Our take on the Polk Audio RTi A7

Great-sounding and great-looking

Serious music listeners and home theater buffs alike will appreciate Polk's newly designed RTi Series tower speakers. The RTi A7 offers top-notch sound quality, and its curved edges and real wood veneer give it a handsome, refined look.

Grille off shot

A high-tech approach to accurate sound

< Cross-section

Polk's PowerPort helps extend the speaker's frequency range.

This speaker's carefully designed drivers undergo laser testing to help identify and eliminate resonance points, ensuring smooth, accurate response. Its asymmetric cabinet helps it deliver rich, clear sound by combating vibration and increasing rigidity. Polk's exclusive PowerPort® technology reduces noisy air turbulence and increases low-frequency output. You'll enjoy clear highs, rich bass, and open, natural-sounding midrange.

Additional high-end features

Two sets of gold-plated five-way binding posts let you biamp or biwire the RTi A7 for the best possible sound. An anti-diffraction grille helps it deliver a large, three-dimensional soundstage with pinpoint-accurate stereo imaging. Adjustable spikes provide stability on both carpeted and hardwood floors.

Recommended center channel speaker: Polk CSi A6.
Recommended surround speakers: Polk RTi A3 or FXi A6.

    Driver Technology

Dynamic Balance: Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least amount of resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion.

Polymer Composite Woofers: The speaker features two 7" polymer composite woofers. Two 7" woofers have the surface area of a single large woofer with the low mass and acceleration of small woofers, resulting in tighter, more accurate bass response. Each woofer uses a butyl rubber surround.

Polymer Composite Midranges: The speaker has one 6-1/2" polymer composite midranges for smooth wide-range response with low distortion. For high performance durability, the midrange uses a butyl rubber surround.

Silk/Polymer Tweeter: The speaker has a single 1" silk/polymer dome tweeter that provides clear, detailed highs. The tweeter features mylar bypass capacitors in the crossovers to extend high frequency response and improve detail and transparency. The tweeter also features low viscosity ferro-fluid cooling with a heat sink on the Neodymium magnet for superior heat dissipation, power handling and reliability.

Magnetically Shielded: The speakers are magnetically shielded, allowing you to place them near your television without distorting the picture.

    Enclosure Design

Damped Asymmetric Hex Laminate (DAHLI) Cabinet Design: All-MDF construction with massive asymmetric cabinet bracing ensures a resonance-free enclosure for accurate sound. The asymmetric design is made from a 6-layer laminate with 5 viscous layers to create the optimal shear damping (OSD) system. The elegant styling aside, curved cabinets not only result in a stronger, more rigid and acoustically inert enclosure, but the curved walls also produce less audible coloration from panel resonances.

Power Port Venting System: The speaker has a rear-firing Power Port venting system built into its back plate for precise deep bass response. This venting system allows air velocity to slow gradually, vastly reducing air turbulence, and delivering greater bass efficiency than conventional ports.

Acoustic Resonance Control (ARC): Internal cabinet resonance can impart a "thick" character to voices. Polk's patented Acoustic Resonance Control port system overcomes this problem. In addition to the Power Port venting system, each speaker has a front-firing port that is tuned to suppress the internal cabinet resonance, resulting in smooth, natural midrange reproduction.

Anti-Diffraction Grilles: The floating anti-diffraction grilles minimize grille diffraction for spacious, 3-dimensional imaging.

    Connections

Dual 5-Way Binding Posts: The speaker has two sets of gold-plated 5-way binding posts connected by gold-plated jumpers. Using the dual 5-way binding posts, you can bi-amp or bi-wire the speakers.

    Mounting Options

Adjustable Leveling Spike Feet: The adjustable leveling spike feet that can be screwed onto the bottom of the speaker's attached base provide stability on any type of flooring. The spike feet adds approximately 0.875" to the speaker's overall height when screwed all the way in.

    Specifications & Dimensions

Frequency Response: The overall frequency response is 20Hz-27kHz and the -3dB frequency response is 35-26kHz.

Width: The main body of the speaker is 8.6875" wide but the speakers attached feet extend beyond each side of the speaker, giving the speaker and overall width of 10.6875".

    Fantastic Speaker

Written By KYFHO, Misawa, Japan on Saturday, February 04, 2012

I purchased the RTi A7's a while back and am finally getting around to posting a review. First of all, these speakers are absolutely beautiful! The cherry finish is top notch and classy looking. A lot of the reviews you read will say these speakers lack low end bass and that you will need a sub. "IF" you do not power these speakers properly, you will need a sub. However, if you power them with a minimum 125 watts of "high current" power from an external amp, you will be blown away. The majority of AVR's that overstate their power ratings will work, but they will not bring out the best these speakers have to offer. I am bi-amping my A7's with 305 watts from a Parasound A23 and Carver AV-705X amplifier and I tell you, I have more than enough bass to rattle the walls and upset the neighbors. The mids are very rich and the highs are outstanding (extremely clear). I have played these speakers to very high volume with zero distortion.

Lastly, if you do plan on purchasing the A7's and are planning on running an external amplifier, I highly suggest you research the different brands. There are many brands of amplifiers that tend to make the A7's sound overly bright so hit the different forums on the internet and educate yourself. Overall, two thumbs up for the A7's!!!!
    Pros:
Outstanding sound quality; Beautiful cherry finish; Can take gobs of power!
    Cons:
I have yet to find anything negative about these speakers

    Polk Audio RTi A7

Written By Joe, Decatur, Ga. on Friday, January 20, 2012

I bought a pair of these to replace some Infinity SM112s. I had them 20 years and they finally disintegrated and forced me to get some new ones. The Polk RTi A7s fit my price range and they were well worth the money. I use them more for music and they have great clarity from the highs to the mid lows. There's definitely a lack of deep lows, so it really needs a subwoofer. So I got a PSW111 and it sounds amazing. I actually really prefer that it sound better with a subwoofer than if it had adequate deep bass on its own. The cherry finish looks really nice too.

Awesome Speakers at a Great Price

Written By Jim, Central VA on Saturday, December 10, 2011

These speakers have a beautiful sound. They came out of the box sounding great and they keep getting better as they break in. They create a wall of awesome sound that has to be heard to be believed. I use them for both home theatre and music and they handle both jobs perfectly. They are a bit power hungry but if you give them the power they desire they can't be beat. These speakers are well worth buying.
    Pros:
Everything! They sound great, they look great and they have a great price.
    Cons:
    Can't think of anything.

    smooth and detailed

Written By Todd G., Columbia, MO on Monday, August 22, 2011

I purchased these RTiA7 about a month ago, and wanted to leave my review. They have gone from good to inspiring after breaking in. Natural, uncolored sound with wide dispersion so they sound good in every part of the room. A little power hungry, I drive with 125 watts rms per side, enough, and I like loud at times, but leaving me wishing my receiver would let me bi-amp with the two channels that aren't used while listening to music. I use a powered 125w sub to reinforce the lowest bass and ease the load on amp and speakers. I am loving these speakers. If you are a discriminating listener, have a strong amp and understand sound like this doesn't come in a tiny box, you will love these. I have no disappointments

They perform as expected because they are Polk's

Written By Roushguy, Palm Coast, Florida on Wednesday, June 15, 2011

I have long purchased products from Polk Audio over the years for home, boat and car. Their speakers have a clear signature that emanates solid and powerful base, clear mids and crisp but never harsh highs. As my title states, these speakers certainly maintain my expectations of value and sound.

    Polk Audio RTi A7

Written By Carl, Louisiana on Monday, March 28, 2011

I have had these speakers for a little over a month I cannot find anything negative to say. First of all, they look great and my wife was very happy to see they matched the dƩcor and of our house. The sound quality of these speakers have increased over the past month as they have broken in. At first I was concerned with the bass response but the bass has grown over the past month and I am now completely satisfied. Of course ordering through Crutchfield was seamless and the speakers arrived on time with no damage. Everyone who has seen and heard these speakers leaves my house impressed!

    PHENOMENAL in every way !!

Written By AndrewS, Waynesville, NC on Tuesday, March 08, 2011

Just purchased a pair of the RTi a7s from Crutchfield after weeks of searching, listening and reading reviews. These speakers are for all intensive purposes beautiful pieces of furniture of the best craftsmanship. Flawless out of the box. But what about the sound ? Very well balanced and getting better and better every day. The woofers will season in depth but the nice FREE 8 inch Polk Sub included with Crutchfield purchase rounds things out until then. Show some respect and bi-amp these. They are not your ordinary loud speaker and deserve nothing less. They are large but have a small footprint. I read so many reviews raving about these speakers and was skeptical. No more. Don't walk; run to Crutchfield.com and order these now. One more thing: Crutchfield's service was outstanding in an age of forgetting who the customer is. ajs

    Finally broke in

Written By DaveH, Savannah on Sunday, February 20, 2011

Picked these speakers up mid december "10 and tonight turned them on via HK3490 and IPOD touch, realized they finally broke in and the sound was rediculous. For the price you cannot go wrong, even my wife was amazed cranking 120 watts of MInus the Bear Dr L'Ling she said it sounded live!!! At first they were pretty bright, subwoofer balanced out, but now my sub will be an end table. The handle anything, TV, Movies, BD, CDs, mp3. Highly recommend the Polk Ai7 and with Cruthfield you can't go wrong. No sales tax. shipping and customer support...go to the brick building for test runs only!!!
