Rock the house

Are you ready to take your movies and music to a higher level? Polk Audio's TSx550T will take you there. This powerful floor-standing speaker delivers sparkling-clear highs, dynamic mids, and deep, solid bass ready to fill larger home entertainment spaces. Each tower boasts two 8" woofers for authoritative bottom end, two 5-1/4" mid/woofers for clear, lifelike midrange, and a 1" silk/polymer dome tweeter with smooth, ear-pleasing highs. Pick up a pair of these towers for your main left and right home theater speakers, or use them on their own for a rockin' stereo music setup.

Designed and built for exceptional performance

Polk carefully builds the TSx-series speakers using advanced manufacturing techniques and high-quality materials — they put a lot into them so you get a lot out of them. Each one boasts Polk's exclusive Dynamic Balance® drivers — a bi-laminate design of fiber-infused polymers sandwiched together to form a strong yet highly efficient lightweight cone for natural, low-distortion sound. Polk puts these advanced drivers through extensive testing to find and eliminate resonance points, ensuring that everything you listen to sounds clean and accurate.

Polk also paid special attention to the TSx crossovers, using a high-performance design with premium parts like Mylar bypass capacitors to deliver smooth and extended high-frequency details. Even the enclosures contribute to great sound. Their attractive cabinets use non-resonant MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) and non-parallel curved side panels to create a rigid, acoustically inert structure that effectively reduces audible coloration.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for a speaker that would give my music more depth, or a fuller sound, than I was getting from my surround sound satellite speakers (TL250) with a sub. I bought the TSx550s based on ratings on Crutchfield and elsewhere and hoped that they wouldn't disappoint me. With 2-5.25" mids, and 2-8" woofers, it has to have a solid mid and low range, right? At first, I was not impressed. It took more tweaking with the receiver set up than I expected, but now they sound great! Low volume or high volume, they sound great, especially with HD radio! I have been listening to music every night since I got them. They provide a full range of sound all by themselves. I've listened to them using 2 channel stereo, but adding the surround system makes it sound even better!

Pros: Clear sound. Great lower mid range (mid bass) for a fuller sound to music. Impressive size, it will definitely draw attention. If you like your music loud and clear, these speakers will not disappoint you.

Cons: A small thing; the finish is not high end, compared to the RTi-Ax finish. But I bought my speakers by biggest punch for the buck, not looks.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I don't know why so many reviews say the bass response isn't all that great. We just received our Polks yesterday and they sound great! First polk's we bought and we LOVE them! Thank you Crutchfield for all your help and the professional team.

Pros: Bass response is awesome, I'm running them off the Marantz 7007. Highs and mids are amazing.

Cons: None here!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers are very clear and natural sounding, just the way I prefer to hear music. Nothing is exaggerated, and no listening fatigue no matter what kind of music is being heard. Matches wonderfully with my Yamaha S500, Teac TN 300 turntable, and Cambridge Azur 351C CD player. Use good video cables and speaker wire to do justice to these speakers.

Pros: Very clear and natural sounding. Very balanced overall sound that captures all the subtle musical nuances (for example, acoustic guitars in the background) that weave in with the bolder, more up front sounds.

Cons: None for me!

Love these floor speakers!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted to replace my old Technics T-400. I wanted a speaker that was neutral sounding, warm, and not too bright or harsh. With the help of a Crutchfield advisor, I decided between the Rti-A7 and the TSx-550T. I ended up with the TSx, and I couldn't be happier. Some had criticized the A7s for being a bit bright/harsh, which is something I am extremely sensitive to. The TSx sounded natural and warm right out of the box. This didn't include the subwoofer and new Yamaha receiver, so when I get them I expect them to sound even better. The speakers sound excellent, with a very round, even sound. There is no "overlap" between the highs, mids, and lows. The sound is extremely natural and there is no "ear fatigue", except for the extreme clarity which may reveal flaws in your music you never heard before!

The low end is decent, although I cannot wait to hear it with the new receiver and a subwoofer.

Good job, Crutchfield! I'm very happy with this purchase.

Pros: Extremely warm, even, natural sound. High-quality finish, and very little harshness, especially in the highs/mids. Easy to adjust the sound, extremely musical sounding, and very even horizontal through.

Cons: The low-end can is a little underwhelming in comparison to the rest of the sound; this is a nit-pick, however. Definitely the best speakers you can get for the money.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've been wanting some good tower speakers that have a good reputation. Polk seems to be at the top with great reviews. The quality of the speakers are top notch. They are truly loud speakers. With a nice amplifier you can fill any room with incredible sound. I bought the open box and scratch and dent for a much lower price. Both looked brand new. I didn't find any flaw on the scratch and dent speaker. I'm very happy with these speakers and know they will last me forever. Thanks Crutchfield!

Pros: Great Sound that will knock your socks off!

Cons: A bit lacking on the low end but too much bass doesn't sound good plus can be annoying to surrounding neighbors. Not complaining.

Polk Audio TSx550T Overall Nice Purchase

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Picked up a pair of Polk Audio TSx550T after reading reviews and comparing prices. Cherry finish is very nice. Speaker performance is great except for the low end. I went with the 550s hoping that the low end would be covered by having 2 dedicated 8" woofers, but there is definitely something missing there. This was mentioned in previous reviews, but I went ahead with the purchase hoping for the best. This problem can be fixed easily enough with the addition of a sub, but I had reservations about having to spend more to do this. Two weeks after making this purchase I decided that I was going to return them and go with the 440s paired with a sub. Then Crutchfield saved the day by discounting the 550s. I called customer service regarding the discount expecting I would have to fight to get the price match. Nope!!! Poured myself a cup of coffee, grabbed the phone and before I could get 2 sips in I already had an email receipt for a credit. Awesome!!! Now I am getting 550s with a sub for the original price of the 550s. Thank you Crutchfield!

PS: Polk Audio...you owe Crutchfield!

Pros: Cherry finish matches well with other furniture in the living room. Happy wife...happy life!

Cons: Low end is lacking. I was expecting more for the price.

The 550s with a sub makes a guitar, piano or cello sound as if I were listening to the real instrument. Paloma San Basilio sounds perfect too.

wow these sound great, haven't purchased speakers in about 20 years but I am glad I picked these.

Pros: great looks and great sound.

Great speakers.....PERIOD!

Written By BigD007, Monterey Ca. on Wednesday, January 22, 2014

I was looking for a speaker brand to use in a 5.1 setup(70% music,30% movies),my budget for the system was 2,000. I wanted a speaker that produced clear, accurate mid's and highs, and a tight, but well rounded bottom end. I listen to a little bit of everything, and also like to throw a few parties,so i wanted a speaker that was very versatile. After doing a lot of research online, looking at specs, reading reviews for the surrounds and then doing some listening tests,i decided on the Polk TSX 550's as the choice for my main speakers. Even stacked up against more expensive DefTech's,Martin Logans, Bowers & Wilkins, and even the Polk Audio RTi A7's, the TSX 550's were more than up to the challenge, they just did everything well. Aesthetically they are an impressive looking, well built speaker, with 5 drivers, including 2- 8" woofers, each measuring almost 4 ft,and weighing 59 pds! I bought them home thinking i would return them after a few weeks if they didn't sound as good in my home. Well 2 months later and here i am writing this review. They are even better sounding now after being broken in and i couldn't be happier. I have paired them with the TSX 150c center channel, PSW110 sub,the above mentioned TSX 220 B's, and a Yamaha TSR 7650, all for under 2,000. If you want a speaker that sounds good for both music and movies.

Pros: Great for music AND movies

Cons: Nothing

A very nicely finished piece of furniture but sound quality is so-so. Tried them with two different amps and mids were not clear enough for my tastes. Sad because I like the way they look.

Pros: Nice quality finish

Cons: Sound was below expectations for speakers in this price range

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This should be fun! I've only had these speakers at home now for about a month. They sound soooo good to me! I'm no expert by any means, but these speakers flat out sound good! They are not my first Polk Audio Speakers however, so I can make a comparison, of sorts. In 1991, I purchased a pair of Polk Audio, floor standing, tower speakers! I'm having some difficulty remembering the exact model, but as best I do remember, they were RTA-15TL speakers. They were probably the best I have ever owned in my life, TSx-550T included! These are quite comparable however, and even favorably so in some aspects! My old Polk towers were more "boomy", and better on their own without a subwoofer! The new towers are slightly lacking in the low end, which is a miner problem easily dealt with by adding my Polk subwoofer, model PSW-125. With the low frequency taken care of, the TSx-550T speakers are quite exceptional! The detail and super clean clarity are well worth just sitting in front of them, listening in awe! I am kind of a home stereo buff, and have really had many different makes and models of front stereo loud speakers, and with the nearly, but not completely, insignificant lacking at the very low end, it is more than fair to describe these speakers as truly amazing! Take my word for it, buy these speakers, throw in a subwoofer, and let them blow you away! Btw, the are as pleasing to look at, as they are to listen to! You really can't go wrong with these guys!

Pros: Sound REAL good, surprisingly so for the price! Very pleasing visually!

Cons: Good low frequency, but just a little lacking. A problem easily remedied by adding a subwoofer!

The Twin Towers

Written By TerryS, Portland, OR on Tuesday, November 05, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my first floorstanding purchase--it replaces a 27 year-old M&K Sub/Satellite system that simply wore out. My only other loudspeakers were a couple of JBL's I bought in the late 70's while at college and sold to a classmate. I also bought the 220B's and 230C in the TSx line to complete a 5.0 theatre system I've yet to hook up. I'll review those as well at a later date. The 550T's are hooked up as a stereo pair with Original (27 year-old) Monster Cable to my Denon AVR1911 running at 90 watts/7 channels. I started out listening to FM radio, then CD'S, and finally DVD's. The receiver allows me to listen to source material in either a "direct" or sonically "enhanced" mode. The enhanced mode compensates for imperfect room accoustics with or without a "dynamic" volume level adjustment, i.e., elevated bass. I prefer to listen to radio in "direct" mode, as I can walk about the house without being anchored to a "sweet spot". Music and movies sound fuller in "stereo" or Audessey enhanced mode. Technicalities aside, I am impressed both sonically and aesthetically with what I affectionately call "the twin towers". Yes, they dominate my midsize 12'x18' living room, but in a good inspirational way--they are visually stunning to look at with their stately stature and elegant curves, and they will both serenade you sweetly with a song or rattle you out of your seat with an action movie. I've ordered my new Monster Cable (XP) and can hardely wait to create a monster system!

Pros: Breathtaking aesthetics and sound for a reasonable price--realistic, natural and open tones that are pleasing to the senses. A stunningly beautiful piece of furniture art. Can stand on their own without a subwoofer (depending on room size/acoustics). Very efficient power handling ( a -8db setting on the dial will shake the house).

Cons: They WILL draw attention away from other inferior/competing room decor--"look at me" they shout! A "take no prisoners" attitude of performance that may intimidate the faint of heart. They are bigger in real life.

Great Sound

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had the Polk TSX550T for about a month now and they sound really good to me. Very happy with them. The only difference that I can say that changed with break in is some male voices that sounded, like what I think the reviewers call bloated or tubby, cleared up after about a week. Maybe it was because the voices overlapped the 5 1/25" midrange and 8" woofers and they started to work together better after several days of operation.

I ran them full range with the center, surrounds and sub turned off to give them the full frequency range of the source material for about two weeks for break in. I am now running them full range with with center and surrounds crossover set to 80hz and the sub set to about 50hz to get the lower hz. I know that is not the recommended way but I like it that way. I run them full range because I like the way the bass sounds and my Marantz receiver does not seem to mind the load. I have them biamped as I did the Inifinities.

I replaced some 16 year old Infinity Cappa 7 series II with the Polks. The Infinity's cost more than the TSX550T's but the Polk's sound better to me especially the base and mid range. The Infinity's have 10" woofers and sound a little boomy when run full range. I had them set to small and crossed at 60hz. I have never heard any really expensive high end speakers to compare them to but I am very happy with these.

I ordered a TSX150C center that will be delivered tomorrow. I hope it is a good good match for the towers.

Pros: Great Sound

Cons: None so far

Excellent sound

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sounds great. Good bass response, and great full range sound.

Pros: Worth the money. Looks great, sounds great, makes my TV seem bigger then it is.

Cons: Not a big fan of the 4 post system. Don't really like having to split 1 post from receiver into 2 separate posts of the speaker.

Polk Audio TSx550T

Written By AG Dave, Arroyo Grande, California on Tuesday, June 25, 2013

I've had my TSx 550T tower speakers for two weeks now, and although I am still "breaking them in", I'm listening to them every chance I get. I've never been happier with an audio purchase. The speakers are brilliant and satisfy my craving for crisp and crystal-clear highs and lows that make a recorded cello sound like I'm playing it. I haven't heard a Bach organ recording yet - waiting a little longer for the "break in". I'm powering it with a Rotel RA 985BX, and don't think I need anything else. I'd recommend these speakers, but I haven't heard too many other high or higher-end tower speakers. I can't imagine anything better for the price. My only suggestion to Crutchfield, would be to communicate better. The "advisors" were not helpful, nor timely. I had to go directly to Polk to have questions answered.

Driver Technology

TSx Series Loudspeaker: Introducing the TSx Series of loudspeakers from Polk; stylish and quality-built for high performance. The high efficiency TSx Series loudspeaker features a unique curved enclosure wrapped in a wood-grain vinyl. The loudspeaker employs Dynamic Balance tuned drivers and tweeters for realistic mid-range, deep, well-blended bass, and incredible detail - for a classic Polk sound that is naturally open, spacious, and clear.

High Efficiency Design: The TSx Series loudspeaker can be driven by practically any electronics, even the most modestly-powered amplifier or receiver. Whether you're connecting them to the newest digital receiver, or to your vintage amp, the TSx Series loudspeaker can produce sound that's spacious and clear, enveloping and realistic.

Dynamic Balance Drivers: The TSx Series loudspeaker uses Polk's Dynamic Balance Driver Technology for great sound. Dynamic Balance is a proprietary Polk Audio technology using laser imaging to determine what combination of speaker materials create the least amount of resonance. Eliminating resonance in speakers results in a wide, smooth response and low distortion. Using just the right materials enables Polk to tune out performance-robbing resonances before they occur.

Klipple Optimized Motor: Klipple Optimized Motor employs a laser and sophisticated software for large scale analysis of the TSx Series loudspeaker's drivers in motion. Using this state-of-the-art laser and software process, Polk engineers were able to optimize the speaker's motor structure, voice coil alignment, and suspension to yield the best possible performance.

Silk/Polymer Dome Tweeter: The TSx550T tower loudspeaker features a 1.0" silk/polymer Dynamic Balance dome tweeter with a powerful neodymium magnet structure that delivers clear and detailed highs for realistic reproduction of vocals and instruments, without fatigue.

Bi-Laminate Composite Woofers: The TSx550T tower loudspeaker features two 5.25" bi-laminate composite Dynamic Balance midrange drivers for crisp, detailed midrange and two 8" bi-laminate composite Dynamic Balance woofers for smooth, natural deep bass extension. These Dynamic Balance bi-laminate composite cone woofers are lightweight and stiff with exceptional damping. They use butyl rubber surrounds, vented polyamide voice coils, massive motor structures, and high-temperature aramid fiber spiders to create a driver of exceptionally high efficiency, clear bass, better linearity, lower distortion, and greater durability.

High Performance Crossover: The loudspeaker employs a high performance crossover system for optimum blending and time alignment of the overall speaker. Mylar bypass capacitors are used to reveal extended high frequency details.

TSx-Series Timbre-Matched: All Polk loudspeakers are timbre-matched within their series, designed with the same components throughout, to achieve seamless speaker-to-speaker blending effects in multi-channel systems.

Frequency Response: The TSx550T tower loudspeaker has an overall frequency response of 26Hz-25kHz, while the -3dB frequency response is 36-24kHz.

Enclosure Design

Curved MDF Cabinet: The TSx550T tower loudspeaker utilizes a unique curved cabinet design which creates a stronger, more rigid and acoustically inert enclosure. The elegantly curved side panels, which create non-parallel surfaces, reduce unwanted internal standing waves for less audible coloration. Non-resonant all-MDF construction with front-to-back and side-to-side internal bracing, and a 3/4"thick baffle ensures cleaner, clearer, more lifelike sound quality.

Note: The TSx550T tower loudspeaker is available in either a black or cherry finish.

Flared Port: The TSx Series loudspeaker features a critically-tuned, front-firing 3" flared port. The flared port improves air flow and minimizes port noise ("chuffing"), while ensuring good low frequency extension with low distortion. This flared port design lets the TSx speaker reveal realistic, natural, full-bodied sound with rich bass.

Anti-Diffraction Grille: The computer modeled anti-diffraction grille minimizes grille interference, so it doesn't get in the way of your sound. This black cloth grille is detachable.

Dual 5-Way Binding Posts: The TSx550T tower loudspeaker has two sets of gold-plated 5-way binding posts connected by gold-plated jumpers. Using the dual 5-way binding posts, you can bi-amp or bi-wire the speakers. The 5-way binding posts will accept bare wire (up to 10AWG), pin-connectors, spade-connectors, and banana plugs (single or dual). The speaker terminals are color coded for easy identification between positive (red) and negative (black).

Mounting Options

Placement: Create an equilateral triangle between the speaker and the listening position. If you notice video distortion or discoloration, immediately move the speaker away from the video source.

Integrated Feet: The TSx550T tower speaker features four integrated conical non-slip feet to ensure stability for precise positioning.
