Our take on the Kenwood KFC-1665S

by Alexander Hrabe
Kenwood

Why replace your car's original speakers?

The speakers that originally came in your car were made from inexpensive materials, designed to create acceptable sound at the lowest possible cost to the manufacturer. If you love music, you deserve better. Name-brand aftermarket speakers deliver fuller, richer sound with considerably more detail and nuance, and they're capable of playing louder and cleaner than factory speakers. Connect new speakers to your factory radio and you'll get the best possible sound from your dealer-equipped system. Pair them up with a new car stereo for a level of enjoyment that can rival a high-fidelity home audio experience.

6.5" coaxials

Upgrade on a budget

So, you're finally ready to do something about your ragged factory speakers. The beauty of Kenwood's Sport Series speakers is that you can seriously improve your sound without breaking the bank.

Sweet sound

The KFC-1665S 6-1/2" 2-way speakers feature polypropylene cones that will enrich your music with all the midbass and midrange details, while the 1" balanced-dome tweeters will make high notes soar. Kenwood also includes sharp-looking grilles in case you're doing a custom installation in your vehicle. Finally, you can enjoy your music the way it was meant to be heard, with clarity and emotion.

Features

Tweeters: Each speaker has a 1" PEI balanced dome tweeter. A semi-dome tweeter has a dome placed inside a cone. Balanced dome tweeters are semi-dome tweeters with equal reproduction area given the cone and dome portions of the tweeter. PEI (Poly-Ether-Imide) is a polymer film that produces a wide soundstage for superior imaging.

Mounting: The speaker basket has multiple mounting holes and is designed to fit a standard 3-hole 6-1/2" application, Ford's 4-hole 6-1/2" application, and a standard 4-hole 6-3/4" application. (When mounting in a 6-3/4" application, use a speaker baffle to seal the inner ring of screw holes.)

rear doors, 2013 Jetta Sportwagen

Written By 2013 JSW, NE, Ohio on Thursday, August 14, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I give the speakers a 3-1/2 rating as they are at least better than the OE speakers and they were low cost. I give Crutchfield 2 stars on this purchase because of problems with the installation. The smaller of the two terminals in the included jumper cable did not fit the blade on the new speaker. I had to remove the terminal from the connector and tighten it myself. Also, the speaker bracket supplied by Crutchfield uses very small screws to attach the new speakers to it. I am not sure how they will hold up over the long haul. Lastly, the instructions were woefully lacking in any kind of detail for my specific application. Crutchfield needs to do a better job in understanding as many car installs as they can, especially when they claim the speakers fit my car. My Sportwagen isn't that unique. Crutchfield did forward my complaint to their installation crew for review.
Pros:
low cost speakers, decent sound
Cons:
weak installation instructions for my vehicle and problems with included jumper cable and speaker bracket

OK speakers

Written By Chris B, Little Rock, AR on Wednesday, August 13, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are a massive improvement over Toyota's horrible, no, criminally horrible, base-model stock system, which was only suitable for listening to the giggling of stupid radio DJ's to begin with. However I'm picky enough that I now sort of wish I had gone all the way and bought more expensive speakers. These just don't have the spark I was hoping to achieve. I suppose I can't gripe too much for the price, but my advice to you is to consider spending twice as much for 5-10% better sound. I haven't spent a ton of time dialing in my settings, but I can tell these are mid-range speakers.
Pros:
-Crutchfield includes foolproof wiring connectors. Caution: you may bend your door plastic, leaving an ugly stretch mark, if you position the connectors in a spot where there isn't enough clearance.
Cons:
-no sealing foam on the front or back of the speakers. I installed these in my car doors and immediately noticed a big increase in road noise. I added some self-adhesive, low density weatherstripping foam around the perimeter of the face and the road noise went back to normal. -These speakers lack the punch, clarity, tone, and musicality of my friend's Infinities. I wonder if I'd be a lot happier if I had just spent $60 more.

I have a 1990 Honda Accord that I use as a daily driver/work car. I bought these speakers to replace the stock ones in the car. Even with the stock radio they sound much better than I figured they would. They were direct replacements as well. For the money they are perfect for my needs.
Pros:
Direct replacement, no mods were required to install.
Cons:

Got just what I was expecting. I know these aren't top of the line speakers, they are a pretty good improvement over the factory speakers on my 2007 Kia Spectra5. I had a blown speaker and needed an affordable, easy replacement, and these fit that role perfectly. And super fast shipping from Crutchfield too.

Good for mids and highs...horrible for lows

Written By GV, Miami Florida on Tuesday, August 05, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers did not meet my expectations. My factory speakers provided a more complete sound. These Kenwoods do not deliver low signals and starts distorting at very low volume. I have a nice Pioneer head unit that powered my factories very well. I was not expecting subwoofer performance, but at the very least better performance than my paper speakers. The mids and highs were clear and well defined. The magnets were smaller than my factory speakers. I ended up adding a subwoofer to better the sound. I had to filter out the low frequencies on these speakers to prevent distortion. That did the trick and now I have a complete audio system. So, if you buy them think about getting some sort of sub to handle the bass.
Pros:
Price
Cons:
Poor performance at low frequencies.

Kenwood KFC- 1665s disappoints!

Written By toolguy1964, Northern California on Friday, August 01, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm not impressed with the sound. I thought these would rival the factory dual cone speakers but I was wrong. The bass is shallow and muddy; the highs are not clean and the mids are about equal to the factory speakers. Glad they were about half price with the purchase of the head unit because they are not worth full price. If no stars were an option, I would have given them that.
Pros:
Nothing
Cons:
Everything

Kenwood KFC-1665S

Written By Art, Andrews, Indiana on Wednesday, July 30, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought two front speakers for my Saturn Vue hoping it would enrich the sound coming from a basic factory installed stereo. The speakers were fairly easy to install after I figured out how to remove the inner door panel. I hoped it would be better but there is really no appreciable improvement in sound quality. The rear factory installed speakers are much louder than the front now and the front speakers sound fine but I may have been better off leaving the factory speakers in. I was probably expecting more because I assumed that, like the Crutchfield site suggests, it would be an upgrade. It wasn't. I replaced the front with the plan of replacing the rear speakers if I could detect an improvement in sound. After what I know now I won't replace them since they are louder and just as clear.
Pros:
Easy to install
Cons:
Sound wasn't any better quality than factory speakers.

Exactly what you paid for...

Written By ScottB, Magnolia,DE on Saturday, July 26, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Read a lot of the negative reviews and I'm confused as to what people thought they were buying for this price.... These are excellent value (budget) replacement speakers for OEM equipment! They are NOT some super fancy upgrade where you should expect to get the same sound as a $200 set of speakers! They come super fast with shipping and have all the necessary installation parts and instructions included...I did, however, have to do a small amount of fabrication on the adaptor plate to mount the speakers. Otherwise, you can't go wrong with these speakers if you're looking to replace old, damaged OEM speakers that have decent sound. If you think you're getting speakers with kick-ass bass and Pioneer or Blaupunkt, etc. quality I'll save you some effort, time, and suspense....YOU'RE NOT!
Pros:
excellent price, super-fast shipping, and a good quality replacement for OEM speakers
Cons:
some fabrication needed but comes with what you need to make it work

I decided to replace my factory speakers in a Toyota RAV4. Surely any aftermarket speaker would sound better. Not in this case. These speakers cant hold a candle to the factory speaker. But, I had to drill out the old ones, so they're done forever. Looks like I'll have to buy something better.

Replacements for a 01 Chevy Silverado 4 door. I was looking for the largest/cheapest I could get. The factory ones rotted out. After a week I am happy with them. Only have the factory radio but they do fine by me. Pulling the door panels is easy if you are worried about it.
Pros:

Cons:
install instructions are so so.. I pulled up some You tube videos on pulling the door panel.

The factory speakers in our '99 Silverado had gone bad so we purchased these as a replacement. We even called Crutchfield with an installation question on a Sunday and they were able to help; that was a nice option to have. The speakers are more than adequate for replacing factory speakers and the value was good.
Pros:

just what my Toyhauler needed

Written By MarkS, Albany, Oregon on Sunday, July 20, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My toyhauler (Keystone) came with a nice Kenwood stereo head unit, nothing expensive, but nice...but they installed cheap chinese speakers with heavy metal round grilles like we had to use back when we had 4 track tape players under the dash. These speakers are light years ahead of those in looks, they match the head unit and provide a more unified look and since I'm just using the head unit's power, they work well with the available power.
Pros:
easy 4 screw mounting to any surface, even the face of my rv cabinetry, price with freight, Crutchfield will always be there with support and quality products at a reasonable price, I've been a customer for 20 years and never buy car audio anywhere else. If I lived in Virginia I'd work for them.

never had a con with Crutchfield in 20 years of buying car audio

Cons:

First Kenwood purchase

Written By Rick, Wilmington, NC on Friday, July 11, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love Crutchfield but I do not love these speakers. I bought the KFC-1665S because of all the great reviews and once I put them in I was disappointed. I hate sending anything back but these speakers were awful, the stock speakers sounded better and louder. While removing the speakers from the vehicle I noticed how small the magnets were and it absolutely shocked me. The stock speakers had bigger magnets. I wish I would have noticed it in the pictures on the website before I purchased them, they are tiny. Compare the size of the magnets on these speakers to any of the other speakers on the website. Having grown up in an electronics store, I can honestly say that I don't ever remember seeing speaker magnets this small that didn't come out of a tv. Incredible! Kenwood should be ashamed to put their name on these speakers, I would. Maybe the upgraded Kenwood speakers are better but I think I'll stick with Pioneer or Infinity.
Pros:
None
Cons:
They do not sound good nor do they get loud. They are just cheap inferior speakers, ie Junk

These seem like decent speakers, except one has an annoying crackle sound every so often, like there's too much midrange going into the tweeter. The one that doesn't do this sounds ok, not sure if I'll return but leaning towards that. I'm sure they sound fine without the annoying crackle. Kenwood used to put out really quality speakers, wonder what happened...
Pros:
Nothing I can think of at the moment
Cons:
Crackling sound

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A lot of folks seem to have unrealistic expectations regarding the amount of bass that is possible from a two way speaker of this size. Paired with a set of Kenwood 6x9's in the stock location in my Pathfinder rhe sound was light years better than stock. The lady that helped me on the phone suggested these and was spot on. Good sound, clear crisp highs, reasonable bass. And for the price an excellent deal
Pros:
Good sound good price
Cons:
A bit of a pain to install with the adapter sent

2005 Kia Spectra EX Factory Speaker Replacement

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall the speakers are good. They are better than the factory speakers for sure and were a good value for the money. I paired them with my Kenwood head unit and am satisfied with the sound.
Pros:
Good value from a good brand. Easy plug and play installation.
Cons:
Better sound quality than factory but not as good as I had hope for. Bass from speakers lacks some while mid range and high range are good.

I purchased a set of these for my Jeep along with an Alpine Head unit. I put these in the rear doors of the Liberty.and a set of Kenwood KFC-1668s I had setting around new in the box purchased previously for another vehicle but never installed before it was sold off. These sound great and produce better more crisp highs than the stock premium Infinity speakers my Jeep came with. For the price, they are great speakers.
Pros:
low price good sound for the money

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sound for the money! Much better than factory speakers. I also installed foam baffles to protect from weather.
Pros:
Fits great with bracket installation kit 82-3002 with only minor changes.
Cons:
I also received installation bracket kit 142 SAC656, a little too much work involved. Kit 82-3002 works best, most like original speaker bracket in front and back doors of a 2007 crew cab 4 door truck.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought these speakers as stock replacement for a 02 Durango. Installation went quick due to the info sheets on door panel removal and speaker installation. Being a novice at car audio I was a little nervous but that soon disapated once I knew I was supplied with everything to get the job done right. The speakers sound way better than the stock ones since all four were blown. The sound isn't premium, but I wasn't expecting that for the price I paid. Overall a good sound for the price.
Pros:
Easy installation, decent sound and a great price.
Cons:
None so far.

Great Factory Replacement Speakers

Written By SammyB, Durango, CO on Thursday, May 29, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For $40 you probably won't find better replacements for your factory speakers. Thanks to Crutchfield's research and included mounting hardware, these 6 1/2" speakers from Kenwood took me about 45 minutes start to finish to install in the front door panels of my 2002 1/2 ton Silverado. They were instantly much crisper and cleaner than my old factory units (even while still paired with the factory radio) and have a surprisingly good frequency response for a 6 1/2" cone, beating the response range from a number of more expensive units. As always my Crutchfield order arrived on time and this time even sooner than I expected! All in all a great buy!
Pros:
Crisp, clean sound. A definite upgrade over the factory parts bin stuff. Good frequency response for a small cone. Super quick and easy install.
Cons:
None

Replaced 2001 Silverado speakers

Written By Tony, Watkins Glen on Tuesday, May 27, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A really good quality and economical replacement for the factory "cardboard" type speakers that came with the truck.
Pros:
So easy to install, it only took me 20 minutes to do both doors. The hardest part about the whole job is getting to the speakers but I had practice when I replaced the window regulators last fall. The wiring harness and mounting bracket/adapters that Crutchfield included with my purchase made it that much simpler. Simple and painless!
Cons:
No Cons! In fact, the directions stated that some new holes may need to be drilled and that was not the case. All parts fell right into place.

These are ok speakers. If you're looking for a cheap replacement pair, these will suit you just fine. If you're looking for any form of bass look elsewhere.

But I only paid 40$ for them so what could I really have expected?

Cons:

Well for price I didn't expect a lot. I was pleasantly suprised.. Ok these aren't $300 component speakers but for the money they deliver a decent basss response and highs the are very crisp. I listen to a wide range of music and everything from Marley to Wallflowers, REM, To Norah Jones and Herbie Mann sounded great. They fit perfectly in my 02 Outback and the included Subaru specific speaker harnes was spot on. Once again Crutchfield Nailed it!
Pros:
Decent Base Response Ease of installation Clean highs very full sounding speaker for the money
Cons:
None that I encountered.

Don't fall for the hype

Written By Ramo, Florida on Monday, May 12, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these speakers based on the manufacturer's specifications, and user reviews. My stock speakers surround material dry rotted. I installed these speakers with a high expectation, instead all they sounded shallow, flat, and tinny. These speakers have a high sensitivity rating of 92 dB, but yet they don't come even close to the efficiency and loudness of the stock speakers. You have to crank the stereo up to get an equal sound pressure level but even with that there's just something missing. Even with their surround material damaged, the stock speakers still managed to produce deep rich bass notes, these speakers completely lack any bass, even though the specifications claim that they produce notes down to 35Hz.
Pros:
Inexpensive
Cons:
Tinny sound, not as efficient as stock speakers, NO BASS or even a hint of it, sound flat, very cheaply made, very shallow, tiny magnet, doubtful of the wattage rating

Good for the money

Written By Steve, Seattle, WA on Friday, May 09, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Some of the negative reviews worried me before I ordered these speakers. Fortunately, they were better than what some of the negative reviews described. They are not as good as some of the other components that I've previously owned but they are a huge upgrade over stock. They don't have much bass at low volume and will distort on heavy bass when you crank them up, but what do you expect for low cost speakers? It's a huge upgrade over the stock paper speakers and well worth it. If you want a higher end speaker, these aren't for you.
Pros:
Great upgrade over stock paper speakers Good value Decent mids and highs Good entry level speaker
Cons:
Not much bass at low volume Can distort at high volume

Great price and Amazingly fast shipping! The installation instructions were right on the money, Came with the correct connectors making it plug and play. Had to cut the clips on the inside of the bracket to fit the 61/2 speakers, They are there to fit the smaller speakers snug. My first install and Crutchfield made it easy.
Pros:
Price, Shipping, Instructions and plug in harness, ease of installation and great sound.
Cons:

Written By Anonymous, Harrison, ME on Monday, May 05, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers were an excellent replacement for the factory door speakers in my 2003 impala and sound much clearer and produce much more accurate sound. The only bad thing was that the mounting hardware and wiring harnesses that came free were not actually required for installation, but overall the speakers perform excellently for being the least expensive pair of 6 1/2" speakers available.
Pros:
These speakers can be pretty loud and keep their extreme clarity and precise mid-bass.
Cons:
They are shallower than i had expected so the bass does not hit as hard as i would like but were still worth it.
