Designed and built for exceptional performance

Polk carefully builds the TSx-series speakers using advanced manufacturing techniques and high-quality materials — they put a lot into them so you get a lot out of them. Each one boasts Polk's exclusive Dynamic Balance® drivers — a bi-laminate design of fiber-infused polymers sandwiched together to form a strong yet highly efficient lightweight cone for natural, low-distortion sound. Polk puts these advanced drivers through extensive testing to find and eliminate resonance points, ensuring that everything you listen to sounds clean and accurate.

Polk also paid special attention to the TSx crossovers, using a high-performance design with premium parts like Mylar bypass capacitors to deliver smooth and extended high-frequency details. Even the enclosures contribute to great sound. Their attractive cabinets use non-resonant MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) and non-parallel curved side panels to create a rigid, acoustically inert structure that effectively reduces audible coloration.

Driver Technology

TSx Series Loudspeaker: Introducing the TSx Series of loudspeakers from Polk; stylish and quality-built for high performance. The high efficiency TSx Series loudspeaker features a unique curved enclosure wrapped in a wood-grain vinyl. The loudspeaker employs Dynamic Balance tuned drivers and tweeters for realistic mid-range, deep, well-blended bass, and incredible detail - for a classic Polk sound that is naturally open, spacious, and clear.

High Efficiency Design: The TSx Series loudspeaker can be driven by practically any electronics, even the most modestly-powered amplifier or receiver. Whether you're connecting them to the newest digital receiver, or to your vintage amp, the TSx Series loudspeaker can produce sound that's spacious and clear, enveloping and realistic.

Dynamic Balance Drivers: The TSx Series loudspeaker uses Polk's Dynamic Balance Driver Technology for great sound. Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least amount of resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion. Using just the right materials enables Polk to tune out performance-robbing resonances before they occur.

Klipple Optimized Motor: Klipple Optimized Motor employs a laser and sophisticated software for large scale analysis of the TSx Series loudspeaker's drivers in motion. Using this state-of-the-art laser and software process, Polk engineers were able to optimize the speaker's motor structure, voice coil alignment, and suspension to yield the best possible performance.

Silk/Polymer Dome Tweeter: The TSx550T tower loudspeaker features a 1.0" silk/polymer Dynamic Balance dome tweeter with a powerful neodymium magnet structure that delivers clear and detailed highs for realistic reproduction of vocals and instruments, without fatigue.

Bi-Laminate Composite Woofers: The TSx550T tower loudspeaker features two 5.25" bi-laminate composite Dynamic Balance midrange drivers for crisp, detailed midrange and two 8" bi-laminate composite Dynamic Balance woofers for smooth, natural deep bass extension. These Dynamic Balance bi-laminate composite cone woofers are lightweight and stiff with exceptional damping. They use butyl rubber surrounds, vented polyamide voice coils, massive motor structures, and high-temperature aramid fiber spiders to create a driver of exceptionally high efficiency, clear bass, better linearity, lower distortion, and greater durability.

High Performance Crossover: The loudspeaker employs a high performance crossover system for optimum blending and time alignment of the overall speaker. Mylar bypass capacitors are used to reveal extended high frequency details.

TSx-Series Timbre-Matched: All Polk loudspeakers are timbre-matched within their series, designed with the same components throughout, to achieve seamless speaker-to-speaker blending effects in multi-channel systems.

Frequency Response: The TSx550T tower loudspeaker has an overall frequency response of 26Hz-25kHz, while the -3dB frequency response is 36-24kHz.

Enclosure Design

Curved MDF Cabinet: The TSx550T tower loudspeaker utilizes a unique curved cabinet design which creates a stronger, more rigid and acoustically inert enclosure. The elegantly curved side panels, which create non-parallel surfaces, reduce unwanted internal standing waves for less audible coloration. Non-resonant all-MDF construction with front-to-back and side-to-side internal bracing, and a 3/4"thick baffle ensures cleaner, clearer, more lifelike sound quality.

Note: The TSx550T tower loudspeaker is available in either a black or cherry finish.

Flared Port: The TSx Series loudspeaker features a critically-tuned, front-firing 3" flared port. The flared port improves air flow and minimizes port noise ("chuffing"), while ensuring good low frequency extension with low distortion. This flared port design lets the TSx speaker reveal realistic, natural, full-bodied sound with rich bass.

Anti-Diffraction Grille: The computer modeled anti-diffraction grille minimizes grille interference, so it doesn't get in the way of your sound. This black cloth grille is detachable.

Connections

Dual 5-Way Binding Posts: The TSx550T tower loudspeaker has two sets of gold-plated 5-way binding posts connected by gold-plated jumpers. Using the dual 5-way binding posts, you can bi-amp or bi-wire the speakers. The 5-way binding posts will accept bare wire (up to 10AWG), pin-connectors, spade-connectors, and banana plugs (single or dual). The speaker terminals are color coded for easy identification between positive (red) and negative (black).

Mounting Options

Placement: Create an equilateral triangle between the speaker and the listening position. If you notice video distortion or discoloration, immediately move the speaker away from the video source.

Integrated Feet: The TSx550T tower speaker features four integrated conical non-slip feet to ensure stability for precise positioning.

Q
I have an Onkyo TX-8060, 80 watts per channel receiver. Will it be enough to drive these speakers?
mike  May 25, 2016
7 answers
A
If that's an older Onkyo, then yes for sure enough power. I have 20-25yr old Onkyo rated 80wpc & puts lots of power to these speakers, much more than the Onkyo txnr747 rated at 110wpc. Older Onkyo's have much underated power ratings. These Polk's sound great, not too bright, very warm & plenty of bass. Anyone saying not enough bass must have a poor receiver or lack of settings. Not too big not too small, just the right size.
terry  Aug 30, 2016
A
If you have a small room you should be able to obtain a reasonable volume level although higher listening volume will require you to push the receiver to 80-85%% of max. For a larger room or higher listening levels you will need more power.
james  Jun 11, 2016
A
That receiver should be enough to drive those speakers. These are some very clear and loud speakers, and for the price, that can't be beat.
eddie  May 26, 2016
A
I have a 80 watt receiver and it drives the speaker I have to say that they lack the lower bass you would have to add a sub to get deep bass hopes this helps
robert  May 25, 2016
A
Hello Mike- I am driving them with an Onkyo TX-NR838 that has 130 wpc. The pictures don't do these speakers justice. They are HUGE and can take a lot of power. Your receiver will most likely suffice, but you may want to think of upgrading, if possible. But I would take advantage and buy these speakers while they have this discount going. They really are great.
joe  May 25, 2016
A
More than enough power for them. You will find that 1/3 on your volume is plenty and they are really loud with lots of bass!
jeffrey  May 25, 2016
A
Mike, my tower TSX 550t's, coupled with Polk Rti A1's, have been powered by a Sony STR 6800SD, 80wpc continuous power, and a Yamaha RX 797, 100 wpc, and most recently, a Sansui AU 9500, 75-80wpc, continuous power, and the Polks sound fabulous on all of them. The sound is warm and integrated generally, although on the Sansui, it produces an enhanced sharpness and definition.
robert  May 25, 2016
Q
Would there be an advantage of having the TSx 550T over the TSx 440T when using a sub?
jeff  May 12, 2016

A
No....I have both and even tho the 550 have two 8's the sound is very similar. The sub will do the bottom end. Just my .02
gregory  May 12, 2016
A
Probably.....I have the 550T's in cherry, so I really can't comment on how they compare directly to the 440's. These speakers do provide enough bass to use without a sub, however with the 2 smaller tweeter cones that the 440T's do not have, I believe the 550T's would provide a better high tone production; on paper at least.
garrett  May 12, 2016
A
Hi, That's a hard question to answer. Especially since I've never heard the 440s. They are really different speakers though. The 440s have three 6 1/2s (1 for mids and 2 for bass). The 550s have two 5 1/4s dedicated to mids and two 8s dedicated to bass. I'm running a sub with my 550s - and have run the crossover a little lower (pushing a little more work to the 8s - and allowing the sub JUST to produce low bass). It would be harder to do that with the 440s. Plus I like having 2 drivers dedicated to mids (two smaller drivers will produce tighter sound than one larger one). I really think the 550s would give you more flexibility and midrange. I'd worry that the 440s would be limited due to the lack of drivers. And with this sale, the 550s are only $40 more each. You'll get a lot for your money with either choice though. To get better sound, you're going to need to get into the 600-700/ea lines. Hope that helps and good luck!
graham  May 12, 2016
A
I definitely recommend a sub with the TSx 550Ts. The speakers are very bright - the highs are good, the midrange is good and I recommend the towers especially for front speakers on a theater system. Polk quality is outstanding. Hope this helps.

Q
Which terminal is positive and which is negative for hook up to the receiver?
roger  Jan 23, 2016
5 answers
A
The red terminal is the positive And The black is the negative. With these speakers I recommend either monster cable or equivalent. Monster cable is clear covering , so you will have to look for the small plus and arrow pointing to the positive wire. You will be VERY HAPPY with this choice. Thanks,Mike
mike  Jan 27, 2016
A
Hi, They are just standard - red for positive and black for negative. These particular speakers have 2 sets of plugs on the back. Just pick one set and hook them up to your receiver. The extra set is only for "lowering the impedance" on the speakers. Not something most people do as it allows more power to the speakers, but it very hard on your receiver. Hope that helps. Thanks, Graham

Q
Will the Yamaha rx-v679bl have enough power to make it worth getting these speakers?
christopher  Nov 28, 2015

A
Absolutely. Yamaha offers high current amplification and the Polks are efficient speakers (91dB) so, you'll have plenty of power to fill even a large room with great performance. I hope that helps!

Q
I will be pairing the TSx 550T floor speakers with the CSi5 center channel. I just want to make sure that will be a good pairing. According to Polk's website, the CSi series is timbre matched with the RTi series. Is it okay to go with this configuration? The rears will be bookshelf RTi A6's.
robert  Nov 26, 2015

A
I found the center plays largest portion of sound in home theater setup! Playing stereo sources using surround mode processing drives the center more than the front pair. If you can fit the 250c "check the dimensions " you will not be dissapointed.
jeffrey  May 25, 2016
A
These speakers are not a voice match for your other models. The RTi A series are with the RTi A7 being similar in price. The RTi A9 being similar with driver sizes and layout as these TSx speakers.

Q
I recently purchased a Yamaha RX-A 3050 Aventage, will this be enough power to drive the Polk Audio TSx 550T Floor Standing Speakers ?
steven  Nov 15, 2015
5 answers
A
Yes. I have a Yamaha RX-A 1020, and it has enough power to drive these speakers. The 3050 will easily power these speakers. One important thing is to set up the speakers correctly for best sound. I have mine set to "large" with extra bass boost on.
stephen  Nov 20, 2015
A
Hi, Yes, it will. I have an older Denon that has about the same output as yours and it's more than enough to drive them. Nice receiver you bought there BTW!
graham  Nov 16, 2015
A
yes and you will have clear crisp sound and hear things in your music you didn't hear before
steven j  Nov 16, 2015
A
Yes, we just hook our up and it works great. There is also a feature called Bio-Amp which gives you the option to send extra power to the towers. You did need another set of wire to hook this feature up but the great technical support at Crutchfield can walk you through this if needed.

I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: This amplifier will offer plenty of power to confidently drive the Polk Audio TSx550T Floorstanding speakers. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.

Q
I recently replaced my older Bose acoustimass system with a Definitive Tech 1000/2000 system. I love this new system, but now being my receiver is a 7.1 Sony Str-DG1200 (older model) I'm thinking of a change. I'd like to move the 2 front Def Tech satellites to the rear location and keep the other 2 in the surround setup. Than my idea would be to replace the fronts with floor standing units. Being dialog and conversation sensitive I was looking at a nice set of 3 way floor speakers. Right now my choice would be the Polk Audio RTiA7, or PA TSX 550T. Anyone have any recommendations as to which if either would work for me? Would they all be compatible (the Def Tech and the Polks) especially considering the dialog and conversation concerns? Any other what I'll call 3 ways in this price range you might recommend? Would really appreciate any first hand knowledge or experience with anything similar to what I'm trying to do. Thanks for your time.

I just updated my system with new receiver Onkyo TX-NR646 and 2 Polk Audio TSX550t speakers. I'm using Polk Audio speakers as front sound and moved my Bose tower speakers to surround sound location. I kept the Bose front center speaker as the center. I'm very happy with the sound both music, tv shows and movies. It was well worth it. Crutchfields tech support said it would work and it did. Very happy with my setup.

Q
I have a Polk TSi cs10 as my center channel, with older Polk Monitor 50s for my left & right and a pair Monitor 30s for rear channels and a Polk PSW110 Subwoofer (an Onkyo TX-SR308 running the show). My main room is 14x13.5ft. Right now the sound is great, but you know... more is better... I sit roughly 6ft from the center channel. I'm considering moving the Monitor 50s into my office space (B channel) and upgrading the front, but worry that the Tsx550T will overwhelm my cs10; any thoughts?
matthew  Feb 16, 2015

A
I would say the most important thing is placement of the center channel. The Tsx550T tweeters are about ear level when you are sitting in an average chair, so I would try to keep the center matched and I would think it would sound fine.

Sounds like you have a nice setup Matthew. Mine is very similar. What's more, my system is in a room almost the same size as yours, so I think you have asked the right person! I'll try to help if I can. For starters, I can promise you that you will be very happy, if not completely surprised, by the upgrade to the 550's! I sure was! For the first few weeks I sat around just listening in amazement at the increased volume, depth, and spaciousness of the sound! It made the room come alive, and greatly enhanced my listening experience! I hope my description doesn't sound weird or exaggerated in some way. This is my very first attempt at describing what speakers sound like in my life! I could just say they rock, or kick-ass, or something like that, but I want you to understand, a little better, how I was moved by the huge improvement! My point is, even if they do overwhelm your CS10 center channel, (and I don't think they will), you'll still be thrilled by the change! Btw, I originally has TSi300s in front. Throughout both sets of front channel speakers, I have had the CS20 in the center, and haven't had a problem. It is almost the same as yours, so I really don't think you will either! I wish I knew more about you receiver, other than Onkyo is a very nice one, because I know that with mine, I can do a few different things to tweak the sound and put more emphasis on the center. I don't know if you can do anything like that, but I really don't think it would matter much! I'd just go for it if I were you, and bring home those TSx550s! I did, and I loved it! I'm betting you will too! Good luck Matthew!
robert  Feb 17, 2015
A
I do not feel qualified to attempt to answer your question as it relates to combining with what you currently have. What I can tell you is that I recently bought four Polk speakers to replace old Pioneer ones that I had for years and I am very happy with their quality.
william  Feb 17, 2015
A
In my opinion, if it over powers them, you can always dial them back just a touch. I have these with a TSx 250c and it sounds great. I play with the levels a little bit to get a good balance. I was more than satisfied with this purchase and you won't regret it either. The only con to these floor standing speakers is lack of bass. That's where the sub comes into play. Good luck and I hope I was helpful.

I am driving mine with a marantz receiver/amp and when i got these speakers they were painfully harsh, but clear. After almost a year they have finally loosened up to the point where i like them, but not love them. Hopefully time will continue to work its magic and they will get softer, more balanced and easier on the ear. They prob won't overpower anything unless your environment is hardscape.

Q
What gauge of speaker wire should I use with my TSx550T speakers? Should I have any speaker termination at the end? Please advise.
brad t  Dec 09, 2013
3 answers
A
Good question, Brad. I would say that 16 gauge is adequate for runs of 15 feet or less. I have nothing against the larger gauges of wire and would recommend it on longer runs. If you're a serious aficionado, you can go for the big name brands of special speaker wire but it's according to your taste and pocket book. Also, here are a few hints for optimum performance. Keep the polarity of the wires the same from amp to speaker. That means always connect red terminal to red terminal and black to black. This polarity hookup assures that your speakers are in phase and give better performance, especially in the lower frequencies. Also, if your speakers and amp have the five-way binding posts, please think about using banana plugs. They are a bit on the expensive side but there are good reasons for using them. One is that you don't have to worry about a stray strand of wire shorting out your amp (and it can happen with a SINGLE STRAND!) A short between the speaker terminals on the amp means that your amp just became a very expensive paper weight. A second reason for using banana plugs is that they are very easy and quick to connect and disconnect. If you get the gold-plated plugs, they also look very cool.
edward  Dec 12, 2013
A
I just used 16 gauge wire, stripped and twisted on the ends that was there from my old speakers. Its been working fine for me.
jerome  Dec 11, 2013
A
Depending on your amp, I would use the fattest, heaviest, gauge speaker wire you can get. 14 gauge is the most commercially available, but if you can score some 12, or even 10, that would be better. As far as a termination, your call, I don't, but you can.
