Our take on the JBL GTO1214D

by Gabrielle Thorndyke
JBL

What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

Got an urge to get the lows bumping? JBL's GTO subwoofers may just fit the bill. They work great in sealed or ported boxes, so you'll get bass the way you like it. And these compact subs offer a lower profile so they fit into smaller boxes that save you space.

The GTO1214D 12" subwoofer sports a polypropylene cone, with a big rubber surround that allows plenty of cone movement without sacrificing control. A cast aluminum frame and heavy-duty dustcap reinforce the cone for lows that kick without distortion. A special integrated vent keeps the sub's internal workings cool and improves power handling capability. Dual voice coils give you more flexibility for getting the most out of your amplifier.

Note: If you are wiring this DVC sub for lower impedance, make sure that your amp is compatible. Most 2-channel car amplifiers are stable down to 2 ohms in standard mode, or 4 ohms in bridged operation. Most mono amps are stable down to 2 ohms.

To drive this single subwoofer, we recommend a mono amplifier rated between 260 and 525 watts RMS at 2 ohms. For more information, please refer to our article on How to Match Subwoofers and Amplifiers.

Enclosure Compatibility

Features

Woofer Cones: The JBL Grand Touring Series woofer features a polypropylene woofer cone with a heavy-duty molded dustcap.

Rubber Surrounds: The woofer features a rubber surround to provide exceptional cone-edge suspension and long-throw linearity with control and stability at the excursion limits.

Spider: The woofer's progressive spider provides better control at the excursion limits and reduces woofer distortion.

Dual 4-ohm Voice Coils: This woofer features dual 4-ohm voice coils that offer flexibility in wiring. When the voice coils are wired in parallel with each other, the woofer presents a 2-ohm mono load. When the voice coils are wired in series with each other, the woofer presents an 8-ohm mono load. In addition, each coil may be connected to a different amplifier channel and each channel will see a 4-ohm load.

Tinsel Wire Protector: The woofer uses a unique tinsel wire protector that also strengthen the joint between the cone, the voice coil and the spider. That joint is the most critical of all and must be able to withstand more stress than any other point in the moving assembly.

Terminals: The woofer features dual binding post terminals which can accept bare wire, pin connectors, spade lugs, and single banana plugs. Because of the spacing between the + and - terminals, they cannot accept dual banana plugs.

Die-Cast Aluminum Basket: The JBL GTO woofer features a die-cast aluminum basket for added rigidity.

Enclosure Compatibility

Recommended Sealed Box Volume: JBL recommends a 1.00 cu/ft sealed enclosure.

Recommended Ported Box Volume: JBL recommends a 1.75 cu/ft ported enclosure. One 4" diameter x 10" long port, tuned at 33Hz, should be used with the 1.75 cu/ft enclosure.

Recommended Bandpass Box Volume: JBL recommends a bandpass enclosure with a 1.00 cu/ft sealed rear chamber and a 1.25 cu/ft front ported chamber. One 4" diameter x 8" long port, tuned at 62Hz, should be used with this enclosure.

Awesome SQ

Written By Lucas M., St. Marie, MT on Friday, May 02, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought one, knowing that JBL quality came with it. The sub impressed me very much!!! The sound quality (which it does best) was awesome!! It also provided great lows in the Sound Ordinance Bass Bunker. Awesome sub for not much investment!!
Pros:
Awesome sound quality!! Great flexibility as far as enclosures go!! Dual voice coil means easier system adaptation. Quick, responsive, yet will stretch out to get LOW!!
Cons:
Unfortunately the amplifier I am using, is just too dang much for this guy!!! I wish I had room for two of them, that would be perfect. The voice coils just couldn't take the power!!

Great sub!

Written By JBL1212, Chicago,IL. on Monday, January 28, 2013

Recently got this sub and man it hits hard. The sub does take time to break in but even at low volume levels slams. I have it in a ported box powered by a Jbl GTO501EZ its around 700w, but is 500rms giving the sub more than enough power putting it around 130% a perfect sweet spot for this 350rms sub. The sub hits its highs and lows very well, it definitely shows 1400w peak. The sub unlike many others has a very solid frame keeping it strong at higher volumes. its very loud!!
Pros:
inexpensive, powerful,solid, hits every frequency
Cons:
Stinks waiting for it to break in, but its the same for almost any sub

Outstanding subwoofer!

Written By Fancyfeathers, Anchorage, Ak on Sunday, January 20, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I took a shot, not knowing much about JBL, and it was worth it. Once I got it broken in with only a 750watt amp it was really great. Superb highs and fantastic lows. Once I got a 1000watt amp then it REALLY started making noise. It's got alot of kick in it, and just for one sub! I would recommend getting this, I'm really glad I did.
Pros:
It's great if you want to have more than one subwoofer at a time, since there's dual voice coils which makes for easy wiring. It's got some weight to it, I've always liked a heavy subwoofer haha. It come with a JBL sticker! All around great sound and great quality. I'm satisfied
Cons:
If you only use one (like I am) the dual voice coil wiring is not necessary. But it doesn't affect the product to me at all, you just have to make sure you wore it properly(which isn't hard, the book tells you how to do it) other than that, there's nothing I have to complain about
