Designed and built for exceptional performance

Polk carefully builds the TSx-series speakers using advanced manufacturing techniques and high-quality materials — they put a lot into them so you get a lot out of them. Each one boasts Polk's exclusive Dynamic Balance® drivers — a bi-laminate design of fiber-infused polymers sandwiched together to form a strong yet highly efficient lightweight cone for natural, low-distortion sound. Polk puts these advanced drivers through extensive testing to find and eliminate resonance points, ensuring that everything you listen to sounds clean and accurate.

Polk also paid special attention to the TSx crossovers, using a high-performance design with premium parts like Mylar bypass capacitors to deliver smooth and extended high-frequency details. Even the enclosures contribute to great sound. Their attractive cabinets use non-resonant MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) and non-parallel curved side panels to create a rigid, acoustically inert structure that effectively reduces audible coloration.

Driver Technology

TSx Series Loudspeaker: Introducing the TSx Series of loudspeakers from Polk; stylish and quality-built for high performance. The high efficiency TSx Series loudspeaker features a unique curved enclosure wrapped in a wood-grain vinyl. The loudspeaker employs Dynamic Balance tuned drivers and tweeters for realistic mid-range, deep, well-blended bass, and incredible detail - for a classic Polk sound that is naturally open, spacious, and clear.

High Efficiency Design: The TSx Series loudspeaker can be driven by practically any electronics, even the most modestly-powered amplifier or receiver. Whether you're connecting them to the newest digital receiver, or to your vintage amp, the TSx Series loudspeaker can produce sound that's spacious and clear, enveloping and realistic.

Dynamic Balance Drivers: The TSx Series loudspeaker uses Polk's Dynamic Balance Driver Technology for great sound. Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least amount of resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion. Using just the right materials enables Polk to tune out performance-robbing resonances before they occur.

Klipple Optimized Motor: Klipple Optimized Motor employs a laser and sophisticated software for large scale analysis of the TSx Series loudspeaker's drivers in motion. Using this state-of-the-art laser and software process, Polk engineers were able to optimize the speaker's motor structure, voice coil alignment, and suspension to yield the best possible performance.

Silk/Polymer Dome Tweeter: The TSx220B bookshelf loudspeaker features a 1.0" silk/polymer Dynamic Balance dome tweeter with a powerful neodymium magnet structure that delivers clear and detailed highs for realistic reproduction of vocals and instruments, without fatigue.

Bi-Laminate Composite Woofer: The TSx220B bookshelf loudspeaker features a 6.5" bi-laminate composite Dynamic Balance driver which is light and stiff with exceptional damping. This Dynamic Balance bi-laminate composite cone woofer uses a butyl rubber surround, polyamide voice coil, massive motor structure, and high-temperature aramid fiber spider to create a driver of exceptionally high efficiency, clear bass, better linearity, lower distortion, and greater durability.

High Performance Crossover: The loudspeaker employs a high performance crossover system for optimum blending and time alignment of the overall speaker. Mylar bypass capacitors are used to reveal extended high frequency details.

TSx-Series Timbre-Matched: All Polk loudspeakers are timbre-matched within their series, designed with the same components throughout, to achieve seamless speaker-to-speaker blending effects in multi-channel systems.

Frequency Response: The TSx220B bookshelf loudspeaker has an overall frequency response of 42Hz-25kHz, while the -3dB frequency response is 50-24kHz.

Enclosure Design

Curved MDF Cabinet: The TSx220B bookshelf loudspeaker utilizes a unique curved cabinet design which creates a stronger, more rigid and acoustically inert enclosure. The elegantly curved side panels, which create non-parallel surfaces, reduce unwanted internal standing waves for less audible coloration. Non-resonant all-MDF construction, with a 5/8"thick baffle, ensures cleaner, clearer, more lifelike sound quality.

Note: The TSx220B bookshelf loudspeaker is available in either a black or cherry finish.

Flared Port: The TSx Series loudspeaker features a critically-tuned, front-firing flared port. The flared port improves air flow and minimizes port noise ("chuffing"), while ensuring good low frequency extension with low distortion. This flared port design lets the TSx speaker reveal realistic, natural, full-bodied sound with rich bass.

Anti-Diffraction Grille: The computer modeled anti-diffraction grille minimizes grille interference, so it doesn't get in the way of your sound. This black cloth grille is detachable.

Connections

Gold-Plated 5-Way Binding Posts: The TSx220B bookshelf loudspeaker features gold-plated 5-way binding posts for excellent signal transfer. The 5-way binding posts will accept bare wire (up to 10AWG), pin-connectors, spade-connectors, and banana plugs (single or dual). The speaker terminals are color coded for easy identification between positive (red) and negative (black).

Mounting Options

Placement: Create an equilateral triangle between the speaker and the listening position. If you notice video distortion or discoloration, immediately move the speaker away from the video source.

Rubber Feet: The bookshelf loudspeaker comes with self-adhesive rubber feet so it will sit safely and securely on your speaker stand or shelf. The rubber feet add approximately 0.625" to the height of the speaker.

Wall Mounting: The TSx220B bookshelf speaker does not feature any type of wall-mount bracket or hardware. The optional PinPoint heavy duty side-grip wall-mounting bracket (121AM40B, sold separately) can be used to wall mount the speaker.

Q
I have a yamaha rxa840 with Polk tsx 220b speakers. The volume starts at - 80 and it doesn't start to get loud until -20 . Is this normal or is this how it is? At -20 it's still not that loud but is starting to.
jon  Aug 04, 2016

A
It all depends on what you definition of "Loud" is. But make sure you have your receiver setup to for the size of speakers that you have and the correct distance. Also make sure you are not in night mode on your receiver. I usually have my Yamaha at -20 to -24 when watching movies, but I am am also running floor standing speakers with dial tens.

Their sidewall is not flat so I wouldn't recommend to mount them horizontally. In any case they are great speakers

HI Dave. I own two pair of the 220s. One pair is mounted as expected; upright w/ tweet on top. The other pair is mounted horizontally on shelving in a slightly smaller room. I placed a foam block under the curved side of each speaker and aimed the speaker face slightly downward. Both set-ups sound terrific!
robert  Feb 12, 2016
A
You should be able to. The aren't flat on sides so they might lay weird.

Michael, I have the Polk speakers on a shelf system and they sound great. I don't use speaker stands. Kevin

Has anyone mounted these on the wall? I already have mounts, but you have to screw into the back of the speaker. I hesitate to do this unless others have done it with success.

Sorry I can't help you with the question. I have the speakers standing up on a shelf. They sound great for small speakers.

I chose not to screw the speakers to bracket. I placed the speaker as far back as possible and secure the sides with bracket.

The speakers come with a bracket already attached.

Yes, I have mounted them. Bought clamping mounts, and blue tac. No need to put screws in them. Just make sure to screw into studs, they are pretty big.

I have not mounted them on the wall. Might I suggest that you put up shelves and then put these on those vice mounting them directly to the wall.?

What is the use of Book self speaker? Is it good for home theater system.

After reading many reviews for several different bookshelf speaker manufacturers, I bought the Polk 220s and the Onkyo TX-8020 to drive them. I am a serious amateur jazz trumpet player. Music and listening go hand-in-hand. I was so happy with the Polk 220s I bought a 2nd pair! Both rooms are stand alone systems with terrific sound!
robert  Feb 12, 2016

Sam, I purchased these speakers for a stand alone stereo system, not a home theater, in an NYC apartment. Space was an issue. What I can tell you is that the sound is awesome and powerful from these small speakers. My receiver is the Onkyo TX-8050, also purchased from Crutchfield - Kevin

I use it as part of a home entertainment system and it meets my needs. It has all the volume I need for my den, which is about 18' by 20'. You might get slightly better clarity from standing speakers, but I doubt it. My one piece of advice would be to not go small with the sub woofer. That is the one piece of equipment that really gives the "movie theatre" feel in a home entertainment system. I upgraded from my first choice after talking to the representative from Crutchfield and am happy with the results.

Bookshelf speakers can be an excellent fit for a home theater system. They make phenomenal rear surrounds, but can also be used for front speakers as well. The Polk Audio TSx220 speakers are relatively big for "bookshelf" speakers. The cabinets are deep and heavy (well constructed), which enhances sound quality. These speakers have a ported design which also extends bass response. Overall, these speakers perform as well (or better) than most floor standing speakers. To get the best performance out of these speakers, I would elevate them on speaker stands (SANUS makes great speaker stands as well as AV furniture and mounts for flat panel TVs). The most important thing in building a home theater system is to match all of your speakers - don't mix different brands - and even within brand, be sure to get surrounds that are matched with your fronts and center speaker. Polk Audio has a terrific line of speakers at different price levels, so check out their center channel and sub-woofers too. If you use the Polk TSx220 speakers for both your front and surround speakers, you'll be enveloped in a very full, rich sound. If you have any questions about speaker matching, I'd recommend calling the Crutchfield support line to ask for a recommendation - I have found them to be quite helpful.

Absolutely, but it depends on the size of the room, how many subwoofers you plan using, and how much power your receiver is pumping out. In my family room, it's a small room, maybe 16' x 13', with one sub, and it works great. In a larger space, you may want to add 2 subs for more bass. The center channel speaker will handle most of the dialogue, and Polk makes some excellent ones to choose from. I have the Polk TSx150c, and I love it!
michael  Jan 17, 2014
A
Some use them when they don't have the room for floor standing speakers, and some use them as surrounds with a home theater setup. I used mine as surrounds. For my needs, I think they are great in a home theater system, but other may disagree.
bryan  Jan 16, 2014

I have 2 home theater set-ups in my home. I use a pair of bookshelf speakers in each set-up for the FRONT speakers. Quality bookshelf speakers work great in this application, unless you have a really large room which could stretch the sonic capability of a small speaker. I have both Polk RTi and TSx bookshelf speakers in my HT set-ups, and I am really pleased with their performance both for movies and for music listening.
kerry p  Jan 16, 2014

They can be used as part of a home theatre system. You will want to check with one of the Crutchfield advisors to see what the best combination would be for you particular situation. It may be that a good soundbar and subwoofer will do the trick.
