Our take on the Kenwood KFC-1665S

by Alexander Hrabe
Kenwood

Why replace your car's original speakers?

The speakers that originally came in your car were made from inexpensive materials, designed to create acceptable sound at the lowest possible cost to the manufacturer. If you love music, you deserve better. Name-brand aftermarket speakers deliver fuller, richer sound with considerably more detail and nuance, and they're capable of playing louder and cleaner than factory speakers. Connect new speakers to your factory radio and you'll get the best possible sound from your dealer-equipped system. Pair them up with a new car stereo for a level of enjoyment that can rival a high-fidelity home audio experience.

6.5" coaxials

Upgrade on a budget

So, you're finally ready to do something about your ragged factory speakers. The beauty of Kenwood's Sport Series speakers is that you can seriously improve your sound without breaking the bank.

Sweet sound

The KFC-1665S 6-1/2" 2-way speakers feature polypropylene cones that will enrich your music with all the midbass and midrange details, while the 1" balanced-dome tweeters will make high notes soar. Kenwood also includes sharp-looking grilles in case you're doing a custom installation in your vehicle. Finally, you can enjoy your music the way it was meant to be heard, with clarity and emotion.

Features

Tweeters: Each speaker has a 1" PEI balanced dome tweeter. A semi-dome tweeter has a dome placed inside a cone. Balanced dome tweeters are semi-dome tweeters with equal reproduction area given the cone and dome portions of the tweeter. PEI (Poly-Ether-Imide) is a polymer film that produces a wide soundstage for superior imaging.

Mounting: The speaker basket has multiple mounting holes and is designed to fit a standard 3-hole 6-1/2" application, Ford's 4-hole 6-1/2" application, and a standard 4-hole 6-3/4" application. (When mounting in a 6-3/4" application, use a speaker baffle to seal the inner ring of screw holes.)

Stock speakers sound better

Written By Mike C, Jupiter,FL on Thursday, September 25, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed these and also the KFC-1365S speakers in my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee with Infinity sound system, because my drivers door speaker had blown and they were 14 years old. Big mistake ! My stock speakers sounded at least twice as good as these. These had no Bass or volume and sounded tinny. If I put these up more than half way, they distorted. I called customer service. It seems that the Infinity sound system produces more power than these speakers can handle. I told them I wanted to return these, put my stock rear speakers back in and replace the 2 front door speakers with something that would work. They suggested the Kicker 41KSC6946 6X9. I ordered these and can't wait to install them. They cost triple the price, but I guess in this case you get what you pay for. The magnet on my stock speakers was much bigger than these. I guess they are o.k. for someone that has a stock low power deck that they are not upgrading.
Pros:
cost !
Cons:
can't handle power, no bass, tinny sound !

Less than expected

Written By danps, LaPorte, IN on Sunday, September 21, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased these to replace OEM speakers in a 1999 Honda Accord. I figured that given the (15 year) age of the car, the stock speakers had probably seen better days and that a new set of speakers would bring some life back into the music. These speakers have a shallow mounting depth that makes them ideal for door mounting or in other locations where space may be limited. The notes on the Crutchfield Website advised that the stock speaker mount would have to be cut to allow these speakers to fit. However, no modification was required and the speaker dropped right in using the (3) mounting screws. I installed the driver's side door speaker first and then tested it along side the factory speaker in the passenger door. To my amazement, the factory speaker on the right channel sounded noticeably better. The bass from the factory speaker was stronger and there was virtually no difference in the high frequency performance. I also had my daughter (who drives the car) do a blind comparison between left and right. She picked the OEM speaker without hesitation. Given the full range (single driver) design of the factory speaker, I expected the 2-way Kenwood would offer a noticeable improvement - at least on the high end. That was not the case. Maybe these speakers respond better with more power than the factory stereo provides. Given the lackluster performance, I opted to return these for a refund. Thanks to Crutchfield for a simple return process.
Pros:
Low price and decent construction quality -- speakers seem to be well made. Shallow mounting depth allows installation in tight spaces. Low cost option for replacement of worn out or damaged speakers.
Cons:
Lackluster sound quality for an aftermarket speaker - even for the budget price.

For the price, these are fantastic! Give them a couple of weeks to break in before you listen too critically. They really open up nicely.
Pros:
Good volume levels and bass.
Cons:
A little tight at first, they need a couple of weeks to loosen up.

Not an upgrade but inexpensive replacement

Written By Allen, Millington, TN. on Saturday, September 13, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you are looking for an upgrade to your system you are going to have to spend more money then this. If you are looking at replaceing a none working speaker on the cheap then these are hard to beat. Used these to replace two none working door speakers in the back of a trailblazer of my daughters. Fit with no adapters and with the GM plugs you get with them through Crutchfield it was the easiest install I've done.
Pros:
They make sounds....which is better then no sounds.
Cons:
Don't try to push these with a high power amp. They aren't ment for that. Remember they are entry level speakers.

Decent Value for the Money

Written By Leadsled Coupe, Greeneville, TN on Monday, September 08, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Speakers installed easily with Crutchfield connectors. That was wonderful. The sound out of the speakers however doesn't rate the same. They are acceptable but nothing like the pair Infinity Reference 6.5" speakers I installed at the same time in our Grand Cherokee (factory head unit). Honestly, I wish I'd spent a little more and installed all four of the same.
Pros:
Price, Crutchfield instructions and connectors!
Cons:
Performance (ok for price spent)

Installed in a 2008 Silverado extended cab for all 4 doors. Factory speakers quit working and these sound much better than the factory ones. Obviously not the best you can get. but at this price you can't go wrong. The installation was easy , especially with the harnesses and adapters. No adapters for the back doors but you can modify the existing factory ones to make the new speakers fit. There are instructions that can be found online regarding how to install both front and rear doors.

Purchased as replacements for door speakers in a 2007 Avalanche. Good sound but I do wish I had followed their recommendation and included baffles in the installation. The bass is a little lost without them and although they sound infinitely better than the stock ones, the also do not seem quite as loud.
Pros:
Fine sounding additions
Cons:
Need baffles for optimum performance

Great for Price

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers are a great deal. I bought them to replace the stock speakers in the doors and rear panels of a 2000 Chevy Blazer. They sound pretty dang good. I was slightly disappointed with the bass from them, as I was expecting a little more since they can handle such high wattage. Highs and mids are excellent, and I'd highly recommend these for anybody looking to replace their stock speakers on a low budget. they fit perfect in that Blazer, not even needing adapters for the front speakers. Wish I had put 6x9's in the rear though. Speakers and grills look great, even though we didn't use the grills.
Pros:
Perfect fit, good looking, good high and mid
Cons:
weak lows

Great Bargain Speakers

Written By Tim, Killeen, TX on Saturday, August 23, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When you purchase these speakers, you must remember what you are getting. These are not a $500 pair of speakers. This is (or was when I purchased them) the cheapest pair of speakers available for my car from Crutchfield. Don't expect them to sound like Rockford Fosgates, because that's simply not what they are.

That having been said, these speakers are great for what they are. They provide a definite upgrade from your average stock speaker. I put these in my 2006 Spectra and received a noticeable improvement in bass, mids, and a little in the highs. My stock speakers were a pretty decent set of polypropylenes, but the Kenwoods provided more clarity and volume. If you are looking for a simple and affordable upgrade over stock, this definitely fits the bill.
Pros:
Price is right Clarity Decent volume

The speakers installed easy and work well, there is a little rattle with the bass turned up, but, i'm sure it is more to do with my stock head unit, than the speakers, but still, none the less a little annoying, but for the price, it's a great deal
Pros:
price, sound better than stock
Cons:
they don't live up to their full potential with stock units, unless you have a specialized stock system from the factory, that might work better.

rear doors, 2013 Jetta Sportwagen

Written By 2013 JSW, NE, Ohio on Thursday, August 14, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I give the speakers a 3-1/2 rating as they are at least better than the OE speakers and they were low cost. I give Crutchfield 2 stars on this purchase because of problems with the installation. The smaller of the two terminals in the included jumper cable did not fit the blade on the new speaker. I had to remove the terminal from the connector and tighten it myself. Also, the speaker bracket supplied by Crutchfield uses very small screws to attach the new speakers to it. I am not sure how they will hold up over the long haul. Lastly, the instructions were woefully lacking in any kind of detail for my specific application. Crutchfield needs to do a better job in understanding as many car installs as they can, especially when they claim the speakers fit my car. My Sportwagen isn't that unique. Crutchfield did forward my complaint to their installation crew for review.
Pros:
low cost speakers, decent sound
Cons:
weak installation instructions for my vehicle and problems with included jumper cable and speaker bracket

OK speakers

Written By Chris B, Little Rock, AR on Wednesday, August 13, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are a massive improvement over Toyota's horrible, no, criminally horrible, base-model stock system, which was only suitable for listening to the giggling of stupid radio DJ's to begin with. However I'm picky enough that I now sort of wish I had gone all the way and bought more expensive speakers. These just don't have the spark I was hoping to achieve. I suppose I can't gripe too much for the price, but my advice to you is to consider spending twice as much for 5-10% better sound. I haven't spent a ton of time dialing in my settings, but I can tell these are mid-range speakers.
Pros:
-Crutchfield includes foolproof wiring connectors. Caution: you may bend your door plastic, leaving an ugly stretch mark, if you position the connectors in a spot where there isn't enough clearance.
Cons:
-no sealing foam on the front or back of the speakers. I installed these in my car doors and immediately noticed a big increase in road noise. I added some self-adhesive, low density weatherstripping foam around the perimeter of the face and the road noise went back to normal. -These speakers lack the punch, clarity, tone, and musicality of my friend's Infinities. I wonder if I'd be a lot happier if I had just spent $60 more.

Good for mids and highs...horrible for lows

Written By GV, Miami Florida on Tuesday, August 05, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers did not meet my expectations. My factory speakers provided a more complete sound. These Kenwoods do not deliver low signals and starts distorting at very low volume. I have a nice Pioneer head unit that powered my factories very well. I was not expecting subwoofer performance, but at the very least better performance than my paper speakers. The mids and highs were clear and well defined. The magnets were smaller than my factory speakers. I ended up adding a subwoofer to better the sound. I had to filter out the low frequencies on these speakers to prevent distortion. That did the trick and now I have a complete audio system. So, if you buy them think about getting some sort of sub to handle the bass.
Pros:
Price
Cons:
Poor performance at low frequencies.

I'm not impressed with the sound. I thought these would rival the factory dual cone speakers but I was wrong. The bass is shallow and muddy; the highs are not clean and the mids are about equal to the factory speakers. Glad they were about half price with the purchase of the head unit because they are not worth full price. If no stars were an option, I would have given them that.
Pros:
Nothing
Cons:
Everything

Kenwood KFC-1665S

Written By Art, Andrews, Indiana on Wednesday, July 30, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought two front speakers for my Saturn Vue hoping it would enrich the sound coming from a basic factory installed stereo. The speakers were fairly easy to install after I figured out how to remove the inner door panel. I hoped it would be better but there is really no appreciable improvement in sound quality. The rear factory installed speakers are much louder than the front now and the front speakers sound fine but I may have been better off leaving the factory speakers in. I was probably expecting more because I assumed that, like the Crutchfield site suggests, it would be an upgrade. It wasn't. I replaced the front with the plan of replacing the rear speakers if I could detect an improvement in sound. After what I know now I won't replace them since they are louder and just as clear.
Pros:
Easy to install
Cons:
Sound wasn't any better quality than factory speakers.

Exactly what you paid for...

Written By ScottB, Magnolia,DE on Saturday, July 26, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Read a lot of the negative reviews and I'm confused as to what people thought they were buying for this price.... These are excellent value (budget) replacement speakers for OEM equipment! They are NOT some super fancy upgrade where you should expect to get the same sound as a $200 set of speakers! They come super fast with shipping and have all the necessary installation parts and instructions included...I did, however, have to do a small amount of fabrication on the adaptor plate to mount the speakers. Otherwise, you can't go wrong with these speakers if you're looking to replace old, damaged OEM speakers that have decent sound. If you think you're getting speakers with kick-ass bass and Pioneer or Blaupunkt, etc. quality I'll save you some effort, time, and suspense....YOU'RE NOT!
Pros:
excellent price, super-fast shipping, and a good quality replacement for OEM speakers
Cons:
some fabrication needed but comes with what you need to make it work

I wish I wouldnt have

Written By TheHuth, Long Beach, CA on Thursday, July 24, 2014

I decided to replace my factory speakers in a Toyota RAV4. Surely any aftermarket speaker would sound better. Not in this case. These speakers cant hold a candle to the factory speaker. But, I had to drill out the old ones, so they're done forever. Looks like I'll have to buy something better.
Pros:
None
Cons:
Dissapointing sound quality

Replacements for a 01 Chevy Silverado 4 door. I was looking for the largest/cheapest I could get. The factory ones rotted out. After a week I am happy with them. Only have the factory radio but they do fine by me. Pulling the door panels is easy if you are worried about it.
Pros:
The sound for the price is ok by me
Cons:
install instructions are so so.. I pulled up some You tube videos on pulling the door panel.

Good replacement for factory speakers

Written By Allibaby, USA on Monday, July 21, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The factory speakers in our '99 Silverado had gone bad so we purchased these as a replacement. We even called Crutchfield with an installation question on a Sunday and they were able to help; that was a nice option to have. The speakers are more than adequate for replacing factory speakers and the value was good.
Pros:
Good value for a decent sound

just what my Toyhauler needed

Written By MarkS, Albany, Oregon on Sunday, July 20, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My toyhauler (Keystone) came with a nice Kenwood stereo head unit, nothing expensive, but nice...but they installed cheap chinese speakers with heavy metal round grilles like we had to use back when we had 4 track tape players under the dash. These speakers are light years ahead of those in looks, they match the head unit and provide a more unified look and since I'm just using the head unit's power, they work well with the available power.
Pros:
easy 4 screw mounting to any surface, even the face of my rv cabinetry, price with freight, Crutchfield will always be there with support and quality products at a reasonable price, I've been a customer for 20 years and never buy car audio anywhere else. If I lived in Virginia I'd work for them.
Cons:
never had a con with Crutchfield in 20 years of buying car audio

These speakers are great and the price is right. Easy to install. I have a 2006 Chevy Colorado crew cab. Only needed to drill four holes for the front speakers, got them installed in about 20 minutes, start to finish. The rear speakers were easier than that. Very happy with the product.
Pros:
Easy install, sounds better than my blown speakers.
Cons:
Not quite as loud as I would have liked but for the price they are great.

Whent from factory speakers in a 2005 Honda civic . And am very happy with the quality. Obviously they are not going to blow people away seeing how they cost less than my video games. But are defiantly worth the by for me
Pros:
Very clear sound with no rattling and very easy to install . Work perfect with my kenwood receiver .
Cons:
Can't really think of any since my bass will be coming from my subwoofers when I can get some.

I spent hours installing these four speakers in my 02 tundra access cab with dynamat and an eclipse avn 52d headunit. These speakers lack highs and lows. I removed them minute after installation was complete. I was extremely disappointed with the sound quality
Pros:
None
Cons:
Factory speakers in my 02 tundra access cab were better in all areas. Highs, lows and clarity. These speakers aren't worth the buy

First Kenwood purchase

Written By Rick, Wilmington, NC on Friday, July 11, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love Crutchfield but I do not love these speakers. I bought the KFC-1665S because of all the great reviews and once I put them in I was disappointed. I hate sending anything back but these speakers were awful, the stock speakers sounded better and louder. While removing the speakers from the vehicle I noticed how small the magnets were and it absolutely shocked me. The stock speakers had bigger magnets. I wish I would have noticed it in the pictures on the website before I purchased them, they are tiny. Compare the size of the magnets on these speakers to any of the other speakers on the website. Having grown up in an electronics store, I can honestly say that I don't ever remember seeing speaker magnets this small that didn't come out of a tv. Incredible! Kenwood should be ashamed to put their name on these speakers, I would. Maybe the upgraded Kenwood speakers are better but I think I'll stick with Pioneer or Infinity.
Pros:
None
Cons:
They do not sound good nor do they get loud. They are just cheap inferior speakers, ie Junk

Snap, crackle, and pop are only good for breakfast cereal

Written By Bobb G, Houston, Tx on Monday, June 30, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These seem like decent speakers, except one has an annoying crackle sound every so often, like there's too much midrange going into the tweeter. The one that doesn't do this sounds ok, not sure if I'll return but leaning towards that. I'm sure they sound fine without the annoying crackle. Kenwood used to put out really quality speakers, wonder what happened...
Pros:
Nothing I can think of at the moment
Cons:
Crackling sound

A lot of folks seem to have unrealistic expectations regarding the amount of bass that is possible from a two way speaker of this size. Paired with a set of Kenwood 6x9's in the stock location in my Pathfinder rhe sound was light years better than stock. The lady that helped me on the phone suggested these and was spot on. Good sound, clear crisp highs, reasonable bass. And for the price an excellent deal
