About the JBL GTR-104

Buck Pomerantz

Power delivered in style

JBL's GTR-104 4-channel car amplifier can deliver 100 watts RMS per channel to your front and rear speakers — serious power from a compact chassis that exudes style. Even better, you can stream music directly from a Bluetooth device to this amp, while its built-in processing restores the excitement in your music that data compression removes.

Connectivity

You can stream music from a Bluetooth device directly to this amp for convenient, wireless play that bypasses your car's radio. You can connect the amp's preamp outputs to a subwoofer amp, like the matching JBL GTR-601 or GTR-1001, so your music will have plenty of low-end punch. The Party Mode feature allows up to three different sources to stream, so more people can join in the fun.

Restores the excitement in your music

Downloaded digital music and streaming services apply data compression to their files so you can store more songs on your devices, but compressed music sounds noticeably duller than uncompressed files. Harman's Clari-Fi™ sound restoration technology improves the sound quality of your digital music by analyzing the data and then reconstructing the parts that were removed during the compression process. You get crisper highs, increased dynamics, clearer vocals, and fuller music. The included wired remote gives you handy controls for Bluetooth streaming, hands-free calling, Party Mode, and Clari-Fi signal processing.

Versatile

Need some bass power? You can switch the GTR-104 into bridged mode and drive two subwoofers with 240 watts RMS each. The variable high- or low-pass filter optimizes the amp's output to your speakers, increasing the efficiency of the system. The GTR-104 can accept low- or speaker-level inputs so it'll work in almost any system, and JBL includes RCA-to-speaker wire adapters for your convenience.

Product Research

Features

Overview: The JBL GTR-104 is part of the GTR Stadium series of high-performance amplifiers. This full range Class D 4-channel amplifier will accept both high-level and low-level inputs. Class D amplifiers are highly efficient and compact, generating lots of power without drawing much current or generating heat. The GTR-104 includes Clari-Fi, an audio restoration feature that improves the sound of compressed digital files. The amp also includes a cabin-mounted control panel to give you amplifier control at your fingertips. The unit comes with spare fuses, speaker wire-to-RCA adapters, and mounting hardware.

Power Output: The GTR-104 delivers the following power output:

  • 100 watts RMS x 4 at 4 ohms (<0.1% THD+N)
  • 120 watts RMS x 4 at 2 ohms (<0.1% THD+N)
  • 240 watts RMS x 2 at 4 ohms bridged (<0.3% THD+N)

Clari-Fi: Clari-Fi is a proprietary technology that analyzes compressed digital music files and improves them in real time. Using a predictive algorithm that restores audio content that is lost during the compression process. Clari-Fi provides extra bandwidth, especially in the high frequencies, widens the sound stage, and gives vocals a natural warmth not found in compressed files.

Control Panel: The amplifier comes with a wired control panel that provides numerous features not typically found with amplifiers. It has Bluetooth technology, and an omni-directional microphone for accepting and ending phone calls from your cell phone. Party Mode lets you pair multiple Bluetooth devices for streaming music from anyone's phone. The control panel also lets you activate the Clari-Fi feature. The panel is 4-7/16"W x 15/16"H, and has a 19.5-foot cable. It can be flush- or surface-mounted with the supplied brackets.

ADAS: The GTR-104 has an interface for the Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) that can override the audio source input to deliver a message or other audio from a connected ADAS accessory. On the amplifier, you can designate which speaker the ADAS signal is output: Front left, front right, rear left, or rear right.

Protection Circuitry: The amplifier features protection circuitry for thermal overload, over- or under-voltage (<9V or >16V), and short circuits. The LED on the top of the amp glows red if the amp goes into protection mode.

Controls: The GTR-104's controls are located on one side of the amplifier. The rotary controls require a small screwdriver (not included) to make adjustments. The amp controls include:

  • Gain: The rotary gain controls let you match the amp's input sensitivity to the output of the source unit. The input sensitivity range of the amplifier is 0.2V and up for a low-level input, and up to 20V for speaker-level input. There are separate gain controls for the front and rear channels.
  • Input Level: The Input Level switch lets you select the type of input you are using. For high-level input, there are two settings: Hi1 and Hi2. If the audio system fails to play with an amplifier connected to its output, or you get a "speaker disconnected" message on your factory stereo, set the switch to the Hi2 position. The Hi2 position includes a circuit design to fool this type of factory system into "seeing" a speaker connected to its output.
  • Crossover: The amp features switchable crossovers that can be set to low pass (LPF), high pass (HPF), or Full Range. You can adjust the cutoff frequency of the crossover from 32Hz to 320Hz using the rotary control. There are separate crossovers for the front and rear channels.

Connections: The JBL GTR-104 uses set screw terminals for the +12V power, ground, and speaker outputs. The screws can be tightened/loosened with a Phillips-head or flat-head screwdriver (not provided). The amp connections include:

  • Power/Ground: The +12V Power and Ground terminals will accept up to 4-gauge wire. It is recommended that you use 4 AWG power wire to the battery, with an in-line 60A fuse (or higher) installed no more than 18" from the battery terminal. A 4 AWG ground wire (minimum) is also recommended, and attached to a metal area close to the amplifier.
  • Remote Turn-On: The Remote turn on wire connects to the supplied plastic 2-pin Euro or Phoenix connector. The connector has tiny set screws to tighten the wire, and requires a precision screwdriver (2.4mm or 3/32"). The connector has "IN" and "OUT" terminals, allowing you to daisy chain the turn-on signal to another amplifier, if needed.
  • Speaker Outputs: The amp features screw terminals for connecting four speakers. There are markings on the terminals for bridging the amplifier.
  • Speaker-Level Input: The amp includes four bare wire-to-RCA adapters for connecting the amp to a factory radio or aftermarket head unit without preamp outputs. You should attach each speaker wire from the head unit to an adapter and plug the adapter's RCA plug into the amp.
  • Line-Level Inputs: The amplifier is equipped with two pairs of RCA inputs for connecting stereo RCA patch cables from the head unit to the amp.
  • Pre-Out: A third pair of RCA jacks is provided to output the audio signal to a second amplifier, if desired.

Q
Dose it play high resolution FLAC through bluetooth?
mark  Mar 02, 2020

I cannot answer this question. I am very happy with the sound quality, but my music storage device doesn't have high res FLAC capabilities.

Q
Wanting to use in a 87 Chevy truck was planing on running line output converter for rca connection to the amp for radio signal and then using the Bluetooth features for the phone connectivity. Will it work this way? Will I have to turn Bluetooth off on the phone to get the radio signal to play? Seems like a great way to still run my factory radio and get new updated features.
tim  Feb 28, 2020
1 answer
A
It will work without having to turn off your phone's Bluetooth when you are playing audio from the stock radio. The only exception to that is a phone call. That will override all analog audio no matter if you're playing music via Bluetooth or from the stock radio so you can hear the other person's voice.

Looking to put 2 6x9 kicker speakers, 1 4x10 kicker, and kick panel speakers into my 1966 mustang, will this do the job? If so is there room for subs?

Hey Zach wish I could help. I have a 99 Mustang with 4 speakers and the 400 watt amp . It's enough for me but I'm probably much older than u and for the music I like it's plenty . The Teck's at Crutchfield are great I would go with there recommendation. Good luck
donald  Dec 17, 2019
A
if each speaker is rated for 100w rms or higher then yes. its 100w per channel. your question is very vague. there are several different 6x9 speakers from kicker. this speaker amp is by far my favorite purchase. i run component rockford door speakers on each door and a separate pioneer sub amp for a 2 x 12inch punch enclosure. this amplifier is alot larger than some other slim models you can buy but the ampunt of power this thing puts out is outstanding. dont blow your kicker speakers by over powering them. make sure they are rated for 100w rms.

Q
What impedance doe the unit have? Just that of the connected speakers? I have a radio expecting 8 ohm impedance and I do not what to damage it......Thanks.
jonathan  Nov 01, 2019
3 answers
A
4 ohm
harry  Nov 08, 2019
A
The amplifier is stable at 2ohms so if you are running two 8ohm speakers it will be fine but not a lot of power output. The best way is to run 4 speakers that are 4ohm you can 8-8 ohm speakers in parallel which would give you a 4ohm impedance if you want to add more speakers. You have multiple wiring options
joseph  Nov 01, 2019
A
Running and 8ohms head unit and using A 4 ohm amp it cuts the powers down on the amp that's not bad it's when you start getting into Two ohms or or lower when when things start really heating up.. That's what this kids do they try to get all they can with the lower ohms and it really pushes things to the limit to get more power it's not worth it after you hook it up and have it on feel the app and the head unit.. You can tell it will get hot.... It should sound a little less loud depending on the sub or speakers the way you wire them..dual or single voice coils if you have two voice coils positive and negative across to the other voice coil that will be eight ohms just one set of voice coil Four ohms... Hope it will help... Good luck... I don't ever recamend going to low like two ohms or lower I always have the hardware that can handle with the power I have in my amps I don't try to push it harder then it can handle...

Q
Can the gain be adjusted when using Bluetooth? I am planning on installing it without a head stereo unit and want to balance the rear vs front channel, because it's for a 90 Miata using front door and seat headrest 3" speakers that cannot handle as much power as the door speakers without distortion,
miguel  Oct 11, 2019
4 answers
A
Hi Miguel, thank you for your question. If you are hoping to be able to adjust your gains via Bluetooth, you would not be able to make any adjustments like that to the amp. Any gain adjustments will take place on the amplifier. Properly tuning your amplifier upon installation will keep you from needing to adjust your gains again, once they have been set. Please chat with an Advisor online or by phone at 1-800-324-9695. Any of our amazing team of Advisors will be happy to go over this amp in more detail if you'd like.

Q
Bluetooth Hands-free microphone? I am looking to use this in my '81 Mercedes 300TD, and wish to leave the stock head unit in place. How does this unit handle hand-free (calls)? Is there a microphone included, or can one be purchased?
gregory  Sep 28, 2019
1 answer
A
Hi Greg! Thank you for your question. The JBL GTR-104 does have a mic built into the cabin controller, so no external microphone is needed for you to utilize the hands-free phone call features. Any music playing will mute when a call comes in and will stay muted for the duration of the call. Built-in echo cancellation improves call quality by preventing feedback from your car's speakers. Does Clari-Fi only work when Bluetooth is directly received through Amp vs stereo?

i have on a shelf but haven't used it yet. I plan to next weekend.
jerry  Jan 07, 2019

Clari-fi works with ant input, so if you plug the amp into your radio and play a CD or something it is supposed to work on that. Clari-fi will work with Bluetooth, but it probably won't do much since music is already coming from a digital source. Clari-fi is supposed to be used when the input is a old CD or tape or something from your radio.
bobby  Jan 07, 2019
A
It should work when going through bluetooth and through RCA as well

i am using this amp with no headunit in my car and the volume goes far past my expectations. i run the volume about 5 click from full and its extremely loud with my 100w rms rockford fosgate door speakers. im assuming its up to your speakers at this point. so yes, the amp pushes out what is promised. even while using a phone as the volume controller.
kurt  May 27, 2018

Yes, as long as you set the gain right it's really loud

Q
How do I control balance, fader, bass, and trebel?
nick  Jan 28, 2018
2 answers
A
There are controls on the amplifier itself for gain, front and rear. There are also controls for the frequency cut off, front and rear. Once you have these set to your liking, everything else is controlled with your Bluetooth device. I used my Android cell phone and the controls are limited, but adequate.I am using this amplifier in a Miata and power the front doors and a small bazooka tube. It works just fine. Take your time adjusting the controls on the amplifier itself, kind of a pain, but worth the time.
paul  Feb 03, 2018
A
You ordinarily control those functions with the audio controls built into your automobile's deck. Although you can control the "volume" of the subwoofer with the supplied auxiliary volume control that you can mount in a convenient location.

Q
How does using the phone work? Where is the microphone located? Can I connect my ipad and my iphone simultaneously so I can answer calls from iphone but listen to music from ipad?
pujan  Dec 09, 2017
2 answers
A
The microphone is on the control module that connects to the amp. It has, I believe, a 19.5' cable, so you can put it pretty much anywhere. As to how it works.. it works great. Very clear coming through and I don't seem to need to speak up for people to hear me. The only issue I had is a couple days ago, no sound would come through for the call, even though I was connected. I disconnected and reconnected, and it works fine. There is a party mode so up to 3 sources can play music, but when party mode is active, you can't use the bluetooth for calls. My fix (and current setup): aux cord for music and bluetooth connected to my phone. I'm also playing music from my phone, but I like to have a more fine control over the volume - connecting to the amp via bluetooth essentially bypasses your head unit, so you can only control the volume with your input source device.
erik m  Dec 11, 2017
A
The microphone is in the little wired remote box.

Q
What are the dimensions of the control panel? And what size opening does it fit into? Thanks!
north guy  Feb 22, 2017
1 answer
A
The faceplate dimensions are 1-7/8" H x 4-7/16" W. The opening size would be 1-1/4" H x 3-5/8" W. I did not get this from the owner's manual. I measured it myself. Also, I did not mount mine as I have it laying in a small slot in the console next to the seat, out of sight. Wasn't interested in cutting a hole in my dash.
