JBL GT7-86

A cool upgrade

These GT7-86 speakers from JBL have everything you want when shopping for a car speaker: an advanced design, quality materials, a cool look, and a practical price tag. But in the end, it's the sound they make that matters, and true to their iconic heritage, these JBLs deliver.

How do they do it?

You'll gain a satisfying boost in sound quality from these 5"x7"/6"x8" speakers, thanks to JBL's patented Plus One™ architecture, which expands the surface area of the polypropylene woofer for impressive bass. Balanced dome tweeters handle the high notes with ease, especially when powered by an aftermarket radio or amp.

JBL built these GT7 speakers to handle up to 60 watts RMS, but with a design geared toward maximum efficiency, you'll gain superior performance even from a factory radio. Grilles are not included — factory grilles are appropriate for most installations.

If you have a ford escape this setup is perfect for a person looking for a single den unit upgrade and planning replacing the factory speakers ,another cool thing about this setup is its perfectly primed for a later sub installation. There customer service is great ,but the people seem like there trying tor rush off the phone if you don't go with their first setup ideas. Other then that all the reps i talked to where negligible and friendly. The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X300 is great sounds good , there are lot of customization options in the settings . Color select is great and you can make your own zone colors. The top of the cd player has a shiny chrome strip which my friends and i really like it sets the colors off .The speakers are good sound great ,went in like a glove .

Easiest speaker install I've ever done thanks to Crutchfield's instructions. Speakers fit just as they posted. On line person gave me the best speaker for the amp I was using. Great service.

Pros: ease of installation, most efficient drivers for low wattage factor amp. Good price.

These were a really easy replacement installation in my 2005 Ranger. The front speakers only too about 10 minutes a side to replace and the back were not bad either but the panel removal on the extended can was a major pain in the.... Speakers sound great with the new Kenwood head unit.

Pros: Good quality and value for the price

Cons: A little more bass response would be good but overall excellent deal.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers are not fabulous, but very good for 5x7's, have decent sensitivity and frequency response compared to others in the same price range.. I coupled three matching pairs to a Pioneer AVH-X5700BHS. Too bad that Ford decided to make 5x7's stock speakers in a huge cabin like the Excursion. Add a subwoofer if you really want some bass. BTW - I had NO trouble fitting these behind the front door panel of the Excursion, even though not endorsed by as a direct fit by Crutchfield. Use the foam tape gasket between the Excursion basket and speaker, and they screw right in all three stock areas (front door, rear door, C pillar)

2008 Ford Edge
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered these to replace my factory semi-tired FOMOCO specials in my 2008 Edge. Don't get me wrong, the 2008 edge 6X8's were pretty decent for a factory unit, but they were lacking quite a bit all around. I got on black Friday to check into Polk's DB specials as I have had great luck with the DB571s and DB651's. The adviser i spoke with mentioned that I might like the JBL's over the Polks. It is too early to confirm that, however out of the box the JBL GT's sound extremely clear and have a love to be played loud, even under factory head unit power. I won't short the Polk's as of yet as they have impressed me time and time again, but I will surely recommend these GT's to anyone wanting something more than factory blunder horns. . This was an excellent opportunity to try these and as they break in I will review more.

Pros: Work great under factory head unit power - love to get loud - no distortion. I can clearly hear detail from many genres and artists that I couldn't before. Awesome product for great price.

Cons: My door panels are now rattling more than before. I hear my poor recordings and low quality MPx files even more than before. I didn't get them sooner.

Good value for the money. Peyton's advise was on the money. I'm good with my hands but was nervous as I had never installed an audio system in any of my vehicles. Suffice it to say, the support you get from the folks at Crutchfield helped me save over $200 in installation fees at our local Ford dealership.

Cons: Would like a little more bass but if you want that, just add a subwoofer.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought these to replace factory speakers that were distorting when bass was turned up. New ones may be distorting worse. They do have more highs than OEM ones so that's a plus. disappointed that I can't turn up the volume without distortion. Maybe its the factory stereo. Will try changing that out at some point. but for now color me disappointed.

Pros: More high end

Cons: still getting distortion when I turn up the bass

Crutchfield response on October 19, 2015 That's a common reaction when replacing car speakers. What you can expect to hear from a new speaker is better clarity and definition in the mids and highs. So your music will sound better and more lifelike, but you might not hear more bass. The only way to get more bass is to add more power, and if you want to keep the factory radio, that means adding an amplifier. A small, 4-channel amp can supply twice the power of an aftermarket stereo and three or four times the power of the typical factory radio. That'll improve all the sound, but you'll especially hear it in the fullness of the bass.

good for the price

Written by: GordonD from Hawaii on October 12, 2015

With adequate power these are clean and pretty accurate. I'd like a bit more bass, but it has a sufficient amount to get the job done.

Pros: Price, crisp and clean.

Cons: A bit weak on the bass department

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought 4. Is pretty loud in my F350 with high power stereo. Could use more bass, but they fit direct and took about 3 minutes to install one. I installed a sub which was also my plan so it all works fine at that point. Wasn't that bad really but a sub makes it pretty noticable. I run 1x300 watts which is about low as anyone could go and a 8". Seems like a pretty good speaker for the most part.

Pros: Sensitivity. Nice looks. Stock speaker wire. It's the right size speaker.

Cons: Lacks some bass. Would work better with upgraded speaker wires. It is not a big speaker.

JBL > OEM "Sony" Speakers in Ford F150

2014 Ford F-150 FX4
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a 2014 F-150 FX4 with the "Sony" sound system. After only 10k miles, the passenger front speaker went out. Ford charged $45 per one single speaker, so I just got two sets of these JBL's to replace them, for less than "Sony" speakers. They are not high grade Sony stuff, so needless to say, the difference is extraordinary. I have been a JBL supporter for years, and these speakers keep that going strong. You can hear so much more of your music, and the lows are sweet for a non-component door speaker. A+

Pros: Super Clear Sound, Maintains rigidity of music, lightweight

Cons: That I didn't install these sooner.

Replaced the front speakers only on my Son's 06 Ranger along with the head unit, and we wanted to hear the difference between the factory speakers and the JBL's before we purchased the rears. Just did the compare and the JBL's sounded much more clear and precise, with more accurate bass than the factory speakers. We just ordered a second set for the rears, there is not a huge amount of bass but we were planning on installing a small sub anyways. Overall we would recommend these but as usual, what may sound great to me may not sound good to you! As always a great overall experience with Crutchfield.

Pros: Price, ease of install, clarity, build quality.

Cons: none at this time.

2001 Ford Expedition
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was hoping for more bass coverage and more obvious full range frequency response. These are just average. These are as good as the factory speakers, but no significant difference over factory speakers. If your OEM speakers are broken or worn out these are an excellent replacement. But if you are looking for an upgrade, and willing to spend more money, I'd recommend looking into more expensive options.

Pros: Fit and work fine

Cons: Not an upgrade. Just a replacement for OEM speakers.

Great upgrade

Written by: GT from Wisconsin on May 29, 2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

1998 Ford Taurus with stock radio and cassette player. Compared to the stock speakers (front and rear) these are a massive upgrade. Bass is distinct and punchy though a bit flat. But I wasn't expecting the bass to compare with a regular subwoofer. The tweeters perform wonderfully and the speakers, in general, are very good. The fronts install easily once you get the door trim panels off. I installed the front first, thinking they would be the hardest. Wrong. The rears are mounted from the top and the bottom bolts are hard to get at because of the deck placement. Still, a doable job. The rear speaker grills come out easily if you treat them as flexible. Pull on the top edge downward toward yourself then up toward the roof. The midrange and highs are very clear and none of the sound distorts even at high volume but then, I don't play stuff loud enough to shake the car. I like rich, clear sound and these are great at that. I'll be installing a subwoofer soon for the deep cabin filling bass and I'm sure I will have very acceptable and enjoyable sound. By the way, the sensitivity of these speakers is very good and I'm using them with only the stock radio and no external amplifier. The subwoofer will have it's own built in amp but these JBL's don't really need additional amplification unless you intend to entertain at a party or something.

Pros: Great upgrade

Cons: Can't think of any.

I have an 2011 F150 with the stock system. I replaced the junk speakers in the front door with a set of these. The JBL sound better in every way. Much clearer and low distortion when flat out.

Pros: Well built, clear sounding speaker for the cost.

Cons: None at this price point.

Decent for a 99' Taurus

1999 Ford Taurus
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these as a replacement for a blown driver's side front door speaker in my 1999 Taurus. I did have the Mach Audio setup, and these are comparable in quality. The installation was quick and relatively painless, and the speakers are a snug fit. They sound good and they handle higher volumes well, but they're also being underpowered by the stock amp and it shows. You start getting breakup long before one would expect given their wattage rating, but still above what most listeners will get to in their daily drive. The low end response isn't as tight as the Mach speakers were, and the frequency response isn't as good (45hz is not a bad low end at all for the size, though.) But I can still heartily recommend these as a replacement for either the Mach speakers or most definitely the stock speakers. I've compared these to a friend with the stock setup and they blow them a mile out of the water. You won't be disappointed.

Pros: Easy install, excellent packaging, powerful, accurate, and reasonably priced. Good looking, too.

Cons: Without an aftermarket amp these won't really shine as bright as they can, but they're still a great replacement for stock speakers.

These speakers are an Awesome upgrade over stock! The fit perfectly out of the box with very little effort. Unlike other speakers where you have to cut off tabs, the tabs on these are easily bent up out of the way. JBL has designed these tabs to easily bend by pre-stressing the tab with a bend line. The JBL GT7-86 sound crystal clear at full volume being pushed by the factory un-amplified unit. They can take everything that I can throw at them and not distort one bit! Me telling you this can not do this speaker justice... The best way for you to know is to listen to a pair already installed and your decision will be made for you! You'll be ordering a pair or two pair from Crutchfield before you can say go!

These JBLs were are a huge improvement over my '08 Ford Explorer's stock speakers. Installation was a breeze thanks to the MasterSheet. I ended up with these JBLs after going through my options with the Crutchfield chat - and could not be happier. I wasn't looking for a massive truck-rumbling sound, but now I keep thinking about upgrading my HU to get more out of these. Suppose the a bass could be stronger, but I'd rather add a sub for that. These speakers really shine when you turn the volume up a couple of notches.

These speakers are not the best, but they are a major upgrade to the ones i had before in my ford taurus 1998. I was looking fir some speakers for not too much of a price these ended up costing $120 because of the sale they had them on, buy one get one half off, they came with everything except the tools neccesary to put them in, they took me all off an hour and a half to put in properly, and i put them in the side doors andin the back. Now i have had them for around 3 months they are still working, they put out decent sound, i like them but they are definetly not the best i have heard, but i am quite picky. They are good on base and good on tone, they are well rounded as i would put it. Even though i am playing music through the default cassette player that is in my for tuarus with a monster cassete to aux cable it puts out decent sound so i am satisfied, they could be a little cheaper, but they arent too bad they shake my car at even low ish volumes not sure what you wanted to hear but here is what i have to say about these speakers.

Not as loud as stock but very very crisp sound. Decent highs, above normal lows, and a bass that can be felt. Overall a good product.

Pros: Crisp clear sounds.

Cons: Not as loud as stock. Turn the volume up 3-5 points more to get same loudness as stock.

2012 Ford F-150 Lariat
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Quick and easy swap with factory speakers. Sound great only problem is now I need a sub to compensate for the extra trebles. Speakers are very responsive at low to medium volumes. As volume increases highs really pick up and take over the soundstage.

Pros: Look great, easy install in 2012 F150

Cons: Have pillar tweeters so the really adds to the highs.

Great sound even w/o an amplifier

2005 Ford Five Hundred
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had it all - a new Kenwood head unit with bluetooth, a Spotify subscription that turns my smartphone into an endless jukebox of great music, and blown speakers. Well now, that's not going to work! Problem is, most 5x7/6x8 speakers won't fit in a Ford Five Hundred's front doors without some kind of hackery, thanks to an unfortunate placement of a tie down for the wiring harness. These JBL's were easy to install, thanks to Crutchfield's clear instructions and included wiring adapters. Once installed, the JBL's sound clean and crisp, with enough volume to risk a noise violation, this without anything more than the Kenwood's internal amplifier. In short, it's an upgrade I should have done two years ago when I bought the car. It has a nice, tight bass response, but there's only so much you're going to get with 6x8's in the doors.

Pros: Enough volume to irritate neighbors and law enforcement Crisp, clear sound and tight bass Actually fits in the front doors of a Ford Five Hundred

Cons: If you want serious bass, get an amp and a subwoofer.

Features

Plus One Woofer Cones: The Plus One speaker cones offer more surface area than other speakers that fit in the same size opening. This is accomplished by using a new basket design and hi-roll surround. The result is greater bass output and an increase in efficiency.

Balanced Dome Tweeter: Each speaker has a PEI (Poly-Ether-Imide) balanced dome tweeter. PEI is a polymer film, capable of producing a wide soundstage. A semi-dome tweeter has a dome placed inside a cone. Balanced dome tweeters are semi-dome tweeters with equal reproduction area given the cone and dome portions of the tweeter.

Mounting Applications: JBL describes this speaker as a 5x7/6x8; it fits many 5x7 and 6x8 applications. Please check the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector to confirm fit.
