Rock-solid bass that won't break the bank

Infinity Primus PS38 powered subwoofer

The Infinity Primus PS38 gives you deep bass at a great price.

One of the benefits of working here is getting to audition a wide range of equipment. I loved the Infinity PS38 powered subwoofer so much that I bought two of them. I use one in my home theater for thunderous special effects. Despite its modest price and relatively small footprint, it delivers incredible performance for my movies and video games. I use the other for my computer's 2.1 audio system. It blends smoothly with my bookshelf speakers for crisp musical bass.

Infinity's exclusive Metal Matrix Diaphragm driver

The Primus PS38 features Infinity's exclusive Metal Matrix Diaphragm ("MMD" for short) driver technology in the 8" front-firing woofer. It consists of a stiff aluminum core, anodized on both sides for increased strength and rigidity. The result is extremely fast, extremely accurate response, giving you distinctly cleaner, more realistic bass, even at higher volume levels. The woofer is housed in a low-resonance enclosure and powered by the sub's built-in 150-watt amplifier. It all adds up to bass that stays clear and accurate, even when you crank it up.

Build a complete Primus® system

The Infinity Primus PS38 will fill most rooms with dramatic and well-defined bass. Connect it to your receiver using either the LFE or line-level inputs. Easily accessible controls on the back of the sub help you blend it in with the rest of your system. The Primus PS38 is voice-matched with the entire Primus home theater speaker lineup, so you can create a high-quality sound system that meets your needs.

Product Highlights:

  • Metal Matrix Diaphragm® driver minimize distortion
  • 8" front-firing MMD driver
  • bass-reflex (ported) cabinet design
  • 150-watt RMS amp
  • frequency response 35-150 Hz (±3dB)
  • continuously variable 50-150 Hz crossover
  • phase switch
  • auto on/off
  • line-level stereo and LFE inputs
  • black woodgrain vinyl finish
  • 10-5/8"W x 17-3/4"H x 16-3/8"D
  • weight: 31.7 lbs.
  • warranty: 5 years speaker, 2 years amplifier
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee

Why add a powered subwoofer?

A powered subwoofer gives you bass you can feel as well as hear. Our customers love the depth and impact their subs add to music and movies. We hear comments like "it brings out sounds I didn't know existed in discs I've watched a million times." Powered subwoofers aren't just for big bass that rattles your picture frames; they can also deliver tight, accurate lows. If you haven't shopped for a powered sub in a while, you might be surprised at how small they get. Look for an ultra-compact model if you want to tuck your sub away under an end table or in a corner.

Infinity Primus PS38 Powered Subwoofer

Written by: Joe C from Boston, MA on February 8, 2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the second unit I have purchased, both from Crutchfield. It works extremely well in our city condominium as an adjunct to in-ceiling mounted Bose speakers. The adjustments on the rear of the speaker are easy to use. The clear, deep base adds an unobtrusive richness to the overall sound. Liked it so much, that I purchased a second one for our summer home, with similar results in an even larger space. It is a great unit, fairly priced.

Pros: Clean, deep base. Easily adjustable to compensate for room size and capabilities of the other speakers in the system.

Cons: Not available in white.

Great woofer! This replaced a kit 10" Infinity woofer, and in opinion it provides more and deeper bass than my old one. Great product. I bought this specific speaker to fit in a small space behind my TV stand, and glad I chose this one.

Pros: Size, sound, power, build quality....

Cons: Price is a little on the high side...

I didn't think it was "punchy" enough for our living room so I switched it with the 100w SONY we bought years ago for our deck outside and the old SONY sounds terrific in the house! Will use the new "Infinity" outside come the springtime. Would have sent it back except it's too much of a hassle.

Pros: Good enough power, just lacks real punch; probably OK for the rumble u need for home theater but not good for music

Cons: not for music

Based on previous reviews and price point, I ordered this subwoofer to replace an 8 year old sub which had died. It is part of a 5.1 surround system. After a couple weeks of using it, I can say that it works great. Very satisfied with purchase.

Pros: Performance and price point.

Cons: None that I can think of.

I bought this to supplement a set of Polk bookshelf speakers in my basement workshop and wow does this ever make a difference! The 150 watt amp is powerful enough to make the window vibrate (huge grin). Definitely a lot of sub for around 200 bucks!

Pros: Adjustable cross-over is very nice.Seems to be solidly built.

Cons: No speaker level inputs. Sub volume has to be adjusted separately from main amp.

Just picked up this sub to replace 12 inch sub that lasted me a little over 10 years. It works great in my space. Gave it a 4 out of 5 because it is replacing a 12 in, so its lacking the punch I used to have.

Pros: Affordable considering the price of home theater components

This is a surprisingly good subwoofer at a great price. I replace a larger, passive sub with this model and am enjoying the smaller footprint and great sound. The ratings helped me decide to get this sub and I'm pleased to say the high ratings are spot on.

Pros: Great lows, plenty of power, small footprint

Cons: Does not reach the lowest lows but this does not detract -- plenty of rumble/sound effects when expected.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very pleased with this product. I have only a couple to compare it with such a small Yamaha that i had on test, I think the side 8" driver does a wonderful job. Clearly for my type of classical and showtunes music the powerful amplifier is perfect to add a range of sound that was missing even from my Bose Acoustimass bass model three way system. Crutchfield as always sent it here at no charge and it is a hefty 40 pounds. I have no intent to return it or go for something gutsier. It ia a fairly large box, but seems well put together and there is a heat sink in back. I really like the automatic power down feature with red and green LED. The base does not slide easily so I put on four glides to make it easier to reposition on my vinyl floor. The finish has a quality under stated appearance. I expected no great change in sound of my system but I am delighted with the moderate but positive improvement. I decided to buy a new RCA to RCA cable and a Y splitter which seems to be what the manual suggests. But will try it with the one output from my amp as well. My am is a Yamaha stereo of medium power, The AS 500. For my 14 by 14 room the system does a decent job. As to placement I find that it works well from a number of locations...good build, nice price, and fast no charge shipping. What is not to like I think....

Pros: Price and power output. Solid construction. Readable manual. Automatic power down with no sonic output detected. Nice rocker switch and heat shield in back such touches say quality...

Cons: None I can seriously is not small but not overwhelming in size. Rubber base tips make sliding hard . Get a push on slick tip set to slide it more easily on a floor.

I called the Crutchfield technical team and described the tradeoffs I was dealing with for a sub-woofer. We went through the tradeoffs and she suggested several alternatives. I chose the Infinity and have been quite pleased with it.

Pros: Excellent sound and the documentation nicely explained the various hookup options. Another sub-woofer that I have didn't bother explaining similar options and I had to figure them out independently.

Cons: Nothing really.

Natural sound

Written by: Baltazar from California on March 22, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I upgraded a Sony sa-wm20 to this Infinity Primus PS38 to match the rest of my speakers (also Infinity Primus) and let me tell you, it made a really big difference. The Sony was good for the price, but just is no comparison to the PS38. The PS38 delivers a very natural sound, and does exactly what its supposed to, deliver great sounding bass. The PS38 really shines is making the surround sound be much closer to the theater movie experience. I like how it works really well with music, able to do very well with a variety of music from low organ tones, fast beating bass drums in metal, etc, all sounding very true to life. I got the PS38 instead of the larger Infinity Subwoofers since the others would just take up to much space being to the side of my TV. I can imagine that the bigger subwoofers would be even better, but this subwoofer sounds great, fits the room well, and saves me enough money to add a second one for 5.2 sound in the future. All in all, one of the best deals when it comes to subwoofers in its price range, and size.

Pros: Great sound, relatively small (narrow and tall), good price.

Cons: Not really a con, but if this one sounds this good, it makes one wonder what the bigger sub-woofers would sound like at not much more (if you can spare the space).

I had missed the great audio days of the 70's. Recently I purchased a Yamaha RX-V477. I wanted to get speakers that would compliment that unit. The Infinity Primus P363 tower speakers, P153 bookshelf speakers, PC251 center speaker, and PS38 woofer are great. My music sounds great. Watched a movie with the family and felt like I was in the theater. Great speakers.

Pros: Sound reproduction is very good. Enclosures allow the sound to be natural.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have an audio system with 4 Mirage bookshelf speakers and a Yamaha receiver. I was looking for a subwoofer to help round out the bottom. I'm not interested in rattling the windows; I just wanted a sub to fill in the low end and take some of the load off the bookshelf speakers. The PS 38 does exactly what I want. My system sounds more natural and more alive.

Pros: Sound, ease of use, and excellent price.

Cons: None

Exceeds Expectations!

Written by: Andrew S. from Omaha, NE on August 18, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have installed this gem on a system in a basement that is utilized on channel A for surround sound, and channel B for music with floor standing speakers. In both cases, the subwoofer out performed what I had expected. Being in my late 20's, I still remember the bass I had in my SUV when I was 16 from a pair of 12's. This sub comes the closest to jogging those memories out of the three (3) I have most recently heard at a local box store. If you are searching for an occasional rumble during a movie, or rehashing the rumble of a 90's rap song, for the price, this won't let you down.

Pros: Cleanliness of bass at full range and power when needed.

Cons: Haven't found one yet!

I use these in a 5.2 setup and they sound amazing. They have more than enough bass so I have them dialed back a bit about 60% but its still enough to make it sound like a movie theater.

Pros: Powerful Integrated amp Can support receivers that do not have a sub out Adjustable power and frequency on the sub

Cons: Due to placement the LED on the back can be distracting but some tape fixed that.

Powerful little sub. I bought this for a second sound system I have in a 2nd music room ( to really get a way from it all) and have it paired with Infinity P153 Speakers. Hooked up to a Yamaha RS700 stereo receiver a cd and turntable. I could not be more happier with this sub. In this price range you'll never beat it. I hope if you are reading this review you have dealt with Crutchfield , they are the absolute best. I seriously don't shop anywhere else. This Sub was highly recommended by an advisor there.

Pros: Its small enough that you can place it anywhere but has a big sound

Cons: none

Honestly can't imagine anyone needing more

Written by: Rick Norwood from Port Richey, FL on June 9, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Your system is only as good as it's weakest link. This sub WILL NOT be the weak link in any setup unless you are trying to have concerts in a gymnasium, even then it might hold its own. Tight, clear, clean, and unbelievable bass. It is unfortunate that floor speaker technology can't keep up with powered sub tech, I wouldn't have to have these giant 25 yr old Polk's.

Pros: It can be whatever you want. Cover the low end that your main channel can't, or rattle dishes in your neighbors house.

Cons: I think it takes like 5 mins to shut itself off when not in use.

Super Sub

Written by: Christopher M. from Connecticut on April 27, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the PS38 to pair with my Infinity P153 speakers. I have it connected into an Onkyo TX-8050 receiver. My room setup is 12'x14' and I placed the sub next to a dresser and a chair. This is the only room I have for it, so I couldn't tell you how it would sound elsewhere. The speakers are near it. The left is on the opposite side of the dresser, or about 5' away and the right is about 2' overhead (and over a few inches).

The bass compliments the overall sound of the system. It's a clean and sounds amazing. It's makes listening to music and movies so much better. It's not overpowering and doesn't drown out the other sounds. I've had the sub now for a few days. My crossover setting is 80 (which is the white dot at the "11 o'clock position") and my gain is 1/2 way or at the "12 o'clock position". I will probably readjust the settings after the break-in period.

I love this subwoofer and need to credit the folks at Crutchfield for the recommendation. I was researching a subwoofer and am so glad I went with this one. If you're looking for a "smaller" sub to go with your sound system, I would recommend this one. Also, one feature that I love is the subwoofer automatically turns off after a few minutes of no activity. Great feature.

If you're looking to add bass to a home theater in a living room or larger bedroom etc. then you might need to look at a larger subwoofer.

Pros: Clean bass Rounds out sound system Adds more realistic sound in movies Looks amazing Auto turn-off if you're not using it.

Cons: None to mention at the moment.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Love this unit. Added everything and more to my pair of bookshelf speakers. Found the perfect blend almost immediately by reading the easy to understand instruction manual. Highly recommend.

PS: and only to me, don't skimp by buying or using cheap cables. Your system will only sound as good as your weakest cable. Enjoy enjoy the sound your system has to offer. Just my opinionated 2 cents to help you enjoy your speaker/speakers. Crutchfield's website offers up some good tips on speaker placement too.

Pros: Great price, great sound.

Cons: Sub woofers am guessing by nature can be rather large compared to bookshelf speakers, or to me. Just check the dimensions before you order on to insure you have a place for it.

After one month, pleased with PS38

Written by: pb from SW FLorida on January 19, 2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Received in 3 days of order, plugged it in and was very pleased. The sub has clean, clear base you can feel but is not overpowering. Only listen to music (no surround set up) and the room is filled with sound like never before. Our large listening room and open floor plan may have paired better with a larger sub but for the price the PS38 is performing well. Bought to match with Infinity P163 bookshelf speakers. Overall pleased with both products. The P163s were very good without the sub but now they sound great. Should have bought this sub sooner.

Pros: Great base for the size and price and would recommend it.

Cons: Have to adjust the sub volume/gain for different discs and sources (between 45-65%). Would rather set it and forget it and this is why I only gave 4 stars.

UPDATED 1/27/15: This is my second review on this product. I've had the pleasure of listening to this sub for both music and tv on a daily basis, for just over a year now and it just performs flawlessly. I still can't believe how clean and how much this sub produces.

I added this sub to a larger than average living room with 10 ft ceilings. I have the room wired for surround sound, but am a music enthusiast at heart and really only interested in music listening for now. So at this point I just have 2 front speakers also in the mix (Episode) At first listen I was unsure that this sub was going to compliment the front speakers and the room. But after spending some time using the Audyssey function on my receiver - and then further manually tweaking the cross-over point by listening to bass heavy music (ultimately settling on 150 Hz )- the system got really dialed in and now sounds DYNAMITE. This sub is the perfect compliment to the range of the fronts. The room sounds extremely detailed and crisp and it's a joy to listen in (especially jazz). This sub has power to spare. Currently it's running at around 40% output. I'm confident that it will work well for Movie LFE applications. This sub is a great value.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm currently running all my audio (turntable, TV, CD player, BluRay) through a Yamaha RX-V567 amp connected to Bose 301 speakers in front and Bose 201 speakers in the rear. In addition I have an Infinity Primus 351 center speaker. The room is approximately 30' wide by 18' deep. This sub fills the space beautifully. Just great, clear bottom for the system and room. Only question is, when is a remote-controlled sub going to come around? I like to change the sub's effects depending on what I'm watching on TV or listening to and tuning it manually isn't that big a hassle, but a remote? Awesome...

Pros: Super clear, dynamic bass

Cons: Haven't found one and probably won't

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For what I wanted this is the perfect fit. Way more quality than the sound bar/sub sytem that came with my TV, more adjustability and a simple hookup with one cable to my new Sony AV receiver. Very easy install, no more sub "popping" from the old one and I can vibrate the house if I want to. Likely I'll never turn the gain over half or so because with my wood floors and stucco walls the base can overwhelm the rest of the sound. I have a pair of older Bose 302's for "front" speakers and small bookshelfs wired together and plugged into receiver as a "center" channel. It's not ideal, but it's economical and as much sound as I need in my house. I think this sub could really power a nice home theater surround for all systems but the highest dollar or most discerning audiophile. Can't go wrong, especially if you score it on sale like I did.

Pros: Price, quality, sound, ease of install/hookup

Cons: None so far.

I really didn't believe how much difference a subwoofer would make to a surround system. Now I do. If you are looking for a sub to fill out your system, then get one. If not this one, which is awesome by the way, then another, but get one. Spend some time setting it up. Placement and sound levels are important. I run this one at about half and cant believe the difference in the sound in the room.

Pros: Looks nice. Easy to set up. Sounds great.

This is a nice little sub that was the right price. Picked it up on sale for $199. Used in a 2.1 system with a Denon AVR-1913 HT Receiver and a pair of Infinity Primus P163 bookshelf speakers. Used primarily to compliment TV and movie viewing, the sub fills the room without shaking the walls. Was a great buy at $199.

Pros: Price - free delivery - ease of set-up

Cons: nothing!

Good sub , pairs nicely with my P-162's in a small , 12 by 20 room . They were good on their own but the sub adds a real depth to the music . Also use with a low end sound bar that needs to be upgraded . My next review will be my new soundbar and sub package . Never need to run at more than half volume , could easily overpower the listening stage in my set up .

Pros: Good product , nice design , great value for the money

This Sub is very impressive. The price was great too. I replaced a much higher end sub with this Infinity PS38 and I must say I like this one better. You do need to turn the volume up on the sub when the receiver is at normal listening level but once you turn the receiver up you can reduce the sub volume to about 50 % and its perfect. For those of you wondering if it works well in a room with high ceilings, it does! My room is 20x18x22 and it sounds great.

Pros: Cost, and sound

Cons: none

Great subwoofer and the price was right. Dylan suggested that I purchased this subwoofer to replace the one I had that went "belly up". He also suggested that I buy the open box subwoofer as the price was a little cheaper. Well he was right and right. Kudos to Dylan from guiding me in the right direction and I couldn't be more pleased. Just what the doctor ordered. Bass is right at about 50% volume; I could crank it up, but what's the point. Will continue to due business with Crutchfield in the future.

Delivers good bass, but must turn up to nearly 75% to get it to an appropriate volume. I have to say it performs significantly better than the Polk sub priced nearly the same. That sub was so poor I returned it. I have an 8" Definitive sub that is MUCH more powerful and clearer than this sub, but it did cost twice as much. For the price, I feel the Infinity it is a good buy. I use it just to fill in the gap missing from a pair of small bookshelf speakers when working out, but gave an older one to my parents for their home theater and it works well.

Outstanding Sub for the money!

Written by: Bill O from Chagrin Falls, OH on January 1, 2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I own 4 powered subs-the newest which the PS 38. The one to which I compare the performance of all of them is my 16 year old Cambridge Soundworks PSW-1, a 12 inch acoustic suspension powerhouse which is twice as big and cost 3x as much as the PS 38. I must say the PS 38 holds its own very well to the larger one with clear and deep bass in a 20 x 20 foot cathedral ceiling home theater room. I didn't think the PS 38 wouldn't even come close to the CSW PSW-1, but, amazingly, it does. I used the Audyssey feature on my ONKYO receiver which I also bought from Crutchfield to reset my satellite speakers with the PS 38. I was skeptical at first but Nick was right, the PS 38 is an amazing little subwoofer for the money, especially if you can get it on sale as I did. Eventually, I'll probably bring back my CSW PSW-1 into the room which I use with a SUPERCUBE III, (I think the PS 38 is as good or better), but for right now, I am still mightily impressed with the performance of the INFINITY PS 38 on all program material including CD's, DVD's, and HDTV. I can't imagine a better subwoofer for the money. Hopefully, it will also last for 16 years.

Pros: CLEAR and DEEP bass, excellent construction, size, flexible controls

Cons: NONE

Very nice sub for the money. It really puts out plenty of bass for most people. I have to keep it around 60% power to keep the wife from complaining! In a 2000 sq ft house you can hear the bass clearly from the first floor through to the second. Not really a con, but it's a little larger than expected.

Pros: Price, Value, Bass Output

Precisely the subwoofer I was imagining

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Web resources at hand, I read through my choices, the pricing, other reviews. I went with the Infinity Primus PS38 powered sub-woofer to supplement my heirloom hi-fi system (yes, bought back when stereo systems were referred to as Hi-Fidelity and there were dogs, references to 'his master's voice' and Gramophones lurking on LP labels). So, the woofer is powered from an auxiliary output on the old Yamaha CA-810 amplifier which is nested comfortably in a sea of cables, connections and switches so that I can accommodate my new BluRay disc player and a modern LED flat screen video screen (my amp back panel is fully filled). The fidelity specs for the woofer are absolutely fine for my (boomer) hearing range and for blowing out any unfortunately too nearby candles... This low end driver supplements my old sets of Tandberg Fasett (hexagonal, soccer-ball-sized) speakers which, at 4-ohms are wired in (paired) series and arranged as higher bookshelf L & R speakers... no 5.1, not yet. For my ears, the sound is amazing, subtle (I keep the SW volume toward the low end) and gives me exactly what the little Tandbergs cannot come up with. Highly, highly recommended and the Crutchfield techs are fantastic in getting you going on your way; many thanks there.

Pros: Compact, easy to situate, wonderful bass supplement

Cons: only need one

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wonderful subwoofer, especially for the money. After some initial tweaking and a good suggestion from Crutchfield's tech.s, regarding my new Denon, which they really didn't have to do as I didn't purchase it there, which actually showed class on their part, my new subwoofer is everything I hoped for. I don't have to do much by way of crossover as my receiver does it for me, however, I did experiment with the volume and about halfway seems best. Placement is important as is phase and now my bass appears to be coming from every speaker as it should be. Both movies and music are equally enjoyable. Prior to becoming injured I was privileged to play bass guitar and although my equipment was vastly different it did give me an appreciation for good sound.

Pros: Sounds great without being overpowering and has just enough adjustment capability. Couldn't currently ask for better subwoofer for me.

Cons: None. The weight issue appears to be related to the fairly massive heatsink that is there to fix the problem Infinity had with an earlier subwoofer.

Best value for money of any sub on the market

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got the PS38 to replace my PS28, which died after 4 years of use. At first I was hesitant to go with Infinity again, but after shopping around I couldn't find any other subwoofer with the same frequency response, power or a warranty period that covered both the speaker and electronics for at least 4 years. Therefore, I went with the PS38. It seems Infinity took the hot rod approach to the PS38: rather than resort to tricks to reduce its size, they simply dropped the biggest speaker into the biggest enclosure for the price point and called it a day. Of course, that results in a large, heavy device that's difficult to hide, but it's an acceptable tradeoff unless you have a very finicky spouse. Fortunately, it looks good and professional. Your visitors *will* be impressed by the sound though. No one who has heard either of my PS* units has come away without commenting favorably on it. Like the PS28 before it, you'll go deaf or get evicted due to noise violations before you hit the PS38's performance limit when its used in an apartment living room. For music, the PS38 can easily fuel a block party, but that's a double edged sword as it can easily overwhelm dialogue and cause excessive late night noise when watching movies (but then again, no one buys subs for how quiet they are). If you want a capable sub on a budget, you can't go wrong with the PS38.

Pros: - Big sound - Good, non-gimmicky design - Impresses visitors (even those who "don't care" about home theater) - Relatively low price - Effectively limitless performance in smaller spaces

Cons: - Large size makes it difficult to conceal, though it will fit under some end tables - Heavy - Can be excessively loud at night (but that's really your neighbors' problem)

Great sub for my room (especially for the price), it really fills the room with deep rich bass. The PS38 is a great addition to my surround sound system (Paradigm speakers and Harmon/Kardon receiver.) In addition to the sub Crutchfield's customer service is excellent. I had originally purchased a PS28 but there was defect in it. I was able to talk to a person almost immediately to get my problem solved and Crutchfield sent out a replacement the next day. I can not recommend them high enough.

Pros: Great sound for the money, excellent customer service

The PS38 is a terrific sub-woofer for the price, especially now that it is on sale for $199.99. It is a great addition to my Infinity Primus home theater speakers and there are many adjustments that can be made on the PS38 to hone in on the exact listening parameters set by the listener.

Pros: Excellent sound reproduction; many adjustment possibilities; size, design, excellent quality output value to price ratio.

Cons: It is quite heavy compared to my old Onkyo sub-woofer.

Hefty subwoofer -- adds richness to the two Infinity Primus P162, which themselves have pretty good range. Note that the subwoofer requires RCA audio plug cables NOT the banana plugs the Primus speakers use. And if your receiver has a dedicated single plug subwoofer output then you only need a single wire cable, not the two wire cable.

Cons: None that I experienced.

Product Research

Metal Matrix Diaphragm (M.M.D.): Derived from the C.M.M.D. material used in Infinity's flagship Cascade series, M.M.D. features a stiff aluminum core, anodized on both sides for increased strength and rigidity. M.M.D. transducers conduct sound faster than paper, polypropylene, and Kevlar, pushing unwanted resonances beyond the operating range of the transducer. M.M.D. drivers deliver crystal-clear, distortion-free sound from dynamic digital sources, even at high listening levels. The PS38 is equipped with a front-firing, 8" M.M.D. woofer.

Amplifier: This subwoofer is powered by a 150-watt (RMS) amplifier, rated at 35Hz - 150Hz with no more than 0.1% THD. The maximum (peak) power output is 300 watts.

Surround: For a smoother response and improved durability, the woofer uses a rubber surround.

Bass Ports: There are two rear-firing bass ports that allow deep bass with high acoustic efficiency and low distortion.

Gain Control: The subwoofer has a rotary control on the rear panel for adjusting the level of the bass.

Low-Pass Crossover: The subwoofer features a continuously variable 50Hz-150Hz low-pass crossover that determines the highest frequency at which the subwoofer reproduces sounds. The crossover has a 24dB/octave slope.

Note: The crossover is bypassed when the "LFE" input is used.

Phase Switch: The subwoofer's phase switch allows you to control the phase of the subwoofer's output relative to the front speakers. If the bass sounds muddy or unclear, toggling the phase control can sometimes strengthen the bass "attack."

Auto On/Off Circuit: The auto on/off circuit turns the power amp on when a signal is sensed and turns the amplifier off and into standby mode approximately 10 minutes after a signal is no longer received. An LED indicator on the rear panel glows green when the amplifier is on and red when the amp is in standby.

Line-level Inputs: The subwoofer has a gold-plated LFE input (single RCA) and gold-plated stereo RCA inputs. If you have a Dolby Digital/DTS receiver or processor with a low-frequency-effects (LFE) output, you should use the LFE input on the subwoofer. If your receiver/processor does not contain a Dolby Digital or DTS processor but has a subwoofer output, you must use the stereo RCA inputs. If the receiver/processor has a mono subwoofer output, a "Y" adapter is recommended to maximize performance.
