Our take on the Jensen VX7020

by Dominic Devito
Jensen

Why install a car stereo with built-in GPS?

Imagine taking a trip as your car's receiver gives you directions, finds the best restaurant for dinner, and plays movies for your back seat denizens. Navigation receivers cover all the bases, with GPS guidance, DVD playback, and a host of other useful features. You can search through millions of points of interest to locate gas stations, restaurants, museums, and other interesting spots, wherever you are. Most receivers offer Bluetooth capability for hands-free calling, along with the ability to search through your iPod playlists with touchscreen controls.

Find your way without losing your wallet

Jensen's VX7020 navigation receiver delivers real value, sporting an impressive 6.2" LCD screen that gives you easy command over your audio and video sources. You can also incorporate your phone with hands-free calling and streaming audio capabilities. Add the cost of the stress you'll save by not having to worry about getting lost, and this Jensen becomes a worthy investment.

Take it to the streets

The VX7020 boasts maps of the entire U.S., Puerto Rico, and U.S. Virgin Islands, plus millions of points of interest for when it's time to take a break. Lane guidance will keep you on the right path for your next maneuver, and you'll be able to see realistic depictions of many complex intersections that make them easier to navigate.

The VX7020's powered by iGO primo navigation software, which has become an industry standard over the past few years because it's fast, accurate, and easy to use. This stereo's compatible with Naviextras, which allows you to download maps for other countries, including points of interest, through their website.

Bluetooth® calling and music streaming

This Jensen offers Bluetooth connectivity, so you'll be able to make and take calls using your compatible phone through the stereo. Built-in A2DP technology allows you to stream music from your smartphone through this receiver, and gives you control over the music on your Android™ phone or iPhone®.

If you've got Pandora Internet radio on your iPhone®, you can control it through the VX7020's interface when connected.

Sonic solutions

This receiver will play all your CDs and DVDs, including discs loaded with music files, while front and rear A/V inputs offer connections for more audio/video sources. Go ahead and load up your iPod® or thumb drive with tunes for your travels — the receiver's front USB port provides convenient access.

When you're parked, you can enjoy movies from DVDs or other video sources on the receiver's display, and you can add Jensen's optional jLinkUSB cable to view iPod video content. Jensen includes a wireless remote control, allowing your passengers to pick the playlist.

Expand your system

Why struggle with stations fading away as you travel? You can hook up a satellite radio tuner (not included) to this receiver and access the wide variety of entertainment, sports, news, and commercial-free music satellite radio provides — your favorite stations are always there and, even better, you can view the channel art on the big screen. You can also connect a rear-view camera, so you can see more of what's behind your vehicle when getting in and out of tight spots. If you're looking to add subs and amps, you can take advantage of front, rear, and subwoofer preamp outputs.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?

In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with a new car stereo. Check “Details” for more information, and the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters. If you're not sure if you need an adapter, call, chat, or email an Advisor for help determining what you'll need for your vehicle.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

    Touchscreen Display

6.2" Touchscreen Display: The Jensen VX7020 features a fixed 6.2" widescreen touchscreen LCD monitor. The screen has a resolution of 800 x RGB (3) x 480 with 1,152,000 total pixels. This unit has touchscreen controls with interactive video graphics, making menu navigation easy. The Jensen VX7020 offers a variety of display adjustments to customize the display.

    • UI Colors: You can adjust the colors of the on-screen menu's touchscreen buttons from Green, Red, Amber, Blue, or Purple.
    • Background Skins: You can choose from five different background skins - Engine Start, Blue Haze, Green Cubes, Red Swirl or Tribal.
    • Brightness: The unit's LCD backlight can be adjusted to Night, Dark, Normal, or Bright.
    • Picture Adjustment: When watching a video, you can adjust the touchscreen display's brightness, contrast, saturation, and hue (from 1-20).
Note: You can select English, French, or Spanish for the unit's on-screen menu display.

Start-Up Time: The Jensen VX7020 will turn on to the last source selected. The unit has start-up time of approximately 12.95 seconds from OFF to the last Source selected.

Clock & Date Display: The navigation receiver offers a 12- or 24-hour clock display which is visible from any source or menu screen. The clock & date are both visible on the main menu screen only.

Hard-Key Controls: In addition to the touchscreen controls, the unit includes frequently used buttons and a rotary-dial along the left edge of the screen. You can adjust the head unit's button illumination from the following preset colors - Blue, Purple, Sky Blue, Aqua Blue, Yellow, Green, Red, White or Demo (scans through all preset colors). You can also select a custom "Custom" color that is adjusted between Red, Green, and Blue (values range: 0-255).

Parking Brake Detection: For safety reasons, you cannot view a video source on the built-in monitor as long as the vehicle is in motion. In order to display video, the head unit's pink wire must be hardwired into the vehicle's parking brake light circuit, and the vehicle's parking brake must be engaged.

2-DIN Chassis: The Jensen VX7020 has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as "Double-DIN"), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. The unit can be ISO-mounted using factory brackets. There is no mounting-sleeve for Euro-mount vehicles. As always, please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to verify fit with your vehicle.

    Onboard Navigation

iGO Primo & TomTom Navigation: The Jensen VX7020 contains map coverage of the United States (all 50 states) and Puerto Rico with over 11,000,000 points-of-interests from TomTom; all stored on a pre-installed 4GB SDHC memory card (the SDHC map card must remained installed in order for navigation system to function). The map database was created using high-resolution aerial and land based data collection. The VX7020 employs iGO primo navigation software for turn-by-turn visual and voice assistance to your selected destination. The software quickly calculates step-by-step directions to any destination available on the included on-screen navigation map.

Note: Car navigation maps are frequently updated. While the database was judged to be as accurate as possible at the time of its release, a map database can never be 100% accurate. Road information that is maintained in the map databases, such as turn restrictions or road names may change over time.

Map Updates: iGO offers periodic updates for data such as roads, new addresses, and other navigational information that will keep the Jensen navigation system up to date and provide the best possible experience. For updates and add-on options, please visit www.naviextras.com. A free program called "Toolbox" can be downloaded from this website so you can create a copy of your map as a backup, as well as assist in easily checking for updates and optional features that are available.

Note: You have 90 days from purchase to download the latest available map free of charge.

GPS Receiver & Antenna: The Jensen VX7020 features a built-in SiRFprima GPS receiver and includes an external GPS antenna which determines vehicle speed and heading changes, along with longitude and latitude information, to accurately determine vehicle heading and position on the system's digital map. The GPS antenna can be mounted inside or outside of the vehicle. The GPS antenna measures 1.5625" (w) x 0.625" (h) x 1.9375" (d); with a 10' cable.

Note: The navigation receiver took approximately 12.07 seconds to calculate directions from Virginia to California. It only took 8.25 seconds to calculate directions from Virginia to Maryland. These tests were done inside the Crutchfield Lab of the Crutchfield Head Quarters. Results will vary based on length of calculated route and your surrounding area.

On-Screen Map: The unit's on-screen map shows your vehicle's current position (a blue arrow by default), the recommended route (an orange line), the surrounding map area, and your destination as a checkered flag. The on-screen map shows streets, roads, and highways in a way that is similar to how a paper road map show them. A road's width and colors corresponds to their importance, so you can easily tell a freeway from a small street. When navigating a route, the top section of the map screen shows information about your next route maneuver and the next street or the next city/town. When approaching a turn, the map screen will zoom in and raise the view angle to let you easily recognize your maneuver at the next junction. If the next turn is at a distance, it will zoom out and lower the view angle to be flat so you can see the road in front of you. The map also displays data; such as the posted speed limit, your current speed, current time, distance to your destination, time left before you reach your destination, and your arrival time.

    • 2D/3D Map Mode: The Jensen VX7020 allows you to view its on-screen map in a 2D (two-dimensional) or 3D (three-dimensional) view. Similar to paper road maps, the 2D mode, shows you streets, roads, and elevation by color. In 3D mode, you can see the altitude and elevations differences. You can distinguish between valleys, mountains, and elevated roads.
    • Color Mode: The navigation map screen uses different color themes (Day/Night) during the day and during the night for both the map and the menu screen. Daytime colors are similar to paper road maps, and the menus are bright. The nigh color themes use dark colors for large objects to keep the average brightness of the screen low. You can also set the navigation unit to switch between daytime and night color modes automatically based on the current time and GPS position.
Note: You can continue to listen to a selected source while viewing the on-screen navigation map.

Lane Information & Signposts: The Jensen VX7020's navigation map offers helpful lane information and signpost guidance, along with junction view.

    • Lane Information: When navigation on multilane roads, it is important to take the appropriate lane in order to follow the recommended route. If lane information is available in the map data, the map screen will display the lanes and their directions using small arrows at the bottom of the map. High lighted arrows represent the lanes you need to take.
    • Signposts: Where additional information is available, signposts substitute arrows. Signposts are displayed at the top of the map. The color and style of the signposts are similar to the real ones you can see above the road or by the roadside, They show the available destinations and the number of the road the lane leads to.
    • Junction View: If you are approaching a freeway exit or a complex intersection and the needed information exists, the map is replaced with a 3D view of the junction. The lanes you need to take are displayed with arrows. Signposts can also be present, if information is available.

Audible Alerts: The Jensen VX7020 offers various audible alerts and functions to help you get to your destination safely.

    • Voice Guidance: In addition to graphic directions, the VX7020 provides voice guidance with turn-by-turn instructions (street names are not announced). You can select from English, French, Spanish, Korean, Japanese, and Chinese audible languages. The volume of the voice prompts can be increased with increases in speed to overcome road noise. Voice guidance can be turned off if you prefer.
    • Safety Alert: This function can warn you when you approach road safety cameras, school zones, or railroad crossings (if available). You can also add your own alert points. Beeps or the spoken type of alert will be heard when you are approaching of these points.
    • Speed Limit Warning: Some maps may contain information about the speed limits of certain road segments. The VX7020 provides an audible warning if you exceed the recommended speed limit.

Note: While navigating, other sources may be selected and listened to; such as AM/FM Tuner, CD, USB, iPod, & Bluetooth. The unit will mute the audio of the other source during navigation voice-prompts.

Where Am I?: This screen contains information about the current position (or approximately the last known position if GPS reception is not available) and a button to search for Car Repair, Health Agencies, Police, and Gas Stations around your area.

Find Destination: From the "Find" menu, you can select your destination by entering an address or selecting a place of interest (11,000,000 POIs), a location on the map or one of your Favorite destinations. You can also look up your recent destinations from Smart History, enter a coordinate, or use the location saved in a photo. iGO primo offers you several ways of choosing your destination:

    Destination Search Description
Browse Map Select a point on the map for your destination by touching the screen.
Address Enter a full address or a part of an address; for example a street name without a house number or the names of two intersecting streets. Or enter ZIP code only; this way you do not need to select the name of the city and the search for street names might be faster as well.
POIs Search over 11 million POIs (points-of interest) by name, near you current location, along route, near your destination, or around a city.
Favorites You can save your favorite addresses (like home & work) and POIs for quicker access the next time you are traveling.
History The places that you have set as destinations in the past are automatically stored for easier access. Smart History suggests these previously used locations as destinations based on your navigation habits, using parameters like the current time of day, the day of week, and the current location.
Coordinates Allows you to search your destination by longitude and latitude values.

Route Calculation: The Jensen VX7020 calculates your route based on your Vehicle Type, Route Method, and Avoidances.

    • Vehicle Type: You select what type of vehicle you are driving, so the navigation unit can determine the best route based on your vehicle type (Car, Emergency, Bus, or Taxi).
    • Route Method: You can choose which route method (Fastest, Shortest, Green, Economical, or Easy) the navigation unit should use when calculating your route.
      • Fastest: give a quick route, if you can travel at or near the speed limit on all roads. Usually the best section for fast and normal cars
      • Shortest: gives a route that has the smallest total distance of all possible routes. It can be practical for slow vehicles
      • Green: gives a quick, but full efficient route based on the fuel consumption data you provide
      • Easy: results in a route with fewer turns and no difficult maneuvers
    • Avoidances: You can tell the navigation unit to avoid certain types of roads along your calculated route, such as - Highways, Tolls, Carpool/HOV, Unpaved Roads, and/or Ferries.

Detours & Alternatives: You can select "Route Alternative" to see the turn-list and map screen of four routes (Fastest/Shortest/Economical/Easy) with the selected route planning parameters, giving you the option to select which route to take. You can also choose to Detour around the road ahead, avoid a specific road, or around a section of the route.

Router Planner: The Route Planner feature lets you built your route using the list of destinations you have chosen. You can modify the list as you like (adding or removing a destination (waypoint), changing a final destination, or setting a new starting position.

Itinerary w/ Route Simulation: The Itinerary page displays turn-by-turn instructions for your entire route and the distance between turns. You can preview all the route information and simulate travel along a projected route.

Automatic Route Recalculation: The unit will automatically recalculate your route if you stray from the navigation unit's previously calculated route.

Trip Logs: Trip logs contain useful information about your trip. Trip logs can be saved manually when you reach your destination or automatically along your route. Trip log data includes; Start/End Time, Avg./Max. Speed, Total/Driving/Stopped Time, Total Distance, and Min./Max. Altitude.

Quick Menu: The Quick menu is a selection of controls and functions that are frequently needed during navigation; it can be opened directly from the Map screen. The content of the Quick Menu is fully customizable.

Off-Road Navigation: The difference between the on-road and off-road modes is the navigation itself. When you are on the Map screen with an off-road route, your position and heading is not aligned with the nearest road and there is no turn by turn navigation; just a recommended direction. You see a straight line drawn between your current position and the next destination to reach. The Turn Preview field in the top left corner shows an arrow with your bearing and the distance of the next destination.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The Jensen VX7020 is equipped with built-in Bluetooth, allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP (Hands Free Profile), PBAB (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Before using the unit's Bluetooth functions, you must pair your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone or audio device to the VX7020. Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some mobile devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the VX7020.

Hands-Free Communication (w/ external mic): The VX7020 supports Bluetooth hands-free communication from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. You can answer an incoming call from the head unit's touchscreen and carry on a phone conversation hands-free. The included external microphone carries on your side of the conversation while your car's speakers are used to hear the other person. You can make a call by entering the phone number, selecting a contact from your Phonebook list, or using the Call History Log of received/dialed/missed calls.

    • Answering A Call: During an incoming call, the caller's phone number will be seen on the unit's LCD and a ring-tone will be heard through your car stereo speakers. You can then manually answer the incoming call from the head unit's front-panel controls. You can also set the unit to automatically answer an incoming call within 5 seconds.
    • Making A Call: You can make a call using the Jensen in-dash head unit's front-panel controls. Outgoing calls can be made be entering telephone numbers (0-9, *, #) directly via the head unit's touchscreen. You can also search for contact names in your mobile phone's phonebook from the Jensen VX7020 and then make your call. In addition, you can make a call by searching your mobile phone's call history (Received/Dialed/Missed).

Wireless Audio Streaming: The Jensen VX7020 allows you to play back stored music and music apps from your Bluetooth enabled smartphone, tablet, or audio player. You can control basic music playback functions (Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track) from the VX7020. Advanced music navigation will still need to be done through your Bluetooth mobile device. This unit does not display song/artist information from connected Bluetooth audio devices. When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Off Eject: You can eject a disc with the unit powered off. You cannot insert a disc with the head unit powered off.

    iPod/iPhone Integration

iPod/iPhone Connectivity: The Jensen VX7020 navigation receiver supports connection to either Dock-connector or Lightning-connector Apple iPods and iPhones.

    • 30-Pin Dock Connector iPod/iPhone: The optional jLink-USB cable (110JLINUSB, sold separately) allows you to connect your iPod or Phone (w/ dock connector) to the VX7020 through the head unit's front-panel USB port and 3.5mm AV input. This type of connection supports playback of audio/video content stored on your Apple device, as well as music and movies streamed to your iPhone from select apps. If you only require iPod/iPhone audio playback, you can simply connect your iPod/iPhone to the VX7020's front-panel USB input via the USB/Dock connector cable that came with your iPod/iPhone. You will also need to use the included mini-USB (type-B) to USB (type-A) adapter cable for this connection.
    • Lightning-Connector iPod/iPhone: If you have an iPod/iPhone with the new Lightning-connector; use the Lightning-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect to the head unit's front-panel USB input. These Apple devices only support audio playback of stored music and streamed music apps on your iPod/iPhone device. These Apple devices do not support video output.

Note: Connecting your iPod/iPhone directly to the head unit via USB (using the cable that came with your device), bypasses the Apple device's DAC and utilizes the 24-bit DAC in the VX7020 for maximized sound quality. Using the optional jLink-USB cable from Jensen does not bypass the iPod/iPhone DAC, so you are limited to the DAC in your Apple device.

iPod/iPhone Control: The Jensen VX7020 offers music & video navigation, as well as display of song/artist information and battery charging.
    • Content Browsing: You can control your connected iPod/iPhone from the head unit's touchscreen. I had my Jenson installed by a professional so I would have no worries. Sadly I wish I had messed around with someones elses first.
    Pros:
Nice Display. Touch screen is nice. Looks great in the Dash.
    Cons:
Navigation is terrible. I updated it and it still takes the worse route to everything. Cant turn off the Speeding Warning real annoying when your not speeding. Radio reception is terrible. Bluetooth is sluggish. Navigation repeats a warning you have to push every time you use it.

Great unit for the price. I have read some reviews online that said the navigation is buggy and slow. I found that if you turn on almost EVERY option, it does bog down doing some actions, but it's rare. When updating the Igo Primo software, make sure you put in a destination at least once before putting the micro sd card in your computer, or the software on yourcomputer (from naviextras.com) may not recognize it. It seems the software has an issue recognizing the card if it's still "stock". The iPod, DVD, backup camera, and bluetooth all work very well. The only issues I have found are that the radio reception is weaker than my stock unit and the clock on the radio is off by as much as 16 hours. The clock is run by the GPS clock, but i haven't figured out the "trick" to getting it to sync up consistently. This unit will only connect to one bluetooth device at a time.
    Pros:
iPod, DVD, bluetooth, backup camera, GPS all work great
    Cons:
    Radio clock is erratic

Great Upgrade in 2001 Toyota Tacoma

Written By AP, Wisconsin on Sunday, August 03, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am very surprised and pleased with the level of functionality that this unit provides. I did not want to make an outrageous investment in my aging Tacoma, but I wanted something with bluetooth capability, not only for calls, but to stream music from my Android phone. The fact that this unit has navigation seemed to be a bonus. I wasn't expecting much, because it costs significantly less than many other comparable models. But now that I have been using it for about a month, I think it was an exceptional deal. Installation was relatively easy; I started one evening after work around 7PM, and finished by 9PM. The only element that signals it is not an OEM installation is the bezel. The trim and small cover over the SD and USB input, is a high gloss black. The rest of my dash is a black matte finish. If the Jensen used a similar matte finished, it would have matched perfectly. Nevertheless, I am still very happy with the purchase.
    Pros:
Easy installation Responsive touch screen Navigation is accurate Sound clarity is great Bluetooth operates seamlessly
    Cons:
Screen contrast is perfect at night, but could be better in daylight High gloss black trim would look better with a matte finish

I was in the market for a replacement HU as my factory Radio in my 2009 Mitsubishi Outlander ES was on its way out. CD skipping and losing power etc. I was about to pull the trigger on the Blaupunkt SanDiego 530 when I noticed this model. If you look carefully you can tell both units are made by the same company (AudioVox). This Jensen actually has more features (Pandora) but slightly less power. It arrived about 2 days after ordering along with the dash kit and harness. I started my install at about 5pm and by 7pm I was done. Easy install and a tremendous unit to boost. Killer sound and features galore. Not sure why anybody would spend the extra money on anything else I just don't see it. Do not be put off by the name as this piece is a gem. Very recently released and has Windows CE 6 as it's underlying OS. I cannot recommend highly enough. GPS is also very accurate and speedy.
    Pros:
Sound, aesthetics, ease of use, features galore buy it...
    Cons:
    None !

    Remarkable for its value!

Its really sad when just adding a bluetooth module to your factory unit cost more then getting this fantastic Navi! I did a lot of searching around and knowing what I wanted, BT, Navi, HF, DVD, and etc. this had it all plus the price is fantastic! After talking to one of their tech specialist I made sure I had everything needed. Super knowledgeable and made sure I wasn't getting anything I didn't need to pay for. I've installed simple headunits in older cars in the past, this was the first Navi I've ever installed, on top of that it was in a vehicle where everything was controlled by the computer (CANBUS). Got to say this stereo with the harness the tech suggested made this the easiest install I have ever done and I've done a good deal of them! If you want an affordable NAVI set up with great quality and support get this!
    Pros:
Easy install, Sound Quality, Video Quality, Set Up is Easy, Voice readout of text message is super clear, Navi very responsive, 3D Maps, Gives Local Suggestions of things in the area, Traffic, Red Light, Speed limit Warnings it has options for more then I can list
    Cons:
Difficult to figure out how to update NAVI, Can only use default backgrounds

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the price hard to beat this unit. Being able to add navigation and Bluetooth as well as the option for a rear view camera were key points. The installation was straightforward and upon completion it looks like an OEM unit thanks to the trim pieces provided. Bluetooth connectivity excellent and easy. Navigation update with mini sd card no problem. If you want a highly customizable display then a higher priced unit will be what you want. All in all an excellent value with all the features I needed.
    Pros:
Ease of installation User interface easy to use
    Cons:
Steering wheel control feature required the purchase of an ASWC-1, that was not clear from the instructions but was confirmed by telephone support.

    Jensen VX7020 in 2007 ford f150

Written By JeffH, WV on Wednesday, July 16, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a good unit that was fairly easy to install. I also installed a backup camera at the same time. The most difficult part of the installation was finding the correct reverse wire supplied by the vehicle. I was able to find in in the large wiring harness that connects to the radio(however the supplied wiring harness adapter did not include a wire for it.). Smart of Ford to supply that even though the vehicle did not have a camera already. Once I connected the reverse wire( which goes from 0 to 12v when vehiche is in reverse) to the radio the camera comes on automatically when the vehicle is placed in reverse.

Nav In order to update the nav to the latest version you will need to pull the SD card from the radio and use a computer that can read the sdcard to update it. Then go to the supplied website and download the software for the PC(you will need to create an account on website). Once the software is installed you can launch it and it should then see the sdcard and recognize that it is from the nav. You then need to login to your account in the software and once this is done you can update to the latest version.
    Pros:
Nice display Fairly easy to install but takes some time.
    Cons:
    Poor instructions for updating nav.

Shiny and poor fit for Subaru, but works well

Written By heysue, hillsvville on Tuesday, July 15, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am obsessed by the appearance. It is so obvious that it is an aftermarket addition (the first one I tried looked like stock but didn't work). I was SO disappointed when I paid my $200 to install it and it looked like that! It was a very shiny black (I painted it with matte clear, which worked great). We are working on modifications to make it come forward some (it is recessed over 1/2 inch- knob almost flush with outer console!), but it is in place and working properly. The radio and GPS work well, easy to operate. I don't like the map as well as my Garmin- a little harder to see. It doesn't display your speed, but says occasionally "You are exceeding the speed limit." I love the auto-finish on the GPS when you start to put in a location. It's pretty smart. I've only used it once. I noticed one exit had the old number- how old are the maps? Works great with steering wheel column.
    Pros:
easy to operate steering wheel works (with adapter) for Subaru GPS and stereo seem to work well-GPS finishes words for you
    Cons:
APPEARANCE- GLOSSY black APPEARANCE- won't slide forward far enough in trim piece GPS may be a little harder to see than Garmin and may need update

    jensen vx7020

Written By DD, yorkville, il on Thursday, July 10, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I tried 3 different jensen models and this by far is the best. The vx6020 is good but it has no external microphone like the vx7020.
    Pros:
Display bright and adjustable Speed(specifically start up and bluetooth connection) Fluid OS Intuitive OS External microphone (Internal mics seem to not pick up your voice unless you are shouting and its still quiet for the person you are talking to) thankfully the vx7020 has one unlike the vx6020
    Cons:
When I'm talking through bluetooth and put the car in reverse the phone call switches to the phone and is no longer through bluetooth. On a side note I do have a backup camera connected, and more specifically I utilized the reverse camera wire on the harness(this allows the camera to display when you engage reverse as opposed to selecting the camera app on the home screen). I'm not sure why this happens, perhaps a safety feature but there is nothing in the manual about it.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed the Jesnon VX7020. Working great. Bought it mainly for blue tooth, and navigation and back up camera. does not come with camera. I bought the camera online which works good.. Went to Houston from San Antonio TX and got to see it in action. At first I did not set it with highway settings so was giving me errors. once I got settings right it worked like a charm. also got to find restaurants of choice . Crutchfield did an excellent job with instructions and packing. Arrived on time. Very happy with my purchase
    Pros:
Has all the features I was looking fo for a very reasonable price. blue tooth, navigation, Cd player, back up camera and radio. option to add XM radio , Pandora and more.
    Cons:
to view back up camera you have to choose the backup camera option every time you using it vs going to it automatically. it works , so takes you couple of buttons to press to see it.

Replacing the bad sounding factory radio was going to happen from day one. Chose this due to past Jensen Experience. Sounds GREAT. Wanted the Rear Camera, Nav and Sirius functions and they all work very Well. Overall well pleased.
    Pros:
    Nav, Sirius, Sound, features
    Cons:
Built in Steering wheel controls. After calling Jensen support , finally had to order an adapter ASWC-1 to get them to work properly. This is the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars. Programming them was also QUIRKY. With help from Jensen support, found out, I had to program them one at a time. The unit wants to do them all at once, but that never worked properly. One at a time always worked.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Couldn't beat the price! The radio is a significant upgrade from the stock 2004 Ford E350 van radio. Radio plays strong, DVD volume is lower for some reason. Still going through the various settings to see if a default volume limiter is the issue. The DVD player seems to defualt to widescreen which is a pretty small view on this screen. Still working that one, too. :) I've paired the bluetooth to my phone and it works fine. I've used the built in GPS and it also works fine. It does not have an audio out to send to the rear. It does have a subwoofer pre-amp output that I have not used. I don't have steering wheel controls so I can't speak to how well those work. All in all, I'm quite happy with this purchase. Five stars if it had an audio output to go with the video output.
    Pros:
Good price Nice looking Touch screen works well Built in GPS and Bluetooth
    Cons:
No audio output to accompany video output

    VASTLY IMPROVED

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had purchased a Jensen VM9424 about 3 years back and still have it in my BMW, and it still works well enough. I purchased the VX7020 from CRUTCHFIELD recently for my C320 Mercedes. I was pleasantly surprised to see the many improvements that Jensen have made in this model compared to the VM9424. Most noticeable of all is the High Resolution Touch Screen. The menu is totally redesigned. Navigation is even better. The external appearance has also improved and the fit in the dash, absolutely perfect. Thanks also to CRUTCHFIELD for the perfect FREE Dash kit. I highly recommend this product.

Didn't fit right with 06 Nissan Frontier

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This stereo did not fit in my car for some reason. The brackets fit fine on the radio but there were a couple of problems. The radio sat backwards a little from the front of the trim, but also at a slightly different angle. The top of the stereo was almost in the right place, but there was a bit gap on the bottom where I could stick my pinky finger in about 1/2". Also, when the navigation antenna was screwed in, the radio would not allow me to push it back far enough to mount it in. Overall, I was disappointed because the interface seemed and I thought I was really going to love the stereo, but I ended up having to send it back and exchange it for a Kenwood and see how things go.
    Pros:
Great interface from what I could tell (limited use to really gauge entire stereo). Awesome features for the price point and the sound sounded full and clear.
    Cons:
Does not fit properly in all cars. There was a disclaimer in the instructions to use some extra trim part in certain car models, and apparently I have one of those models. The trim could in no way make it look anywhere close to decent.

    jensen rules

Written By CharlesW, Atlanta on Thursday, June 12, 2014

received this receiver quickly, as is normal with Crutchfield! all of the item that I needed were included. Installed in a Honda, so you'd think it would be mainstream and it was! No real problems, with the exception of the steering wheel controls, Jensen said it would work with most resistive controls, Crutchfield recommended that I order an adapter (I did not). Good thing, as it worked perfectly with the Honda controls after I deciphered the instructions (poorly written docs). Lo and behold its sound belies its price, rich and full and customizable! Drives my stock honda sub perfectly and fits like it was delivered in the car. I also added the Sirius XM add-on tuner that works great. Would give it 5 stars (great value!) but the docs leave a lot to be desired.
    Pros:
Value, sound, display (and of course Crutchfield!)
    Cons:
    Documentation, interface is slightly sluggish

Can I purchase a bluetooth camera and hook it up to this? Also, will I still be able to use my cell phone if the camera and phone are on bluetooth? [ Matt  Aug 14, 2014 ]
    5 answers
    • I hooked up a hard wired camera I believe the Bluetooth is only for audio/phone. You should call Jensen direct there tech is very good I called them about the SWC and they helped me [ James   Aug 17, 2014 ]
    • I do believe the camera will hook up just fine. But for both to be linked at the same time I will have to.check it out for you. I'll let you know what I figure out and if you have anything else you want me to check out for you just let me know. [ KYLE   Aug 16, 2014 ]
    • Not familiar with Bluetooth cameras my backup camera is hardwire.... Cellphone use will override any Bluetooth music streaming.....hope this helps! I'm very pleased with my unit, had a microSD card failure with navigation software but Audiovox replaced immediately and working fine! [ Michael   Aug 16, 2014 ]
    • I don't think bt camera will work, you can use wireless backup camera on it though. You can use the phone when you use Bluetooth . [ Hai Heng   Aug 16, 2014 ]
    • It will probably work as the home screen has a selection for camera (App). So you will have to switch between camera and phone. I can't confirm that it will work as I use a wired rear view camera with a distance scale (Pyle). I am really happy with the performance and screen resolution of the VX7020. You can call Jensen support for more info. [ AMER   Aug 16, 2014 ]
Does this unit work with rear entertainment system. I'd like to load video on usb and not have to worry about DVDs? [ Artticus  Aug 13, 2014 ]
    1 answer
    • Answer....Yes. The unit will play movies, music & photo's from the USB such as a storage device or thumb drive (plugged into the USB input). It can drive rear screens also. [ John   Aug 18, 2014 ]

How can i get traffic information integrated into the navigation system of this Jensen unit - is there a special receiver to connect / install? [ Todd  Aug 07, 2014 ]

    • Just a simple check box in the settings of navigation. [ AMER   Aug 16, 2014 ]
    • Hi!. No, just install the stereo and that It. [ sergio   Aug 08, 2014 ]
    • I don't believe that you can. naviextras-dot-com is where that would be available, and there is no traffic info option available there for the Jensen VX7020. And the phone interface makes no mention of pass-though support of a navi app on the phone. [ Larry   Aug 08, 2014 ]
I have a factory stock am/fm/Sirius xm/c player with Bluetooth and steering wheel control. ..I wish to upgrade my system with Navigation system and DVD player .plus I like my music really Loud ..so is this the product that I can easily install into my 2010 Camaro RS ??? Really nice radio everything has worked well so far I like it as much as my kenwood I have in my Yukon and if you do need help there tec will stay on the line until you get it right. Very helpfully with my kenwood [ daniel   Aug 01, 2014 ]
    • I am very satisfied with this radio, I installed it my 2004 ram pickup. I wanted navigation and a backup camera. I do not have steering wheel controls but I believe it is set up for it, you just need the harness. A great radio for the price. The installation was easy. I soldered the wires for a trouble free installation. Hope this helps, Paul [ paul   Jul 31, 2014 ]
With the Jensen VX7020 Navigation software..or IGO....Is a quick way to turn off or stop the Nav process?.......There is no Off switch or option. unless you go deep into the sub menus to find the cancel button. Very hard to remember what to do while I am driving. [ Gregory  Jul 28, 2014 ]

Would I need to get a special case for the double din to fit my 2005 acura rsx or can I just use the stock radio frame? [ brian  Jul 27, 2014 ]

    • Mine came with everything needed to install as long as this radio said it will fit your vehicle [ James   Jul 29, 2014 ]
    • You don't need any type of case, but you do need the vinyl trim plate that Crutchfield provides to fill in the stock trim plate that is customized for the factory radio (the replacement trim plate has a rectangular opening for the radio and a circular opening for the emergency flasher button). I did decide to send back the Jensen unit because of a couple of issues: 1) the FM tuner seemed to cut out frequently (the reception would drop off suddenly for a couple of seconds--this happened very rarely with the stock radio); and 2) since the Jensen has only speaker outputs (not pre-amp outputs), the speaker output should be attenuated with another device that Crutchfield sells (although that device is not strictly necessary). At the recommendation of the shop that installed my radio, I ended up swapping out the Jensen for a Kenwood DNX691HD radio. It is a good deal more expensive, but it appears to be a far better radio/navigation receiver than the Jensen and since it has pre-amp output, there is no need to worry about attenuating the volume. [ Gary   Jul 29, 2014 ]
    • No [ Faizul   Jul 29, 2014 ]
    • Brain, being a customer who recently purchased the Jensen VX7020, all I can add is that Crutchfield will provide you a Metra trim and bracket kit with your order...if one is made for your car. The Double DIM dimension is 4" x7" but is reduced by a 1/4" so as to fit against the face of the new Jensen along the edges. You should first verify that you have an existing front face dimension that is equal or greater then 4" x 7" Also Crutchfield will tell you if the radio will fit your car. [ Gregory   Jul 28, 2014 ]
    • This will depend largely on your vehicle. For details on installation please contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and give you the details on what you will need for an installation. [ Greg Staff  Jul 28, 2014 ]

How does the screen look at different times of the day? Can you adjust the brightness to auto dim? Can you change the text colors or have custom backgrounds other than the factory default backgrounds? Can you connect iphone5 via USB and control apps like Pandora from the radios touch screen? [ Tim Conner  Jul 16, 2014 ]

    • read the owners manual...it tells you how to adjust the colors and the brightness...I have no problem in mine and I just allow the colors to change randomly....I also plug in my iPhone and it plays whatever I have stored on it automatically...I haven't tried to manipulate the programming but I believe that can best be done from the phone itself. does it have a dedicated rear view camera input that takes precedence over any other input when placed in reverse without having to manually change nua setting? [ Ralph  Jul 15, 2014 ]

    • I have mine installed in a 2000 Toyota Tacoma with a manual transmission and the camera activates immediately, even before the system is fully booted up. It should work for you provided you have the camera attached to your reverse light power wire... [ Michael   Jul 16, 2014 ]
    • It does have a dedicated rear view camera input. It will automatically switch to camera when placed in reverse if it is wired correctly. It will then switch to radio, nav, etc when placed in drive. I did not personal install mine, but I think different models requires different wiring. There is a trigger wire that must be wired in for it to switch. You can probably find info on this on the internet for the make of vehicle you are installing it in. I installed mine in a Nissan Frontier and that is how we got the info. Hope this helps & good luck. [ Clyde   Jul 16, 2014 ]
    • Yes and it works well as long at you have the radio connected to the reverse connection supplied by the vehicle. [ Jeffery   Jul 16, 2014 ]
    • Yes. It has a dedicated input for the rear view camera which works with the reverse gear and it also has another camera input in addition which you can select from the touch screen. [ AMER   Jul 16, 2014 ]

    • It does. you need to wire the reverse signal in, it will turn on automatically when you put in reverse. [ Hai Heng   Jul 16, 2014 ]
    • Yes, it does. I bought a camera, connected it to a power source, plugged it into the RCA jack labeled "camera" and it worked as soon as I put the truck in reverse. You can also manually switch to the camera while driving if you want to check something you are towing. Super easy to use with a camera. [ Tim   Jul 16, 2014 ]
    • Yes it has a dedicated rear view camera input, when the reverse trigger is hooked up it changes automatically. [ Errol   Jul 16, 2014 ]
