Our take on the Polk Audio TSx220B

Feel the impact of your music and movie soundtracks

Go ahead, turn it up! Then sit back and enjoy the lifelike vocals, snappy percussion, and surprisingly full-bodied bass response that Polk Audio's TSx220B bookshelf speakers deliver. Their 1" silk/polymer dome tweeters provide clear, spacious highs that stay gentle on the ears, even at higher volumes. And their 6-1/2" Dynamic Balance® woofers pump out impressive bottom end that'll keep your tunes rocking. They make a great choice for stereo music listening or a home theater system in small- to medium-sized rooms.

Designed and built for exceptional performance

Polk carefully builds the TSx-series speakers using advanced manufacturing techniques and high-quality materials — they put a lot into them so you get a lot out of them. Each one boasts Polk's exclusive Dynamic Balance® drivers — a bi-laminate design of fiber-infused polymers sandwiched together to form a strong yet highly efficient lightweight cone for natural, low-distortion sound. Polk puts these advanced drivers through extensive testing to find and eliminate resonance points, ensuring that everything you listen to sounds clean and accurate.

Polk also paid special attention to the TSx crossovers, using a high-performance design with premium parts like Mylar bypass capacitors to deliver smooth and extended high-frequency details. Even the enclosures contribute to great sound. Their attractive cabinets use non-resonant MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) and non-parallel curved side panels to create a rigid, acoustically inert structure that effectively reduces audible coloration.

    Something New Something Vintage

Written by: ReggieT from Portland,Oregon on March 4, 2016

I love these speakers and although they are bookshelf speakers they sound and preform much better than you will think before you fire these up.A different option than the good old sub-bummer(woofer) is a vintage set of Polk Monitor 7's.It gives the bass a nice bump and gives you the rich warm sound that some of the new gear lacks.Like many other reviews on many other websites for those of us not in the 1% Polk is a sweet and affordable option good for HT even better for music.

Pros: Typical Polk great value even better performance.

Cons: Can't turn them up as much as I like (nice neighbors).

I had a great pair of Kef 102.3 speakers which got blown during my teenage son's party (his friend thought it would be cool to turn amp volume all the way up). Wanted something of similar size (large bookshelf speaker) and found these Polks. Very pleased with the sound.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had previously purchased a brand new pair of these and loved them, so I wanted a matching pair. I found them in the outlet portion of the site and purchased them. I was shocked to find the speakers were previously mounted and had 5 screw holes in them. The speakers are like new I knew that would be the case. I only wish they would have stated more clearly the amount of flaw that was in the speaker. Its not very noticeable and I am keeping them. These speaks really sound great and look fantastic.

    Pros: Great Look and sound

Cons: If purchasing from the outlet the products perform like new but may not look it.

I have had these for a couple of weeks now and really like them. I would buy them again. These speakers sound as good as they look. They are solid and well put together and I expect they will last for many years. I have them paired up with a 100W receiver and get much more volume than I need. The bass is loud and clean. I am surprised at how good the bass is for a bookshelf speaker. Polk did a good job on these.

Pros: Excellent sound, efficient, look great.

Cons: None that I have found so far.

We purchased these to replace a pair of book shelf speakers in our kitchen to enjoy music while we cook and dine. We also purchased a power sub woofer because we were lacking bass in the kitchen. Well both products came quickly as they always do from Crutchfield, the sub woofer was to large to use so it was returned. The Polk speakers sound so decent that I'm glad the sub woofer didn't fit as I feel we don't need it. The bass response it pretty decent from these and the highs are crisp and clear, would I recommend or buy again, yes. I will be the first to admit its difficult to purchase speakers with out hearing them first, I took the chance as the reviews on these were positive. So far so good.

    Pros: Sound, look, cost.

    Cons: none yet to list.

    My TSX 220s

Written by: Willie Bryan (music fanatic) from Moss Point, Ms. 39563 on May 20, 2014

I am a 57 yr. old man. Music is a major part of my life. I've gone from one piece hi fi's to 5.1 and 7.2 surround systems. I listen to music, and home theater everyday . I have a 1000 watt home theater in a box system. It sounded goog not great. Because I LOVE music. I wanted to buy a better system, the plastic speakers are a shame. I wondered what it would sound like with good speaker. So I researched bookshelf speakers. I decided to get tsx220s for the front and tsx110s for the back. My order got messed up. I never got my 110s. So I just replaced the fronts with the 220s.OMG! It sounds like a whole new system. I find myself listening to things I haven't listened to in a while, just to hear the system with the Polks added. Before you by a new system TRY new speakers first. You can be has happy as iAM. The best part it, I haven't even got my 110s yet!

Pros: Sounds great, excellent quality, good price

    Cons: Not one for me!

    Surround Singers

Written by: TerryS from Portland, OR on March 23, 2014

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm using these solid performers as surround backups in a 5.0 theatre system with two 550t towers and a 250c center; no subwoofer (as of yet, heh-heh). Just connected the whole sha-bang with 150 feet of Monster Cable XP--50' to each surround and 10' to the upfront trio, including a bi-amp to the towers. The 220b's are corner-mounted to the walls above and behind me (to help load the bass) and ALL 5 speakers are set to "large" to maximize the bass performance of source material (don't I sound technical-ha!). Anyway, to sum up: these so-called "bookshelf" marvels hold their own with the center and towers to create a SEAMLESS theatre experience, including that concussive bass shockwave when ALL 5 speakers fire at once. They don't draw attention to themselves during normal surround effects, but join in the fray when called upon. I suspect they out-perform typical "surround" speakers in this respect, that is, realistic impact--with bass and musical detail. Impressed, yes!

Pros: Come through "in the clutch", when called upon to create solid realistic theatre bass, as well as musical detail in a broad frequency bandwidth. Perfect for "corner mounting" between walls. Look great--love the shape and finish--match the other Tsx front speakers.

    Cons: None.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed a set of replacement speakers for my stereo. I didn't want anything too big . These fit the bill. I play and listen to a lot of classical, jazz and alternative music. These reproduce the music very well. I would recommend these. You may want yo use these with a good subwoofer, but not a necessity.

Pros: Mids and highs come through really well. Well built.

Cons: Bass is a little muddled. Could be solved by putting on a stand or possibly by using a subwoffer.

For my marantz sr6005, I have floorstanding polk monitor 70's wired to my fronts, polk tsx250c wired up center, and some old polk 10" sub from 10yrs ago. I bought the pair of tsx220b to replace my surrounds, and sure glad I did. They really opened up the sound stage, the highs are crisp and bass is tight. Just make sure you have the room for these things, they're huge and look badass on speaker stands.

    Pros: sound great

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm sold on Polk Audio, I own four pairs. I purchased the TSx220B bookshelf speakers for my sister's living room after much debate about buying a wireless solution (she wanted something small and relatively invisible). These speakers perform like much larger floor-standing speakers. The ported design offers deep, rich base and the highs are sharp!

Pros: Deep, rich sound. These speakers project such a wide, balanced spectrum that you'd think you were listening to much larger floor-standing speakers. Great cabinetry contributes to both sound quality and aesthetics.

Very nice looking speakers, but we don't buy speakers because they're perty. Nice sound, very good spatial imaging. Very crisp highs, and decent lows for a bookshelf speaker. Would recommend them if you can't use tower speaker.

    Pros: Excellent highs, without distorting

Cons: Just good low end sound, not great

    Driver Technology

TSx Series Loudspeaker: Introducing the TSx Series of loudspeakers from Polk; stylish and quality-built for high performance. The high efficiency TSx Series loudspeaker features a unique curved enclosure wrapped in a wood-grain vinyl. The loudspeaker employs Dynamic Balance tuned drivers and tweeters for realistic mid-range, deep, well-blended bass, and incredible detail - for a classic Polk sound that is naturally open, spacious, and clear.

High Efficiency Design: The TSx Series loudspeaker can be driven by practically any electronics, even the most modestly-powered amplifier or receiver. Whether you're connecting them to the newest digital receiver, or to your vintage amp, the TSx Series loudspeaker can produce sound that's spacious and clear, enveloping and realistic.

Dynamic Balance Drivers: The TSx Series loudspeaker uses Polk's Dynamic Balance Driver Technology for great sound. Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least amount of resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion. Using just the right materials enables Polk to tune out performance-robbing resonances before they occur.

Klipple Optimized Motor: Klipple Optimized Motor employs a laser and sophisticated software for large scale analysis of the TSx Series loudspeaker's drivers in motion. Using this state-of-the-art laser and software process, Polk engineers were able to optimize the speaker's motor structure, voice coil alignment, and suspension to yield the best possible performance.

Silk/Polymer Dome Tweeter: The TSx220B bookshelf loudspeaker features a 1.0" silk/polymer Dynamic Balance dome tweeter with a powerful neodymium magnet structure that delivers clear and detailed highs for realistic reproduction of vocals and instruments, without fatigue.

Bi-Laminate Composite Woofer: The TSx220B bookshelf loudspeaker features a 6.5" bi-laminate composite Dynamic Balance driver which is light and stiff with exceptional damping. This Dynamic Balance bi-laminate composite cone woofer uses a butyl rubber surround, polyamide voice coil, massive motor structure, and high-temperature aramid fiber spider to create a driver of exceptionally high efficiency, clear bass, better linearity, lower distortion, and greater durability.

High Performance Crossover: The loudspeaker employs a high performance crossover system for optimum blending and time alignment of the overall speaker. Mylar bypass capacitors are used to reveal extended high frequency details.

TSx-Series Timbre-Matched: All Polk loudspeakers are timbre-matched within their series, designed with the same components throughout, to achieve seamless speaker-to-speaker blending effects in multi-channel systems.

Frequency Response: The TSx220B bookshelf loudspeaker has an overall frequency response of 42Hz-25kHz, while the -3dB frequency response is 50-24kHz.

    Enclosure Design

Curved MDF Cabinet: The TSx220B bookshelf loudspeaker utilizes a unique curved cabinet design which creates a stronger, more rigid and acoustically inert enclosure. The elegantly curved side panels, which create non-parallel surfaces, reduce unwanted internal standing waves for less audible coloration. Non-resonant all-MDF construction, with a 5/8"thick baffle, ensures cleaner, clearer, more lifelike sound quality.

Note: The TSx220B bookshelf loudspeaker is available in either a black or cherry finish.

Flared Port: The TSx Series loudspeaker features a critically-tuned, front-firing flared port. The flared port improves air flow and minimizes port noise ("chuffing"), while ensuring good low frequency extension with low distortion. This flared port design lets the TSx speaker reveal realistic, natural, full-bodied sound with rich bass.

Anti-Diffraction Grille: The computer modeled anti-diffraction grille minimizes grille interference, so it doesn't get in the way of your sound. This black cloth grille is detachable.

Gold-Plated 5-Way Binding Posts: The TSx220B bookshelf loudspeaker features gold-plated 5-way binding posts for excellent signal transfer. The 5-way binding posts will accept bare wire (up to 10AWG), pin-connectors, spade-connectors, and banana plugs (single or dual). The speaker terminals are color coded for easy identification between positive (red) and negative (black).

    Mounting Options

Placement: Create an equilateral triangle between the speaker and the listening position. If you notice video distortion or discoloration, immediately move the speaker away from the video source.

Rubber Feet: The bookshelf loudspeaker comes with self-adhesive rubber feet so it will sit safely and securely on your speaker stand or shelf. The rubber feet add approximately 0.625" to the height of the speaker.

Wall Mounting: The TSx220B bookshelf speaker does not feature any type of wall-mount bracket or hardware. The optional PinPoint heavy duty side-grip wall-mounting bracket (121AM40B, sold separately) can be used to wall mount the speaker.

HI Dave. I own two pair of the 220s. One pair is mounted as expected; upright w/ tweet on top. The other pair is mounted horizontally on shelving in a slightly smaller room. After reading many reviews for several different bookshelf speaker manufacturers, I bought the Polk 220s and the Onkyo TX-8020 to drive them. I am a serious amateur jazz trumpet player. Music and listening go hand-in-hand. I was so happy with the Polk 220s I bought a 2nd pair! Both rooms are stand alone systems with terrific sound! [ Robert  Feb 12, 2016 ]
Sam, I purchased these speakers for a stand alone stereo system, not a home theater, in an NYC apartment. Space was an issue. What I can tell you is that the sound is awesome and powerful from these small speakers. My receiver is the Onkyo TX-8050, also purchased from Crutchfield - Kevin [ KEVIN  Apr 04, 2014 ]
I use it as part of a home entertainment system and it meets my needs. It has all the volume I need for my den, which is about 18' by 20'. You might get slightly better clarity from standing speakers, but I doubt it. My one piece of advice would be to not go small with the sub woofer. That is the one piece of equipment that really gives the "movie theatre" feel in a home entertainment system. I upgraded from my first choice after talking to the representative from Crutchfield and am happy with the results. [ MICHAEL J  Jan 20, 2014 ]
Bookshelf speakers can be an excellent fit for a home theater system. They make phenomenal rear surrounds, but can also be used for front speakers as well. The Polk Audio TSx220 speakers are relatively big for "bookshelf" speakers. The cabinets are deep and heavy (well constructed), which enhances sound quality. These speakers have a ported design which also extends bass response. Overall, these speakers perform as well (or better) than most floor standing speakers. To get the best performance out of these speakers, I would elevate them on speaker stands (SANUS makes great speaker stands as well as AV furniture and mounts for flat panel TVs). The most important thing in building a home theater system is to match all of your speakers - don't mix different brands - and even within brand, be sure to get surrounds that are matched with your fronts and center speaker. Polk Audio has a terrific line of speakers at different price levels, so check out their center channel and sub-woofers too. If you use the Polk TSx220 speakers for both your front and surround speakers, you'll be enveloped in a very full, rich sound. If you have any questions about speaker matching, I'd recommend calling the Crutchfield support line to ask for a recommendation - I have found them to be quite helpful. [ Jeffrey  Jan 17, 2014 ]
Absolutely, but it depends on the size of the room, how many subwoofers you plan using, and how much power your receiver is pumping out. In my family room, it's a small room, maybe 16' x 13', with one sub, and it works great. In a larger space, you may want to add 2 subs for more bass. The center channel speaker will handle most of the dialogue, and Polk makes some excellent ones to choose from. I have the Polk TSx150c, and I love it! [ MICHAEL  Jan 17, 2014 ]
Some use them when they don't have the room for floor standing speakers, and some use them as surrounds with a home theater setup. I used mine as surrounds. For my needs, I think they are great in a home theater system, but other may disagree. [ Bryan  Jan 16, 2014 ]
I have 2 home theater set-ups in my home. I use a pair of bookshelf speakers in each set-up for the FRONT speakers. Quality bookshelf speakers work great in this application, unless you have a really large room which could stretch the sonic capability of a small speaker. I have both Polk RTi and TSx bookshelf speakers in my HT set-ups, and I am really pleased with their performance both for movies and for music listening. [ Kerry  Jan 16, 2014 ]
They can be used as part of a home theatre system. You will want to check with one of the Crutchfield advisors to see what the best combination would be for you particular situation. It may be that a good soundbar and subwoofer will do the trick. [ NICHOLAS  Jan 16, 2014 ]
