Why add a powered subwoofer?

A powered subwoofer gives you bass you can feel as well as hear. Our customers love the depth and impact their subs add to music and movies. We hear comments like "it brings out sounds I didn't know existed in discs I've watched a million times." Powered subwoofers aren't just for big bass that rattles your picture frames; they can also deliver tight, accurate lows. If you haven't shopped for a powered sub in a while, you might be surprised at how small they get. Look for an ultra-compact model if you want to tuck your sub away under an end table or in a corner.

Good while they last

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you like your bass (relatively) inexpensive and heavy, the PS28 is the way to go. Basically Infinity took the muscle car engine approach to this product, with performance coming more from its large size and displacement than anything else. The unit is huge and will dwarf anything in your setup that isn't a floorstanding speaker. It excels at TV programming, movies, and music. Unfortunately, I guess the tradeoff with the low price is reduced durability: mine quit on me after 4 years of ownership. Given that my Infinity center channel speaker - which gets way more action in my setup - still works, I'm guessing the issue is the amplifier, which is unfortunately covered by a 2 year warranty only.

Pros: Impressive bang for buck

Cons: Dies suddenly and out of warranty

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Translation provided by Crutchfield's Spanish Sales & Support team. Visit our new Spanish-language site at www.crutchfieldenespanol.com.

Once again, Crutchfield has shown me their sense of dedication and excellent service. Within two days, my order arrived at my front door, I installed it, and it's perfect, just what I needed to give some life to my patio's sound system. It sounds clear and accurate, and it works very well with any combination of satellite speakers. But beyond just this purchase, it's worth recognizing that the website is very trustworthy, and each representative lives for what they do, they're proud of their work, and I think more companies should emulate the service culture of Crutchfield.

Pros: Excellent sound for the price

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Highly recommend. Great sounding sub for the price. An overall excellent value! Very satisfied. Have the sub paired with infinity P162 bookshelf speakers driven by a Yamaha receiver and they sound terrific for a small system.

Pros: Great sounding sub for the price.

Cons: wish it had a high pass input out to speakers from sub.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Sound is great, nice tight bass to fill up the room. Easy set up. The price is outstanding.

Downside is that it is physically a large unit, make sure you measure where it will go. Also, the Infinity instructions could be a lot better, I was hoping for more technical information about placement, sound waves, etc. However, it was pretty slim on information.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit is more powerful than expected. Very good unit. I use it in our home and our living room is average size. I had previously wondered about getting a larger unit but am glad I went with this size of speaker of 8 inches. I have my sub woofer volume set to a very low position. If you want good base for your home theater and stereo, this will be a good choice.

Perfect Match

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased it for a small room (14' x 24') because I wanted the subwoofer sound and the SW was all I had missing. The speaker seemed like a good price, is from a reputable maufacturer, and matches two Infinity front speakers I bought 2 years ago.

It works well and there were no problems once I figured out my H. Kardon receiver needed to recalibrate itself and "turn on" the subwoofer. I've played with it some and it adds a lot of depth to the LOR opening scene and the Balwag fight. The anti-aircraft noise when the Band of Brothers drop into the war zone really sounds deep and out in the distance.

Great Subwoofer

Written By Eduardo V., Allen, TX on Wednesday, August 03, 2011

I had to update my sound system and I noticed this subwoofer was on sale and decided to try it. Well, I received it pretty quick and as soon as I added it to my receiver, I could enjoy the sound. At the beginning I had to adjust the settings until I got the perfect sound. If you are looking for a good subwoofer this is a great buy for the price. You won't be disappointed .

Nice addition to complete the 7.2 system

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Added the Infinity PS28 powered sub to compliment the Primus 3-way towers and the 3-way Primus center channel. speaker. Combined with my existing JBL bookshelf speakers and Infinity rear surrounds the 7.2 sound is incredible. The sound seems like a perfect representation of live music. The sub is strong enough to feel the presence but small enough to tuck away in the corner. It fills my 20 x 40 great room with strong accurate bass. A very good value and I am extremely satisified with the purchase.

PS 28 Powered Sub

Written By Chuck, Ga. on Thursday, June 16, 2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I added this to a 2 channel stereo application. While it isn't the loudest and proudest sub you'll hear, it does seem to do a very respectable job of adding clear defined notes to the overall sound. It's not the least bit boomy or boxy sounding. It added a subtle but definite extension to the bottom end sound of my system. The low volume performance is very good, but the higher volume is where it really shines. Overall I'm very satisfied with this compact affordable subwoofer.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Well, I've never owned a Subwoofer before, but it sounds real good! It seems to go with my system pretty well. After adding the Sub. to my system an running the receiver auto speaker set up again, it really made my other speakers come alive by transferring all the bass to the sub.

P.S. Terminator 2 is a real great movie to run audio tests with!!

Big Boomy Bass, Big Sub and Heavy

Written By Dave, Covington on Sunday, April 03, 2011

I bought this for My Yamaha Neo, It has good sound and you can have as much
boomy rap style bass as you want, but it would keep going into stand by with the
Neo. I dont think it was the sub but more of a compatabilty issue, than the
fault of the NEO or the Sub. Even though Crutchfields Tech support kind of
discouraged me, Crutchfield has a wonderful return policy and I did and got a
compact Yamaha sub and it works fine with my reciever

Provides everything you will need from a powered subwoofer. Nice lows and plenty
of dynamic sound throughout my family room. I have this sub connected to my 5.1
home theater system and it keeps getting better and better since broken in.
Don't worry the size of the woofer (8in.) is more than loud enough for any
average size room. Simply put, it rocks!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this sub to connect to my Yamaha tuner and support a polk sound bar.
This sub has plenty of clean bass. Two knobs on the back one to adjust pickup
frequency and the other a volume control make it really simple to set up for just
right sound in the room.

Music and movies sound really good. Impressed with how much bass it can crank out
with no distortion.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had a Sony for Five (5) years and decided to get rid of it because it was kinda bulky; but I never had a problem with it. After reading alot of reviews about the Infinity PS28, decided to buy it. But, from the beginning of installation, it didn't produce any sound. Then, I decided to purchase a new Sub woofer Cable, thinking that might be the problem, but it wasn't. Then, it started to produce sound, on and off, then finally I had to send it back to Crutchfield, which they gladly exchanged for me. So, I don't recommend this to anyone; even thought I probably got a bad one.

WOW!!!! Awesome product, I would definitely recommend this Sub. This sub works great with my Model 249 MITSUBISHI TV It has great bass for a 8 inch speaker It only turned up 1/3 of the level. After reading the reviews, talking to Adviser, and the price of this sub is a great deal I called them because I did not know how it would work with my TV I usually don't write a review but there were not any reviews on sub hooked to TVs.

Great Deal, Can't Be Beat

Written By Frank, Chicago, IL on Thursday, July 23, 2009

When it comes to subs the size-matters conversation actually is true. Assuming you have the right amount of power and a good tune/movie to test, the 12 will beat the 10 which will beat the 8, etc. from a purely "how much did it shake your house/chest. However, when you factor in the difference PER dollar, that starts to make less sense. I have this sub and have a 18x12 or thereabouts size room to fill. Whether its the low and constant rumbling during "King Kong" or the pounding of "Taken", the difference this has made to movie watching is incredible and my wife 1) can't imagine what the 10 inch or 12 inch sub would do to the house considering this one makes her want to leave and 2) is really happy it only cost this much, which is a STEAL compared to anything else out there.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After reading the reviews and price comparing, I bought this to go with 2 Primus 152 fronts that I bought as well. This sub box has great sound and booming bass. In fact, I had the bass jacked too high and drove my wife nuts. I scaled the bass back a bit and it really blends in nice. The phase shift is nice as well, it can tighten up the response quite a bit. I highly recommend

Excellent speaker. I have paired the Inf 362s with the C350 Center and a

Great stuff. I need to upgrade my rear speakers, which are dated. Great
sound, great value.

great deal on a solid product

Written By showen, S.F. Bay Area on Thursday, October 09, 2008

After reviewing the products on Crutchfield last Holiday I bought the PS28, silver grill version, to match my white Bose 161's, also from Crutchfield. The deal at the time was too good to pass and I have been extremely satisfied ever since with its performance and value. The bass completes the satellites and helps fill the room (18' x 14') with balanced sound. I installed the 161's in the ceiling corners with the PS28 just past mid-room near the TV. The components are powered by my trusty old Yamaha receiver.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this sub from the Crutchfield scratch and dent store. I cannot find any scratches or dents and it works perfectly! This sub has a good warranty and sounds really good, especially for the price. I got it to replace a 10" sub that came with a 6.1 speaker package. It fits real well with my center, vintage fronts, and sides and rear. Good deep base from a 8" cone and plenty of power for my medium size room. The enclosure is definately tuned well, using two small ports on the back. It is not boomy if tuned and placed correctly. Sounds great for music too, supplements the fronts really nice on the low end and can play as loud as I can stand.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The PS28 really rocks. Don't let the fact that it's only an 8" sub bother you. The 150 watt amp really makes this sub punch. I've added two of these to go along with my PS212 in the home theater room. The PS212 is great for those really low notes but adding these two 8's adds more punch to the overall sound.

I really wasn't expecting to be impressed by this product but was pleasantly surprised once I flipped the power switch on and heard the bass coming from them.

The only down side I've found is that the sub makes a very loud thump when it goes into power save mode. I haven't noticed this with other Infinity subs. Usually, the thump happens when they switch back on. Either way, it's only a minor issue and I would definitely buy this product again.

Just Fine

Using TX-805 Onkyo with Infinity 360's in the front, C350 Center, and four
162's for surr-rears. The 8" sub powers the lower base just fine in a room
with dimensions 18'6' x 24'. The 360's handle to 120 crossover and the
Sub 8 handles the dish rattling just fine. Just ran " No Country for old men"
and the neighbors thought our microwave exploded while they were
sitting downstairs!!! Sweet!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for a sub woofer to match my Infinity speakers I had purchased a few years back and saw the PS-8 100 watt 8" at Crutchfields scratch and dent store. When it arrived (on time as always) found out it had a bad sensor through Crutchfields technical support so my salesman called me back and upgraded me for lil or nothing to the PS-28 at 150 watts and 8" speaker, and it was brand new! It arrived (on time again) and worked like a champ! Great company (Crutchfield) and great service, and by the way, the sub is awsome !!! My neighbors love me! (Ha)

Product Research

Metal Matrix Diaphragm (M.M.D.): Derived from the C.M.M.D. material used in Infinity's flagship Cascade series, M.M.D. features a stiff aluminum core, anodized on both sides for increased strength and rigidity. M.M.D. transducers conduct sound faster than paper, polypropylene, and Kevlar, pushing unwanted resonances beyond the operating range of the transducer. M.M.D. drivers deliver crystal-clear, distortion-free sound from dynamic digital sources, even at high listening levels. The PS28 is equipped with a front-firing, 8" M.M.D. woofer.

Amplifier: This subwoofer is powered by a 150-watt (RMS) amplifier, rated at 35Hz - 150Hz with no more than 0.1% THD. The maximum (peak) power output is 300 watts.

Surround: For a smoother response and improved durability, the woofer uses a rubber surround.

Bass Ports: There are two rear-firing bass ports that allow deep bass with high acoustic efficiency and low distortion.

Gain Control: The subwoofer has a rotary control on the rear panel for adjusting the level of the bass.

Phase Switch: The subwoofer's phase switch allows you to control the phase of the subwoofer's output relative to the front speakers. If the bass sounds muddy or unclear, toggling the phase control can sometimes strengthen the bass "attack."

Auto On/Off Circuit: The auto on/off circuit turns the power amp on when a signal is sensed and turns the amplifier off and into standby mode approximately 10 minutes after a signal is no longer received. An LED indicator on the rear panel glows green when the amplifier is on and red when the amp is in standby.

Low-Pass Crossover: The subwoofer features a continuously variable 50Hz-150Hz low-pass crossover that determines the highest frequency at which the subwoofer reproduces sounds. The crossover has a 24dB/octave slope. Note: The crossover is bypassed when the "LFE" input is used.

Line-level Inputs: The subwoofer has a gold-plated LFE input (single RCA) and gold-plated stereo RCA inputs. If you have a Dolby Digital/DTS receiver or processor with a low-frequency-effects (LFE) output, you should use the LFE input on the subwoofer. If your receiver/processor does not contain a Dolby Digital or DTS processor but has a subwoofer output, you must use the stereo RCA inputs. If the receiver/processor has a mono subwoofer output, a "Y" adapter is recommended to maximize performance.
