Got an urge to get the lows bumping? JBL GTO subwoofers may just fit the bill. They work great in sealed or ported boxes, so you'll get bass the way you like it. And these compact subs offer a lower profile than most subs so they fit into smaller boxes that save you space.

The GTO804 8" subwoofer sports a polypropylene cone, with a big rubber surround that allows plenty of cone movement without sacrificing control. A heavy-duty dustcap reinforces the cone for lows that kick without distortion. A special integrated vent keeps the sub's internal workings cool and improves power handling capability.

To drive this single subwoofer, we recommend a mono amplifier rated between 150 and 300 watts RMS at 4 ohms. For more information, please refer to our article on How to Match Subwoofers and Amplifiers.

What's a component sub and why would I want one?

A component sub is simply a speaker that's designed to reproduce bass once it's installed in a compatible enclosure. Think about the impact of a movie soundtrack in a big theater or even in your own home HDTV setup. A component sub can add the same kind of power to the music in your car. And a car sub is not all about the boom that you hear on a street corner (although that's cool too) - you can pair a component sub with your choice of enclosure to get bass just the way you like it, from tight and punchy to fat and loose. And once you experience music in your car with a well-tuned subwoofer, you'll never go back.

Features

Woofer Cones: The JBL Grand Touring Series woofers feature polypropylene woofer cones with a heavy-duty molded dustcap.

Hi-roll Rubber Surrounds: The woofers feature hi-roll rubber surrounds to provide exceptional cone-edge suspension and long-throw linearity with control and stability at the excursion limits.

Spider: The woofer's progressive spider provides better control at the excursion limits and reduces woofer distortion.

Shallower Design: The Grand Touring Series' new proprietary frame, unique in-board motor structure, and new cone design allow the woofer to be a full inch shallower than equivalent-sized models.

Terminals: The woofer features binding post terminals which can accept bare wire, pin connectors, spade lugs, and single banana plugs. Because of the spacing between the + and - terminals, it cannot accept dual banana plugs.

I bought this speaker to replace an odd sized 9 inch JBL low profile speaker since other people on the Internet had said it is possible to make he 8 inch work if you modify the housing however he previous subwoofer was literally 3 inches in depth which is apparently even more shallow than low profile so it won't fit since it was meant to be a replacement for the subwoofer which is locdted under the seat of my 2001 Toyota Solara convertible. The 8 inch also wasn't get same impedence which is 4.6 for the 9 inch and it would eventually have not worked properly again.

Pros: I was able to return after a lengthy discussions with one of their technical experts who was super helpful and knowledgeable once we came to the conclusion it wouldn't work. Crutchfield customer service techs are awesome!

Cons: Unless I order something else I will lose $10 for returning it.

I have a pair of them in 2 different cars - a 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse and a 1990 Nissan 300ZX. In the Mitsubishi they have been bullet proof. So I put them in the 300ZX, and both of them failed just outside of a year (beyond warranty), and had to be replaced. JBL replaced the first one even though the warranty had expired as the 300ZX is a summer only car a couple months ago. The second one failed a couple weeks ago so I purchased a replacement. I am a big fan of these sub-woofers. However, I have a concern for the consistency of quality of this product. We shall see how the second pair does over the summer...

Pros: Great sound for the money. Easy to package into smaller cars and fills the cabin with high quality sound.

Cons: Consistency of quality???

These 8" subwoofers just blew my mind. I installed a pair in my nephews Camry and was just awestruck at how well these played on 100 watts to each. They played low yet accurate and the amount of bass they put out was a lot more than what I expected.

Pros: These are really the best bang for your buck 8" subwoofers.

Cons: Haven't found one yet.

Lows have their limits but if you want deeper lows get a bigger sub. Its an 8 not a 15 but with that being said I am thoroughly impressed w/ this lil guy! It's exactly what I've been looking for! Its not overbearing enough to give you headaches like a 15 but packs enough punch for people to take notice. Its compact size is great for my 2011 Camaro! I paired it w/ a Alpine MRP-M500 which is compact as well & the 2 have been a perfect match! Compliments my other audio components well too! A Pioneer GM-D9500F Amp for my speakers & Pioneer TS-A1674R 6.5" in the doors & Pioneer TS-A6984R 6x9 in the rear deck & a Pioneer AVIC-Z120BT controlling everything!

Pros: Nice styling, Compact Size, build quality seems sturdy, nice lows

Cons: None that im aware of

Pros: Price!!

I recently bought this little sub for my F150 Ext Cab. Since space was an issue, I needed something with a shallow mounting depth that would still put out big sound. I paired it with the JBL GTO-501EZ (also bought from Crutchfield), and the sound this thing puts out is incredible. I'm only getting about 350 of the 500 Watts since its a 4 ohm sub / 2 ohm amp.. but 350 pushes it more than enough to get the bass I was looking for.

One thing you should be aware of... if you have a box custom made for this sub, the specs will call for a 7 1/8 inch cutout. That diameter is perfect for the sub itself, but the speaker terminals stick out about a 1/2 inch too far. At first it will seem impossible to get it in there, but it WILL fit without removing the terminals if you angle it just right. It's got a pretty sturdy housing around the magnet/cone, so applying a little force won't hurt it.

Pros: Sound Quality, Power Handling, Mounting Depth

Cons: Speaker terminals make it difficult to fit in the recommended cutout diameter. A different style of terminal or a different positioning of the current style would make installation a bit easier.

I wanted some more bass in my 89LX mustang. I didn't want something that would take up too much space and this sub had pretty consistent reviews. I am powering it with a Kicker ZX200.2 off of one channel for now. I plan to let it break in fully before I hit it with 200 watts. It is in a Sound Ordnance bass bunker with polyfil. The sub has a lot of range and really shines in the lows. Not something I expected from an 8" sub. It is very accurate and fast. I'm not sure I even want to run it at 200 watts. The quality I am getting with 100 is pretty satisfactory. Now if you are looking for serious bass that drowns out your highs and mids you should probably look elsewhere. This sub is for sound quality. Bass you hear more than feel. Great for any genre of music.

Pros: Serious bang for your buck.

Cons: You don't have one yet.

Definitely a quality product for little cash.

Pros: Sound quality.

Cons: If installing in a Suburban with FACTORY 8in sub. You Must use longer screws. Was told it would fit in factory hole no problem. The magnet on subwoofer is much larger than factory therefore pushing it out further. When installing quarter kick panel back over sub be careful not to damage sub as it will be in the way now. Recommmend a bud to help.

The reason i bought this sub was because all the reviews were so good. a lot of people said it sounded like a 12". they were wrong. If you want something REALLY loud get something bigger. On a different note, it doesn't take up very much room and its not terrible for when it only has to hit for a short note, after that it gets kind of bogged down.

This is a great sub. I have it in a sealed box, pushed by an Alpine PDX-5. The sub is nice and tight, with great sound quality. I'd definitely recommend this
to anyone looking for an 8" sub. Plus, it's under $100!!! You can't get much better than that.

Make sure you give it a few weeks to break in. At first, mine wouldn't play very low. But after a few weeks, it really opened up. Now it sounds fantastic.
Definitely put a smile on my face.

I purchased this sub to go inside a pre-fabbed plastic sealed box. I am pushing 150 RMS and 300 peak. This sub gets really loud before any distortion is heard. My car sounds like it has a 10" sub, but I am able to fit this in a much smaller space than a larger sub would take. My Jeep has amazingly loud, clean, tight bass without taking up much room. Great sub!

Unbelievable bass from an 8" sub

Written By Mike, Greenville, KY on Wednesday, November 25, 2009

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted more bass in my 1991 GMC regular cab truck. But, I was on a tight budget and wanted something small so I didn't have to sit up under the steering wheel. So, being on such a tight budget. I took the woofer out of an old Pioneer TS-TRX800 box. Unhooked the tweeter and replaced the sub with the JBL GTO804. It was a ported box and I wasn't expecting what I got from this little 8 inch sub. It hasn't even gotten broken in good yet and the bass is unbelievable and still getting better. This little sub puts out better bass than a lot of 10 inch subs I have had. If you are limited to an 8 inch Sub. This is the sub you want. I am gonna try the bigger JBL subs the next time I need a sub. If they are any better than this little 8. I know I won't be disappointed.

wow this is a great sub fon an 8"I original had this sub in a ported box that someone gave me and I was not really all that happy with it. It was about as loud as the 6 in speakers in our other car. i had it in there for about 5 months but it was taking up too much space inside my f150 so i custom made a .3 cubic foot box that fits under the back seat. it got so much louder and sounds much better. i had no an 8 in sub could be so loud and i only have 150 watts rms. the sound quality is very good. I listen to a lot of metal and it plays the double bass flawlessly. When put in the right box, this sub will pound.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

People crack me up getting low sensitivity subs, then they need a zillion watts to drive them. Due to space limitations in a 65 VW bug, I built a small box for this and its mounted under the rear seat. The amp only has about 200 watts and I have way more clean, tight bass than I can possibly use. So - to sum it up - great speaker, great size and better sound than I thought was even remotely possible. I love it so much that am duplcating this system in my next project car.

Subwoofer far exceeds my expectations. I built a 0.3 cu ft sealed enclosure and have about 350 watts RMS available. After tweaking the crossover and gain, I have a fairly linear response to at least 40 Hz, but am seeing 31 and 25 Hz on the RTA when playing FM radio stations (I never realized FM could carry those frequencies). This is the first sub I've built that truly rumbles instead of booms. I cannot believe this driver can sound so good for its price range. JBL still understands bass.

I have always been a Fosgate fan and even won a contest with some Fosgate 10's one time but this JBL is much better. For the F-150 supercrew owners the Qlogic 8" truck box fits perfectly under the back seat. It is a budget freindly choice for bass unless you have $500 to spend on the MTX thunderform.

Just got my sub in and was very impressed. I am a big fan of all jbl products and was not disappointed with this buy. I built my enclosure slightly oversized in a downfiring configuration. It has plenty of output for a sub in such a small box. Sounds more like a ten or a twelve. I bet four of these in say 1.5 cubes sealed would be awesome. Another A+ for jbl. Now how about my a3000gti?

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After many hours of research, I decided to go with the GTO804. I am glad I did. This is a very solid, high quality sub. I was looking for a good full sound (nothing too boomy) and this is what the doctor ordered. When I turn my amp up, this thing really thumps. But I set it back down to my liking and it still puts out a solid sound (even with the fast double bass drum riffs that I like). Unless this speaker just falls apart, I have no complaints about it... period. I just could not imagine a better sub for this price.

One of the components I used for my system

Written By B-rad, Akron, Ohio on Friday, July 21, 2006

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These JBL subs ROCK! I read some reviews that said that some people have heard 6x9's that deliver as much bass as these 8" subs, all I can say is that they didn't do something right. They didn't do the homework needed before they shelled out the jack on a product, then became disappointed by the result and ran the product down on the reviews page. These 8" subs when powered correctly, (200 wats RMS each), and mounted in the correct style enclosure, (Style #1 sealed box), punch you in the chest every time they hit. Since I did my homework and figured out what end result I wanted before I bought or made anything, the system turned out better than I ever expected. I didn't want a system that was just LOUD no matter what it sounded like, I wanted a system that had a great sound and could be loud as well. I used the Crutchfield website to make my decisions on everything I bought so it all worked well together. The sealed boxes compliment the JBL GTO subs because they absolutely kick you in the chest when you crank it up. They are not muddy or distorted, just a clean crisp thump!

best 8's for small enclosures

Written By Timothy, Indiana on Monday, July 03, 2006

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you need some 8" subs that will work in very small ported boxes these are the subs to get. I was very limited on space and only had room for a .45 ft^3 and a .55 ft^3 box. I origionally had RF stage 1 woofers in the boxes and they sounded decent but didn't really get low enough. I'm pretty picky about bass. I decided to give these a try and they exceeded my expectations. It's amazing how low these things can get in such a small enclosure. These are some of the best sounding subs I've heard. I recommend porting in the 30-35 Hz range not 40 Hz like JBL recommends.

I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: Unfortunately, the JBL GTO804 is not recommended for free-air applications. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. [ Krissy  Nov 12, 2014 ]  Staff
Using these subwoofers in your front door wold not be practical. You would need a custom enclosure for these to fit into (normally fabbed from fiberglass) and then they would stick out most likely preventing the door from closing. You have other options like installing the sub into a custom enclosure for the kick panel (depending on what kind of car/truck you have), under your seat, or use one sub in an enclosure in the middle arm rest. Another option is to run two 6.5s in your door this way you can get the volume you want with lower power. Personally that's the way I would go. [ KIRK  Jul 08, 2014 ]

This sub will work with stock configuration. It doesn't use the original harness that plugged into the stock sub, you will have to cut and splice the two wires to connect them to this speaker, not a big deal. I too am using the stock amp to power this speaker and it works well, although I believe this speaker is capable of more with an aftermarket sub. Regardless, it sounds really good with the stock amp so far. As far as fit, it is not a direct replacement. The original sub has a plastic ring that clamps the speaker down to the rear decklid. That ring will no longer fit, and I had to drill a few new holes and used some self taping screws to tighten it down. It will all fit under the original third brake light housing and look factory original. It will take a little work, but no big deal. [ GREG  Jul 01, 2014 ]
Yes it will work. However, I do recommend to upgrade your stock AMP to power it..my stock AMP will get the job done however you will be very satisfied with the upgrade results. [ DERRICK  Jul 01, 2014 ]
Mohammad, It fits in there fine, but none of the mounting holes line up. Instead of drilling into the heavy steel upside down in my trunk, I opted to silicone it in there. When you remove the old speaker, cut the wire as close to the solder as possible. There is no extra length to the wire and it is farther away from the posts of the new speaker, so it's a bit of a pain to line up. I still have the factory setup and amp and this was to replace the stock one that was blown. I am content with the sound, but it really does not punch very much. I'm sure a new head unit would bring much better performance. I'm going to add that soon. Good luck [ JEREMY  Jul 01, 2014 ]
You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you. [ Greg  Jul 01, 2014 ]  Staff

hi just wanted to thank you for answering my question. Also the JBL that the enclosure was for, sounds incredible even with a crapy amp. can't wait to get an amp that can drive it. thanks [ Dennis  Mar 11, 2014 ]
To figure cubic inches, you simply multiply width x height x depth. One cubic inch is 1"high x 1"wide x 1"deep (1" x 1" x 1"). Here's an example: if a driver requires a volume of, say 518 cubic inches, your width x height x depth should equal 518. If you want a width of, say, 12" and a depth of, say, 20", you multiply width x depth (12x20=240). Since our goal is to equal a volume of 518, you then divide 518 by 240, and this will give you the height (518 / 240 = 2.15) As a result, one example of a 518 cubic inch volume would be 12" x 20" x 1.15". Remember that these are your INTERNAL dimensions, so for a speaker cabinet, you must add the cabinet material thickness to get external dimensions. [ John  Mar 07, 2014 ]
