JBL GT7-96

Our take on the JBL GT7-96

These GT7-96 6"x9" speakers from JBL have everything you want when shopping for a car speaker: an advanced design, quality materials, a cool look, and a practical price tag. But in the end, it's the sound they make that matters, and true to their iconic heritage, these JBLs deliver.

GT7-96 profile

The compact design of the GT7-96 makes it a fit for a wide variety of cars.

A cool upgrade

These GT7-96 6"x9" speakers from JBL have everything you want when shopping for a car speaker: an advanced design, quality materials, a cool look, and a practical price tag. But in the end, it's the sound they make that matters, and true to their iconic heritage, these JBLs deliver.

How do they do it?

This is a whopper of a speaker. Patented Plus One™ architecture expands the surface area of the big oval polypropylene woofer, so you'll enjoy impressive bass. An edge-driven dome tweeter and supertweeter handle a wider range of frequencies to create a seamless transition between the midrange and high frequencies.

JBL built these GT7 speakers to handle up to 70 watts RMS, so they'll perform spectacularly with an aftermarket radio or amp, but with a design geared toward maximum efficiency, you'll get superior performance even from a factory radio. Grilles are included for a custom installation.

Jbl speakers sound great but the wiring connection adapters that were sent did not work well and had to crimp on stake on connectors to make it work.

Jbl speakers sound great but the wiring connection adapters that were sent did not work well and had to crimp on stake on connectors to make it work.

Pros: Speakers mounted well into existing holes and the sound good.

Cons: The connector kits did not work with the existing car connectors.

Perfect fit for 2015 RAM 1500. Guide says it will not fit but it does. Great full sound. Put in front doors. Much fuller sound than the 6.5's that are recommended. Highly recommend.

Pros: Full rich sound.

Cons: Foam surrounds.

Night and day!

Written by: Anonymous from Fort Washington, MD on July 8, 2016

2008 Dodge Magnum

Compared to the factory speakers it night and day. The high end is so much more defined and clear. Now at the time i am not running them off of an amp, just direct to an aftermarket head unit. And they sound just fine... The price was also a bonus, defiantly got my monies worth.

Pros: plug and play low cost solid sound

Needed better sound in the rear deck

2013 Chrysler 200
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound in my chrysler 200 with boston accoustic speakers was a disappointment in the rear deck. I bought the JBL's and installed them. As usual Crutchfield came through again. Better sound and enjoyment with my music. The boston's that came from the rear were cheap wizzer cone speakers. I figured they would at least put 2-ways in for the money.

Pros: better quality and sound. It is a pleasure ordering from a faithful company like Crutchfield.

Cons: none.

2015 Toyota Tacoma
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed these in my Tacoma in very little time. The kit from Crutchfield was excellent, but a few modifications were required to the adapter. The sound came to life after installing these up front, and the GT7-6 in the rear. I have not added an amp yet, but the improvement is worth just the speakers. Can't beat the price for the two sets! This is my third vehicle that I upgraded with Crutchfield components based on their recommendations, and these guys know music! Thanks a million Crutchfield!

Pros: Easy install with few tweaks. Great sound for the price!!

Cons: None really. Just a bit of time to think things over before doing the install goes a long way!

These speakers made the quality of sound go from sub par to superb! All while still using my factory head unit. I wish there was more bass, but with that being said I would just have to get a subwoofer! ;). With these speakers it literally sounds like I have surround sound in my car!

Pros: Crystal clear sound, deeper bass and broader range of sound

Cons: Not enough bass

Excellent upgrade to replace factory speakers

Written by: Sheri from Savannah, GA on April 4, 2016

2011 Nissan Sentra
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed these as factory rear deck replacements, wish I'd done it sooner! I replaced the head unit about a year ago (also bought from Crutchfield, these guys rock!) which made a little difference in the overall sound. These speakers totally made the difference. I mainly listen to electro and hip hop, so decent bass and crisp highs are a must for me. These speakers deliver a great range, nice bass, and no distortion. Disassembling my rear deck was simple up until the last few steps but I managed to figure it out. The speakers were supposed to drop into place with no additional bracket but this wasn't the case. I ended up having to carefully use a drill to widen a couple holes on the speakers in order to fasten them down (which was a little nerve wracking). Putting the trim pieces back in was also a little frustrating, but I got it all back together and the speakers sound amazing, especially considering that I don't have a separate amp or sub.

Pros: Nice & rich bass, good range and highs, no distortion, excellent price.

Cons: Did not fit like expected, had to modify the speakers in order to fasten securely.

Great overall speakers and you get what you pay for! Great sound at a great price and I am running these with Polk DXi651s. All of them are being powered with a clarion xc1410 4 channel amp! The speakers match up well and everything works great! The highs are smooth and distinctive coming from these JBLs. The mids are great too. The lows and miss bass are pronounced and even sounding. I'm pushing 50 watts to them and they take it well!

Pros: Great Bass! Great highs! Decent mid bass!

Cons: Foam Surrounds Basket is kind of sketchy

Great quick response from Hi's to Low's on these speakers. They fit in just fine with my 2010 4Runner, the install took just a few minutes to get both doors completed. For a 3way speaker I anticipated that the bass would be overpowered by the mids/highs but you really do get the full spectrum with these JBLs.

Pros: Price Overall Sound Quality Great Lows, incredible Highs - at all volumes

Cons: None!

These speakers are a great upgrade from the factory oem in a 2009 Tacoma. Great high-end with the existing factory tweeters and much fuller bass compared to the Tacoma oem's. High value for the cost and installation was straight forward with the Crutchfield supplied mounting and wiring adaptors.

Pros: Much fuller sound and improved bass. Used with a Jensen nav receiver, the equalizer allows a custom sound profile for talk radio and for music.

Cons: No cons

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have these running at 65w RMS each off the front pair of a 5 channel class D amp and these things kick. The midrange in these speakers is decent but overpowered by the bass they produce. All in all I think they sound really good if you have an EQ and can bump the mid range and treble up a bit. I turned these speakers into monsters after playing with settings.

Pros: Sound good, more bass than 6.5" speakers.

Cons: None so far.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Really good sounds coming from these JBL's, good range, I hear crisp definition between the high notes, low notes and mid range. I'm hearing sounds in songs that I've been listening to for years for the first time. I have to say I'm pretty darn happy, especially for the price. When doing my install; it seemed I was dealing with a quality product, nice fit and finish. I presume I'll be getting years of satisfaction from these speakers. I only give them a four star rating because I still want more volume, I have a feeling the only way I'll get enough volume for my liking is if I invest big bucks on big power. After all I'm only driving them with a $130 Kenwood deck, in a Corolla, so I'm thrilled

Pros: clear crisp sounds

Cons: none really, they rock

I am always amazed when I pull out factory car speakers (this is my 3rd car and Crutchfield speaker upgrade) and see how cheap they are - it's amazing they play music at all. Anyway, these JBL's are wonderful. When you unbox them, you immediately can see what high quality they are and solidly they are built. Easy to install using the door adapters. And the sound is super crisp. WELL worth the cost and effort. You won't be disappointed!

Pros: Great sound, solid construction

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I tried to install these in a 2015 Subaru Outback. Crutchfield did not have a MasterSheet and included no instructions. I was able to find some information on the Internet. The supplied bracket required some modifications. Only two of the existing bracket holes would line up with the speaker frame holes and required drilling two new holes so screws could be inserted at all four points. I removed the door panels but could not uncouple two of the couplings. I ended up taking the speakers somewhere to be installed. As to sound I would just say ok. I thought the bass is boomy and not very tight. I don't know that I would purchase these again. If I had it to do over again I would just go to a stereo shop.

Pros: Ok sound

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased these speakers based on other customer reviews stating that they had very good bass. After installation (with Pioneer MVH-X370BT), the highs and mids sound great, but does lack a deep thumping bass. The bass is there but sounds a bit flat. If you listen to music with a lot of bass, I would not recommend these speakers unless you have a sub. Overall, I am happy with the speakers, but if I had to do it again, I would purchase a different set of 6x9.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed these speakers in my 2013 Toyota Prius III. The standard speakers are horrible as far as build quality. The magnet is glued to the back and is about 3 times smaller than anything I've seen. The sound was just OK but a little muddy. The JBL speakers made a world of difference but they didn't have much to prove against the stock speakers. The bass is solid and the midrange and high range are crisp and clear. If you have the standard paper speakers in your Toyota, you can't go wrong with these. I have yet to install the rear 6.6" JBL's but I'm sure the sound will be even better. Thanks to Crutchfield for providing the accessories and instructions to make the install easy.

Plus One Woofer Cones: The Plus One speaker cones offer more surface area than other speakers that fit in the same size opening. This is accomplished by using a new basket design and hi-roll surround. The result is greater bass output and an increase in efficiency.

Tweeters: Each speaker has an edge-driven dome tweeter and dome super tweeter, both made of PEI (Poly-Ether-Imide). PEI is a polymer film, capable of producing a wide soundstage.
