JBL GT6-6

Overview

Our take on the JBL GT6-6

If you want speakers that'll make the most out of the power they're given, JBL's GT6 Series speakers are a smart way to go. They're sensitive enough to perk up the sound of a factory radio, but tough enough to handle an outboard amplifier too. These JBLs will impress you with their powerful bass, clear highs, and strong output.

Oversized cones, powerful tweeters
The GT6-6 2-way speakers employ 6-1/2" Plus One polypropylene woofer cones — with 30% more surface area than most other 6-3/4" speakers — to dish out the lows with accuracy and strength. The vented motor design keeps the speaker cool and operating efficiently when you've got the volume cranked. Each 1" titanium-laminate tweeter projects highs that'll sparkle over the sound of road and wind noise.

Used these to replace the junk GM speakers in an Impala's front door. These sound, by comparison, awesome! The improvement is terrific! Granted they aren't DLS or Rainbow good but they aren't $300 plus dollars.

Pros: Great improvement over the factory GM junk speakers in an '06 Impala front door.

RobM from lancaster, PA on 7/9/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers impressed me right away after installation. The bass was much better than the OEM speakers, the highs were very clear and they are alot louder than the factory speakers. My Saturn is limited to four 6 1/2" sized speakers, but with 4 of these and my alpine head unit all I can say is WOW! They far exceeded expectations. While there are other more expensive speakers out there, these may be the best "bang-for-the-buck" units! Fidelity is very good for the money.

Pros: good bass for size, punchy sound, LOUD, crisp highs

Cons: mid-range clarity not world class, but ok.

These are a very nice upgrade over stock speakers. I am running these using a Pioneer FH-X700BT head unit (no external amp). I placed these JBL's in my doors and have Pioneer TS-D6902R (6x9) in the rear and stock tweeters in the dash it makes my 2011 Camry very happy and me even happier! For the money it was a great improvement and I am glad I did it.

Pros: -Price- Sound-

Cons: -Build quality seems kind of cheap ie: speaker terminals bend easily. But honestly at this price point they are probably on par with comparable brands.

AustinC from Chattanooga, TN on 6/29/2013

I paired these with JBL 6x9s and an Alpine head unit in a 1994 Toyota Camry. They sound great, and you really can't do any better for the price. They sound like they cost a lot more than they actually do. Highly recommend these speakers.

Pros: Sound Quality, Price

Cons: The system may have been lacking in bass if I had not of paired them with 6x9s, but they have better bass than most 6.5s, especially in this price range. Hardly a con.

Surprising Bass

Chris L from Raleigh, NC on 6/28/2013

2011 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced a pair of Kicker DS525s with these - these have a bigger bass sound and it doesn't get too loose in the sound. They went in easily and are definitely a step up from where I was. I did have to readjust EQ settings as now the bass (with a subwoofer) was just too overwhelming in the cab of my truck. It also introduced a lower-mid that was lacking with the other speakers. Given that the previous ones were smaller, this was to be expected. The cool thing is that this addition rounded out the sound so now my music sounds fuller and is more enjoyable. Haven't tried them with rap - never will but with classic rock, dance, country, prog-rock - great all around sound and a fullness that definitely lacks with smaller sized speakers. A good choice for a pickup door. I would put them in again without a second thought.

Pros: Full sound Tight bass Responsive

Cons: Have to tone down bass if using subwoofer

Great upgrade

I'm really impressed by these speakers. I had just purchased a set of MTX Thunder Dome coaxials for my rear deck, and was about to buy a second set for my doors when I noticed that these were on sale. The specs looked good, the reviews were great, and JBL has a good reputation, so I bought them. They fit perfectly and sound great. Not crazy bright, and they have very solid bass for a 6.5" speaker. I'm very happy with them.

Pros: Sound great. Solid Bass, Very Efficient (sound good powered only by a good head unit). Fit perfectly in my Jetta.

Cons: None.

Bought these speakers in march have blown tweeter in one. These are excellent sounding speakers was a recommended by Crutchfield. I question the quality of these since I have 4x6 kickers in rear and no issues running at full range using alpine 149. My son has 4 kickers in his car and abuses the heck out of them. Called Crutchfield about problem said they would send new asked if I could upgrade to kickers cs they said yes I paid difference they are sending new and return shipping let you know how all turns out.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Speakers sound great in my Chevy 1500. Factory stereo pushes them well. Only noticeable difference from factory speakers is a little bit tighter bass. Only issue I had was one of the speakers wires that goes to the voice coil were touching and shorting out. I separated them with a screwdriver and haven't had an issue since. The bracket for the Chevy worked great just wished they would have supplied screws to mount the speaker to the adapter. After reading other reviews I added some weather stripping tape between the bracket and the door panel to keep it nice and tight.

Pros: Great sound for a factory stereo

Cons: Terminal wires touching

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently purchased A pair of JBL GT6-6 speaker for the front of my truck. The sounded kind of good but the rear needed to be replaced as well. So i purchased another set. They all installed very quickly and easily. I already know a little about stereos and installation. But Crutchfield also included panel removal, stereo and speaker removal instructions and free speaker wiring harnesses. The service level is great from Crutchfield my stereo sounds so good now. 10 times better. eventually i will use Crutchfield prouducts again to upgrade to an amp and subwoofer. Thanks Crutchfield!

Pros: The speakers fitment was well with little alteration. I only had to re-drill mounting holes.

Cons: Compared to what my system sounded like. I have no complaints

Totally Satisfied

Ben from Hansville,Wa on 10/15/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers were exactly as advertised. Great sound at a reasonable price. They fit my Grand Cherokee speaker holes as promised and only required drilling of new holes. Piece of cake. It took more time to remove the door panels than mount the speakers and hook up with supplied wire harness adapter. I have purchased several items over the years and can't say enough about Crutchfield's products and service. I price checked these speakers elswhere online and couldn't find a better price, but even if I had I would have purchased here due to customer support and ease of installation with instructions and wiring adapters supplied at no extra charge! I even saved a few bucks by purchasing from "scratch and dent", which meant the corner of the cardboard box was wrinkled, that's it!

Pros: Awesome sound with clear crisp highs and good base response. With an older Pioneer Super Tuner 111 driving 4 of these door speakers, its all the sound these middle age ears want and more!

Cons: Zero

Great sounding speakers. They capture the highs really well, i dont know about lows since i have a subwoofer but all together great quality for the price. My only complaint is the mounting hole dont look the same as in the display photo. They have 4 small handles that stick out which made them a little difficult to mount in my 2001 civic door. They fit better in my rear deck

RSOBS from Cleveland, OH on 8/13/2012

Really impressed. Crutchfield associated talked me into these as a match for a JVC double-din head unit. I've owned lots of car speakers, but these rank among the very best I've ever owned. For the price, unbelievable value with my head unit.

Pros: Super sound, imaging, not overly bright. Great midrange.

Cons: Probably not as much bass as one would expect with a larger speaker, but adequate for sure.

1997 Chevrolet Camaro
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking to upgrade the factory speakers in my 97 Camaro convertible and found these JBL GT6-6 speakers to be a good value. I've already got some JBL home speakers that have sounded great for years, so I decided to go with these instead of trying another brand. Of course, the JBLs sound much better than the original speakers. I installed this pair in the doors without any problems at all. I'm considering getting another set for the rear panels, after I make sure that they will fit. There's less mounting depth available there because of the convertible top linkage.

Pros: Easy installation, perfect replacement for the factory speakers.

Cons: Decent bass, but not a thumper.

Very good speakers for the price. I installed two sets of these in my crappy mk3 jetta a while back with a jvc stereo and loved it. I would add a low wattage 4 way amp (45 rms x 4 would be best) to get the best clarity out of louder volumes. Unfortunately after spending a total of around $500 on my sound system im selling my jetta and I got a 2007 tacoma standard cab.... I intend on going all out on the sound system for my new truck!

Pros: Great price, very clear sound, good enough bass

Excellent bold low frequency sound and good mid to high. This 6 3/4" rear door speaker had to compliment high quality 6x9 front door speakers in a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee and they completely passed the test. They gave a clean bold presence from the rear to match the larger front speakers. I was completely satified with their sound quality. Thanks goes to the Cruthfield rep for making this suggestion to me, it was great decision. I now have the best sound in my car I've ever experienced.

These are a massive improvement over the factory speakers in my van. I am only using them for the sub woofer portion and they are performing well. I do have to adjust the bass between listening to the news (need less bass) to music (need maximum bass) but I think that is more an issue with my factory stereo.

Pros: Great price good bass response

Cons: Mounting holes did not line up, I had to drill out the existing holes to get it to fit in. I hope that does not void the warranty.

2005 Saturn VUE
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced the stock speakers in a 2005 Saturn Vue with these. The stock speakers just sounded too muffled -- maybe years of car washes did them in. I was not motivated to replace the stock radio/CD player and chose these speakers based on their sensitivity. Get plenty of volume without distortion with the stock radio, with the volume at about 1/3 of max. Vocals are clearer now and my wife enjoys listening the radio once again during her commutes. She commented that the music beat was also more prominent than before. I left the stock tweeters installed, btw. The brackets that came needed some modification to work with these speakers, specifically you had to cut out the mounting tabs on the inside diameter of the brackets. Also, you need to provide the #6 machine screws and nuts to attach the speaker to the brackets. The grilles that came with speakers got tossed because there is no way to use them, but the 'JBL' symbol is easily removed from the new grilles and can be attached to your door with some double-sided tape that is provided. While I was installing the speakers I made a rain shield from a gallon zip-lock bag to divert any water from the speaker that might come down the window slot. The installation was done about a month ago and I am very satisfied.

Pros: They sound good. They work well with the stock radio. They fit the door (with the Crutchfield-supplied brackets) and required no drilling or heroics to install.

Cons: Screws not provided. No instructions on modifying the brackets. (At first I thought the wrong brackets had been sent.)

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers are a massive improvement over my stock paper clarion's ..obviously. They sound excellent all around, and a lot of it has to do with the soundproof rubber spray and stuffing I used in lower door areas. My stock screws are an issue, and the connector adapters were so tight I had to open and lube w/electronic grease. In that situation tighter is better, and luckily my patience kicked in. The speakers seem very well constructed..Being an Audio Engineer.I have always enjoyed JBL sound.I think this model has been out for a while, and the price is a tad high.Bottom Line-The front of my suv is SlammaJammin Rawkin!w/ only the head unit Amp! I like em!

Pros: Warm mids and highs that hit a sweet spot around (11)on my Panasonic 50 watt mosfet tuner volume! The Very round extended bass for a 6 inch cone!

Cons: I compared(online) this product to several other's..and got lost in the candy shop array of car audio bliss.I researched this motor magnet size and had expectations of it being bigger.Confused it w/another product. The screw holes are tight for my factory Nissan screws..However,I prefer tighter than looser in this realm.Again I had looked at an item, and thought the tweets rotated for sweet spot position on these.they don't.Luckily my application in the front doors..I can get by without.

Excellent Buy!

Features

Plus One Woofer Cones: Each speaker uses a larger cone than other speakers of the same size. This is accomplished by using a unique basket design and hi-roll surround. The Plus One design offers greater bass output and an increase in efficiency.

Mounting: JBL refers to the GT6-6 as a 6-1/2" speaker. The 5.63" cutout diameter, however, fits the industry standard for a 6-3/4" speaker. Please confirm fit using the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector before purchasing.

Titanium Laminate Diaphragm Tweeters: Each speaker uses a titanium laminate diaphragm tweeter for fast transient highs with lower distortion.
