A screen legend

If you pay attention to the world of movies, you know that great theater sound and the JBL nameplate have gone together for a very long time. Power and pathways

The Cinema SB400 starts with a total of 220 system watts — 100 of those reserved for the wireless subwoofer. In combination with JBL's Display Surround processing, this power generates an enveloping surround-like sweet spot that will draw you into the action on-screen. And that sound can come from several sources. The Cinema SB400 has three HDMI inputs, so you can connect Blu-ray players, streaming video players like an Apple® TV, or cable/satellite boxes, and use the sound bar's circuitry to select your program source. An optical digital input allows you to connect TVs that don't feature the latest HDMI connections with 2-way audio capabilities, and an analog stereo minijack gives you even more flexibility in accommodating other sound sources.

Music master

And that's not the whole story when it comes to inputs. Built-in Bluetooth® circuitry will receive signals from your smartphone, tablet, or other compatible streaming devices, so you can fill your viewing room with the music that's available at your fingertips. Be your own DJ from anywhere  within range. The system includes all the cables you'll need to get up and running right away, and if you choose to set it up in tabletop mode, it'll take just minutes to set up. All the necessary hardware for wall mounting the Cinema SB400 is included in the box.

    Features

Overview: The JBL Cinema SB400 is a 2.1ch speaker system with an active soundbar + wireless powered sub system that will dramatically improve the sound reproduction of your flat-panel TV and connected AV components. It also lets you wirelessly stream music from your Bluetooth-enabled devices. Designed to complement 40" and larger flat-panel televisions, the JBL Cinema SB400 is ideal for people who want premium sound quality with impressive bass performance in a nonintrusive, easy-to-install solution. The SB400 Soundbar system features exclusive Harman Display Surround, built-in Dolby Digital decoding, as well as HDMI, optical, and auxiliary inputs. The soundbar speaker can be mounted on a wall or placed on a shelf.

Active Soundbar Speaker: The SB400's active soundbar speaker houses two 1" dome tweeters and four 2.25" premium cone woofers powered by a 120-Watt amplifier. Its built-in amplification simplifies system connections and operation.

Wireless Powered Sub: The Cinema SB400's wireless powered sub features a down-firing 8" woofer in a bass reflex enclosure (front-firing port) with a built-in 100-watt amplifier that deliver impactful bass. And because the system is wireless, it puts no unsightly cables between the soundbar and subwoofer. The wireless powered sub offer independent level control (min/max), low-pass crossover adjustment (40-200Hz) and phase switch (0°/180°)-

Harman Display Surround + Dolby Digital Decoding: Drawing from Harman expertise in movie theater audio, the Cinema SB400 lets you add cinema sound without adding multiple speakers. Employing proprietary Harman Display Surround technology, it creates a virtual surround-sound experience for multiple listeners from a single soundbar. The Cinema SB400 can also decode Dolby Digital soundtracks, which eliminates conversion stages that reduce sound quality.

Bass Boost: JBL is known for exceptional bass response, and the Cinema SB400 lets you increase low-frequency performance at the touch of a button on the included remote. The added bass impact is ideal for movie soundtracks.

HDMI (v1.4) Connectivity: With three HDMI inputs, the Cinema SB400 provides convenient connection for multiple HDMI source components. It also includes one HDMI output with Audio Return Channel (ARC), which sends the TV sound back to the soundbar. This setup simplifies switching and makes the system easier to use.

Analog + Digital Audio Inputs: The Cinema SB400 features both analog (minijack) & digital (optical) inputs to connect your flat-panel TV and a Blu-ray/DVD player, or satellite/cable box to the system.

Bluetooth Technology: The Cinema SB400 features built-in Bluetooth A2DP, which allows you to wirelessly stream audio from your Apple iPod/iPhone/iPad, Android smartphone/tablet, Blackberry, laptop/computer, or other Bluetooth-enabled device to the JBL soundbar speaker system.

Remote Control: The Cinema SB400 comes with a credit card-sized IR remote. However, this soundbar speaker can also "learn" the IR (infrared) volume-control code of your existing TV remote control, taking away the need to keep track of yet another remote for controlling the volume on the soundbar.

Mounting Options: You can place the Cinema SB400's soundbar speaker on a shelf or tabletop, or wall-mount it with the included bracket. A dual-position equalization feature optimizes the soundbar's performance for any location. So you can position it where you choose without compromising sound quality. Because the SB400's powered subwoofer is wireless, you can position it any where in the room (within 25').

Will this system crank out big sound when listening to music or will I be disappointed with it?

you should like the volume of the speakers. However if you're used to finer quality speakers like polk for instance you might be disappointed. It's not high fidelity sound but for a sound bar is pretty good.

You will not be disappointed with the power and quality that this system offers. Because the sub-woofer is wireless, you'll have some options as to where it's located in your environment. Likewise you'll have to experiment some when placing the sub-woofer in an effort to get the best possible sound. But once you get things figured out, it's a high quality unit. The only real problem that I have with the unit is the small scale of the remote control and also the buttons on the top of the sound bar. They are very small, hard to read, and unfortunatly the remote is not back lit. JBL could have done a better job with the controls in general. Otherwise, it's a great piece of audio equipment.

I was very impressed by the quality of the sound and impact of the sub woofer. It will indeed crank out the sound unless you have a very large space to fill.

We have they JBL S400 hooked up to a Samsung 6400. It was playing beautifully until last week when the sound stopped on the soundbar. No changes were made t o the connections and I can still get volume for the TV from the internal speaker. Is there a fuse that could have blown and if so, where is it located, can I get a replacement fuse and is it simply enough to replace? We have had it for over a year.

I recently purchased the jbl 400, absolutely love it. Question is my smart TV has wireless Internet for such things as Netflix and so on, when I use the Internet I have to use the t.v.speakers for sound as the jbl 400 relays only the sound from my cable box. Do you have any solution for me to enjoy Internet functions using the soundbar. Thanks. ..Dennis?

The JBL does a wonderful job of playing all content. I have the same setup and you can play TV content using the HDMI TV or optical connection.

In fact it's very simple. You feed audio to JBL from your TV ( Audio Out Port) and not from cable box. It is the nicest unit. Ashok

Dennis, I bought this as a gift for my son so I am not personally using it. However, if I remember correctly, the soundbar has HDMI connections for both input and output. It sounds like your setup is cable box input to soundbar and out to tv. If your TV has an HDMI out, you can try two solutions: 1. Run the HDMI cable from your cable box to the TV input and another HDMI cable output from the TV to the soundbar input. This way, you do not need to change the input connection for your TV. 2. Run an additional HDMI cable from the TV output to the HDMI input. When you use the smart TV function, change the output and input settings on both the TV and the soundbar. Both ways should work provided you have the input and output connections on both devices.

Hi- I think you can connect the TV to the JBL sounbar at input. Then you might try connecting your cable box via HDMI cable to the. Soundbar. And any other devices via HDMI 2 and 3 slots. Hope this helos.

I'm using my Blu Ray Player's smart features to connect to my modem for things like Netflix, and using separate HDMI cables from the soundbar to both the TV and the Blu Ray. I'm using a cable to get the Internet connection, but it should work the same if you can use your Blu Ray player to make a wireless connection. Hope this helps. When I set mine up, I got a lot of great help over the phone from a Crutchfield advisor. Good luck!

I am experiencing random popping sounds from the soundbar and subwoofer and have found other postings of this complaint. Is this a connection problem (I have satellite receiver in HDMI 1, Roku in HDMI 2 and HDMI Output to TV), or a defective SB400 unit?
