Our take on the Polk Audio Signature Reference SR6500

Polk Audio has taken elements from their highly-acclaimed LSi Series home speakers and brought them to your car. The award-winning Signature Reference Series component speakers will impress you with sound that's detailed, dynamic, and realistic.

The SR6500 6-3/4" component speaker system features special-design tweeters that broadcast accurate, natural high frequencies, with no annoying frequency spikes to color the sound. If installation space is limited, these versatile tweeters can even be mounted directly on the woofer cones to make outstanding 2-way speakers.

The air-injected polypropylene woofers kick out gutsy lows with superior control, and their extended frequency response allows them to blend smoothly with the tweeters. Butyl rubber surrounds form a rugged suspension for the cones, while the cast aluminum baskets eliminate resonances that can degrade sound quality. The powerful, compact neodymium magnets exert superb control over cone movement, while freeing up installation space.

High-performance crossover networks stabilize impedance as they distribute signals to the woofers and tweeters. The result — extremely accurate sound. Each crossover features four tweeter output levels — plenty of adjustment options to ensure well-balanced highs.

Woofer Features

Aerated Polypropylene (APP) Cone: The Polk Audio SR6500's woofers are constructed of Aerated Polypropylene, a mineral-filled polypropylene that has been "puffed up" with injected air to form a honeycomb-like structure. The result is a stiff, lightweight material with excellent damping qualities.

Surround: The cone is bonded to the basket with a soft butyl rubber surround. The injection-molded butyl rubber is tuned to absorb unwanted cone resonance. In addition, the surround is resistant to ultraviolet rays, temperature extremes, and humidity to add to the speaker's reliability and longevity.

Phase Plug: The bullet-shaped phase plug in the center of the driver ensures a smooth, flat, off-axis frequency response by preventing the high frequency sound waves emanating from one side of the cone from interfering with sound waves from the other side of the cone. The phase plug can be removed to convert the SR6500 into a coaxial speaker.

Basket: The woofer features a high-mass cast aluminum basket. The basket and magnet cover are one piece with heat sink fins that draw heat away from the voice coil, increasing power handling and reliability.

Voice Coil: The voice coil is wound around a 1-1/2" diameter low-mass, high temperature Polyimide-glass former. The large diameter coil contributes to the high bass output and high power handling of the driver.

Neodymium Magnets: The speaker uses a Neodymium magnet, which has the same magnetic flux power as a ceramic magnet 10 times its size.

Mounting Rings: Each woofer is equipped with two mounting rings which can reduce the mounting depth by as much as 3/4" when used together.

6" x 9" Adapter Rings: The woofers can be mounted in a 6" x 9" opening when used with the supplied adapter rings.

Tweeter Features

Ring Radiator Tweeter: The SR6500 has a 22mm (0.866") Ring Radiator tweeter, the same type as used in high-end audiophile home speakers. The Ring Radiator's ultra-light woven diaphragm is supported at two pivot points, with the voice coil attached approximately midway between the two pivots. Since there is a very small diaphragm area that is unsupported, there is less opportunity for the development of performance-robbing resonance. The phase plug, similar to the one found on the woofer, prevents phase cancellations, so you get a flat, smooth frequency response, both on- and off-axis.

Extended High Frequency Response: The tweeter's frequency response goes well beyond 20kHz: to 40kHz overall and to 30kHz at -3dB. This drives resonant peaks beyond audibility, and gives the speaker more overall detail and lower distortion levels.

Dual Neodymium Magnets: The tweeter has two Neodymium magnets to provide a powerful magnetic field for the voice coil, while still maintaining the tweeter's compact dimensions.

Faraday Cap: The motor structure includes a copper Faraday Cap on the pole piece to flatten the impedance curve, lower distortion, and extend and improve high frequency response.

Mounting Options: The tweeter can be mounted in a variety of ways. When the speakers are configured as separate components, the tweeter can be mounted in a straight flush-mount cup or in a 15° angled flush mount cup. In addition, you can remove the woofer's phase plug and mount the tweeter on the woofer as a coaxial speaker. Both straight and 15° angled tweeter posts are included with the system. When configured as coaxials, the tweeter speaker wire is threaded through the magnet and adds 3/16" to the mounting depth. The straight tweeter post adds a little over 1/2" (0.526") to the mounting height/tweeter protrusion, while the 15° angled tweeter post adds approximately 9/16".

Crossover Features

High Quality Components: The SR6500 crossover uses 1% tolerance resistors and capacitors to ensure the woofers and tweeters are perfectly matched to provide a solid, stable, and consistent stereo image. Air Core Inductors with Oxygen-free copper wire are used for wider dynamic range, contrast, and punch.

Zobel Network: The crossover includes a Zobel network, which flattens the system's impedance curve for a more efficient power transfer and flatter response.

Bi-Amping: The crossover's circuit board includes two jumpers which can be configured for single amplification or bi-amping. You can independently drive the woofer and tweeter with separate amplifier channels when the jumpers are removed. If driving the woofer and tweeter from the same channel, the jumpers should remain installed.

4-Position Tweeter Levels: You can adjust the output level of the tweeter at the crossover by positioning a jumper to one of four positions: -3dB, -1dB, 0dB, or +1dB.

Crossover Slopes: The crossover includes a 2nd order, 12dB per octave low pass filter for the woofer, and a 3rd order, 18dB per octave high pass filter for the tweeter. The crossover frequency for both the high-pass and low-pass filters is 3100 Hz.

Tweeter Protection: The crossover's Tweeter Protection device limits the current flowing into the tweeter, preventing damage to the tweeter when it is operated beyond safe operating levels.

Heat Sink: The crossover is housed in a heavy-duty solid cast aluminum chassis which acts as a heat sink for cooler operation and longer reliability.

Terrific sound

Written By Mark, Baton Rouge LA on Monday, January 26, 2009

These are beautiful sounding speakers. I'm an audio nut, and listen to speakers worth thousands of dollars at home. I have these hooked up to a Rockford Fosgate amp and they are really nice. I prefer the tweeters set to the -3dB setting in my car, a 2004 VW Jetta wagon. I have them crossed over at a low 63hz to the JL sub in the spare tire well (another terrific product Crutchfield sells--makes changing your tire a real adventure, though!). I'm using the head unit to power the rear doors stock speakers, but faded almost entirely to the front. The only thing better than these speakers would be to get them on sale! I did get the open box ones and they were in excellent shape. Contrary to what the Crutchfield installation guide says, you can get the woofers in the front door panel. Also contrary to what Crutchfield says, you can get a double DIN unit in the dash! I have the Pioneer avic F-90BT.

Top Shelf Sound!

Written By Michael, Illinois on Monday, December 22, 2008

I purchased these to replace my Infinity door speakers and added a Polk PA500.4 amp as well. My head unit is an Alpine CDA-9887. When I first put them in, they sounded horrible. This was expected as they have a long break in period. I've only had them for about a week or so and they are starting to get broken in. Even before they are all the way broken in, they are the best sounding car components I've ever heard. The highs are ever so clear! (Polk uses the same tweeters as they do in their $10,000 home theater equipment) The bass is amazing! It's extremely snappy. I actually have my two 12" subs turned off because they the SR6500s are so fast, and my subs muddy their performance at mid-low frequencies. I need to adjust my subs to only play under ~60Hz and let the Polks do the rest. I found that on a lot of songs, there were pieces of music I wasn't hearing before. For example, on one song, I thought there was only one drum beat, but it was actually two, one after the other.

One piece of knowledge: Don't run the tweeters without the crossovers. You'll blow them. I was testing them without the crossovers, before they
were installed, and blew one tweeter. Oops!

Final Verdict: Best upgrade for your sound stage without going into the $1000 and up range.

Polk SR6500

Written By Mozart, Oxford, MS on Sunday, November 23, 2008

I installed Polk SR6500 components as a replacement of Polk db series because I didn't like the tweeter bright highs in that model. I powered them with Polk 500.4 amp (90x4 rms). So far I can say that I'm totally satisfied with the sound quality. I played different music styles, Classical music, jazz, rock, reggae, metal.etc, and I was stunned by the clarity and the detailed worm sound coming from these. What excites me even more is the technical info catalog provided by Polk Company which says that you need to let these speakers break-in to get their best sound. That mean the sound I have now will get better and better. Bottom line, if you are an audiophile who is looking for best of the best in sound quality, then you can't go wrong with Polk SR6500 component.

you get what you pay for...

Written By michael, Norman, ok on Sunday, March 30, 2008

I have had some really good sterios in the past. I was looking for the best
speakers I could find to put in my car this time. I went to the polk audio
website and read all there reviews. I spent 1500 dollars for two sets of
these! If you can afford it? Buy two sets of these speakers. Do what ever it
takes to put a set in the front doors and a set in the rear deck lid. You
might have to cut some metal and door panels and it will make you made
before you get everything in! :) Have some kind of ability to equilize them?
Have a low pass filter set at 100 hertz. They sound bad at first!!! They have to be broken in. It takes awhile!!! I have them hooked
up to an alpine pdx 1.150 it is plenty of power for them. After a couple
weeks of jaming. The will start to impress you!!! :) Add a
killer sobwoofer and let the party begine! :) I have an aline pdx 1.1000
powering a jl audio 13w7 in there box. my car sounds better than any rock
concert I have ever been to now!!! :) You get what you pay for???

Crystal clear!

Written By Kevin, Sharpsburg, MD on Thursday, April 05, 2007

I was after the best sound possible when I stumbled upon independent test review's stating that these were close to perfect sounding speakers, and statements such as "you can spend a lot more and not find better sounding speakers". Well these were twice my budget, but I can honestly say it is the best investment in sound quality I have ever made. I have these on a 150 watt per channel Alpine PDX, I absolutely love these, I have heard details in the songs I did not know existed in my collection! Crystal Clear!

best SQ speakers

Written By steve, Pittsburgh, PA's on Tuesday, September 19, 2006

these speakers are amazing. There isnt anything out there that can beat these speakers or the price. The ring radiator tweeter first off looks amazing and even better after installed. they produce heavenly highs nice and smooth without being harsh or ear peircing. the woofer makes amazing mids. its not a sub so dont expect them to rattle your mirrors or annoy your neighbors. they will change your whole system however (in a good way) even if you have subs. mine are powered by an infinity 7541a amplifier sending 111 watts rms and these just eat it all up.
