About the Infinity Primus P163

Kristen Schaub

A dual purpose workhorse for music and home theater

Infinity Primus P163 bookshelf speaker

The Primus P163 delivers rich, full sound without taking up too much space.

With Infinity's Primus P163, you get the real deal — rich, detailed sound and a price tag that won't leave your wallet empty. It's all thanks to a combination of Metal Matrix Diaphragm® driver technology and a low-resonance enclosure. You'll hear sparkling high frequencies and detailed midrange from any type of music, at any volume level. And for a compact bookshelf speaker, the bass might just surprise you. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the lifelike vocals and robust instrumentals that this speaker has to offer.

High quality materials for long term performance

The Primus P163 features Infinity's exclusive Metal Matrix Diaphragm ("MMD" for short) driver technology in both the 3/4" tweeter and 6-1/2" woofer. These MMD drivers consist of a stiff aluminum core, anodized on both sides for increased strength and rigidity. The result is extremely fast, extremely accurate response, so you'll hear distinctly cleaner, more realistic sound, even at higher volume levels.

Build a complete Primus® system

The Infinity Primus P163 will fill just about any room with dramatic and well-defined sound. Use a pair to create a high-quality stereo system, or add it to Infinity's P363 floor-standing speaker and PC351 center channel speaker to create a stunning Primus home theater system. And don't forget to add the perfectly matched PS38 powered subwoofer to get deep, accurate bass in the mix.

Driver Technology

Metal Matrix Diaphragm (M.M.D.): Derived from the C.M.M.D. material used in Infinity's flagship Cascade series, M.M.D. features a stiff aluminum core, anodized on both sides for increased strength and rigidity. M.M.D. transducers conduct sound faster than paper, polypropylene, and Kevlar, pushing unwanted resonances beyond the operating range of the transducer. M.M.D. drivers deliver crystal-clear, distortion-free sound from dynamic digital sources, even at high listening levels.

6-1/2" Woofer: The 6-1/2" M.M.D. cone woofer offers extremely accurate midrange response for cleaner, more realistic sound. For a smoother response and improved durability, the woofer uses rubber surrounds.

3/4" Tweeter: The speaker has a 3/4" M.M.D. dome tweeter that offers superior stiffness and damping compared to traditional metal domes.

Acoustical Waveguide: The P163's tweeter utilizes an acoustical waveguide to deliver, more even high frequency response, no matter what part of the room you're in.

Precision Crossover Network: The speaker features a 2-way crossover system with crossover frequency at 3000Hz. The crossover has a 24dB/octave slope.

Voice-Matched: The P163 is voice-matched to all the speakers in the Primus line, so a complete matching system can be built.

Magnetically Shielded: The Infinity Primus bookshelf loudspeaker is magnetically shielded for safe placement adjacent to your television.

Enclosure Design

Wood Grain Vinyl Cabinet: The Infinity P163 features a black wood grain vinyl cabinet that matches almost any decor.

Bass Reflex Design: The Infinity Primus bookshelf loudspeaker utilizes a bass reflex enclosure with a front-firing port for greater efficiency and bigger bass response.

Low Resonance Enclosure: The P163 employs a extremely low resonance enclosure, so you hear the music exactly as it was recorded.

Grille: The speaker comes with a removable black cloth grille with a rigid plastic frame.

Connections

5-Way Binding Posts: The 5-way binding posts will accept bare wire, pin connectors, spade connectors, banana plugs, and dual banana plugs.

Color-Coded: The speaker's binding posts are color-coded (red/black) for easy identification between positive and negative.

Mounting Options

Rubber Feet: The speakers come with 4 rubber self-adhesive feet for each speaker to help secure them in place to prevent slippage and vibration.

Wall Mounting: The optional PinPoint heavy duty side-grip wall-mounting bracket (121AM40B, sold separately) can be used to wall mount the speakers.

This is not an amplified speaker. So, to answer your question: No, there is no volume control. You'll have to pair two of this ones with an amplifier or (an amplified) receiver.

mark c  Apr 26, 2015

Q
Any suggestion/recommendsations for wall mounting these speakers? Type of mount?
laurie  Jan 08, 2015

A
Always go with speaker stands. You would be surprised at how inexpensive they are at Crutchfield and the selection.
keith  Jan 15, 2015
A
Laurie, as you might know, the P143 and P153 have mounting hardware for wall mounting and the P163 does not. Because of the weight of the P163(16 lbs) and benefits of speaker orientation, I would recommend using a wall shelf capable of handling that weight. I am using my P163's as part of a home theater 5.1 system and use floor stands (Sanus Steel Foundations SANSF304).
francis  Jan 09, 2015

I purchased the Pinpoint AM40 Side Clamping speaker wall mount. Item#121AM40B. They work great. Easy to install.

Q
It says that these speakers are rated for use with receivers that are 20-150 watts. If I have a 90w rated receiver does it make sense to get these or a pair of Polk Tsi100's? (The Polks are rated for up to 100w).
connor  Dec 25, 2014

A
Either set of speakers will work fine. You will be pushing the Polks near their limit only when your receiver volume is turned way up but how often will you do that? My suggestion is to go with the speaker that fits your application best. This may include aesthetics, size, price, etc.
samer  Dec 29, 2014
A
Connor; It depends on how loud you want to play them. I have a pair of the infinity p163. Save your money and buy the polks!! I'm selling my infinitys.
mark c  Dec 27, 2014
A
I am not an expert. I think infinity speakers are great. I would think that able to accept up to 150w would be a better speaker. This is my second pair of infinity speakers.
pat  Dec 26, 2014
A
They work and sound great. If the size is similar, then get what fits your. Budget. Unless your consider yourself a true audiophile ( in which case you also have a Macintosh tube amp) these will fit your needs

I use Yamaha 2020
luis  Aug 19, 2015
A
Any reciever will work but im a person that uses high end receivers. I use a denon avr. It's rated for 120 watts rms. But also i only use these for my back speakers i rely on my tower speakers for the front. using them on the front with a powered sub you wont go wrong. The more true power your receiver offers will only help the speaker more. underpowering them will hurt worse in the long run.
jeremy s  Jun 30, 2014
A
I would go with 100 w/channel.
andrew  Jun 29, 2014

Any Yamaha Receiver would work well.
francis  Jun 29, 2014

I bought this receiver for a pair of those speakers: Onkyo A-9050 integrated amplifier with onboard DAC It is just an amplifier without "bells and whistles", it looks very elegant in my living room. I did a lot of research to match the speakers with the amplifier. The sound is very clear and loud.
juan m  Jun 29, 2014
A
In my case it is Onkyo TX-SR608.
alexander  Jun 29, 2014

These speakers will work with any receiver or amplifier with an 8 ohm output. I use them with a 40 year old Pioneer receiver and they work great.
paul  Jun 29, 2014
A
I use a denon
