Our take on the Infinity Primus 150

Looking for a bookshelf speaker that can do your music and movies justice? The Primus 150, sold individually, uses Infinity's Metal Matrix Diaphragm (M.M.D.™) driver material. Derived from the C.M.M.D. material used in Infinity's flagship Prelude™ speakers, M.M.D. features a stiff aluminum core for crisp, dynamic sound.

The Primus 150's compact design makes for easy, unobtrusive placement, but the 3/4" tweeter and 5-1/4" woofer pack enough sonic punch for satisfying performance. A bookshelf speaker at this price isn't supposed to produce such full-bodied sound. For rich, high-impact stereo sound, team up a pair of 150s with an Infinity powered subwoofer.

Use the Primus 150s as the front and surround speakers in a small-room home theater setup, or team them up with Primus 250 or 360 towers for larger rooms. They're available individually, so you can add as many speakers as you need — even if you're building a state-of-the-art 6.1- or 7.1-channel system. All Primus speakers are voice-matched for a seamless home theater experience. Recommended center: Primus C25.

Features

Metal Matrix Diaphragm (M.M.D.): All of the speakers in the Primus Series feature Infinity's proprietary Metal Matrix Diaphragm (M.M.D.) drivers. Derived from the C.M.M.D. material used in Infinity's flagship Prelude drivers, M.M.D. features a stiff aluminum core, anodized on both sides for increased strength and rigidity. M.M.D. transducers deliver crystal-clear, distortion-free sound from dynamic digital sources, even at high listening levels.

Woofers: The 5-1/4" M.M.D. cone woofer conducts sound faster than the paper, polypropylene and Kevlar cones found in many similarly-priced speakers, pushing unwanted resonances beyond the operating range of the transducer. For a smoother response and improved durability, the woofer uses a rubber surround.

Tweeters: The speaker utilizes a 3/4" M.M.D. dome tweeter and waveguide to deliver a wider, more even, high-frequency response.

Bass Reflex: There is a single port tube opening on the front of each speaker for increased and extended bass response.

5-Way Binding Posts: The gold-plated 5-way binding posts will accept pin connectors, spade connectors, banana plugs, dual banana plugs and bare wire. Note: Plastic inserts must first be removed from the speaker terminals before connecting banana plugs or dual banana plugs.

Wall Mounting: The Primus 150 speakers are designed to mount directly to a wall via the two keyholes on the back. Two rubber "bumpers" at the bottom of the back panel provide a non-scratch surface for walls as well as absorb vibrations from the speaker. Note: The speaker weighs 13-1/2 pounds, therefore proper mounting of the speaker using weight-appropriate hardware mounted to wall studs is required.

Fine Value

Written By Richard, Austin, TX on Friday, December 15, 2006

I'm using these as stereo speakers in my wife's home office. They are tucked in two corners of the room, set on the floor. They are one of four pairs of speakers set up in our house, all driven by a central receiver connected to a speaker switching unit with individual volume controls. These speakers put out plenty of sound for our needs, and they are small enough to to be inconspicuous, which my wife likes.

Seriously... why not?

Written By Jason, Watertown, MA on Monday, June 26, 2006

I bought a pair of the 150s and a Primus C25 to finish out my home theater (Denon 2803, Primus 250 towers and a powered sub). I'm new to home theater, but I'm impressed so far. They fit right into the system and sound great.

The ONLY negative is that they are freakin' huge and pretty hefty for satellites. However, they have built-in brackets which make them easy to mount to the wall.

Bottom line... these are sweet speakers and receiving free shipping is just icing on the cake.

Infinity Primus 150

Written By Glenn, Daytona Beach, FL on Monday, May 01, 2006

Great buy. These aren't lightweight speakers, in actual weight or performance. They have excellent clarity and balance. I'm currently using them as surrounds with Primus 160's as my fronts, a C25 center channel and a 100 watt subwoofer. I've heard speakers at twice the price and half the quality.

Infinity Primus 150

Written By David, Pinedale, WY on Wednesday, April 26, 2006

I have 4 Primus 150s teamed with a PS 10 sub and C25 center speaker, powered by a Denon 2807 in our home theater. I must admit that after reading the "glowing reviews" I was slightly disappointed in these speakers initially. Mostly because they don't sound quite as good as the ~30 yr old Pioneer HPM 100's they replaced. Not that they are seriously lacking. These just don't have the detail and clarity of my old speakers. However, the huge old HPM's just weren't suited for wall mounting in our house. These speakers are MUCH better than two previous wall mountable speakers I have tried (Advent and Atlantic Technology). After setting them up with the Denon's EQ system the speakers all blend very well, giving a smooth, natural sound in movies. I would recommend these speakers in a home theater or moderate stereo system where this size speaker is required, especially in this price range.

Great little speaker, especially for the money

Written By griffee, Salina, Ks on Friday, April 07, 2006

I initially was looking to purchase Klipsch bookshelf speakers to go with a Klipsch subwoofer that I already have, but after reading the review in Stereophile, I decided to give these a try.

After setting the speakers approximately 6 inches from the wall on stands, and adjusting the crossover on the sub, these things came to life. They are incredibly natural sounding, and I heard details with these speakers that somehow I missed in my other system with significantly more expensive speakers. I was expecting a total lack of bass, but even with the sub off, they are enjoyable, although they won't shake the floor like a larger speaker would. The upper bass is impressive, as promised.

They are plenty loud for my 18" x 25' room, although at a certain point, they just refuse to get louder. They never sound compressed or distorted, irregardless of what volume they are played at.

I totally enjoy these speakers, I don't see how there is a better bargain out there. Got great service from Crutchfield, as always.

Infinity 150's mixed with other speakers

Written By Duane, Minot, ND on Saturday, January 28, 2006

I purchased these speakers because of a special with Crutchfield. I am using as rear speakers with my surround sound. They are matched with Bose 301's in the front. Some say "do not mix speaker brands" but these 150's complement the front Bose exceptionally well. These 150's were thrown-in for buying a reciever from Crutchfield and I am not disappointed. In fact, considering my sound system budget I am very happy! Saved me money too! Crutchfield is a 1st class dealer!

Great Speakers

Written By scoonie_oenn, MN on Sunday, January 08, 2006

These speakers are wonderful. Small, but not tiny, and have a very full sound. I hooked them up to my existing receiver, ONKYO, and WOW. I played music and movies and couldn't believe it. I would recommend these speakers to anyone looking for bookself speakers that wants to get a TON of bang for their buck.

Excellent Speaker

Written By DrmWeaver2003, Port Arthur,Texas on Wednesday, December 07, 2005

I received these speakers as part of a package & had previously owned Infinity bookshelf line of speakers. As soon as I received these I openned the boxes to these babies and hooked them up and I was Totally Impressed with the Clarity & Sound they produced. I have the Infinity Primus 360's for the Rear speakers and a pair of JBL's North Ridge Series in the front on one side and the Infinity Primus 150's on the other in the front. I have this all hooked up to a Sony STR-DE545 Digital Cinema Receiver & a Sony CDP-CE235/5-disc player. The sound is Incredible. Almost sounds like you're in a Concert Hall listenning Live. Infinity has never let me down. Great Speakers no matter what the cost would be. Thanks so much Crutchfield.

Big surprises come in small packages

Written By Scott, Vienna, VA on Tuesday, November 29, 2005

I had no expectations for these speakers since they were part of a package and ridiculously inexpensive. I was in for a huge surprise. The Primus 150's are extraordinarily musical speakers. They lack the colorations (mainly brightness) that I've come to expect from small speakers. Manufacturers have tended to make small speakers sound bright to appeal to the listener at first, but that appeal wears out fast. The 150's sounded fine on all types of music. They have great definition and present a large soundstage that belies their small size. The only drawback is that they would benefit from the addition of a subwoofer. At $160/pair, these speakers are a steal.

Wonderful value!

Written By Will Deere, Charlotte, NC on Sunday, July 31, 2005

I had been researching bookshelf speakers for weeks before I found this incredible deal here on Crutchfield. I knew from other reviews across the internet that the Primus 150 is an excellent speaker for the price.

I am a new customer with Crutchfield, but WOW have I been impressed with them. The shipping price is very reasonable, quick (I live in just the next state), and the speakers were packaged very well.

I guess I should mention why I bought bookshelf speakers in the first place. I needed a pair of speakers to use in my dorm room at college and for general stero use at home. I don't have a lot of money, so I was looking all around for a good deal. This was it.

After I got the speakers, I checked them out. I found no visble scratches or dents; wonderful. I tested them out, they worked fine! To be honest, I am amazed by the sound that these babies put out. If you are in need of an affordable bookshelf speaker, definitely check these out!
