Infinity Primus PR6500cs component system

Infinity includes several mounting brackets for the 3/4" textile dome tweeter.

Built with home audio know-how

Infinity used technology from their popular Primus home speakers to design car speakers that offer strong performance without breaking the bank. The separate 3/4" edge-driven, textile dome tweeter broadcasts smooth high frequencies while an oversized, Plus One+ polypropylene woofer creates solid bass. The external crossover makes sure the woofer and tweeter get the right signals for the best possible performance. The speakers' 3-ohm impedance safely draws extra power out of your factory radio, aftermarket stereo, or an external amplifier, so you'll get a little more punch from your system. Grilles are included.

Installation note #1: These Infinity speakers don't use the standard bolt pattern, so you'll have to drill new screw holes to install them in most 6-1/2" speaker openings.

Installation note #2: You'll need a pair of our universal backstraps to install the tweeters in the factory locations.

Features

Plus One Woofer Cones: The Plus One speaker cones offer more surface area than other speakers that fit in the same size opening. This is accomplished by using a new basket design and hi-roll surround. The result is greater bass output and an increase in efficiency.

Mounting: Infinity markets these speakers as 6-1/2"; the woofers will fit in standard 6-1/2" speaker openings (approximately 5" diameter), but they do not use the standard 6-1/2" speaker bolt pattern. In order to install them in standard 6-1/2" applications you must drill new screw holes. The woofers are easily installed in many standard 4-hole 6-3/4" applications with no modification.

Tweeter Mounting: The I-Mount tweeter mounting system and Starfish mounting brackets give you several different ways to mount the tweeters:

  • I-Mount Mounting System: The tweeters can be surface or flush mounted:
    • Surface Mount: Surface mounting the tweeters involves screwing the surface-mount cup to the mounting location, then inserting and locking the tweeter into the cup.
    • Flush Mount: Flush mounting is made easy through the use of the threaded flush-mount housing and plastic locking nut. Once a cutout is made, the tweeter is installed in the flush-mount adapter, then into the flush mount housing and inserted into the hole. The large plastic locking nut is threaded onto the adapter (from behind the mounting surface) to hold the complete assembly securely in place. When flush mounted, the tweeters may be angled for optimum response and imaging.
  • Starfish Mounting Brackets: The Starfish mounting brackets allow the tweeters to be installed in factory locations behind the grilles:
    • Bottom Mount: Once the Starfish bracket is trimmed, it is secured to the underside of the grille panel. The tweeter must be inserted into the bracket and locked into place before the bracket is mounted.
    • Surface Mount: Once the Starfish bracket is trimmed, it is screwed to the top of the mounting surface behind the grille panel. Then, the tweeter is inserted into the bracket and locked into place.
    • Flush Mount: There are two sets of tabs to flush mount the tweeter in the Starfish bracket, yielding different mounting dimensions. The upper tabs mount the tweeter completely below the opening and are glued in place. The lower mounting tabs are screwed in place and result in a mounting height just under a half inch. Once the bracket is mounted, the tweeter is inserted into the bracket and locked into place.

Mounting Dimensions:

I-Mount Surface Mount I-Mount Flush Mount Starfish Bottom Mount Starfish Surface Mount Starfish Flush Mount Starfish Flush Mount (below mounting surface)
Mounting Height 0.883" 0.67" 0.0" 0.873" 0.406" 0.0"
Depth 0.5" (screw depth) 0.77" 1.011" 0.5" (screw depth) 0.534" 0.94"
Frame Diameter 1.482" 1.84" 3.012" 2.444" 2.316" 3.012"
Cutout Diameter N/A 1.58" N/A N/A 1.508" 2.6"

Crossovers: The 1st order 2-way crossovers' inputs and outputs are screw terminals; they will accommodate bare wire or spade connectors up to 0.3" wide. There are four mounting holes in each crossover.

Crossover Dimensions:

  • Width: 2.165"
  • Height: 0.97"
  • Depth: 2.207"

3-ohm Voice Coil: The Primus Series speakers feature 3-ohm voice coils to compensate for the high in-line resistance of small gauge factory wiring and extract every watt from the factory receiver, increasing overall system output and efficiency (relative to 4-ohm speakers). The speakers also benefit from increased power when you upgrade the wire and add aftermarket amplifiers capable of powering a 2-ohm load.

Power Handling: Although Infinity lists the continuous average RMS power handling as 80 watts, they also list the recommended power range as 5-200 watts RMS. We've opted to list the more conservative 80 watt RMS figure on the specifications page.

Q
These come with Tweeters, do the tweeters fit in the upper tweeter location of the A pillar in a Honda 2012 Accord? (as a replacement to the tweeters already there)?

A
I don't know. I fabricated mounting brackets to install mine in a 2016 Toyota Tacoma. I thought that they were a direct fit when I bought them.
walter  Dec 31, 2017
A
Sorry...I cant help you with that car. But I was able to fit the tweeter into the factory Subaru Impreza (09) (tweeter) housing...with some very moderate work (mostly) packing it in foam.

Q
NOISE FROM MY ENGINE ?????
jamie  Sep 29, 2017
1 answer
A
If you are hearing noise through your speakers, that varies with engine rpm, something on your engine is not shielded properly. Back in the day spark plug wires were frequently the culprit. Don't know what vehicle/ options you have, can't be of much help.

Q
2002 silverado do I need to use crossovers with a component system using factory stereo and wiring? It's already wired with mid and tweets

A
You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss connection to your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see how everything integrates and discuss all the options available to you.

Q
These speakers are 3 ohm speakers. If I get a 4 channel amp like the one I listed that is 4 ohms, how does that affect the speakers?
greg  Jan 19, 2017
1 answer
A
It should yield a little more power, about 25% more MAX power . . . That amp is working wonderfully in my car with 2 sets of SO 2 way components in 5.25" and a powered SO SW . . .

Q
How's the bass with these speakers?
remington m  Dec 20, 2016

A
Thsee speakers have excellent bass. The Infinity one+ speakers move the surrounds out to the very edge of the frame adding a lot of surface area to the cone. You won't find a speaker this size that performs better.
michael  Dec 22, 2016
A
Not too bad. The tweeters are a little overwhelming if they are on the a pillar though.

Q
Will the stock radio in 2016 ford focus LS power these speakers? (Not a Sony)
thomas henry  May 22, 2016

A
Yes, but I would recommend, in the future if you can't now, a separate power amp . . .
carlos  Jan 20, 2017
A
if you are going to upgrade your speakers it is better to upgrade your receiver as well. i have never found that any stock radio can accommodate the power new speakers like these need nor the range needed, especially when components are involved. that's just personal preference though. you can always hook it up and buy the receiver later if it doesn't fit your needs sound wise. hope this helps

I have a 2013 Ford C-Max Hybrid. The factory speakers are, to say the least, lacking. Because this is a hybrid, I cannot mess with anything electronic (no amp or replacing head unit). So, will these speakers function adequately with the factory head unit?

Says it'll fit my 2002 Volvo s60. But my question is how do you mount the tweeter behind the factory tweeter grill? If i do get the right answer I will purchase these

I dont have a Volvo but I did have to modify the mount of the old speaker in the door panel to accomodate the new speaker. You might want to inquire wether the mounting kid for your vehicle addresss this because mine did not. I would suggest calling a technician over at Crutchfield to get more information as to wether their kid addresses this issue.

The speak set comes with different mounting options so it very easy to replace the factory ones or find a new location like the pillor molding and door panl I have done both and came out great sorry for the late response hope this helps

Hey Rick, The tweeters in this kit are designed to only fit in the mounts that come with the kit. You mount which every (ill call the mount a cup) Tweeter cup fits your need, then the tweeter drops into the cup and does a 1/4 turn to lock into the cup. The three style cups that come with the kit mount by either getting a hole saw and the cup drops into the hole you cut andis held in with a large nut from behind, 2 or 3 legs off the cup for a screw mount and the third is a slim style cup that a single screw goes in the middle of the bottom of the cup and the tweetewr drops in (used these in the back of my car cuse they are small and have a nice finish). I have a 2002 Honda Civic SI Hatchback and i two worried about the mount because i have stock tweeter at the front corner of each of my front doors. The tweeters in the kit are smaller then im use to seeing. With that being said the cup that your suppose to use the hole saw for (after removeing my stock tweeter and tweeter screen) dropped right into my stock tweeter holes and i was able to mount the tweeters in the stock holes. I work as a mechanic and was surprised to find this. I'm not sure you will have the same result with your volvo but i will say im very happy with the qualitiy of sound for the price point. I hope this helps with your decision, I know how hard it can be when picking after market equipment because i too like a clean stock look.

They come with a plastic "universal" mounting bracket that allows you to mount flush with a surface, recessed, or extending out of it, but they aren't the highest quality. I used them on my Tacoma, and they work well but I had to break most of the tabs off and use two of the screw anchors that come with the speakers to hold the bracket to the Tacoma factory tweeter location. Overall I have been very impressed with the quality of the speakers for the price, and you should be able to find a way to use the brackets, but it will probably be a "custom" job.
joel  Jul 20, 2014

Mounting tweets and highs is interesting. Typically you will run into them not fitting even if they should. I would mount the mids outside of the panel instead of inside. As for tweeters they are small so you can typically just cut holes and make them fit. I would not keep tweets behind a grill or mids because its going to slow the sound waves down which means it wouldnt sound the best. Tweeters can go anywhere so think about possibly removing the whole factor tweeter grill and mounting the tweeter in something else. TLDR They dont have to fit, make them fit its typically better.

I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: The Primus speakers handle enough wattage to work with an amplifier, but they are efficient enough to work with the aftermarket headunit as well. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.
