About the JBL S2-1024SS

Bob Bihlmayer

No storm in this port

The Series II subwoofers were a big hit, so now JBL brings you their Series II bass enclosures, the perfect marriage of subwoofer performance and box design. The S2-1024SS enclosure comes loaded with JBL's S2-1024 10" subwoofer, which features a polypropylene cone and nitrile rubber surround made to stand up to life in an automobile. JBL's patented Slipstream port uses a double-flared design to cut port noise and distortion by reducing turbulence. Less turbulence, more boom. This port allows JBL to design a smaller enclosure without sacrificing impact.

Switchable impedance

The sub also features JBL's Selectable Smart Impedance, which allows you to switch between 2-ohm and 4-ohm impedance to optimize the speaker to your system. This capability also allows you to start your system with a single Series II enclosure, then add another one later without having to replace your bass amp.

To drive this single subwoofer, we recommend a mono amplifier rated between 200 and 375 watts RMS at 2 ohms. For more information, please refer to our article on How to Match Subwoofers and Amplifiers.

Features

Selectable Smart Impedance (SSI): A switch on the input terminal allows you to easily change the woofer's impedance between 2Ω and 4Ω settings. (The connected amplifier should be off when changing the impedance.)

Slipstream Port: The JBL S2-1024SS has a Slipstream port on the front of the enclosure. The double-flared shape of the oversized port is precisely calculated to efficiently eliminate port noise. Even at high SPL, airflow through the port will remain uniform, offering better low-frequency extension and woofer protection. Because the area of the port in the middle is smaller than the mouth of the port, the port can be much shorter than a cylindrical port with a surface area the same as the Slipstream port's mouth; this means it can fit into smaller boxes.

Binding Post: The wire terminal, on the right side of the enclosure, features a pair of binding posts that will accept single banana plugs, pin connectors, spade lugs, and bare wire up to 10-gauge.

Thanks for your question. For information on selecting the best amp for your subs I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences between the amp models and help you make the best choice for your system.

Q
is the enclosure at least 3/4 inch mdf and internally braced? I researched the JBL website but could not find the answer.

JBL has not published that information and we haven't dismantled one ourselves to confirm. You can contact JBL directly as they may be able to confirm the thickness of the MDF and internal bracing. You can reach them directly by dialing 800.336.4525 I hope that helps! My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=5
