About the JBL Charge

Ralph Graves
Wirelessly streaming tunes from your smartphone to a portable speaker is great — until your phone runs out of juice. That's not a problem with the JBL Charge. It's a high-quality Bluetooth speaker system and backup battery rolled into one. Its 6000mAh of stored power can deliver up to 12 hours of continuous music playback, or you can use some of that power to recharge your smartphone or other compatible portable device.

Bluetooth connectivity and big sound

The Charge lets you wirelessly stream audio from your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, tablet, laptop or other device. Inside the Charge are two 1-1/2" full-range drivers that deliver clean, clear sound, with a built-in bass port that reinforces the low tones. Thanks to JBL's advanced digital signal processing, the Charge can produce rich, full sound despite its compact design.

Convenient portability

The Charge has its own durable neoprene carrying pouch. And remember — slip the Charge into the pouch and you're also packing a handy backup battery. The system comes with an AC wall adapter, a USB adapter and mini USB charging cable. An auxiliary input lets you play non-Bluetooth portable devices through the system, too.

Features

Portable Bluetooth Speaker: The JBL Charge is a self-powered Bluetooth speaker that is ideal for your Bluetooth enabled smartphone, tablets, players and other devices. The JBL Charge portable speaker streams stereo music wirelessly from Bluetooth-enabled devices such as your Apple iOS device, Android smartphone/tablet, Blackberry, computer/PC or other devices. You will continue to use your Bluetooth-enabled device to navigate your music and to view song/artist information. This unit pairs with your Bluetooth-enabled device with a single press of a button. Once paired, the JBL Charge will automatically re-connect with your device when in wireless range (up to 33').

Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the JBL Charge.

Full-Range JBL Sound: The JBL Charge employs digital signal processing to generate room-filling audio from a compact speaker. Using two 1.5" drivers, a 10-watt amplifier, and a built-in bass port, the JBL Charge delivers full-range JBL sound with punchy bass.

Rugged Design: From its rugged enclosure and grille to the rubber end-rings and a rubber cap for its USB port, the JBL Charge has the durability that your active lifestyle demands. And it fits easily into a backpack, so you can take it from one place to the next. A soft carrying case is provided to protect the speaker during storage or travel.

Versatile Placement: The JBL Charge stereo speaker plays from either a vertical or horizontal position, so you can place it in a variety of locations.

Aux Input: In addition to built-in Bluetooth, the JBL Charge is fitted with a 3.5mm auxiliary input for connection of almost any portable audio player with a headphone output.

LED Indicator: A clearly visible LED lets you know when the built-in battery needs to be recharged, as well as when the JBL Charge is in Bluetooth listening or pairing mode.

Built-in Charger: The JBL Charge is capable of recharging the battery of your Bluetooth-enabled device from the speaker's built-in USB (type-A) port. Now you don't need to carry an extra charger to keep your devices powered up. This USB port does not support audio playback.

Rechargeable Battery: The JBL Charge stereo speaker has a built-in, 6000mAh Li-ion rechargeable battery that provides more than 12 hours of playback time on a single charge. The battery is easily recharged from the speaker's built-in USB port, using the included AC power adapter or a free USB port on your computer. The AC power adapter can also be used to power the speaker.

Q
Does this speaker support connection with more than one speaker? My Experince is that I need a device that will have a Bluetooth signal I can connect to another speaker if I want to have speakers in different rooms (the computer only sends signal to one device at a time)

not certain this is your best solution, in my experience the flip unit has a 10-15 foot range from your device. it is best used when you keep your device near the flip. So, if you are streaming pandora and leave the area, the flip will not work. I Have multiple Sonos units for your application and control the system from my ipad or iPhone. Also, the unit will only pair with a single device at a time for obvious reasons, not certaiin if you are able to pair multiple flips- however it appears you could.

I'm sorry, I can't answer your question. I have only connected the speaker to my iPad or iPhone. It is an excellent choice that has powerful sound and long battery life.

Q
Is it possible to charge the battery via USB while using it? For instance, I have a Goal Zero solar panel that outputs to USB, and I'd like to charge the JBL batteries when in the sun while still using bluetooth to listen to music.

The JBL Charge charges via a micro USB port. The single, standard USB port is for charging other devices via the Charge's internal battery. I suppose it would be possible to use an adapter to take your Goal Zero USB to micro USB. I've only ever used the supplied AC cable to charge it, but you can charge while simultaneously using Bluetooth. It is also capable of charging another device (via USB) while the Charge itself is recharging (and being used via Bluetooth). Hope this helps. Satisfied Charge and Crutchfield customer

Eric. You can charge it through the micrusb port so if you have the right connector you can. I am not sure about the regular usb on the end where you can charge your phone.

I'm honestly not sure but I doubt it. The battery is normally charged via a different cord (looks like standard cell phone connector). The USB takes battery output, but not sure if that would go backwards.

From dead probably about 4 hours. But you can play it while it is charging. It is a good small unit. Throws some serious sounds. Even some bass. I would recommend. I use it outside by the pool and it's perfect.
