Our take on the Infinity PS212

Infinity's PS212 gives you thunderous bass you can feel as well as hear. A massive 400-watt amplifier powers this subwoofer's 12" driver to fill even the largest rooms with punchy lows. You'll enjoy deep, rumbling special effects with your favorite movies and full-bodied sound from your favorite tunes.

This sub owes its impressive performance to Infinity's exclusive MMD™ driver material. A stiff-yet-lightweight metal core helps the woofer cone maintain its shape as it moves. The result is clean, accurate bass, even during loud, intense passages in a song or movie soundtrack.

A variety of controls let you blend the subwoofer in with the rest of your system and tailor its sound to your liking. And a simple yet stylish design makes it a welcome addition to any room.

Features
Inputs and Outputs Notes

Features

Metal Matrix Diaphragm (M.M.D.): Derived from the C.M.M.D. material used in Infinity's flagship Cascade series, M.M.D. features a stiff aluminum core, anodized on both sides for increased strength and rigidity. M.M.D. transducers conduct sound faster than paper, polypropylene, and Kevlar, pushing unwanted resonances beyond the operating range of the transducer. M.M.D. drivers deliver crystal-clear, distortion-free sound from dynamic digital sources, even at high listening levels. The PS212 is equipped with a front-firing, 12" M.M.D. woofer.

Amplifier: This subwoofer is powered by a 400-watt (RMS) amplifier, rated at 20Hz - 150Hz with no more than 0.1% THD. The maximum (peak) power output is 700 watts.

Surround: For a smoother response and improved durability, the woofer uses a rubber surround.

Bass Port: There is one rear-firing bass port that allows deep bass with high acoustic efficiency and low distortion.

Gain Control: The subwoofer has a rotary control on the rear panel for adjusting the level of the bass.

Phase Switch: The subwoofer's phase switch allows you to control the phase of the subwoofer's output relative to the front speakers. If the bass sounds muddy or unclear, toggling the phase control can sometimes strengthen the bass "attack."

Auto On/Off Circuit: The auto on/off circuit turns the power amp on when a signal is sensed and turns the amplifier off and into standby mode approximately 10 minutes after a signal is no longer received. An LED indicator on the rear panel glows green when the amplifier is on and red when the amp is in standby.

Low-Pass Crossover: The subwoofer features a continuously variable 50Hz-150Hz low-pass crossover that determines the highest frequency at which the subwoofer reproduces sounds. The crossover has a 24dB/octave slope. Note: The crossover is bypassed when the "LFE/Normal" switch is in the "LFE" position.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

Line-level Inputs: The subwoofer has gold-plated stereo RCA inputs with an "LFE/Normal" switch. If you have a Dolby Digital/DTS receiver or processor with a low-frequency-effects (LFE) output, you should switch the "LFE/Normal" switch to the LFE position. If your receiver/processor does not contain a Dolby Digital or DTS processor but has a subwoofer output, you should switch the "LFE/Normal" switch to the Normal position. In either case, you may use either the Left or Right input. A "Y" adapter is not necessary.

Infinity PS212

Written By , North Carolina on Tuesday, February 07, 2012

Purchased the Infinity PS212 to replace the Boston Acoustic sub that fried on my home theater system. The Boston Acoustic sub was rated at 1000 watts, but the Infinity puts out more bass, and with better gain control. Rated at only 300 watts, it is definitely worth price. Also got an extra $80 off due to "scratch and dent" which is so minor, it can barely be seen. I would definitely recommend the PS212 for any bass application, but specifically for home theater systems.
Pros:
Small yet puts out tremendous bass.
Cons:
None

PS212 subwoofer

Written By Scott, Florida on Saturday, February 04, 2012

As with most issues in life compromise is the secret to success. The PS212 reaches this compromise with performance that is well beyond the price. The PS212 has massive reserve that I can not tap without overriding my 5.1 system main speakers that are 15". I use a crossover of 80 HZ with the volume set at the 11 O'clock position and have all the base I can handle. After one year another PS212 was purchased since my outputs support two subs. The effect is different. I now feel more base than before with lower levels, subs set to 9 O'clock position. The ported subs provide a warm and easy to listen to base level that blends well with the front and rear speakers. A Martin Logan electrostatic center speaker is used for precise and clear voice, just as the subs are used for heavy base. The PS212 is a hidden value, and will provide your non-professional system with more base than your wife will ever tolerate.
Pros:
As much base as you can reasonably tolerate in a normal size room. Underpriced for the performance level.
Cons:
At the $400.00 price point, none.

Wow this thing beats

Written By Dustin, Springfield, IL on Tuesday, December 20, 2011

I was expecting a good sub but this thing just blew me away. I only have it about half way up and it sounds amazing. I have always loved Infinity products and now have one more reason why.
Pros:
Power, sound, looks, This thing has it all
Cons:
Doesn't have the black Piano finish that the rest of my system has but its not a big deal

Infinity PS212

Written By RobG, Geismar, LA on Thursday, October 13, 2011

It was between the Definitive prosub 1000, Definitive Supercube 2000 and this one. I went with this one for the price and I also got it on scratch and dent (which you can't even notice the small scratch on the back side) so there was an additional saving. This thing rocks, I had to turn it down on the back because it really pumps out the bass, I highly recommend this subwoofer.

Not for music lovers

Written By gizmofish, Tulsa, OK on Sunday, October 09, 2011

Very boomy. If you want this sub for watching movies, and have a complete full range system and want ultra low rumble: this is the sub for you. If you want to hear clean, precise bass notes: keep shopping. This sub is very muddy and rumbly. If you love jazz, classical, and vintage rock and love to hear a good bassist walk the frets, you will hate this one. I was looking at rebuilding my 80's vintage sub or buying something new. The cost were comparable so I went with the Infinity PS 212 to go with the Infinity Primus 162 satellites I have (which are superb, by the way) and am sorely disappointed. All the five star reviews drove me to purchase this sub only to prove the physics that ported subs cannot sound right.

Strong High Quality Bass

Written By Bob, Wheat Ridge, Colorado on Tuesday, September 27, 2011

I replaced my M & K Powered Subwoofer that was purchased in 1989 and I used this sub until I purchased the Infinity PS212. I am a person who likes a lot of Bass and I also want to hear very clear highs. What really gives this infinity really great Bass is having a Bass port in the rear of the unit. I have heard number of subwoofers, my ears tell me that this sub has very smooth bass response. The system that this sub is part of has completed the front zone with all Infinity speakers. The Front R & L which are designed for Mids and high range, Center and powered subwoofer. I only have this system set-up as a 5.1 and the rear speakers are Polk Audio RTi A3s which have great high end and also produce great lows with the ported woofer with in the enclosure. The heart of the system is a Yamaha RX-A2010 with a 140 watts per channel. The Video is a Sony XBR46HX929 and the other part of the Video is a Denon Blu-ray/3D DBP-2012 UDCI

The Infinity PS212 was more than I expected. Great product with lots of clean bass. Most of the time I have to turn it down when watching a movie cause of how powerful it is.

Infinity PS212

Written By Paul S, Sheffield, AL on Thursday, July 14, 2011

I have never had a sub this large. It has way more than enough bass for what I wanted. I have the volume on level 1 and it is just right. Sound is great. If I want to rattle the house...can do that too.
