Why add a powered subwoofer?

A powered subwoofer gives you bass you can feel as well as hear. Our customers love the depth and impact their subs add to music and movies. We hear comments like "it brings out sounds I didn't know existed in discs I've watched a million times." Powered subwoofers aren't just for big bass that rattles your picture frames; they can also deliver tight, accurate lows. If you haven't shopped for a powered sub in a while, you might be surprised at how small they get. Look for an ultra-compact model if you want to tuck your sub away under an end table or in a corner.

Infinity PS212 Subwoofer

Written By Noman, Nacogdoches, TX on Thursday, October 24, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought two of these units about three years. Initially, I was pleased with their performance. Then, about two months ago, one of the units died. The units were used on a regular basis but rarely pushed very hard.

Pros: Sounds great out of the box. Easily matching other subwoofers in this price range.

Cons: Reliability

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a fabulous sub woofer, be sure your pictures are on the wall and fastened properly and your windows are installed correctly. If so, you will really enjoy this sub woofer not only for movies, but also for all your music, and musical videos. Do not be afraid to buy this sub woofer for your music along with your movies videos. enjoy

Pros: The deep bass, and outstanding ability to listen your videos and your music.

Cons: Maybe, the size if you have a small area.

Very Good Sub

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Infinity PS212 is a very good sub. It does a good job down to about 30 Hz. It will do well in a fairly large room. It is well worth the price paid. Infinity has a lot of experience, they after-all, came out with the First Powered Sub, the Infinity Servo Statik 1a, in 1968. I did not give this product 5 stars because, frankly, it is not one of the best 4 or 5 subs around. But, you must also know, that you will pay 2-3 times the cost of this unit too get the best. I believe, that this model will Do The Job, for 90% of all customers who want a really good sub. I do rate Crutchfield a 5 Star Online Merchant.

Pros: A Very Good Sub. Well worth the price paid.

Cons: At this price point, there really aren't any.

Hard to tame

Written By Bubba, Michigan on Tuesday, February 21, 2012

This sub has a TON of bass. While that is great for explosions in movies it can make it frustrating for music. However, even parts in movies where you shouldnt have a ton of bass, such as scenes with music,it still can be overpowering. I've had this sub for a couple of months now and I'm still moving it around the room trying to find a happy medium. If you are looking for a sub for movies that will make you smile when the movie gets loud, then this is the sub for you. If you want to use it more for music, look for something else. I find myself having to adjust the sub level depending on what cd I listen to.

Pros: Great low end extension for explosions and LFE sounds in movies. The scene in War of the Worlds where the tripod first comes out of the ground is just jaw dropping with this sub.

Cons: Far too boomy for most music, unless you like that kind of thing

Infinity PS212! Might be too much.

Written By Phil D, Easton, MD on Saturday, February 18, 2012

This sub is quite rich in low bass and needs to be adjusted correctly or can sound 'boomy'. It is rear ported, so, I do think as such it can make placement more restricting and important. After my initial adjustment of this sub to my system, I found myself agreeing with "Not for music lovers" as I was knocking walls down and not enjoying the bass extension. I also have a (Infinity) PS38 I use for a different system and find that sub much more forgiving and easier to adjust. I think this sub is best married to an already large system.

I do like it now.

Pros: Plenty of bass. More than enough gain.

Cons: Seems to accentuate the really low- low bass. Placement may be important. More than enough gain.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased the Infinity PS212 to replace the Boston Acoustic sub that fried on my home theater system. The Boston Acoustic sub was rated at 1000 watts, but the Infinity puts out more bass, and with better gain control. Rated at only 300 watts, it is definitely worth price. Also got an extra $80 off due to "scratch and dent" which is so minor, it can barely be seen. I would definitely recommend the PS212 for any bass application, but specifically for home theater systems.

Pros: Small yet puts out tremendous bass.

Cons: None

PS212 subwoofer

Written By Scott, Florida on Saturday, February 04, 2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As with most issues in life compromise is the secret to success. The PS212 reaches this compromise with performance that is well beyond the price. The PS212 has massive reserve that I can not tap without overriding my 5.1 system main speakers that are 15". I use a crossover of 80 HZ with the volume set at the 11 O'clock position and have all the base I can handle. After one year another PS212 was purchased since my outputs support two subs. The effect is different. I now feel more base than before with lower levels, subs set to 9 O'clock position. The ported subs provide a warm and easy to listen to base level that blends well with the front and rear speakers. A Martin Logan electrostatic center speaker is used for precise and clear voice, just as the subs are used for heavy base. The PS212 is a hidden value, and will provide your non-professional system with more base than your wife will ever tolerate.

Pros: As much base as you can reasonably tolerate in a normal size room. Underpriced for the performance level.

Cons: At the $400.00 price point, none.

I was expecting a good sub but this thing just blew me away. I only have it about half way up and it sounds amazing. I have always loved Infinity products and now have one more reason why.

Pros: Power, sound, looks, This thing has it all

Cons: Doesn't have the black Piano finish that the rest of my system has but its not a big deal

It was between the Definitive prosub 1000, Definitive Supercube 2000 and this one. I went with this one for the price and I also got it on scratch and dent (which you can't even notice the small scratch on the back side) so there was an additional saving. This thing rocks, I had to turn it down on the back because it really pumps out the bass, I highly recommend this subwoofer.

Not for music lovers

Written By gizmofish, Tulsa, OK on Sunday, October 09, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very boomy. If you want this sub for watching movies, and have a complete full range system and want ultra low rumble: this is the sub for you. If you want to hear clean, precise bass notes: keep shopping. This sub is very muddy and rumbly. If you love jazz, classical, and vintage rock and love to hear a good bassist walk the frets, you will hate this one. I was looking at rebuilding my 80's vintage sub or buying something new. The cost were comparable so I went with the Infinity PS 212 to go with the Infinity Primus 162 satellites I have (which are superb, by the way) and am sorely disappointed. All the five star reviews drove me to purchase this sub only to prove the physics that ported subs cannot sound right.

Strong High Quality Bass

Written By Bob, Wheat Ridge, Colorado on Tuesday, September 27, 2011

I replaced my M & K Powered Subwoofer that was purchased in 1989 and I used this sub until I purchased the Infinity PS212. I am a person who likes a lot of Bass and I also want to hear very clear highs. What really gives this infinity really great Bass is having a Bass port in the rear of the unit. I have heard number of subwoofers, my ears tell me that this sub has very smooth bass response. The system that this sub is part of has completed the front zone with all Infinity speakers. The Front R & L which are designed for Mids and high range, Center and powered subwoofer. I only have this system set-up as a 5.1 and the rear speakers are Polk Audio RTi A3s which have great high end and also produce great lows with the ported woofer with in the enclosure. The heart of the system is a Yamaha RX-A2010 with a 140 watts per channel. The Video is a Sony XBR46HX929 and the other part of the Video is a Denon Blu-ray/3D DBP-2012 UDCI

I bought a PS212 sub for my home around tax time while on vaca. I ordered all my system through a man named PJ. He is the man! He went far and beyond to help me get the best bang for the buck. After I hooked up the sub I was amazed of the sound that it produced. I watch alot of live concerts on dvd. I own over a 100 of them. The sub makes me feel like i'm truely at a concert! The sound is so clear, and strong that not only does it vibrate the house, but every time the bass hits I feel it push on the back of my head! I matched it up with 4 P162s, a PC250 an Onkyo TX-SR608 and a Samsung 3D blue-ray. Thanks to PJ the 1500 dollars I spent went much further then I thought it would, Thank you Crutchfield and thank you PJ I'll be back .

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My home theater system is in a large, 25 ft x 25 ft family room with a vaulted ceiling - and
this 12" cone subwoofer has no trouble, even at a moderate halfway setting, filling the
room with all the action movie bass you could want. Going to the fully on setting, using
its rear control dial, it is almost too much! The floor, the walls, the furniture all shake!
You, the listener, SHAKE! WHAT FUN! This subwoofer is a lot of great quality
performance, at any price, but especially at the moderate price charged. It is not a small
unit, so make sure you have room for it. It measures 18" high, 14.5" wide, and 18" deep,
and is supposed to sit about 6" out from the wall. A true audiophile might not choose
this unit, but then, how would I know, I am not a true audiophile, just someone who loves
loud action movies.

This sub packs a sweet punch and really sounds awesome its a complment to my bose 301's and JBL surround sound. This unit is big and heavy and I wouldnt think it would be suited for small rooms. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my fourth different subwoofer and by far the best. I've had my PS212 for a couple months now and am very impressed.
I broke it in over a few days and then I cranked it up to see what it would do. I ran it through many tests and trust me, it delivers. It's not just loud, it's accurate, too. Trying to find the happy medium to leave it at one level setting for both movies and music was the only challenge. I have mine set at 40% and that is just about right for both.
I invited a couple of people over to see what they thought of it and when the first bass note of Cowboy by Kid Rock hit, they both just smiled in happy approval.
This is the first sub I've owned that had to be set out of phase. My receiver's auto-calibration feature set it that way. I tried it both ways and the receiver was right, it was way too boomy set in phase with the other speakers.
I'm sure you kind find a better sub if money is no object but for what I paid for this one, I give it a definite 5 stars.

Great performance for price + Excellent service

Written By Greg, Seattle, WA on Saturday, January 30, 2010

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this sub to replace a smaller Polk PSW10 sub with a lower limit of 30Hz. What a difference an extra 5Hz and a lot more power made. This isn't a $1000 sub so you shouldn't expect $1000 performance, but for the money this thing rocks. Music is clean and movies rumble. I gave it a workout with the first war scene in LOTR Fellowship of the Ring. With the volume level set at 50% on the sub, it easily filled my 15x20 room with sound you could feel. I have the sub paired with Primus152 bookshelf speakers. Once setup, they made a nice budget audiophile system for both movies and music.

The real story of my sub is Crutchfield's service. I originally though I had a bad sub. In the end, it was unrealistic expectation on my behalf. Even though I was in the wrong, Crutchfield sent out a replacement and were gracious throughout the entire process. That's real service. I'm glad I didn't take a chance on a different internet company.

I bought this almost a year ago, and still no issues with it. I'm running Infinity Beta series (Beta 50's, Beta c360 and 4 Beta 20's) along with 2 AVR 635's, and it seams like a great match. I originally wanted the Beta sub to match my Beta speakers, but this sub (spec wise) goes lower even though the other one was 100 more watts. I pair this along with another older sub thats not as loud (250 watts rms) but goes down to 20 htz, so its a nice fit with that as well. Its also not as boomy as i figured it would be cause of the rear port. Definitally worth it for the price.

Be sure your pictures on the wall or large entertaiment center near it are secure! I believe this thing would leveitate of the ground if you cranked it up 100% and layed it down. This think will thump anything apart if your not careful. I recommend this sub to anyone but dont forget to make sure you have room for this big thing. I have a 19'x19' room and its cranked to about 40% capacity (70% when my wife isnt around) It will blow you away. I have a Primus line up with Onkyo 806 and I was very surprised how much bass these speakers had without the sub! I havent push it to 100% yet but I'am truly afraid it will bring down the roof. If it's with in your budget buy it. it!

I have an 18x18 room that is open to the rest of the house and this sub fills the space easily with no distortion. The PS212 is a great complement to my MTX in wall speakers. This is an AMAZING sub! It reproduces the explosive action sequences of any movie as if you were right there in the theater. It's awesome with music too, I have my Onkyo TX-SR705 set to -2 and the volume knob on the sub set to 1/3 and it is more than enough. Some people may like the subs where they are very tight hitting and do not give that room filling effect, but in reality, the only reason it sounds as filling as the infinity is because, along with its powered active woofer, has two passive woofers that work off of the active woofer giving you basically three subs worth of output. The infinity sounds just as nice with one woofer and for, you can do the math, a ton cheaper! Definitely recommend this to any home theater application!

I had to turn the PS-212 down to about half volume or it would over power the PS-12. This subwoofer has all the power you would ever need with no distortion. I set the subwoofer LFE to 90hz, it really adds a deep clean low frequency when playing dolby digital movies. You can feel it drive right through you. it shakes the walls. I made a patch cord with a 1/4 on one side and RCA on the other and use my headphone out jack. It works great, just leave your tone controls flat. Tweak the bass with the gain control on the sub. It is amazing what a good subwoofer can do to fill out a system. With 400 watts of power, I cannot run the PS212 at full gain without over powering the base. With the gain in the middle, I get plenty of base to fill out the music in a big 29' by 29' basement. Even at excessive levels, there is no noticeable distortion or rattle from over driving it. I had a 200 watt 12" subwoofer, and this new PS212 is just much cleaner and fuller.

You definitely get room shaking bass from this monster. Smooth and clean, never distorts. Plenty of power to give you what you need for both movies and music. This thing is great. Don't really care for the silver cover, but I can get over it for the performance.

Metal Matrix Diaphragm (M.M.D.): Derived from the C.M.M.D. material used in Infinity's flagship Cascade series, M.M.D. features a stiff aluminum core, anodized on both sides for increased strength and rigidity. M.M.D. transducers conduct sound faster than paper, polypropylene, and Kevlar, pushing unwanted resonances beyond the operating range of the transducer. M.M.D. drivers deliver crystal-clear, distortion-free sound from dynamic digital sources, even at high listening levels. The PS212 is equipped with a front-firing, 12" M.M.D. woofer.

Surround: For a smoother response and improved durability, the woofer uses a rubber surround.

Amplifier: This subwoofer is powered by a 400-watt (RMS) amplifier, rated at 25Hz - 150Hz with no more than 0.1% THD. The maximum (peak) power output is 700 watts.

Bass Port: There is one rear-firing bass port that allows deep bass with high acoustic efficiency and low distortion.

Gain Control: The subwoofer has a rotary control on the rear panel for adjusting the level of the bass.

Low-Pass Crossover: The subwoofer features a continuously variable 50Hz-150Hz low-pass crossover that determines the highest frequency at which the subwoofer reproduces sounds. The crossover has a 24dB/octave slope. The crossover is bypassed when the "LFE/Normal" switch is in the "LFE" position.

Phase Switch: The subwoofer's phase switch allows you to control the phase of the subwoofer's output relative to the front speakers. If the bass sounds muddy or unclear, toggling the phase control can sometimes strengthen the bass "attack."

Auto On/Off Circuit: The auto on/off circuit turns the power amp on when a signal is sensed and turns the amplifier off and into standby mode approximately 10 minutes after a signal is no longer received. An LED indicator on the rear panel glows green when the amplifier is on and red when the amp is in standby.

Line-level Inputs: The subwoofer has gold-plated stereo RCA inputs with an "LFE/Normal" switch. If you have a Dolby Digital/DTS receiver or processor with a low-frequency-effects (LFE) output, you should switch the "LFE/Normal" switch to the LFE position. If your receiver/processor does not contain a Dolby Digital or DTS processor, but has a subwoofer output, you should switch the "LFE/Normal" switch to the Normal position. In either case, you may use either the Left or Right input. A "Y" adapter is not necessary.
