Bluetooth connectivity for music and conversation

The Flip 2 has NFC (Near Field Communication). Just touch a compatible portable device — such as a smartphone or tablet — to the system for instant wireless pairing. Then with one touch you can play music, or stream audio from videos and games through the Flip 2. All without wires and without logging into a network.

When your paired smartphone receives a call, the Flip 2 turns into a speakerphone. Its built-in microphone uses SoundClear® technology to minimize echo and filter out ambient noise. Both you and your caller will enjoy a conversation with clean, clear sound.

Convenient portability

The Flip 2 has its own carrying pouch. The system comes with an AC wall adapter, and gives you up to 5 hours of portable operation from its built-in rechargeable batteries. An auxiliary input lets you play non-Bluetooth portable devices through the system, too.

Product Research

Features

Portable Bluetooth Powered Speaker: The JBL Flip 2 is a self-powered Bluetooth speaker that is ideal for your Bluetooth-enabled devices such as your Apple iOS device, Android smartphone/tablet, Blackberry, computer/PC or other devices. The JBL Flip 2 supports Bluetooth audio streaming and Bluetooth hands-free communication, as well as a simple pairing procedure.

  • Bluetooth Audio Streaming (A2DP): The JBL Flip 2 portable speaker streams stereo music wirelessly from Bluetooth-enabled devices such as your smartphone, tablet, computer, laptop, or other device. You will continue to use your Bluetooth-enabled device to navigate your music and to view song/artist information.
  • Bluetooth Hands-Free Communication (HFP): The JBL Flip 2 has built-in microphones and SoundClear echo and noise cancellation technologies, so you can use it as a hands-free speaker phone. Use the Flip 2 to answer phone calls, talk on Skype, or with Facetime. A long press of the call-answer button will activate the voice command feature of your smartphone (if applicable). You will continue to use your Bluetooth-enabled device to view video calls, manually enter phone number, and control advanced phone functions.
  • Simple Pairing (w/ NFC): A single button press pairs your Bluetooth-enabled device with the Flip 2. The speaker also supports NFC (Near-Field Communication) technology for pairing; simply tap your NFC-enabled Android smartphone to the NFC tag on the side of the speaker for instant pairing with the Flip 2 (not available for all phones). Once paired, the JBL Flip 2 will automatically re-connect with your device when in wireless range (up to 33').
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the JBL Flip 2.

Full-Range JBL Sound: The JBL Flip 2 employs digital signal processing to generate room-filling audio from a compact speaker. Using two 1.5625" drivers, a 12-watt amplifier, and a built-in bass port, the JBL Flip 2 delivers full-range JBL sound with punchy bass.

Versatile, Portable Design: The JBL Flip 2 stereo speaker plays from either a vertical or horizontal position, so you can place it in a variety of locations. And it fits easily into a backpack, so you can take it from one place to the next. A soft carrying case is provided to protect the speaker during storage or travel.

Aux Input: In addition to built-in Bluetooth, the JBL Flip 2 is fitted with a 3.5mm auxiliary input for connection of almost any portable audio player with a headphone output.

Controls: The Flip 2 provides a Power On/Off button, an Answer/End button for hands-free communication, and Pairing button. To control music playback and to make a call, you must still use your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone device.

LED Indicator: A clearly visible LED lets you know when the built-in battery needs to be recharged, as well as when the JBL Flip 2 is in Bluetooth listening or pairing mode.

Rechargeable Battery: The JBL Flip 2 stereo speaker has a built-in Lithium-ion polymer rechargeable battery (3.7V/2000mAh) that provides up to five hours of playback time. You can easily recharge the battery using the included AC power adapter. Charging time is approximately 3 hours. The AC power adapter can also be used to power the speaker.

Q
How good is the microphone, can I talk into it if it is 7 feet away?

A
Probably not 7 feet away. If you want a good speaker this one fits the bill.
jerrod j  Oct 19, 2015

Not sure about the microphone. I use it as an external speaker only and have had good performance from it.

Q
Where to get replacement chargers ?
zeddicuss  Oct 02, 2015

A
You can use any phone charger that has the micro-usb connector, any computer or laptop will also charge it from the usb port. I also use an in-wall usb outlet which has usb 2 ports. You cannot use a newer usb 3.0 style cord on the Flip2. The phone end of these chargers simply will not fit due to the wider end. An example of phone that is usb 3.0 Samsung S5 and S6. My charger failed early. I think it's a design flaw in the folding prongs connection. Its cord is durable and rugged, charger isn't. THe charger cube is the only real flaw in the Flip2.
matthew  Oct 07, 2015
A
I did not need a replacement charger, but I am sure you can obtain them from Crutchfield, JBL, or Electronic store.

Where to get replacement chargers?

The Flip uses a USB cable, mini on end to Flip, and regular on other end. Chargers and cables from most smartphones, other than Apple, will work for the Flip--at least in my experience. I also have bigger Charge speaker-it will recharge cell phones while it plays. It seems to charge faster on the charger that came with it, but the Flip doesn't seem to be particular. It's a great device!
john  Oct 05, 2015
A
Uses standard usb plug and micro usb to usb charging cable. Pretty much available anywhere.
harry  Oct 04, 2015
A
You don't need a replacement proprietary charger for the JBL Flip 2. It recharges through a built-in rechargeable battery, using a standard micro-USB connector. You should be able to buy a recharging cord with a micro-USB connector at any good electronics store like Best Buy.

Q
Can I use more than two Flip 2's around the house?
frank  Aug 20, 2014
5 answers
A
I purchased two JBL Flips and found that both speakers cannot be paired to same source device unless you also purchase a Bluetooth Transmitter & Splitter. There was a VERY slight difference in the signal sequence between the two speakers, but unless the speakers are side-by-side it's not noticeable. A transmitter/splitter is a easy solution & can be purchased for $20-$25.

hi Frank, I simply carry my Flip 2 around the house and into the yard. It's as portable as my smartphone. Why would you need more than one?
cy  Aug 23, 2014
A
Yes. I do in each room.
thomas a  Aug 23, 2014
A
I should think you could use more than one in the same home; you need to pair the speaker with the device that's sending the signal, so if you are using two different devices, or even just one, you should be able to pair each or the one to both speakers.

Will the volume buttons work to change the volume when a device is connected via the AUX INPUT? My device has a lineout only so I need to control the volume on the speaker itself.

mine don't work either. and my power charge pushed into the speaker and is unable to charge. i am trying to send it to the company and get a new one its only 2 months old :(
tara  Aug 11, 2014

Yes. The plus "+" and minus "-" buttons control the sound of the Flip 2 unit regardless of the inputs (bluetooth versus Aux).
mark m.  Jul 21, 2014

No volume control on the speaker.

Thanks for the input. I've now ordered my Flip 2 :)

The Flip2 will work with a device having a line-out connection. I use this with my older Creative Zen V:M player as well as my Galaxy S3. You can actually have both Bluetooth and Aux connected at the same time.
matthew  Jul 19, 2014
A
Hi Jesus I have used the Flip 2 only with Bluetooth up until today. But I did connect it to my mobile Sirius radio with an Aux cord today and the volume controls on the Flip 2 worked perfectly. Hope that helps!
donald s  Jul 19, 2014
A
yes, the volume levels work when receiving signal from a fixed source aux. output. The Flip does not change the volume on the device e.g ipad, computer etc. but rather the volume coming from the flip. So, the max volume output from your device is the loudest available from the flip. However, when in blue tooth mode, when you change the volume on the flip, you can see the volume control of your device move. the same thing does not happen when connected via Aux. input. I believe this is because there is no 2way communication via the Aux cord. This is a great unit, highly suggest it , have used during parties with 15- 20 people, everyone is impressed. certainly not like you are at a nightclub with low frequency techno going through your body... but plenty loud enough and clear for excellent background music etc. Enjoy

Not Sure......After every use I would nornally power down the unit so as to conserve the battery life......................Thanks

I'm sure if you had it plugged in it would be fine. But if you kept it on unplugged, I'm sure the battery wouldn't last 24 hrs on a charge while on. Ive played it nearly 3 hours connected to Bluetooth and it was down to its last level of battery charge.

Q
Does it have a hard wire option as an alternative to NYC?
m  Nov 18, 2014
5 answers
A
Yes, it does have a 'hard wire option'. It is a 3.5mm stereo connection, located next to the micro-usb charging port. The Flip2 will use both sources (Bluetooth and 3.5mm) at the same time. I normally dock it to my Galaxy S3 and I also have an older Creative Labs MP3 player with has no Wifi, BT, or NFC capabilities. Works great either way!
matthew  Nov 19, 2014
A
No, there are no jacks that would enable hard wiring. I had to get a wireless combo receiver/transceiver and plug it into the headphone jack on my receiver as it wasn't Bluetooth capable. Hope this helps, W

A
No Only bluetooth I bought two of them one works great the other lasted Only a month I would buy something else !
kirk  Nov 18, 2014
A
By NYC I'm assuming you mean bluetooth. Yes it has an auxiliary jack but you need to buy the standard 3.5 to 3.5 wire.
anthony  Nov 18, 2014
A
Yes, there is an option to use a wire as opposed to NFC (I believe that's what you meant). The wire didn't come with my speaker (I purchased one a while ago) but it fits any wire with a jack like that of a headphone's (3mm if I'm not mistaken). I hope this answers your question and good luck :)

After pairing is done, what is the re-connect/play procedure? #1) turn on and it will connect&start playing? #2) turn on, go to phone settings & select connect etc... My car does the #1 - perfect; my home (Marantz) amp, does #2 - vary much annoying.

I paired to my iPhone, and when the Flip is on and I go to my music, it plays automatically through the speaker -- no need that I have experienced to reconnect.

Frankly, I don't understand the question. Why would you want to play this speaker from your car radio or your home amp? Both have their own speakers that certainly will sound as well or better than the JBL The JBL is supposed to play off a blue-tooth enabled computer or portable player..
