JBL GTX500 500W x 1 Car Amplifier

Clean bass is the name of the game with JBL's GTX500 mono amp.

Got a nice sub? Give it some serious power by JBL. The GTX500 mono subwoofer amp will send up to 500 watts RMS to your sub, filling your car or truck with powerful bass. A low-pass crossover and bass boost allow you to dial in the best tone for your subwoofer, enclosure, and vehicle.

Smart amp

The GTX500 turns itself on when it senses an incoming signal, so running a remote turn-on lead all the way from your car stereo isn't necessary. The amp also turns itself off about five minutes after the signal stops, so there's no danger of running your battery down. You can switch this feature off if you'd rather use a remote lead.

Features

Power Output: The JBL GTX500 monoblock amplifier delivers the following power output (RMS Power Output @ <1% THD, 14.4 VDC):

  • 350 watts x 1 @ 4 ohms
  • 500 watts x 1 @ 2 ohms

Protection Circuitry: The amplifier features protection circuitry for thermal overload, over- or under-voltage (<9V or >16V), and short circuits. The LED on the end of the amp glows red if the amp goes into protection mode.

Controls

Gain: The GTX500's rotary gain control let you match the amp's input sensitivity to the output of the source unit. The input sensitivity range of the amplifier 100mV - 2V for a low-level input, and 2V - 15V for speaker-level input. A small screwdriver (not included) is required to set the gain.

Input Level: The amp will accept low-level (line level) or high-level (speaker level) input signals. The input level switch lets you select the type of input you are using. For high-level input, there are two settings: Hi1 and Hi2. If the audio system fails to play with an amplifier connected to its output, or you get a "speaker disconnected" message on your factory stereo, set the switch to the Hi2 position. The Hi2 position includes a circuit design to fool this type of factory system into "seeing" a speaker connected to its output.

Crossover: The amp features a low-pass filter that is non-defeatable. It eliminates a range of high frequencies that are sent to the subwoofer. You can adjust the cutoff frequency of the low-pass filter from 45Hz to 300Hz using the rotary control. A small screwdriver is required to adjust the frequency.

Bass Boost: The GTX500 has a variable 0-12dB bass boost, centered at 45Hz. This allows you to dial in the amount of bass according to your personal taste.

Connections

Terminals: The JBL GTX500 uses set screw terminals for the +12V power, ground, turn-on (remote) lead, and speaker outputs. The screws can be tightened/loosened with a Phillips-head or flat-head screwdriver (not provided).

Power/Ground: The +12V Power and Ground terminals will accept up to 4-gauge wire. It is recommended that you use a minimum of 8 AWG power wire to the battery, with an in-line 50A fuse installed no more than 18" from the battery terminal. An 8 AWG ground wire (minimum) is also recommended, and attached to a metal area close to the amplifier.

Remote Turn-On: The Remote screw terminal will accept up to 8 AWG wire. Typically, an 18 AWG turn-on lead is included in an amplifier wiring kit.

Speaker-Level Input: The amp includes two bare wire-to-RCA adapters for connecting the amp to a factory radio or aftermarket head unit without preamp outputs. You should attach the left and right speaker wires from the head unit to each adapter and plug the adapter's RCA plug into the amp.

Line-Level Inputs: The amplifier is equipped with one pair of RCA inputs for connecting stereo RCA patch cables from the head unit to the amp. If your source unit only has one subwoofer output, you can connect it to either the left or right RCA inputs on the amp.

Speaker Outputs: The amp features screw terminals for connecting one speaker. The amplifier's minimum speaker impedance is 2 ohms, so you can connect any combination of speakers that presents a 2 ohm load or higher.

Q
Do you need a loc with the JBL GTX500?
cole  Jul 23, 2018
1 answer
A
This amp accepts high level input, so a LOC isn't needed.

Q
How many amps does it pull at full power output?
kenny  May 09, 2018
2 answers
A
500w divided by 12v equals 41.66 amps meaning you'd want to fuse it at about 50 amps on your power cable and use at least a number 8awg
dakota  May 24, 2018
A
It has 2 25 amp fuses so 50 amps I believe.

Q
What's the best way to hook this to a single 4ohm dvc speaker??

same as 2 ohm, + to + and - to -
karl  Feb 25, 2018

Wire it parallel to drop it to 2ohms to get the full potential out of the amp rated at 2ohms
jeremy  Feb 24, 2018
Q
Will it bang with two 4ohm 200rms 10inch subs?
andrew  Jan 28, 2018
3 answers
A
It most certainly will. The JBL GTX500 hooked up the right way, will have more than enough power. Wiring the two subs in parallel will make the amp see a 2 ohm load. The JBL GTX500 is rated @ 500 watts rms @ 2 ohms. Since each 10 in. sub is rated @ 200 rms. Then your 2 subs combined only need 400 watts. This amp will do the trick.
jose e.  Feb 03, 2018

I use it with 2 10" kicker comp c single coil subs and it sounds good
carlos  Feb 02, 2018

Q
will this app work for 2 jbl svc 4 ohm subs? or what type of amp do i need
jeremy  Jan 13, 2018

A
Thanks for your question. For information on selecting the best amp for your subs I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences between the amp models and help you make the best choice for your system.

Will this work with 2 Rockford fosgate r2d2 10 inch subs?
adolf  Dec 11, 2017
3 answers
A
Yes it will.
jose e.  Dec 12, 2017
A
No this amp will not work with those subs, because this a mono amp meaning made for only one sub.
imhotep  Dec 12, 2017
A
I would think so. We have one dual voice coil 12" sub and it hits really hard and we have it dialed down to about 60%.

Q
will 10 guage power cable be ok or should I be using 8? Plan on running a 4ohm sub.
matthew  Nov 12, 2017
2 answers
A
I ran a 8 gauge power wire to make sure I did not have issues on lack of power and to keep the amp from over heating. Also, remember the longer the wire run is the thicker the gauge wire needs to be too.
richard  Nov 13, 2017
A
I would go with 8 to be on the safe side. I've always used 4 gauge regardless of wattage with my amps

Q
Will this amp work with 2 JBL S2-1024? Thanks

A
They are actually a great match. Set the impedance switch on the woofers for 4 Ohms and wire them in parallel to the mono channel. The amp will provide up to 500 watts RMS (250 per woofer) and allow you to realize their full potential. I hope that helps. My Bio: https://www.crutchfield.com/bio/Ryan
ryan  Nov 13, 2017 (Staff)
A
I don't see why it wouldn't, you won't get much bang but it will be fine for adding some bump in your trunk

Q
Will this amp push kicker (2) 10c154 comp s 15" 4 ohm subwoofer in a sealed box of my 2015 Chrysler 200 good ? Cause I was told that on the phone by Crutchfield worker, subwoofer is 50-250 Watts RMS. Peak power handling: 500 watts. Because I was skeptica because I was on the phone and a previous worker told me 1000 w ken wood amp is the one for it, and I had a friend which had a 1200 w amp (4 channel). And just thought that amp will underpower the subs.
dwily  May 03, 2017

A
Sure. It's a great amp. I bought one about a year or so ago. Gets a little hot when driving bigger subs but for your application it will do just fine
john  May 04, 2017
A
Good amplifier but not enough powert to push the kicker 15 properly. Just my opinion. It pushes my 12 okay in a sealed box but it's 3/4 turned up. Get a bigger amp so you won't have to buy another after this one.
sergio  May 03, 2017
Q
Is it Marine rated?
mark  Nov 30, 2015

Not sure about moisture but it handles bumps and heavy vibrations well

Q
Where do you install this Subwoofer? Trunk or Under one of the rear seats?
larry  Jul 01, 2015

A
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: The JBL GTX500 can be mounted where ever it will fit, either under a seat or in the trunk are the typical locations. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.
