of flooring. The spike feet adds approximately 0.875" to the speaker's overall height when screwed all the way in.

Specifications & Dimensions

Frequency Response: The overall frequency response is 30Hz-27kHz and the -3dB frequency response is 40-26kHz.

Width: The main body of the speaker is 8.375" wide but the speakers attached feet extend beyond each side of the speaker, giving the speaker and overall width of 10.5625".

Q
I want to pair these with a vintage Marantz 2252 Receiver. Are there any initial issues?
anthony  Jan 04, 2021

A
The Polk RTiA5 are very efficient speakers and have an 8 Ohm resistance and will produce excellent sound with a vintage Receiver.
james  Jan 04, 2021

These are excellent speakers. I have them matched with the CS6 and RTIA3's. The amplifier I have is the Denon AVRX 3700 which has a 105 watts per channel. I have the 5.2.4 with SVS prime for my front height and Polk TSI100'S as my rear heights with two Polk PSW 108 subs. The only issue that may be a problem is the watts per channel from the Marantz it shows 52 watts per channel. I am at the low end but for my use which is part of my theater system the volume in my room is quite loud enough for me where it is shakes the room. Depends on your needs.

Have a Yamaha 383 70 watts room is small 10x10 looking at KEF Q350 or POLKS RTI 5 ? Thx

I have not heard the KEF Q350 but I have the Polk Audio RTi A5 speakers with a 100 watt Yamaha in a 12x14 room and I am extremely happy with the quality of the sound especially the rich bass tones.

I have the polk RTI 5.These speakers are extremely clear and more than powerful for the space. Mine are in a space of 10 x 12 and they fill the house. I love them. You won't be disappointed.

A
I don't know the KEF speaker, but I can tell you that I'm very happy with my Polk RTI 5's. My room is 10 x 12 and my Denon pushes 75w. They sound great on their own but even better with a subwoofer.

Q
do you need an amplifier with these speakers?

No, did not have one when i bought them and they sounded good. Have since added a external amp and it took them to new heights.

Only if you need to actually hear it.

If you mean as in receiver...yes....this are speakers that normally operate off a receiver with a built in amp from my experience.

Q
Is this compatible with Yamaha RX-V583 / 581?
sriram  May 08, 2018

A
Yes, of course. However I would RECOMMEND a receiver that has an output of at LEAST 100 watts per channel (RMS). The Polks will work with dozens and dozens of home theater or stereo amplifiers. Compatible and PREFERED are definitely NOT the same thing, by any stretch. Best of luck, and hope this helps you out.

Mine are paired with a Sony STR-DN1030 receiver. Great sound, plenty of bass...which is what I was looking (listening) for. This speaker was on my short list as well as recommended by Crutchfield Advisor,...so I figured we both can't be wrong. And I was right!

They like a little power. They are fairly smooth, which I like .... not a pounder of a speaker. I really dislike speakers that bark at you. Give them adequate power and you'll be ever so happy you spent $ a few bucks more on the power/receiver. I would not pair them with any old 100 watt 5.1 receiver, they deserve better. I am using a Denon AVR-3313ci. Anything starting here (spec & $ wise) will do them justice. I prefer the open-ness of sound in detail that the Denon receiver delivers, over the Yamaha. The Yamaha is smooth and good quality as well but the Denon has a more detailed sound. This occurs based on the character as to how they are designed. The Harmon Kardon is way too bright IMO (also a character in their design and has been since the late 70's no matter what the model. Hope this helps.

Which would be the better the price is the same, polk RTI A5 or the Kliscph F-300 Black Lable?

Hello, my opinion is that the Polk's sound better, I exchanged mine for the RTI A7's, the sound is spectacular, if you can go up a few dollars you will be much happier, the Klipsch's are horn loaded and tend to sound shrill, also the Polk's are finished in real wood in all sides and hold up to 300 watts, the Klipch's get very loud, but ideally you want quality of sound vs quantity, the 7's rival my RTI A9's,
albert  Jun 10, 2020

Simply a Personal Opinion, but I don't think you would go "Wrong" with either speaker. FWIW: Purchased the RTi-A5s from Crutchfield last year, along with a pair of A3s and a CSi A6 center to replace an existing surround set (kept the Sub). Notes: 1) The Polks provide Significantly better sound than the older system - which we were (frankly) very happy with, providing a wonderful sense of "depth" and detail with an excellent surround sound stage. 2) The Cherry finish (real wood veneer) on the Polks is beautiful, and would make them much more "at home" in a LR setting than a set of black speakers. (if that matters, & Persona Preference, of course...) 3) Although difficult to judge without a direct A-B comparison, General Consensus is that the Polks sound better - and certainly Look better - than the Andrew Jones Pioneer kit - which is admittedly less expensive, but was frequently touted as providing Sound Quality Well Above their price point. (We have 3 surround set ups in the family that feature the Pioneers). 4) IF buying a surround kit, the RTi A3s are excellent, as is the CSi A6: the center channel was one of the decision points in favor of the Polks. 5) With all of the above: a Klipsch surround set was On Sale at the time, and were my first alternatives. The CSi A6 and (in all honesty...) the Appearance of the RTis won the day. 6) FINALLY - and again FWIW - the shopping experience with Crutchfield was also excellent. One of the A5s arrived with MINOR damage (the box had been punctured during shipping, leaving a small dent in the veneer), and Crutchfield customer service was wonderful to work with. We are trying to shift purchases to "smaller" and/or "local" sellers - as opposed to "blindly" buying from the Big River - and the customer service, from Pre-purchase to handling the shipping damage, means I would buy from them again even given a somewhat higher price.... Best of luck with your decision....

Hi, Only you can say which is better to your ears. For me personally, I much prefer the more laid back, warmer sound of a Polk Audio speaker to a Klipsch. All Klipsch speakers always sounded brighter than all others being compared to. It is a very different sound than Polk but even some Polk speakers labeled as bright like the RTi8, are still warmer when compared to any of the Klipsch offerings. For this very same reason I decided to go with Polk. Ryan

I have been a Polk Audio enthusiast for several years. They make exceptional speakers that not only cover all of the low to mid-range to high frequency responses, but the RTI A5s in particular do so with incredible accuracy across all platforms (analog, DVD, CD, etc.) with chest-moving power to boot. In addition, they are not as power thirsty as the slightly larger A7s. I have my A5s paired with a set of RTI A3 bookshelf speakers, and a CSi A4 center channel. Phenomenal all around. Also, all in the beautiful cherry wood finish. They are art pieces. Buy the Polks!

Q
Will these work well with Sony STR-DH190 or Yamaha RX-v385 receiver and which one would be better for these speakers running A+B with 2 Polk RTi4?
joseph  Apr 16, 2020
1 answer
A
I own a pair and run them through a Pioneer SX-1350 from 1974 and I am unable to turn up the volume past a 1/4 turn before the music is loud. Anything past 1/2 it's hard to stay in the room for any length of time. Great sound at low volume and no distortion at higher volumes. I have a 14" subwoofer and the combo works well. I'm guessing the RTi4's you have are a bookshelf speaker? You will not need those unless you are planning to run your AV sound through your modern receiver. I don't have that option with my antique.

Q
Hi. I'm looking to purchase the Polk Audio RTiA5 tower speakers. My question is my receiver is a Sony STR-De595 do you think it will be a good match or to much speaker for the receiver?

A
I run these speakers with a Harmon Kardon stern receiver that puts out less watts per channel that the one you reference and I have been thrilled with the sound these put out. I should also mention that i have a powered sub as well and use them mainly for listening to music .
keith  Jan 07, 2016
A
I'm not an expert or extreme audiophile, but when I bought my RT-5s I also upgraded to a HK3700 receiver. The combination of the two provides the lowest level of background noise and distortion that I've ever heard, and it's really one of the best aspects of the set. I generally prefer my music relatively quiet, but with such low distortion there is a frequent temptation to just keep turning it up. Good luck with your selection.
tobias  Jan 06, 2016
A
I am running these speakers using the receiver Onkyo TX-SR601, and they sound awesome. Some of the best speakers I've ever purchased. You should be able to compare the specs of my receiver with yours to see if they are comparable, but I doubt you would have a problem.
frank  Jan 06, 2016
A
They'll pair up perfectly. The Polks aren't too power hungry and if I'm right you've got 500 total watts to play with. They sound awesome with my 300 total watt Denon.
dario  Jan 06, 2016
A
I think these speakers will work well with any receiver. I have two separate pairs - one purchased around 2012 (paired with an old Nakamichi RE-10 receiver) and another in November 2015 (paired with a Yamaha RXV775 receiver) and not only do they sound really good, but they are made of furniture grade wood, so you really can't go wrong for the price, So assuming a tower speaker is what you are in the market for, the Polk RTiA5's should serve you well. Good luck

Thanks for your question. For information on comparing two or more models I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences and help you make the best choice for your system and your budget.

Q
Are these speakers worth the money? Are the highs and lows distinctive?

A
I can't answer your questions directly, but I can tell you I'm very happy with the speakers. I had some incompatible equipment, which led my older receiver to not handle my new blueray player's sound well; as a result, voices weren't coming through the speakers adequately. So I replaced the receiver and purchased a center speaker. Now all is in synch, and sounds great! I don't have surround speakers yet; that's the next step if I decide to go that far.

Yes, for me they were definitely worth the money. Bi amp them and they sound great. Would buy them again.

No. They are beautiful but, to me, the sound was muddy. I moved up to Martin Logan motion 12's (same price at the time) and was quite pleased but I was still disappointed with the limited sound stage of the folded motion tweeter. The ML's are very clear and well defined. However, I was still not happy so I ended up with Bowers and Wilkins 683's. Wow. I have heard a lot of speakers in my lifetime but these have pleased me beyond belief. Sound is like art, it is very subjective and changes as you get older. That being said, if you are young these Polk would be fine (I gave my to my son) but as your hearing becomes more refined they will leave you searching for better quality, especially in the highs and midrange. I often had to "rewind" movies because of missed dialog, poor quality mid range will cause that. Now I don't miss a thing. Good luck.

I personally was in the Stereo/Audio Retail business from the early 70's till 1985. I am pleased with these speakers .... a nice warm mid-range, not overdone ... the high frequency's are clear without over exaggeration. Bass response is extremely good. When played in stereo with a music cd that''s where they shine. I am using them in a 7.1 surround system and they do front imaging very well. So in all applications I am very pleased. Worth the money ... Yes !! Make sure you have enough amplification to drive them properly. A high quality AV receiver or separates is necessary. You will need to spend at least the same amount of $ on the receiver. Hope this helps you with your decision.

I have been very happy with these speakers and feel they are a great value. I use them for home theater with an older center channel and a polk sub. The lows are full and complimented by the sub. I also use them in stereo for playing vinyl. I turn them up pretty loud and they sound great with excellent clarity and distinct mids, highs and lows. Very happy with my purchase.
