JBL innovation

You'll find JBL's unique Plus One woofer cone design at work here, which expands the diaphragm area of the cone to give you better low-frequency response. Edge-driven soft dome tweeters ensure a rich experience in the upper frequencies, defined by a bright, open quality. JBL builds in a UniPivot™ design that allows you to aim the tweeter's sound more directly at your ears, giving you a more detailed soundstage. You can also use the adjustable level control to tweak your tweeters to your liking, so the GTO629's sound is customized to your car.

These JBLs offer slightly lower impedance than standard car speakers, so they'll safely draw a little more power from your car stereo, yielding big volume even with low-powered factory radios. But if you want to blast these babies, they'll handle up to 60 watts RMS from an outboard amplifier.

Features

Plus One Woofer Cones: The Plus One speaker cones offer more surface area than other speakers that fit in the same size opening. This is accomplished by using a new basket design and hi-roll surround. The result is greater bass output and an increase in efficiency.

UniPivot Tweeter: The angled tweeter pivots, so it can be aimed at the listeners for better stereo imaging. You can also adjust the tweeter output level; choose between 0 (flat) and +3 dB to compensate for off-axis mounting positions or road noise.

FRP Frames: The fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) frames used in the GTO series speakers resist warping, even when mounted on uneven surfaces. The nonmagnetic carbon composite has no impact on the motor structure and doesn't resonate.

High-Output Design: The 3Ω voice coil design compensates for the high in-line resistance of small gauge factory wiring, extracting more power from factory (or aftermarket) receivers. This results in clearer, richer sound for the listener.

Size Classification Note: These speakers are marketed as 6-1/2"; they will fit standard 6-1/2 speaker openings, but do not use the industry standard bolt pattern (then again, neither do many car manufacturers at this point). Without using an adapter bracket or drilling new screw holes, the speakers fit many standard 6-3/4 applications. The included metal brackets adapt the speakers to standard 6-1/2 three hole and Ford non-symmetric four hole patterns. If new holes are drilled in the mounting surface of the car, no brackets are needed. Brackets are also included that fit select oversized 6-3/4 installations in a variety of vehicles. Please refer to the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector to confirm fit in your vehicle.

Customer Q&A

Q
The JBL car speakers are advertised at 2 Ohms but their description makes it seem as if they can be used with a 4 ohm system. My car has 2 ohm speakers in front and 4 ohm in the back. Could I buy four of these and simply swap them out? Or would I have to get a true 4 ohm spesker for the back?

If you look at JBL's website and their description of this speaker, they say it uses their "True 4 Ohm" technology which is designed to compensate for thin factory speaker wires. They also say they will provide more output than speakers of the same class. So what they're implying is that this is designed to work in the 4 Ohm speaker class and that they expect that your speaker wiring will add an extra Ohm to the equation. Honestly, that doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me as the resistances of those wires still must be minuet. The other half of that where they say you'll get more output is where it comes together and makes sense. Having the speaker resistance slightly under the amps minimum rating is going to be pushing the amp a little harder, but it WILL give you extra volume. My supposition is that they believe that the amount of extra push they're putting into your amp is negligible relative to the amps ability to handle the extra workload. Theoretically, that extra little push will wear out your amp faster, but like I said, they are just dipping their toes in in terms of overdriving the amp. I don't think any serious damage or problems would arise installing these in a 4 Ohm arrangement. I'll confirm this after I do my own install. If I can remember to...

I swapped out all four speakers (front @& rear) with the same speakers. Sounds great. Hope that helps

You will be fine for the front speakers and as for the rear going from a 4 ohm speaker a 2 ohm speaker will actually increase the output from the radio making good it a little louder. I bet your car has a factory amp in it because most cars without amps are usually run on a 4 ohm load and cars withfactory amps lime bose, Infinity,Harmon kardon, etc. Usually run at 2 ohm load. GOOD LUCK !!

The 629's are actual 3ohm nominal. So in relative terms it could be used with either 2 or 4 ohm. If you have an aftermarket deck, refer to the spec sheet as it may be 4ohm output.
