Kenwood KDC-BT555U

The KDC-BT555U works with your iPhone or Android for Internet radio access.

The advantage of Bluetooth

This Kenwood's built-in Bluetooth also frees up your hands and attention when you take a call — and pairing your phone is easier and faster than ever, thanks to Simple Secure Pairing. Connect an iPhone equipped with Siri to the receiver, and you can use voice commands to look up and dial numbers without lifting a finger. Plus, you can stream audio from any smartphone source to the receiver without the clutter of wires.

Command your digital music libraries

If you're replacing your factory radio, you'll notice a big improvement in sound quality, courtesy of this Kenwood's 24-bit digital-to-analog converter and its robust built-in amplifier. You'll also be impressed by the user-friendly controls — plug your iPod® into the receiver's front-panel USB input, and you'll be flicking through your albums, artists, and playlists in a few seconds. If you've got lots of music on your iPod, you'll love the dedicated "Search" and "Return" keys that simplify your search when you want to hear a particular song or album.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Kenwood stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and this Kenwood, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

And then the radio is so loud it scares me half to death! My family got this for me to listen to podcasts, presentations, books, etc. during commute but I struggle with the volume level from any of my devices.

Just can't get my ipod loud enough

    wendy from Kansas on 12/2/2014

And then the radio is so loud it scares me half to death! My family got this for me to listen to podcasts, presentations, books, etc. during commute but I struggle with the volume level from any of my devices.

Pros: Changing colors is fun and can be a giant mood ring! Hands free works well. Bluetooth has paired easily with multiple devices. We have bought multiple radios/players from Crutchfield and they always are easy to choose by catalog or website are a great value, and arrive promptly.

Cons: As others have said not very intuitive. I still have to cycle thru a few settings each time because I can't remember how to set channels. Nothing I can't live with if I could just get the whole sound thing figured out.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've always been a fan of Kenwood products and the features of this model along with the great price are hard to beat. I purchased this for my 16 year old son who was using a very poor excuse for an FM transmitter to listen to music from his iPHONE. The Bluetooth capabilities along with the ability for him to control his iPHONE from the radio makes me more comfortable with him talking on his phone since its now virtually hands free. Great radio and Crutchfields installation kit with instructions made the swap easy.

Pros: Bluetooth, iPHONE controler, Pandora controler. Hands free operation.

    Great Unit

Phil from Rochester, NY on 1/5/2014

    2006 Ford Escape
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great little unit. Replaced factory radio in a 2006 Ford Escape. Dropped right in (I used the ISO Din option with the supplied mounting kit) and had tunes in no time. Menus are easy to navigate, though I did have the manual open for the initial set-up. Bluetooth works great, I located the microphone in the center of the dash above the radio and it picks up my voice with no problems. With BT Audio on and my phone on music player I can skip forward and back tracks in my library and the unit even controls Pandora. Both work better than I expected. There is an app you can install on your Android phone (I have a Galaxy S4) from Kenwood, and it did a great job finding all the music on my phone. I hangs on songs during playback. I stick with the Android music player and everything is fine, including the unit displaying the track info. Pandora works great, but I have not figured out how to change stations. I can skip tracks fine, thumbs-up or thumbs-down a track and scroll through song info just fine. I highly recommend this unit to anyone looking for a nice upgrade to a factory system. I don't think it is something I would compete in IASCA with, but for a decent upgrade with ease of use, decent power and great features this thing is a bargain indeed!

Pros: Great looking Easy to use / easy to set-up Pandora control through BT Music library control though BT Mic for phone works great and everyone says it does a good job at noise cancelling

Cons: Kenwood Android app doesn't seem to work (though Android music player works great) Can't change stations on Pandora, but does everything else on Pandora just fine

    Good sounding unit

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Unit sounds good with OEM speakers. Controls are a bit complex and takes some getting used to. Bluetooth connectionwwith IPhone 5 was flawless and easy.

Pros: Good sound and functions perfectly.

Cons: A bit complex to use at first... A simple button for the common function would make this a great unit right out of the box!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the first time with my purchases with you, Crutchfield had limited information about installation in a 2007 Hyundai Sonata. They were very honest about this but were quite sure it would fit. And they were right. Did not even have to re-do the wiring. The Hyundai came with a Kenwood from the factory and the plug matched. Wanted this unit for the hands free bluetooth. No problems. easy install and works great!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I drive about 40k miles a year. When the existing Sony stereo in my Toyota Matrix started to fail, I started to research stereos that had Bluetooth capability for phone use. Using Crutchfield was a no-brainer, they have great prices and outstanding customer service. As to the Kenwood stereo, installation was a breeze, including hiding the mic just above the rearview mirror. Great features and sound, and the bluetooth feature for phone use is fantastic. It was easy to setup for the primary phone. Still haven't figured out how to set my wife's phone up as the secondary. Listening to music or lectures from my iPod touch via the bluetooth is also a big plus. I am loving this stereo. You can get a headache researching all the different stereo options, but I kept coming back to the KDC-BT555U. It had an affordable price, great features, fewer complaints, and fewer issues than other stereos with the features that were of interest to me. The fit and finish were perfect and, with the kit that Crutchfield sent, it looks like a professional install.

Pros: Bluetooth features! Ease of installation. Sound quality.

Cons: The radio reception is fine, but not quite as strong as the stereo it replaced.

Pros: Easy to install, with great support from the Crutchfield folks. Nice sound and excellent Bluetooth connectivity.

Cons: Numbers on the preset buttons are a little difficult to read at a glance, but I am getting used to the feel of them, so this won't be an issue for long I don't think.

I bought this receiver for my daughter's 2005 Honda. The original factory stereo was ok but did not have Bluetooth or USB like the Kenwood. In her state, hands free is required for telephone use by the driver and this completely fits the bill.

Pros: Bluetooth, USB, easy installation, plenty of power output.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was more than I expected. I like the hands free calling, the siriusXM is sweet also (with seperate adapter). And with Pandora controls I find myself constantly switching between all of them, so much variety to listen to. I also like that I can choose a color to match my dash or just let the colors scroll through and enjoy the light show. Crutchfield makes it a great experience to install by throwing in all the items and tools to get the job done with little effort. I didn't have to call them but it's a good feeling knowing they are on standby if I needed them.

Pros: So many features for such a small price!

    Cons: Absolutely none, C'mon, it's a Kenwood.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have been buying from Crutchfield for 20 years and I have never been disappointed with the service and support. I just returned an Axxera AXD 530 because of several things: I didn't like the quality of sound from the hands free phone; The unit was complicated to setup and use; The lighting was too bright and not adjustable. In contrast, the Kenwood KDC BT555U is phenomenal. I couldn't be happier with my purchase. It is very good looking, easy to use and sounds great. Thank you Crutchfield and Kenwood!!!

Pros: Great sound from hands free phone mic; Shows radio station song names; Easy to program and use; The lighting is adjustable.

Cons: The only con is that I have an older vehicle to install it in.

Just finished installing and programming the new unit in a 2005 Chevy Trailblazer. Crutchfield provided the adapters needed for the steering wheel controls and OnStar. It's been about 20 years since I've installed a car stereo, and much has changed since then. Still, the installation was much easier than a feared. The sound quality from this Kenwood unit is fantastic. I anticipate that this will be enjoyed for quite a while.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This has easily been the best audio system I have ever purchased for a vehicle. This is a replacement for the stock radio in my 2005 Suzuki Forenza S. It has a great sound and plenty of power. I was concerned about attempting to install an aftermarket into my Suzuki Forenza, but this was done in less than two hours (the time was due to dash disassemble of the car, nothing to do with stereo installation).

Pros: Great Bluetooth...Pandora, phone calls, and music from any Bluetooth enabled device. My family has all Android systems, and this radio connects without any issues at all. Great Sound. Beautiful Display. No regrets at all.

Cons: Took a little work to install, but that was due to the car not the radio or installation kit.

    2002 Jeep Wrangler
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice unit with tons of features and intuitive controls. Clear, consistent sound at any volume level. The handsfree connection is very clear with no echo, "tunnel" or background noise and is actually superior to the factory unit in my new vehicle. All Bluetooth pairing is simple and provides extremely clear audio. Sub output and controls are a huge plus. Installed in Jeep Wrangler with speaker upgrade, provides clear sound at interstate speeds with top removed. Great bang for the buck in this unit.

Pros: Simple install (thanks Crutchfield) and easy initial setup. Sound is great.

Cons: Some features are quirky (multiple devices paired via Bluetooth) and require some time to get set right. Faceplate doesn't always want to snap into place like it should. "Color" change for unit does not change the display so no matter what color you match to your vehicle's interior lights, the display is bright blue.

Advisor Andy recommended this Kenwood and since I'm an Alpine fan, I was back and forth on the two. Well, after much deliberation I purchased the Kenwood only because of the color adjustment to match my dash lights and the bluetooth. Andy made a good call and I'm tickled after installation and setup. Adjustments are user friendly and sounds excellent.

Pros: Ease of adjustments. Sound can be tailored to your satisfaction. Bluetooth for hands free phone and music

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Note: the remote control broke on the second day, but I was going to discard it anyways and so that fact is disregarded when I review this item. I bought this head unit as the central piece to installing a new sound system in my 05 mk4 Vw Golf. Before I installed the subwoofer I had this unit powering 4 new aftermarket speakers alone and it was a significant improvement over the factory system (which was already good quality, to put it into perspective). Once the sub was added, my expectations were exceeded. This unit can do it all (highly recommended for iPhone5 and up integration), Bluetooth for audio stream and calls (I custom installed mine behind the dash and mounted it coming out of the empty "accessory" button next the hazard button, works great),detailed equalizer and sub output adjustment (virtually eliminating the need to adjust amp settings), still plays CDs (dying feature in modern head units), has convenient buttons to control pandora when connected via USB, but most importantly - the display ambient colors are what sets this unit apart from other units that don't have screens/play DVDs. The color changing of the head units "ambient" colors is absolutely stunning.

Pros: Tech-savy unit Cost Effectiveness High power output Color changing faceplate

Cons: Remote broke next day out of box (I don't use these personally so did not make a difference to me)

Very nice receiver for the price. I did not install with an amp, but this head unit sounds very good in a mid-size car. The Bluetooth synchs very easily, just plan ahead for locating the wired microphone. Microphone has excellent reception. Colors on face change frequently and looks good.

Pros: Sounds good, looks good. Bluetooth synches quickly. Face colors looks cool at night.

Cons: no equalizer, small buttons, hard to do the basic setup (bass, treble, balance, fade, etc).

Got this for my '99 Corvette that I don't drive much. But with a new truck with Bluetooth it became very awkward to use the phone in the vette w/o Bluetooth. The install items that came with the unit are great and whole process, including soldering all the connections took about an hour. The unit that hooks into the original Bose system worked great right out of the box, no adjustments needed. My Ipod works best when I plug it in even though this unit has bt for the ipod. I think having my android phone and the ipod at the same time confuses the unit. Pandora thru the phone works great and the ipod wired does too. Only thing I don't like is that it sometimes takes about 10-15 seconds to come on after you start the car. Seems it has to boot up a bit. Have to make sure you turn volume down before exit or you will be backing out of the garage when it comes BLASTING on.

    Pros: Bluetooth, Pandora, ipod

I installed one of these in my '75 Eldorado and it took some creativity to create an opening in the dash, but it was worth the effort. Connected it to a power amp with two Polk 6*9 speakers , Sound Ordinance powered sub under the front seat and a Magnum amp with 2 10's in the trunk. The car thumps and the HU is very agile and pushes out great signal. The Bluetooth connectivity is a great feature and the quality of the phone is very good. I can talk while driving with the top down and people say it's very clear. This is a great value, so good I bought another one for my son's Grand Cherokee, with four JBL's and a Sound Ordinance sub and it fills the car with great sound with full bass and crisp highs.

Pros: Configuration, Bluetooth, quality sound and overall value.

Great sound quality and volume. I wanted great sound, bluetooth and Iphone compatibility and I got it all for a great value. It has a cool look, but don't expect it to have all the features as their higher units. I have this installed in a convertible, so I didn't want to have anything too fancy, but not generic either, because I like to keep the top down and don't want to attract too much attention. This unit was perfect for my needs! As other reviewers have noted, the interface is quirky and not intutive, so be ready for that. I don't like the fact that it seems to fight Siri when I try to request a song by name, which I like to do to keep my eyes on the road. It would be perfect if I could hit the bluetooth button and give my request, but I'm not sure if that's possible. Overall, you're still getting much more than you're paying for, but don't expect it to be flawless at this pricepoint.

Pros: Crisp. Clear, and Loud enough for my convertible.

Cons: Interface is quirky and not intutive, as others have reported, but at this pricepoint it's still worth it, it just takes time to learn.

    2001 Honda Accord
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Usually works as advertised. Handsfree calling works good. Some obscure setting had to be changed to bluetooth audio streaming played from the rear speakers. When using my iPhone to play music while plugged in and also navigating the unit acts funny sometimes. If I pause the music, but then google maps speaks some directions (which come from the iPhone, not the speakers), then the music resumes playing but from the phone, not the speakers. The only way I've found to fix this is to unplug the phone, play the music, then plug it back in while it's playing. Also, sometimes it will try to speak the directions over bluetooth and play music over the cable and then it just gets all confused and starts playing music from my phone and not my speakers. If I get a call, and then press play/pause to switch to private call (on the phone, not to speakers), that works but when I am done talking, the music resumes on my phone, not over the speakers. Had to disable bluetooth and unplug phone, start music, and plug back in to get it working again.

Cons: Very Bright! I wish I could use a simple shortcut (hold display button?) to dim both the keys and the display instead of having to navigate the menu.

This receiver exceeded my expectations! The install was fairly straightforward. Make sure you select the right wiring harness for your car (I thought mine was a 6-speaker when it was really a non-amplified 4-speaker system so I had to go buy a new harness from another retailer which Crutchfield reimbursed me for!). As far as the actual unit, I'm really pleased. It is easy to navigate around the menus, the Bluetooth quality is superb (and it even includes a little microphone to mount in your car), and I could really tell a difference in sound quality. I definitely recommend this unit; Bluetooth is worth the little extra money in my opinion (HD radio is nice but I'd rather have Bluetooth like with this model).

Pros: Great Bluetooth quality, attractive design, easy install

Cons: Costs a bit more than non-Bluetooth Kenwood units; the face has to be wedged in tightly due to my panels (this can change for everyone's car though).

    Good receiver and good installation

    2000 Mazda Protege
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for a replacement receiver/CD for my 2000 Mazda Protege after the OE CD player broke down. The only "upgrade" I needed was Bluetooth and an auxiliary input; Pandora ready was nice but not necessary. I did not want to pay for what I didn't need, and I wanted ease of installation. At the Crutchfield site, I entered make, model and year of my car and got a list of compatible units. I read the reviews, and made a purchase. Painless. I got the receiver at a very competitive price with all the features I wanted (and more, such as Sirius Sat Radio, and a detachable control/face plate) , but also got free shipping, free installation tools, free adapters, and a free Bluetooth microphone, all extra elsewhere. Although I didn't need it, it was nice to know "tech support" was just an email or phone call away. For the mechanically inclined, installation is a snap, and not so difficult for those who can read and follow directions and use imagination to fill in the gaps. Installation happens in 3 parts: connect KDC-BT55U plug wires to matching color-coded wires on adapter plugs (I used "crimp" connectors because I had them and the tool handy), remove old receiver from car with tools provided, install mounting adapter, if necessary, in opening in car by bending tabs, and connect wiring plugs and slide and "click" into place the KDC. Sounds and looks great. The controls are small because a lot of features are packed into a small space. So much better than OE.

Pros: value features ease of installation quality of sound and receiver/cd detachable face/control plate for anti-theft)

Cons: small controls controls not intuitive to use (but unit has a lot of features packed into a small space) light-weight plastic face/control plate (will it stand the test of time?)

Worked as I expected a Kenwood would. Nice looks, functions are easy to get to and adjust, installation was a breeze. I bought this model because of the Bluetooth functions. Works well for the Iphone except the music only comes out of the front speakers, nothing from the rear. If Ipod is plugged in through the USB port all channels play sound. I use BT for my iphone in my Honda Pilot and all channels have sound so rear channel BT is definitely lacking on this model. It does show song titles BT where the Honda does not. Buying from Crutchfield is a no brainer. They have always treated the customer well and in the case of the car radio provide everything you need including support to install your radio with ease.

Deck looks really nice in the dash of my son's Honda Civic. It took us 3 1/2 hours to install because of our lack of experience, but it seems to be mounted securely and looks and sounds like it should. The dash mounting kit was the correct one for the car and fit perfectly. However, I did not understand how to install a couple of the small pieces and left them out. Perhaps they were not necessary for this particular car. The dash mounting kit is sturdy plastic. I purchased the additional wire connectors to connect the wiring harness with the wiring harness from the deck. I would recommend that if you are unsure about doing it yourself, see if you can get it professionally installed. It does not cost very much.

Pros: Very nice looking and feels sturdy. Sounds great. Lots of great features. Dash kit is sturdy and fits perfectly.

Cons: Not sure I like the USB connector on the front. It looks great and is convenient, but I am somewhat nervous about the wire getting hit and damaging the unit. I think a USB port in the back with a cable coming through the pocket might be better.

    2004 Jeep Wrangler
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed this to replace a stock radio in my 2004 Jeep Wrangler as I wanted bluetooth and aux connections. Installation was relatively painless and the extra connectivity is great. Bluetooth audio works very well with most music and navigation apps I've tried on the iPhone5, displaying song details and able to skip tracks from the radio easily. Microphone works well for bluetooth calls. Bit of a learning curve to use (took a while to realize that the reason I was only getting sound through the front two speakers in bluetooth mode was because of an obscure menu setting), but once settings are figured out it's pretty straightforward to use. Buttons fairly small, don't feel solid and difficult to read but work fine and I've had no problems with them. Sound quality seems good for the price paid. Has decent volume and clarity both with direct connections and bluetooth - seems similar to how the stock radio I had previously sounded (though this was not a primary consideration for me in ordering as the Wrangler's general noise level when driving is an audiophiles nightmare) Overall very happy with the purchase - get a lot of features for what you pay for with this radio, and despite some minor foibles, I have no regrets purchasing this and would do the same again.

    Pros: Bluetooth, Price, Connectivity

Cons: Confusing menu structure to change settings, Small buttons which are difficult to read

    Good value in Deck

Where only a few options for a blue tooth head unit that would fit in my MK4 jetta without modifications. Went with the Kenwood due to the recent sale and picked up new speakers to go with it. So far I have been very happy. sound is good and the bluetooth is really great to have. The mic cord is supper long on this so you could put almost anywhere in the front of the car.

Pros: Features, good sound, ease of instal

Cons: interface is a bit odd, then again I've always owned pioneers.

Overall, this radio is great. I installed it into my 2009 Chevy impala and it works fantastic. I hooked it up to my kicker side door and rear speakers and they sound beautiful. Also have a sub hooked up. The sub preamp out makes it much easier to hook up the amp and the sub

Pros: Great sound quality, looks smooth, Bluetooth works very well.

Cons: The remote doesn't work at very far distances

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall, I am very pleased with this unit. The price is great. The installation couldn't have been simpler. It can play/connect to anything (CD, Flash Drive, Iphone, Android, Pandora) with Bluetooth and the steering wheel controls work (after installing the adapter) and the text still displays. I had to read the instructions to figure things out, but they are easy to follow. There are only a few things that I find frustrating. First, in my 1997 Pontiac Bonneville, the unit is installed very low so that the top of the single line of text is cut off making the display difficult to read. In vehicles where the unit is installed higher, this would not be a problem. Second, the buttons on the unit are very small and difficult to read. Third, the supplied remote is great but I would like to see additional buttons for "shuffle" and "display" (to cycle through clock, album, track, etc.) Incidentally, "shuffle" and "display" are the two buttons I have the hardest time finding on the unit itself. Even with these inconveniences, I still love this unit and would recommend it to others.

Pros: price, ease of installation, ability to play/connect to anything

Cons: Readability of display, tiny buttons on unit, missing buttons on remote

    Good product but...

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall this radio is a decent product. It looks good while going down the road and the sound quality is clear and powerful. The controls are not that straight forward and the titles over some of the buttons are not readable unless you get up close. Once you get used to the product this should not be an issue. Installation was less then average mainly becuase the radio does not fit the double din kit required for my sons Dodge Ram 1500. I had to file about an 1/8" from both ends inside the kit because it wasn't wide enough hfor the radio to fit in. I also had to remove the trim ring from the radio so the face would protrude through the kit. It still looks good. You can't tell I filed the edges but it would look much better with the trim attached. According to Crutchfield the kit is correct. Hmmm. Its also missleading, at least to me, that you would have to purchase an adapter to enable the satelite radio. In todays world that should be clear. There is also little or no instruction on what other items you need to purchase. There is an extra wiring harness you need to purchase to be able to wire in your new radio. Luckly I bought it not knowing I really needed it. Crutchfield could be more descriptive on what extras are needed when purchasing products.

    Pros: Sound quality, looks

Cons: Lack of instruction from Crutchfield on extras need for full function and installation of product.

Cons: Buttons are getting smaller then ever! The directions are always over kill, my customers always complain that they get confused! Small print and overall organization of directions are too much. A straight forward approach is what is needed. This is not just for this radio instructions but for all radios as well as any electronics today. When you get a book with a radio and you hand it to the customer they look at you with this blank face as if you just handed them a pop Quiz!!

Stereo is great. Hands free phone works very well. Only complaint is when the description stated Pandora control from iPod/Android. I assumed I could Like/Dislike songs through droid on Bluetooth. This is not the case, I can change tracks, but that is it. I also had hoped Pandora track info would be on the display, which it is not. Other than that, it is a great head unit.

Have pretty much always installed a custom deck in every vehicle I have owned. This being my latest edition. I have to say that it has some great features. I little confusing for a novice but common sense goes a long way with features. Solid head unit recommend to anyone looking for bluetooth. Pandora syncs great via bluetooth with my Note 2. Wish it had same sound quality with Spotify without using the input Jack. But all and all very impressed with the deck.

Pros: Great color variation, Compatible with Note 2 via bluetooth for Pandora streaming. Separate sub out great feature. Mic sounds good to on voice calls.

Cons: Be able to use radio controls for Spotify would be nice. Or at least have same sound quality without the input Jack via bluetooth.

I thought about giving it a five star. But decided on a four star. The only issue I have with the unit is that it doesn't default to a time display after a pre-determined time and the face plate that comes with the receiver kit (while it works) isn't a very nice fit. Maybe it's something that only I would notice since I installed it, but it is a detraction in my opinion. The unit does what it's supposed to and the controls are well placed and fairly intuitive. Bluetooth Pandora from an IPhone 4 works well. The hands free phone use is a plus and with a little work the cable will reach from the unit around the edge of the dash through the headliner to just behind the mirror. All in all, I recommend this unit!

Pros: Ease of installation and use.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this unit to replace my stock radio in my 2002 Honda Civic Ex. While doing this I decided to upgrade my stock 6x9 and add a 10" sub. I have had numerous Kenwood units and never been let down by their performance. This unit is by far the best unit I have owned. I found it very user friendly. I was able to link the unit to my Samsung Galaxy S phone through the Bluetooth and now can rock Pandora. It came with a mic which makes hands free calling a breeze. I have only found one thing I don't like about the unit and I am being very particular in this complaint. I found that the sensor for the remote is just to the left of the volume knob. In return the knob blocks the remote sensor. This makes a blind spot for the driver side and makes the driver hold the remote in the center of the car. This is just a design flaw that I found in my particular setup. It may not be a problem in other installations. All in all though, this is by far a great unit and I would recommend it. I have owned Sony, Pioneer, and Alpine and this is by far the best of the units I have owned. Crutchfield is awesome for providing the installation kits, wiring adapters, and a detailed installation manual. Thanks Crutchfield, you have another very satisfied customer.

Pros: Very easy to use. Great colors to choose from. Bluetooth works great

Cons: Remote sensor on unit needs to be moved to an area that is not blocked by the volume knob.

Bluetooth Technology: The Kenwood KDC-BT555U is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (ver. 2.1 + EDR) allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.5 (Hands Free Profile), OPP 1.1 (Object Push Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.2 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.3 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Kenwood KDC-BT555U. Visit Kenwood's Support Site for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled phones.

SPP (Secure Simple Pairing): With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the Kenwood KDC-BT555U without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings. When a registered Bluetooth device is in close proximity to the receiver, the auto connection function automatically pairs the two units. You can register up to five Bluetooth-enabled devices with the Kenwood head unit. A maximum of two Bluetooth-enabled phones can be connected at one time, but only one can be used at a time.

Bluetooth Hands-Free Communication: The head unit supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. The controls of the KDC-BT555U can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. The unit also includes an external microphone (featuring adjustable gain), so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers. During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.

    • Answering a Call: When a call comes in, a ring-tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker and the caller's name or phone number will be displayed. You can answer the call from the head unit's front-panel controls, or setup the head unit to automatically answer the incoming call immediately or after 1-99 seconds. The KDC-BT555U also supports the Call Waiting function, so you can answer another incoming call while suspending the current call you are on. Your compatible cell-phone must also support this feature.
    • Dialing a Number: Using the KDC-BT555U, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways:
      • Entering a Phone Number: Allows you to directly dial a phone number up to 32 digits from the head unit's control knob or remote control.
      • Speed (Preset) Dialing: Allows you to register up to 6 phone numbers for quick dialing. The preset numbers can be accessed from the head unit's Control Knob.
      • Phone Book: You can dial by using the downloaded phone book. You can download phone book data from your cell phone to the KDC-BT555U. Up to 600 numbers can be stored for each registered cell phone. Each number can be up to 32 digits long and each name can be up to 50 characters long.  Stored phone numbers can be categorized by General, Home, Office, Mobile, or Other. You can search each category of the phone book in alphabetical order.
      • Call History: The Call History is a list of calls that have originated from and were received by this unit that you can dial. You can select Outgoing, Incoming, or Missed calls.
      • Voice Dialing: If your mobile phone supports voice recognition, then you can dial out by voice command. Simply speak into the included microphone.

External Microphone: The Kenwood KDC-BT555U includes an external microphone to carry on your side of your phone conversation and voice command dialing. The external wired microphone offers improved audio quality versus an integrated microphone, so you can be heard easier over noisy traffic and road noise. You can adjust the volume level and noise cancellation of the microphone without affecting the other sources. The external microphone features an attached 10' cable terminated by a right-angle 3.5mm connector which plugs into the mic input on the rear-panel of the head unit. The microphone offers an integrated mounting bracket which can be clipped to your vehicle's sun-visor or taped to your dash. The external microphone measures 0.525" (diameter) x 1.505" (depth).

Note: This unit does not offer an integrated front-panel microphone.

SMS: If your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone is compatible with SMS (Short Message Service), the Kenwood head unit will notify you when a message has been received. You must then use your phone to check the message. You cannot read, edit, or send a message through this unit.

Wireless Audio Streaming (w/ Metadata Display): The Kenwood KDC-BT555U also supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth enabled audio player or smartphone. The KDC-BT555U will be able to control basic playback functions of your Bluetooth device's stored music; such as Play/Pause, Skip Next/Previous, Fast Forward/Rewind and Random/Repeat. The head unit will also display your stored music's song information; such as Artist name and Song/Album title. The KDC-BT555U also supports audio streaming of music apps downloaded on your smartphone with metadata display and limited control. Advanced music control of your music apps will still need be done via your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone. When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Siri Digital Assistant Control: When paired and connected with an iPhone 4S or 5/5C/5S via Bluetooth (not USB), the Kenwood KDC-BT55U has the ability to access Siri through its front-panel controls and external microphone. Simply press-and-hold down on the head unit's Answer Button to engage Siri and use the included microphone to communicate with Siri. Siri's voice will heard through your vehicle's speakers. All Siri functions including hands-free calling, music search, setting reminders, text-messaging, audible navigation, and more can be done through the KDC-BT555U and its microphone. The head unit's display will only indicate hands-free calling and Bluetooth audio information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the Kenwood KDC-BT555U; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone device).

Note: You can ask Siri to get directions to a destination and the turn-by-turn instructions will heard through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone 4S/5/5C/5S. The head unit's audio is attenuated while Siri provides audible directions.

Bluetooth Detailed Settings: The KDC-BT555U offers the following Bluetooth Detailed Settings, so you can configure the unit to suit your needs.

    • Call Beep: You can choose to output a beep from your vehicle's speaker's when a call comes in, or you can turn this function off.
    • Echo Level: You adjust the echo cancellation delay time until the least echo is being heard during a phone conversation.
    • Mic Gain: Adjusts the volume of the external microphone.

    iPod/Android/AUX Integration

iPod Direct Connection w/ DAC Bypass: The KDC-BT555U's front-panel USB port acts as an iPod/iPhone high-speed direct connection when used with the optional Kenwood USB Direct Connection Cable (113KCIP102, sold separately) or the USB/iPod cable that comes with your iPod/iPhone. If you have an iPod nano (7th gen), iPod touch (5th gen), or iPhone 5/5C/5S; use the Lightning-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect to the head unit. Using either cable allows audio playback, music navigation, information display, and charging of select iPod/iPhone models from the KDC-BT555U.

    • DAC Bypass: This USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's large music libraries to be loaded instantly to the head unit and sound quality to be maximized through the head unit's 24-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal to Noise ratio up to 105dB. The Kenwood head unit supports audio playback of music files and podcasts stored on your iPod or iPhone, as well as music apps streamed to your iPhone.
    • Music Control: You can choose to control the iPod/iPhone from the head unit or from your iPod/iPhone's clickwheel or touchscreen.
      • Head Unit: The Kenwood head unit allows you to navigate your iPod's music by Playlist, Artists, Album, Genre, Composer, Song, or Podcast. You can search these categories alphabetically or using a percentage search (0.5%, 1%, 5%, 10%). The head unit also supports Repeat (file) & Random (folder) playback functions of your connected iPod/iPhone.
      • iPod/App Mode: In iPod/App mode, you can navigate the stored music on your iPod/iPhone from its clickwheel or touchscreen. You can also listen to your favorite music apps (such as iHeartRadio, SiriusXM,, Rhapsody, & Slacker) from your iPhone (iOS 3.0+) through the Kenwood head unit and your vehicle's speakers. You will continue to use your iPhone's touchscreen to navigate your apps. Not all apps will be compatible with App Mode. Access to your iPhone's downloaded applications will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone to connect to the Internet.
    • Information Display: The KDC-BT555U will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information when you are controlling your iPod or iPhone from the Kenwood head unit. The head unit will display Track number, Elapsed playing time, Artist name, Song title, and Album label. If you choose to operate your connected iPod/iPhone via its clickwheel or touchscreen controls, the KDC-BT555U will not display your iPod/iPhone's music information (the head unit will instead display "APP/iPod").
    • Battery Charging: The head unit's USB connection provides 1A of current to power and charge your connected iPod/iPhone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position. This unit does not charge the iPad. If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it.

    • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)

The processing is optimized for the compression format and the bit rate used. When the Supreme Setting is Off, the unit plays the original sound stored in the audio file.

Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0 (-8 to +8 for Aux source).

Yes it will . My son has a HTC shift and I have an iPhone and they both work in it. I think you can link up to 5 phones [ JOHN M  Dec 17, 2013 ]
It should!!! I running my head unit via my iPhone 5s and it works seamlessly. The critical part is ensuring that your bluetooth can find the head unit so make sure your phone is fully charged and your bluetooth is turned on! The install was really easy and the total install time took about 1-hour. It could have gone faster but I solder my connections to ensure nothing comes loose caused by vibration. [ ALLEN  Dec 17, 2013 ]
To expand on my previous answer, I have an Android phone and have no problems connecting via Bluetooth. Some apps are mre integrated with the bluetooth and you will have mpre features. At a minimum, when using bluetooth on for this device, the sound from the Android is transmitted over bluetooth. Think of bluetooth as an invisible AUX cable, with more features for app that support more bluetooth features (track advance, displaying information on the display, making and ansering phone calls, etc...). I love this unit and it works very well with my Android. [ KEN  Dec 17, 2013 ]
    Yes [ SAMUEL  Dec 17, 2013 ]
It will link to it via Bluetooth as long as your Android is Bluetooth capable. [ KEN  Dec 17, 2013 ]
    Unfortunately I do not know. We linked an iPhone 5. [ CHARLES E  Dec 17, 2013 ]
Yes you can. Once I figure that out, it was very easy to do. [ TRAVIS  Dec 08, 2013 ]
Yep, it works the same as if you are using the controls on your device. This receiver is very easy to setup and use. [ JAMES  Dec 07, 2013 ]
im sorry i dont use it this way, i use bluetooth only for my phone, but i seem to think it can skip the bluetooth songs if i remember. It definitely can control my ipod wired. try looking at the manual? see link go to this address manual.kenwood(dot)com/files/GET0858-001A.pdf [ DAVID  Dec 07, 2013 ]
never tried , don t know. bluetooth works great though. we use pandora [ MICHAEL  Dec 07, 2013 ]
You have basic controls such as skip, etc over Bluetooth. Via USB you have more control such as thumbs up or down in pandora, etc. also should note that subwoofer channel does not seem to be active over Bluetooth, only when plugged in via cable. [ JUSTIN  Dec 07, 2013 ]
    Sorry but I don't have controls on my steering wheel. [ STACY L  Dec 08, 2013 ]
yes it should they explain it in the instructions but not sure you may have to have an adaptor. but i do know it can [ JIM  Dec 07, 2013 ]
No. Not out of the box. [ DAVID  Dec 05, 2013 ]
Yes. You will need to purchase the appropriate PAC unit for your vehicle. Crutchfield advisers are a great help if you have problems finding the correct unit. [ JEFFREY D  Dec 05, 2013 ]
Not sure it works with my iphone and s3 [ KENNETH  Dec 02, 2013 ]
I don't know it works great with the iPhone 4S and just upgraded to the 5s and it works great my wife loves it sorry I could not be of better help [ EDWARD  Dec 02, 2013 ]
Yes, as long as you phone has Bluetooth, it will hook up. Bluetooth doesn't get outdated like some other stuff and require a newer version. They may get better quality input and output but really not even enough to know the difference. [ RYAN  Dec 02, 2013 ]
Hi, I'm thinking it should with the Bluetooth, I have no problems with mine thus far... hope this helps :) [ NICOLE  Dec 02, 2013 ]
I would think any BT would work. I can say the MIC is not that sensitive I would suggest a placement near the visor. I dont know if the V3i can play music but the one note I would say to that is I havent been able to get my sub to work when streaming though a BT connection. [ PIERRE  Dec 02, 2013 ]
Unfortunately, I can't say for certain if it will or not. It has worked with my iPhone 5 w/o any issues. I would think that it should work fine. Sorry I can't be anymore help. [ CHRISTINA  Dec 02, 2013 ]
