GT7-5C profile

The compact design of the GT7-5C woofer makes this system a fit for a wide variety of cars.

A cool upgrade

These GT7-5C component speakers from JBL have everything you want when shopping for a car speaker: an advanced design, quality materials, a cool look, and a practical price tag. But in the end, it's what they sound like that matters most, and true to their iconic heritage, these JBLs deliver.

How do they do it?

You'll gain a satisfying boost in sound quality from this component system, thanks to JBL's patented Plus One™ architecture, which expands the surface area of the polypropylene woofer for impressive bass. And the edge-driven dome tweeters handle a wider range in the high frequencies for more natural sound — vocals, in particular, benefit from a smoother transition from the midrange. The external crossovers direct the right frequencies to the each driver to ensure a balanced sound.

JBL built these GT7 speakers to handle up to 45 watts RMS, so they'll perform spectacularly with an aftermarket radio or amp, but with a design geared toward maximum efficiency, you'll get superior performance even from a factory radio. Grilles are included for a custom installation.

Installation note: You'll need a pair of our universal backstraps to install the tweeters in the factory locations.

  • component speaker system includes 2 woofers, 2 tweeters, and 2 external crossovers
  • 5-1/4" polypropylene Plus One™ woofer cone with foam surround
  • 1-13/16" edge-driven dome PEI tweeter
  • power range: 2-45 watts RMS (135 watts peak power)
  • frequency response: 65-20,000 Hz
  • sensitivity: 92 dB
  • woofer top-mount depth: 2-5/16"
  • grilles included
  • warranty: 1 year
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee

Why install component speakers?

A component speaker system gives you the best possible performance from your car audio system. A system consists of separate woofers, tweeters, and crossovers, each designed to cover one specific range of frequencies. As separate components, the woofer can move freely to deliver more powerful performance, while the tweeter can be custom-mounted in a better spot up closer to your ears, revealing a whole new world of detail. Separate crossovers are far superior to the simple filters wired into full-range speakers, so the components work together for smoother, more focused sound.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Speakers installed fine. Wiring diagram from mfr did not apply to my install. Bass response seems to be a little tighter, even tho factory speakers were slightly larger

Pros: Slight improvement on bass response. Maybe an add on amplifier would make a noticeable difference?

Cons: Tweeters that came with this component system sound shrill compared to old original factory tweeters. Included crossovers had virtually no effect, ended up leaving those out. Kept factory wiring as far as woofer, tweeter configuration. When wired according to factory sheet, tweeters have very little output, as if I didn't have them. Would not recommend this system. Maybe an add on amp is required to make an audible difference?

Loud and Crisp

Written By MicktheBass, Wisconsin on Friday, April 03, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I chose this speaker primarily for the high sensitivity compared to its rivals of similar price. It did not disappoint. Very loud, crisp mids and highs akin to what you get in the high-end OEM systems of top-end German cars. I ran these without an amp and they could easily keep up with my subwoofer. They cannot compete in the low-end department with more expensive component speakers, but that should not be a concern for anyone who is powering components with an HU. If you want bass, get a sub. If you want clear and crisp mids and highs, get these and power them with whatever.

Pros: Very loud, even with little amplification Wonderful resolution across the mid and high ranges Small, easily hidden crossover

Cons: No speaker wire was included for connecting the tweeters to the crossover; my experience with Polk and Infinity is that those brands provide a length of pre-cut wire with terminals for wiring your tweets.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Love the sound, easy install for the larger 5 1/4 cone. Smaller tweeter cone was a little fiddle, but I was prepared for it. Scosche brackets worked well. Now I just have to get the rear 6x9's replaced, but I am going to enjoy as is for a while Mini Cooper 2009 with stock stereo

Pros: Crutchfield directions were very good, and instant improvement to the sonic experience. Did a lot of online research before jumping in and all went swimmingly well. Thought the crossover might give me a fit, but was simple to attach and dial in. No change in the appearance of the interior.

Cons: Had to fab a bracket for the tweeter, but that went as advertised. Scosche does not seem to make little brackets. Just used some weatherstripping aluminum and tin snips.

Product Research

Plus One Woofer Cones: The Plus One woofer cones offer more surface area than other speakers that fit in the same size opening. This is accomplished by using a new basket design and hi-roll surround. The result is greater bass output and an increase in efficiency.

Tweeters: The edge-driven dome tweeters are made of PEI (Poly-Ether-Imide). PEI is a polymer film, capable of producing a wide soundstage.

Tweeter Mounting Options: Using the supplied housings the tweeters can be surface mounted flat or surface mounted at an angle (no flush mount housing is included). Once mounted in the appropriate housing, the tweeters have these dimensions:

  Surface Mount Angled Surface Mount
Mounting Depth screw depth screw depth
Mounting Height 0.884" 1.844"
Cutout Diameter N/A N/A
Frame Diameter 1.8" 1.8" x 2.21"

Connections: The passive crossovers feature screw terminal inputs and outputs; they will accommodate bare wire or spade connectors up to 1/4" wide.

Tweeter Level: A switch in each crossover allows you to adjust the output level of the tweeter; choose 0 dB or +2 dB.

Mounting: Each crossover can be mounted using two of the included screws through two holes in the base.
