If you pay attention to the world of movies, you know that great theater sound and the JBL nameplate have gone together for a very long time. And while your TV room doesn't present the same challenges as the local multiplex, it can feature floor-shaking realism and crystal clear dialogue when you add the Cinema SB400 sound bar/wireless subwoofer system.
The JBL Cinema SB400 sound bar has front panel controls in addition to a handy remote
The Cinema SB400 starts with a total of 220 system watts — 100 of those reserved for the wireless subwoofer. In combination with JBL's Display Surround processing, this power generates an enveloping surround-like sweet spot that will draw you into the action on-screen. And that sound can come from several sources. The Cinema SB400 has three HDMI inputs, so you can connect Blu-ray players, streaming video players like an Apple® TV, or cable/satellite boxes, and use the sound bar's circuitry to select your program source. An optical digital input allows you to connect TVs that don't feature the latest HDMI connections with 2-way audio capabilities, and an analog stereo minijack gives you even more flexibility in accommodating other sound sources.
And that's not the whole story when it comes to inputs. Built-in Bluetooth® circuitry will receive signals from your smartphone, tablet, or other compatible streaming devices, so you can fill your viewing room with the music that's available at your fingertips. Be your own DJ from anywhere within range. The system includes all the cables you'll need to get up and running right away, and if you choose to set it up in tabletop mode, it'll take just minutes to set up. All the necessary hardware for wall mounting the Cinema SB400 is included in the box.
Add big sound to your TV without a roomful of speakers. Sound bars require minimal space and wiring, and their sleek designs complement today's flat-panel TVs. Most sound bars have their own built-in amplification, so you won't need to use a home theater receiver. Some models use advanced surround processing and carefully aimed speaker drivers to simulate the effects of a full home theater audio system.
if you are looking for a soundbar , look no farther! The JBL-SB400 is incredible ! the sound is great & so is the power ! i put the wireless Bass box over in the corner & this is the most awesome part ! IT has 100 watts of it's own & i had that thing BUMPIN' ! IT was dancin' with itself ! i love this unit !
Pros: everything about it is positive ! IT far exceeded any expectation !
Cons: There are no negatives , as far as i can tell !
All I can say is wow! This sound bar/sub exceeded my expectations. From watching TV off the dish, my Playstation, or Blue Ray: this thing has my house rumbling. You get what you pay for!
Pros: Damn near everything so far.
Cons: Just wish the remote was bigger and it had a Bluetooth button on it. Feel like I'm going to lose the thing.
Excellent multiple and varied connections ! Awesome sound !
Cons: No Bluetooth remote button.
Crutchfield staff helped me return another soundbar that did not have the same level of dialogue clarity as the JBL SB400. The exchange was seamless and I am much happier with the overall performance of this soundbar. It is a good alternative to a full-blown setup with a home theater receiver and much easier to setup and enjoy. Music is great, dialogue is good, Bluetooth connectivity is a great feature.
Pros: crisp and clear dialogue with adjustable wireless subwoofer great sound from music through Bluetooth simple setup with multiple HDMI connections
Cons: none so far
All around great purchase. Great sound. NFL week 1 here we come!!
Sound quality is excellent and all volumes. The subwoofer performs flawlessly with all types of music . The only downside is that the remote does not have a dedicated bluetooth input button so you actually have to go to the soundbar to select that input when you want to hear from a bluetooth source.
Pros: Loud and clear! Deep bass!
Cons: No dedicated bluetooth input button on the remote forcing the user to have to approach the soundbar to select that input.
Sound bar is smooth to the ears and the sub is strong. No issues with set up or with the wireless Bluetooth. Play several movies and mix in some music from the good old CD player too adjust the crossover between the bar and sub-really happy with this purchase! Great service from Crutchfield!
Pros: Easy set up, product quality and ease of use
Picked this up to replace an aging surround sound system with no digital connections. Very easy to hook up. Love the extra HDMI ports which also factored into my decision to purchase this unit over a couple others in the same price range. Use this to watch TV and movies with a cable box and Blue Ray player. Works perfectly and sounds great, This wont replace a full fledged system for music listening but excellent for what I needed it for. Voice is clear and the sound quality is excellent anywhere in the room and the sub woofer is fully adjustable. Other reviewers complained about the tiny remote(which it is) but I was able to program my master remote to turn the JBL unit off, on and adjust sound levels up and down so no worries. Only complaint is that the HDMI connections point strait up and the cables need to be bent a little to use the unit on a tabletop but I was able to do that. Seems to me a better design would be to have the cables plug in from the sides. Good looking unit that will add class to any system.
Pros: Easy to hook up, 3 HDMI connections and one with ARC, sounds great.
Cons: HDMI cables come strait down out of the bar.
This product is really great!
Pros: It has tons of power and is really user friendly.
Cons: The Bluetooth tends to cut out if you get to far from the soundbar.
Excellent sound quality. Great Bass and very easy to pair wireless devices. Highly recommended!
Love my JBL SB400 sound bar.
Pros: Easy to connect and use. Excellent sound quality. Much better bass than the Visio it replaced.
Cons: Wish the power on light was in a better location so it could be seen from across the room.
Sounds great and when the bass kicks in pure enjoyment. Set up was simple.
Great sound and solid subwoofer! There are a few detractors however. Like previously stated no Bluetooth button on the remote. That's not terrible just an inconvenience. The wall mount is a bit flimsy but it should work. Lastly, and the most frustrating is that at times you have to re-hit the optical button to get the sound to work even though the optical button is already selected. Overall the sound bar sounds great for the price so in the end the sound quality outweighs the minor issues.
Great sound from another great product by JBL. I noticed the sound is maybe a half second behind the TV action. Not sure why since the signal goes through soundbar to the TV. Maybe connected incorrectly but no matter... it's a major improvement over the Samsung I returned.
This sound bar was not for me. Had 4 real issues that forced me to return it. #1 hdmi cables stick past the feet, so this is not a table top sound bar. #2 loud popping and cracking sounds while watching blu Ray movies. #3 not compatible with directv remote. #4 sound never synced up with video. Voices were about a second in front of people moving there mouths. Maybe I just had a defective one, but at for the price you shouldn't have issues.
Live in an older home where a full home theater system just does not work. Have had 0 issues. Great sound. Harmon surround mode and extra base make a lot of difference when watching movies. Sub is more than sufficient. If you buy a mid level system it should be this one.
The JBL has good strong bass which you can always control the desired amount. Vocals on the other hand is weak. Would have been better if there is a setting for clear voice when you just want to hear more vocals in shows. The surround modes doesn't do much to help boost vocals. It only creates the sound making it seems like it's coming from the front of the sound bar or around it. Other sound bars I've read seems to have a "clear voice" setting. Even my samsung LED tv has a clear voice setting that works really well. Overall, it's a good solid built system.
Pros: Good bass
Cons: Vocals not as clear
So far so good. I was at a local shop to listen to a Sony setup that was about $100 less, and I stumbled upon this one. I listened to the Sony at first, and I thought the subwoofer was turned off. Turns out, it was working... just not very well. So I'm fumbling through the available Bluetooth connections and I selected the SB400. I hit play, and the JBL roared. I actually laughed out loud at how the bass rattled the shelves all the sound bars were on.
So I buy one, and get it home. Within the minutes I had the speaker bar hooked up with the supplied Optical cable, and paired up the sub. I don't have an HDMI ARC output since my Bravia is about 7 years old. We tested the TV output for a while which, was was great... then we played music via Bluetooth. The bar was clear, and the bass was rattling our medicine cabinet in a room upstairs on the other side of the house.
For the price, it's a great speaker setup. If you live in an apartment, you're going to tick off your neighbors though. :)
Pros: Great bass. Great sound. Easy to connect.
Cons: Seriously JBL... add a Bluetooth button to the remote so everyone will stop complaining.
This soundbar has been great, good lows and clean voices even during loud movie scenes. If you are not wall mounting this bar I would suggest either right angle HDMI cables or ones with a braided cover on the cord portion to give them more flexibility. There is not a lot of space and the HDMI ports face downwards.
Pros: Great Sound, Great Look, Great Low End
Cons: Do not cut off the power to the subwoofer if you have a wireless device near it, just use the subwoofer off option on the remote. Maybe there is another factor I couldn't figure out but when I had the sub powered off I lost 40% of my wireless connectivity on my blu ray player, causing streaming video dropouts. When it is plugged in I have full connectivity. Maybe the bluetooth keeps hopping around the 2.4 Ghz band and can't pair up, causing interference? Not sure, I just know what works for m
This JBL Bluetooth Soundbar is amazing. Much more than we expected. Fills the whole house with awesome bass, clarity, just overall amazing. Sounds like you are at a concert when you have music playing. Crutchfield did an awesome job with getting it to us in a timely manner. You guys are the best!
Pros: Clarity, deep bass, easy to hook up.
Cons: None found.
I had originally purchased the Sony CT660 based on the lower cost and good reviews, but returned it after only a few days of sampling it, the sound quality just wasn't there. Within minutes of listening to the JBL i was clear why it's worth the extra money. There are probably other systems as good or better at this higher price point however i couldn't find any that had HDMI in/out which is what i needed for my setup. The sound quality and build quality are outstanding on this system. Clear, full, evenly balanced sound with no fuss. There are no real adjustment settings on this system, a music mode and movie mode... most of the time the difference between them is imperceptible, move is intended to have a slightly wider sound stage to simulate surround. It sounds great on either though and i tend to leave it on music. The bass boost tends to over-drive it too much, but once you set the cut-off and level on the sub itself you'll never need to mess with it again. None of these sound bar systems are going to replace real speakers with large drivers and proper spacing in your room, but for everyday use for TV and bluetooth music this system is perfect. There is also a Harmon Kardon speaker system at this same price point that is identical and would also be recommended.
Pros: Sound quality and build quality. Bluetooth works great.
Cons: Odd that switching to bluetooth is not on the remote (as others have noted).
The year is 2014 where you sit on The lounge pull up your phone, tablet etc and play! Not with The jbl!!!you get up and go to The unit and continue to push input till your on bluetooth! And go back to where you were with your remote that must of cost jbl all of 23 cents! They need to have a optional remote that fixes this problem.
Pros: Good bass and overall sound quaiity
Cons: Sorry how do you release a product with bluetooth and Not have it on The remote! Useless! I should have kept my money just like my 30 year old speakers i had, that effectivly operate The same? The remote is total junk!
Great soundbar! The best sounding bar. Very easy to set up.
Pros: Easy setup. Great sound. Looks good. Wireless sub.
Cons: Would like it to be cheaper.
Can't get sound to play through sound bar using HDMI ARC. Tech support where I purchased this said it was a bad arc port but I exchanged it and still can't get it to work. Could it be another bad arc port? The retail place where I bought this gave me trouble when returning the first so I'm just going to deal with it. Really could be the TV but I've sat through there tech support and they say it's the sound bar. Who knows. I regret buying it.
The base literally shakes your heart and the sound is so clear ...might i say it's stylish and super easy to install! All around great sound!
Pros: Great bass clear precise sound amazingly easy to install
Cons: Very pricey
Other than my TV, this is the best investment I've made. It makes sound come alive. Everyone should have a JBL sound bar! I'm a happy customer.
Great Product, Great Value & Great Service
I previously had purchased the Klipsch HD Theater SB3 and ended up having multiple issues with it. After returning the Klipsch I talked to the Crutchfield "experts" and they recommended the JBL. I have never owned jbl products but thought I may as well give it a shot. Not only was the soundbar cheaper, but it sounded just as good as the Klipsch when the klipsch functioned properly. It also has Bluetooth capabilities and hdmi connections which were nice. Overall I am very pleased with the unit as it sounds great and was affordable at the same time offering more in connections and capability.
Pros: Great sound even at overly loud levels. Easy connections w ARC hdmi option. Great value for performance.
Cons: Hdmi connections are oddly positioned making it difficult for thicker cables.
This thing sounds great. Very pleased with the sound with music and movies. Reading other reviews I didn't think much of the Bluetooth not something you could switch from the remote but do admit it is disappointing that you can't switch to Bluetooth. I didn't see any other reviews that mentioned it can't be controlled by a DirecTV remote, so if this is a deal breaker for you, let it be known you can't control the sound bar with you DirecTV remote. I bought this for a couple reasons, the reviews it received were mainly positive and I have an old plasma TV that only has 1 HDMI input and no outputs of any kind. So my plan was to use this to switch between my DVR and Blu-ray player but had some issues getting it all to work; it has worked itself out and is working good now. Bottom line is this thing sounds great and works well. I listen to all types of music and have to say the at response from the sub is very impressive.
Pros: Looks and sounds great. Bass level can be adjusted.
Cons: Can't be programmed to work with a DirecTV remote.
Good sound. Its not a receiver amp and 7.1 separate speaker system, but its a whole lot better than the TV alone. The sub Woofer is a must, I forgot how it ads to the scare factory in horror movies.
Pros: Size alone. If your buying a sound bar for its sound quality you will be disappointed.
Cons: The one cable system to TV system... Had to install the whole system twice. My cables were to short as a result. Do not expect to run the one cable to just the tv. and stereo, bluray and cable box to the sound bar... doesn't work, all kinds of problems.
Very please with the SB400. Easy to install, hook up, and start-up. Sound quality is great with very strong bass that can be controlled.
Pros: Looks good. Great sound quality. Solid, deep bass.
Cons: None. Concerned a young grandchild might put a small toy or other item into the port on the subwoofer.
We opted for this system since we have a big open space with tall ceiling and not a lot of options for rear or side mounted speakers. We've had it a month and love it so far. The sub is easy to control and can crank up the bass effects for movies and down for regular TV if you want. The guys at the Harrisonburg store did a great job as usual so recommend coming in person if you can!
Pros: Easy set up, and great sound for movies, nice to have the 4 options for HDMI imputs
Cons: Only two "equalizer" type settings for movie and music. really small remote control (my universal remote will only operate the volume, so I have to use the remote or on the speaker to turn it off)
Initially I was very unhappy with JBL's SB400. My set-up is DirecTV HD/DVR receiver and ROKU to Soundbar via HDMI and HDMI Output to Samsung LCD TV. The problem was occasional loud "pops" that were unpredictable but frequent enough to make it unlistenable. It even drove my dog out of the room. I searched online for the problem and found others complaining of same issue, but no solutions. I was on the verge of sending the unit back, but I decided to change the connections. I unhooked all of the HDMI connections from the Soundbar, and routed DirecTV Receiver and Roku into LCD TV (via HDMI), then used the supplied Digital Optical Cable to connect the TV output to the Soundbar Input. PROBLEM SOLVED! No more popping and I have good quality sound. I don't know the cause of the problem, but am relieved to have figured out a workable solution.
Purchased this product as a gift for the whole family. They were not disappointed! The quality of the sound bar is amazing. Throw in the subwoofer and the system does a excellent job for the cost. It may not be able to replace the sound quality of a receiver and multiple speakers but it is a great compromise If you are looking for a wireless system for a smaller media room or you are on a buget.
Pros: Bluetooth capable- play music from your iPhone right through the system.
Cons: Can't think of any.
A very attractive installation and generally great sound. However, I'm a little disappointed with its treble response. As I age, my high frequency hearing is diminishing. Consequently, I need additional treble to clearly understand the spoken word. I've not been able to adjust the treble level high enough. The bass can blast us out of the room but, I'd trade some of that bass response for more treble.
Pros: Great bass effects and generally good sound
Cons: Treble level can not be adjusted high enough to satisfy me.
This product was recommended to me by Crutchfield. What can I say, they were spot one! The soundbar ROCKS! It sounds great with the TV and also when streaming music with the Blue Tooth feature. I am very satisfied with this purchase! Thanks again for the help and great service Crutchfield!
Pros: Great Sound, Blue Tooth feature, looks good, easy to set up
It now sounds as if we are in a theater instead of our living room. The difference is amazing. Setup was easy. Dialogue is now more pronounced. This JBL serves our needs without the cost and clutter of a large home entertainment system.
Pros: Great sound. Easy setup. High quality at a good price.
The system sounds good, not great, in my opinion. The power switch is supposed to come on automatically when an HDMI input is activated, but doesn't on my unit. Also, the remote is incredibly flimsy and cheesy, and the volume control is erratic. Would be nice to have a power indicator light on the front rather than the top of the unit, so you could see it while sitting down. Also, the HDMI ports are facing downward, so I had to buy two new HDMI cables that were more flexible at the connector so they could make the bend coming out of the ports.
Pros: Decent sound---lots of volume
Cons: Poor controls, design, and remote
I purchased this sound bar to replace an old "home theater system in a box." I wanted better sound quality and I liked the ability to route my Apple TV, DVR and DVD player through the bar with one HDMI to the TV. Set up was simple. However, the HDMI cables connect to inputs that point down. For table top installation, clearance makes bulky cables awkward. If you buy this sound bar and don't already have HDMI cables, buy cables with a hinge or buy a hinge adapter to account for this problem The unit, when allowed to go into standby mode on it's own, is supposed to power on automatically when the you turn on any sound input (DVR, DVD or Apple TV). However, this feature did not work. Crutchfield technical support has been very helpful and will try to resolve this issue. I will buy from Crutchfield again because they stand behind their products. I am very happy with the sound quality. It is superb.
Pros: Good looking, easy set up, sound quality
Cons: Poor placement of HDMI cable inputs, auto power-on feature not working.
This sound bar is certainly an improvement over my Sony TV's speakers. At first, I could not get my cable remote to control the volume nor could I get the on-screen display to work. A 10 minute call to Crutchfield Support resolved both issues. Turns out that I was misreading the setup instructions.
My initial setup had the sub positions behind the seating area in the room. This configuration to not provide very good sound and left me wondering if I was going to send the unit back. I moved the sub along side of the TV stand and sound bar and that greatly improved the sound. This made the unit a keeper in my eyes.
Pros: Good looks Synching the sub was a snap Sounds great Bluetooth allows me to stream music from my phone or tablet
Cons: Setup directions too vague and not descriptive enough More functionality from the remote
I have had the JBL SB400 installed for around a month now. Overall I am very pleased with this product. The sound quality from this system exceeded my expectations. I have the soundbar installed in a rather large room (18'x35') and I was concerned the small system would not fill the room. Although the sound output from the system is not overwhelming, it is a fantastic improvement over the tv output. I plan to buy another SB400 for a smaller TV room in by basement. If I had one complaint, it would be the soundbar does not automatically power up when it recieves an audio/video signal from the TV as indicated in the manual.
Pros: Easy set-up, great sound quality for a small system.
Cons: No automatic power up when the TV is turned on...must use the JBL remote.
JBL dropped the ball on what could have been a fantastic sound bar. Every aspect of this bar is great except for 2 details.
THE GOOD:The sound quality, the connectivity, ease of use and styling are all 5 stars.
THE BAD: If you are mounting system consists of tabs on the wall brackets and slots on the bar which is fine for wall mounting. However, if you are mounting the bar beneath a TV attatched to a full motion wall mount you must take care not to bump the bar it will fall off of the mount.
THE UGLY: The BlueTooth is where JBL dropped the ball. There is no way to select BlueTooth from the remote, you must select this input on the sound bar. To further compound the problem, without the ability to select BlueTooth as an input from the remote, you cannot add this function to a smart remote. This is a - 3 star oversight by JBL
Pros: Great sound, flexible and easy setup
Cons: No remote selection of BlueTooth
Good electronics, nice looking product, but a bit too bass heavy, not good enough voice clarity for tv sound with heavy effects.
Pros: Simple to setup, nice looking, strong and deep sound.
Cons: Not as good as others with dialogue.
Very good sounding sound bar and sub. Very easy to set up. HDMI ARC does not work, but is likely the fault of my tv.
The soundbar was easy to set up and use. Bluetooth configured easily. Sound quality is surprisingly good.
Pros: Good sound with wireless sub.
Cons: More functionality on remote would be nice but not imperative.
Great JBL sound as expected especially the base unit. I connected this speakers to Apple TV, LG flat screen, ipad, ipod, iphone, iMac to watch internet movies and to listen youtube and itune music. My iphone bluetooth has weak signal , so need to be in closer vicinity to JBL unit. no clutter in room as had with my old Sony 100wx5. Midrange is not as punching as Mackie SRM 450 ( I think it is 300-400 W per channel; apple to orange comparison I know) house speakers for my recording studio/band, but more than loud enough for the large room , 35'x35' high ceiling room when placed at the corner with base unit in the back of the room . never have to turn up the volume all the way. using as 2 channel sound only.
Pros: bluetooth function. auto turn off. RF base unit. very nice base. no distortion at high volume. small size. Excellent Crutchfield service , package, delivery ; impressed. nice and clear voice and high frequency. no need for Eq, Good price.
Cons: letters on the body and remote is too small and faint. need to make it bigger, brighter, even better if back lit. consider customers who use reading glasses. I have no problem using imac remote that is as small as JBL one. I have lighted LED magnifier near the unit to see any buttons on the main unit. . It will be nice if JBL produce matching side and rear speakers connected thru RF on free stands . I will be the first one to purchase them to make real surround sound system.
I was skeptical about this product at first. Once I completed running HDMI's and easily set up Bluetooth to my iPhone, I was blown away by the sound quality. I didn't expect this product to kill my older Bose cube set up. For under 600 bucks this sound bar delivers exceptional sound. BluRay movies are cinema quality sound.
Pros: Adapts to current remote! Sound- movies and steaming music are superb! Easy set up Design is classic and modern.
Cons: When you're steaming music, you can't watch TV. Only drawback, but I hardly watch TV while playing tunes.
Enjoying the sound of the JBL Cinema SB 400 ... only draw back so far is blue tooth signal appears to be intermittent when using my Mini I-pad ... not sure which component is having difficulty ... could be the SB 400, the I-pad, or both ...
Pros: Great sound ...
Cons: Possible problems with blue tooth technology
I did my research on this product and was not disappointed when I powered-up for the first time. The SB 400 has all the bells and whistles (Bluetooth, wireless sub, multiple HDMI,on-screen remote settings, bass-boost) and is a very easy install, especially if you are running HDMI. All of your HDMI components plug directly into the soundbar and one HDMI out goes to your TV. Plug in your the power cords for both the soundbar and powered subwoofer, synch the two, and you are done!! It's that easy. Note: I did not use the wall-mount bracket option, so I cannot comment on that aspect. The sound is amazing for what it is. The sub woofer sounds great and has adjustable settings for the amount of bass and a crossover setting as well, for fine-tuning to your ears. You may want to experiment placing the sub in different locations of the room, as this really does affect the performance. The remote is very basic and minimalistic, but it does allow you to control all of the settings you need (volume, source, mute, power, bluetooth, bass-boost, etc.), so no points deducted for that. I did read a lot about the HDMI connectors pointing down, but it's really not an issue. I have 3 HDMI's going in and 1 going out and it sits flat and level on my media cabinet. I'm sure it depends on the type of HDMI you are running, as some are really stiff at the connector. All in all, I am very happy with this system and will recommend to anyone who is in the market. Good Luck!
Pros: -Bluetooth -Easy Installation -Reasonably Priced
Cons: -None yet...
Great sound bar easy to install and operate
Pros: hdmi connections and bluetooth function
Cons: non yet
I got the SB 400 to replace another brand device for which I had been unable to get remote control to work dependably. The JBL unit has, so far, performed flawlessly. Sound quality is excellent, with the 8 inch wireless subwoofer providing good bass support but not overwhelming. (Sorry, but I do not agree that bass levels which perform internal organ massage are acceptable.) I use a programmable remote and the JBL unit has integrated nicely. Installation was very easy.
Pros: Easy to install, very good sound quality.
Cons: Connectors, especially HDMI point down. For table top installation, clearance makes bulky cables awkward.
JBL comes through with a fine product again. The price was a little high I thought but once installed I felt satisfied with my purchase.
Pros: Ease of setup
Cons: Price could be a bit lower
Very easy set up. Bluetooth connects easily to my iPad. Sound quality is excellent, just what I would expect from JBL. Still waiting for my 65 in. Samsung to arrive so I can hook up to my oppo and watch 3d blue ray movies. You will not be disappointed with this product!!
Pros: Easy set up, Bluetooth and quality
stylish and small, this puts out a tremendous amount of sound. I was blown away. excellent sound and quality. We were not able to get the volume to work with my TV, and having to use 2 different remotes to adjust sound, is kind of a pain.
Pros: excellent quality and
Cons: couldn't get matched up with TV remote,
The JBL SB 400 was easy to set up and the sound is incredibly good. The wireless subwoofer can be adjusted from subtle to booming. I almost spent four times the dollars on another system and I know that now that I've combined the JBL SB 400 with AppleTV it is just as versatile and sounds just as good.
Pros: easy set up. ability to easily adjust sound to what you are watching.
Cons: non yet
Very listenable soundbar/sub for the price. While it will never fool you into thinking that you have a surround system, the front soundstage is wide. Works fairly well with music, very nicely with movies. The sub does a decent job with all but deep bass. Highs are soft but pleasant. Easy setup.
Pros: Clean, decent bass, easy to use.
Cons: Remote could be better.
I ordered the SB 400 as a compromise with my spouse not to clutter up our living room the way I had previously had our media loft. Honestly, I was not expecting much but an upgrade to my TV speakers. Boy was I wrong!! The clarity of the soundbar and the richness of the accompanying sub are impressive. Set-up could not have been easier and the ability to stream music from other mobile devices is a huge added bonus.
Pros: Quality Ease of set-up Versatility in connecting to multiple sources
Cons: Can't think of any
Very happy with this product. Easy installation. Sub is perfect size and overall sound is crisp. Playing music through IPhone and other wireless devices is great.
Pros: Sound Bluetooth Size Easy Install
Performs as advertised. Very easy to setup. Very deep bass and handles both music and movies effectively. Would give it five stars but for inability to select the bluetooth source on the remote.
Pros: Easy set up Deep bass
Cons: Inability to select Bluetooth on the remote.
Great addition to any home theater system. I have been more than happy with this purchase. The subwoofer delivers some good bass and the speakers are crisp clear. I'm also fond of the blue tooth capability as it serves a dual function - one for the television in my living room and the other to play music off of my Droid.
Pros: crisp. wireless, good bass
The JBL Cinema SB 400 is incredible. Outstanding audio quality, crystal clear. Highly recommended.
Pros: Sleek design, incredible audio. Does exactly what you would expect it to do. Exceeded my expectations.
Very happy with the purchase. Recieved 2 days after ordering with the free shipping option. A couple CONS but not enough to hurt the performance of the unit.
Pros: Excellent sound quality Great Bass HDMI switching works great Bluetooth works and sound great Very solid craftsmanship
Cons: Remote is a tad cheesy. Not made as solid as the rest of the equipment HDMI inputs face straight down which make it difficult to place sound bar on a surface. Almost forced to buy HDMI angle adapter
I remember the J.B. Lansing speakers from back in the day. They were very good sounding and good quality speakers. I also have a JBL system in my Avalon which sounds excellent. These are two factors that led me to purchase this unit. This is a good sounding system, not harsh at all. The wireless sub is excellent as well. Quality sound was more important than anything else to me when I was shopping for a sound bar, and I believe this is the best in this price range.
Pros: Great sound, especially at louder volume, easy set up, pleasing to look at, many nice features
I'm using this system in combination with a 40" Samsung 1080p (ln40c670m1f). The quality for both music and movies is excellent, with awesome base from the sub woofer and crisp tones from sound bar. The Bluetooth capability is great if streaming Pandora from iPhone. Easy set-up and would highly recommend! My last speakers were a Bose Acoustimass 5.1 (several years ago..I would not recommend that system). This compact system performs much better, for a fraction of the price.
Pros: Easy user interface, great sound, looks good
Cons: None so far
If you're after great connectivity options, not running cables/wires, and solid sound for a medium sized room, this is the audio solution for you. I'm always pleased with the quality of JBL products I've owned, and after comparing other similar sound bars with subs, I realized this was the one for me.
My setup includes a Samsung 42" plasma, DirecTV DVR, Slingbox, PS3, and an Airport Express for streaming music. My priority for my configuration was ease of use, both for my wife and for guests. The JBL Cinema has a ton of connectivity options, but I want to avoid using an additional remote for the JBL so I decided to use my TV as a switcher and output the audio signal to the JBL Cinema.
I connected all of my sources to the plasma, disabled the TV speaker, and used the optical audio out to connect to the JBL Cinema SB 400. No matter what source I'm using, the JBL Cinema carries the audio signal. I do use the AUX input to connect my Airport Express, however the JBL Cinema also has Bluetooth for computer/iPhone connectivity...in either event though, you'll still have to pick up the remote to switch sources to AUX from Optical.
Bottom line is the JBL Cinema has great connectivity, solid range, sound that fills the room, and very easy set up. I ran the unit through the usual paces: race car movie, air combat movie, bass heavy hip hop, guitar heavy rock n' roll, and of course video games. The JBL nailed all the tests and is my sound bar of choice.
Pros: Solid sound for a reasonable price point. Unboxing and setup was easy. The instructions are thorough while being uncomplicated. The unit is recommended for 46" monitors but it does not look odd in front of a 42" set if that's a concern. This unit sets up like an entry level product but sounds mid to high end. If you're looking for simple without messing with wires, head units, and an extra remote, this is the right choice.
Cons: I'd go 5 stars if the sound bar could switch to the active source instead of having to use the remote or the unit's buttons. The only other con is that, the unit does not go into standby mode when not receiving a signal after 15 minutes. UPDATED 2/27: I'd like to bump the review to five stars and remove the "con" about the unit not powering down to standby mode after not using it for 10 minutes. After working with Casey in technical support I resolved that issue and this unit is worthy of a five star review.
Given the severe limitations of this 12 x 12 room, I was less aprehensive about the JBL's ability to reproduce movie sound than I was about its ability to double as my only option for a quality music source. I shouldn't have worried. JBL's produced a really versatile product here. I've run Pandora from both my Roku via HDMI and from my Galaxy S3 through bluetooth and I've heard no audible difference between the sources - both produce excellent sound across a wide range of musical styles. The bar sounds great even at very high volumes and the sub is solid and fully adjustable. I do wish the separation was greater but, it is a soundbar after all so, it has that built in constraint. The HDMI inputs make the soundbar an absolute breeze to set up. I'm more than satisfied - this was a great purchase!
Pros: Great sound, HDMI & Bluetooth provide a lot of flexibility for use
Cons: None so far
Purchased the JBL SB400 from Crutchfield and set it up a couple of days ago. Awesome product. Setup was easy, sound quality is great, and with the bluetooth it's virtually always on.......when not watching tv, wirelessly listening to the playlist on my ipad3, iphone, or any other bluetooth enabled devise. Maybe the coolest feature of all is the 200watt bluetooth subwoofer. You can move the subwoofer to any spot in the room where you can plug it in and get a different audio experience. I'm a JBL speaker junkie from way back, and this product gives you big speaker sound without the separate amplifier and all those wires........
Pros: Bluetooth, including the subwoofer
Cons: None so far......

Overview: The JBL Cinema SB400 is a 2.1ch speaker system with an active soundbar + wireless powered sub system that will dramatically improve the sound reproduction of your flat-panel TV and connected AV components. It also lets you wirelessly stream music from your Bluetooth-enabled devices. Designed to complement 40" and larger flat-panel televisions, the JBL Cinema SB400 is ideal for people who want premium sound quality with impressive bass performance in a nonintrusive, easy-to-install solution. The SB400 Soundbar system features exclusive Harman Display Surround, built-in Dolby Digital decoding, as well as HDMI, optical, and auxiliary inputs. The soundbar speaker can be mounted on a wall or placed on a shelf.
Active Soundbar Speaker: The SB400's active soundbar speaker houses two 1" dome tweeters and four 2.25" premium cone woofers powered by a 120-Watt amplifier. Its built-in amplification simplifies system connections and operation.
Wireless Powered Sub: The Cinema SB400's wireless powered sub features a down-firing 8" woofer in a bass reflex enclosure (front-firing port) with a built-in 100-watt amplifier that deliver impactful bass. And because the system is wireless, it puts no unsightly cables between the soundbar and subwoofer. The wireless powered sub offer independent level control (min/max), low-pass crossover adjustment (40-200Hz) and phase switch (0°/180°)-
Harman Display Surround + Dolby Digital Decoding: Drawing from Harman expertise in movie theater audio, the Cinema SB400 lets you add cinema sound without adding multiple speakers. Employing proprietary Harman Display Surround technology, it creates a virtual surround-sound experience for multiple listeners from a single soundbar. The Cinema SB400 can also decode Dolby Digital soundtracks, which eliminates conversion stages that reduce sound quality.
Bass Boost: JBL is known for exceptional bass response, and the Cinema SB400 lets you increase low-frequency performance at the touch of a button on the included remote. The added bass impact is ideal for movie soundtracks.
HDMI (v1.4) Connectivity: With three HDMI inputs, the Cinema SB400 provides convenient connection for multiple HDMI source components. It also includes one HDMI output with Audio Return Channel (ARC), which sends the TV sound back to the soundbar. This setup simplifies switching and makes the system easier to use.
Analog + Digital Audio Inputs: The Cinema SB400 features both analog (minijack) & digital (optical) inputs to connect your flat-panel TV and a Blu-ray/DVD player, or satellite/cable box to the system.
Bluetooth Technology: The Cinema SB400 features built-in Bluetooth A2DP, which allows you to wirelessly stream audio from your Apple iPod/iPhone/iPad, Android smartphone/tablet, Blackberry, laptop/computer, or other Bluetooth-enabled device to the JBL soundbar speaker system.
Remote Control: The Cinema SB400 comes with a credit card-sized IR remote. However, this soundbar speaker can also "learn" the IR (infrared) volume-control code of your existing TV remote control, taking away the need to keep track of yet another remote for controlling the volume on the soundbar.
Mounting Options: You can place the Cinema SB400's soundbar speaker on a shelf or tabletop, or wall-mount it with the included bracket. A dual-position equalization feature optimizes the soundbar's performance for any location. So you can position it where you choose without compromising sound quality. Because the SB400's powered subwoofer is wireless, you can position it any where in the room (within 25').

I have to use the TV speakers as have yet to find a solution. [ JASON Jan 26, 2015 ]
The JBL does a wonderful job of playing all content. I have the same setup and you can play TV content using the HDMI TV or optical connection. [ SPENCER Jan 26, 2015 ]
In fact it's very simple. You feed audio to JBL from your TV ( Audio Out Port) and not from cable box. It is the nicest unit. Ashok [ ASHOK V Jan 26, 2015 ]
Dennis, I bought this as a gift for my son so I am not personally using it. However, if I remember correctly, the soundbar has HDMI connections for both input and output. It sounds like your setup is cable box input to soundbar and out to tv. If your TV has an HDMI out, you can try two solutions: 1. Run the HDMI cable from your cable box to the TV input and another HDMI cable output from the TV to the soundbar input. This way, you do not need to change the input connection for your TV. 2. Run an additional HDMI cable from the TV output to the HDMI input. When you use the smart TV function, change the output and input settings on both the TV and the soundbar. Both ways should work provided you have the input and output connections on both devices. [ Morris Jan 26, 2015 ]
Hi- I think you can connect the TV to the JBL sounbar at input. Then you might try connecting your cable box via HDMI cable to the. Soundbar. And any other devices via HDMI 2 and 3 slots. Hope this helos. [ CYNTHIA Jan 26, 2015 ]
I'm using my Blu Ray Player's smart features to connect to my modem for things like Netflix, and using separate HDMI cables from the soundbar to both the TV and the Blu Ray. I'm using a cable to get the Internet connection, but it should work the same if you can use your Blu Ray player to make a wireless connection. Hope this helps. When I set mine up, I got a lot of great help over the phone from a Crutchfield advisor. Good luck! [ DANIEL A Jan 26, 2015 ]
It will work with smart tv if hooked up correctly. I use hdmi one for regular TV. When I watch movies on vudu hit the optical button on JBL remote. Hope this helps [ JEFF Jan 25, 2015 ]

Thanks for your question Miriam. You can certainly use your first generation iPod with this unit. You will simply need to connect to the auxiliary input from the headphone jack on the iPod. [ Jeff Nov 22, 2013 ] Staff
