About the Infinity REF1200S

Bob Bihlmayer

Low-profile design

Today's compact cars offer less space for a component subwoofer, but Infinity doesn't want you to miss out on the bass you deserve. They designed the Reference Series REF1200S 12" subwoofer to fit into today's smaller enclosures without sacrificing on sound. With response that goes down to 27 Hz, you'll definitely hear the low frequencies you've been missing.

Selectable impedance

Unlike most dual-voice coil woofers which allow you to wire the two coils for different impedances, this Infinity sub features a switch which flips between 2 and 4 ohms, the most commonly used settings for a single sub. You'll be able to extract every last watt from your amplifier without compromising stability and thermal safety margins.

Reliability testing

Infinity tests every model under extreme conditions that would break lesser speakers. They freeze them, bake them, shake them, blast them with ultraviolet light and drive them at full power for days to make sure your audio investment lasts for years. Get ready for big bass in a small space.

Product Research

Features

Impedance: The Reference 1200s has a Selectable Smart Impedance switch (SSI), allowing you to easily change the speaker impedance. Choose between 2Ω and 4Ω.

Sealed Box: Infinity recommends a sealed enclosure with an internal volume of 0.75 ft³. Sealed enclosures provide the most control over a woofer, will handle more power, and provide more accurate sonic reproduction, making them suitable to all types of music.

Ported Box: Infinity recommends a ported enclosure with an internal volume of 1.75 ft³ with one 4" diameter x 10" long port. Ported (or vented) enclosures provide better efficiency in the 40-60Hz range, and are suitable for use with smaller amplifiers, giving you more bass output from less power. However, this efficiency comes at the expense of sound quality at low frequencies (40Hz and below), and control. A subsonic filter is recommended when using a ported enclosure.

Free-Air: While the Reference 1200s can be mounted in free-air (infinite baffle), the power handling decreases by half.

Bandpass Box: Infinity recommends a bandpass enclosure with a sealed chamber volume of 1 ft³ and a ported chamber volume of 1.75 ft³ with one 4" diameter x 7.5" long port. Bandpass enclosures often provide the most output available from any amplifier and subwoofer combination, but at the expense of sonic accuracy.

Customer Q&A

11 questions already asked

Q
Is this free air no box? I have a 08dts and need a replacement sub
john  Dec 30, 2023
1 answer
A
The Infinity REF1200S can be mounted in a free-air installation, John. While the Reference 1200s can be mounted in free air (infinite baffle), the power handling decreases by half. This Infinity subwoofer is also not a fit for your 2008 Cadillac DTS and would require significant modifications to fit. You can consider the Hertz DS 25.3 10" in the link below which is a physical fit and would require re-drilling the mounting screw holes on installation. The Hertz DS is not a free-air rated subwoofer, but it does have the advantage of being a better fit than the 12" Infinity REF1200S. Using an aftermarket amplifier to power your replacement subwoofer is needed for the best sound quality. I hope this helps! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_301DS253/Hertz-DS-25-3.html

Q
I have 2 of these subs and current have them in a box with .88 cubic ft of volume per sub and was wondering if upgrading to 1.25 cubic ft per sub would be better of worse for these subs? there both sealed boxes running 280w rms to each sub
josiah  Aug 27, 2022
1 answer
A
That really depends on what your main goals are, Josiah. Sealed volume max per Infinity puts these right around 1 cube per speaker. IF you are considering switching to a ported box, the ideal space would be around 1.3 minimum so you could go a little larger on the box and go ported. If you stick with sealed you can rest easy knowing that .88 cubes is right what they are looking for! I hope this helps good buddy.

Q
I'm confused, it says 250watt RMS but that it supports up to 1000watts peak? What can I run with the speaker?
aden  Mar 16, 2021
1 answer
A
I am running mine with the JBL 5 channel amp that puts 350RMS to it. It hits hard and clean. No quality amp will rate at peak power. Go for RMS power and get a clean amp with low distortion and high damping factor. Build the box correctly and it will sound great.

Q
would 2 of these this pair with a RockFord Fosgate R750 1D with .67 cubic ft air space per woofer?
peter  Apr 17, 2020

A
you can do the .67 cubic ft if that is for each sub but i would recommend it is ported. it will hold back the sound some. air volume for it is important. as for the amp, you will need either a 2 or 4 ohm amp. infinity makes one that will power 2 of these subs.

I would think so, I was doing a lot of math to get the .75 Infinity wanted . I got it under the back seat of my Silverado. But I had to step the box and splay the angles to get it . If my material was thicker and I lost some area I still think they would sound fine . I love it. Infinity speaker's everywhere and J B L pushing them. Good luck!

I have 2 of these in a shallow mount truck box and they rattle my eyeballs. I believe my box is 1.9 cubic feet
daniel  Oct 03, 2019

they want .75 cubic ft for sealed box. To get this I went under drivers seat in my 73 Pontiac to get this. Works fine , love the speakers , but my seat feels like the base drum on some tunes.

Q
what type of box will work best and where can I find diagrams instructions and videos?
craig  Apr 01, 2015

A
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: There are several enclosures available for the Infinity REF1200S. The "best" box depends on what you are trying to achieve. Some things to consider: Do you have 1 sub or 2? Do you want a sealed or a ported box (clean, tight bass vs. louder, "boomy")? How much space do you have in your vehicle to accommodate the exterior dimensions? You can click on the subwoofer, and then click on the Accessories tab to see the pre-made enclosures (both sealed and ported) that will accommodate the Infinity. You can also check out this article on building box if you want to go that route: http://www.crutchfield.com/learn/learningcenter/car/subwoofers/box_building.html?showAll=N If you provide information regarding your vehicle (year, make, model, premium sound vs stock, etc) to an Advisor via email or chat, the we'll be able to advise you on the space you have available for an enclosure. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.
