The top of the heap

Built-in HD Radio™ and Bluetooth® are just two of the highlights in this Kenwood receiver's impressive resume. The KDC-BT955HD CD receiver offers an impressive multi-line display that gives you all the info you want, plus you can select independent colors for the display and button illumination. The 3-line display can be switched to a 2-line format with a larger font that makes it easier to read phone numbers, song titles, and source data. Sound tweakers will appreciate added features like digital time alignment, a 7-band equalizer, and a full complement of preamp outputs, complete with high-pass and low-pass filters.

HD Radio for awesome sound

When you tune in a local station broadcasting an HD Radio signal, you'll hear FM that's close to CD quality or AM that comes in clear and static free. And unlike satellite services, there are no subscription fees. If your iPod'® is hooked up to the KDC-BT955HD, you can also tag songs that you hear on HD Radio, then buy them later online. And most participating stations send out secondary programming, giving you more choices when you're in the mood for radio.

Bluetooth lets you concentrate on driving

Bluetooth gives you hands-free calling convenience, plus a wireless connection to the songs stored on your compatible music player. If you're an Android user who's grown tired of your old radio's complicated Bluetooth pairing issues, you'll love this receiver's simple, secure pairing (SSP) technology. If you're an iPhone® 4S or 5 user you'll enjoy full use of Siri through the receiver when the phone is paired.

Enjoy your phone's music apps

If you're a fan of Internet radio and music apps, you'll appreciate how the KDC-BT955HD integrates your iPhone, Android®, or Blackberry™ into your system. With this Kenwood and your smartphone you'll enjoy playing content from Pandora®, iHeart Radio, and Aha™ Radio on this great-sounding receiver. You can scroll through your stations, bookmark songs, and give a thumbs-up or thumbs-down right from the receiver's face.

Kenwood KDC-BT955HD CD receiver

This Kenwood can access and control Pandora, iHeart Radio, and Aha Radio apps from your iPhone, Android, or Blackberry.

Play (almost) anything

Of course, you can also enjoy music from your local AM/FM stations or your CD collection. But this Kenwood really gives you a lot of options:

  •  iPod or iPhone: Once you connect your iPod or iPhone to one of the front-panel USB inputs, you can use the receiver's controls to search through your albums, artists, and playlists.
  • Android: If you store your music on an Android device, you can download Kenwood's free Music Control app from the Android market to enjoy a variety of search and playback features.
  • Audio sources: If your music is on another device, just plug it into the handy front-panel auxiliary input.
  • SiriusXM-ready: If you're a satellite radio fan, the KDC-BT955HD will work with the SXV200V1 tuner (not included).

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Kenwood stereo. Connect a few wires, program the adapter for your car and this Kenwood, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

The Kenwood is amazing. Very simple to install thanks to Crutchfield's support and great wireing. Music sounds amazing and has so many optiona for systems that a true pro can make majic happen with this deck. Bluetooth is absolutly easy to use and accuret. My only complaints are that the screen isent very easy to see in bright daylighy even with brightness to max but after your fiddle with it the contorls are second nature

Pros: Incredible sound and abality. Easy to use once used for a week. Bluetooth is easy. Huge bang for your buck. So many equilizers and set up possibilities a pro can work wounders

Cons: Not easy to use in bright light.demo mode is a joke(just play around for a day and youll be fine).

Really like this receiver. The sound is far superior than my factory stereo. I've always had Kenwood car stereo products. No disappointments. NOT disappointed with this one either. I'll probably get an amplifier next. No problems with install. Crutchfield techs had it all figured out.

Pros: Great sound. USB works great with MP3 player. Bluetooth great with Android device. Haven't tried phone yet.

Cons: Get used to "no" pushbutton tuning. Use remote for that. Volume knob very skinny, needs higher profile knob. Detachable face, needs a case or sleeve for protection.

Over all, this thing is great. It's my third head unit and will be my last (for my current car). It does it's job very well, and can put out some very nice sound. I have 4x6 Alpines in my front doors, and 6x9 Alpines in the rear deck. With those and this head unit I get a really nice clear sound. The head unit has a lot of customization, I mean a lot (At least compared to the other two I had, a Pioneer and an alpine). I saw some one else say there was a lot of backing out of menus to navigate. This is true because the unit has very few buttons on it, but I don't find it to be irritating in the least. It has hands free calling, so when I step in my car my phone automatically connect and if I want to call some one I hold down the phone button and say call *Enter Name Here* and it almost always works flawlessly. After using the unit in my car for about a month I have experienced a few bugs, such as it locking up and not doing anything. When it does that I can usually fix it by turning it off then back on, but I may need to do it a few times. Some times it's a little more buggy than others but for the most part it works. I have heard that there is some software updates for it so I might try that. So overall it's a great unit and well worth spending the money on.

Pros: Great sound on the phone mic, easy to operate.

I bought this unit for my daughter's F250 for Christmas. The features are exactly what I think she needs as the Bluetooth integration will help keep her safe while driving. She can make and take calls without touching her phone or taking her eyes off the road. She can stream her music from her phone without having a cord hanging between the phone and the radio. This is a top notch car stereo and I highly recommend it.

Pros: Built-in HD radio, Pandora radio control, built-in bluetooth, wireless remote, front and rear USB inputs, front Aux jack and more in a high quality car deck. What's not to like.

Cons: It would be nice if there was a way to make some of the lighter colors in the display brighter so they are easier to see in daylight.

I bought and installed this unit in a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado to replace a $50 BOSS Audio unit. Installation was easy, particularly with all of the components provided. The sound is great, even out of 12 year- old factory speakers. Switching between the various audio sources takes some practice. The Kenwood "quick start" guide that comes with the unit is mostly worthless, but I was able to use trial and error to get most functions figured out without having to pull up the online guide. My phone paired up easily and I haven't had any issues with the Bluetooth dropping out as of yet. The lack of preset buttons on the face would be more aggravating if I listened to much terrestrial radio.

Pros: Great sound quality; competitive price for such a high- featured unit; Bluetooth works well with my Samsung G3

Cons: The "quick start" guide is completely worthless for all but the most basic functions; lacks preset buttons

Great sounding receiver with HD radio that sounds great. The BT works flawlessly and sound perfect. This unit is a great value for the money and it has Kenwood real 22 watts not the advertised 22 watts...big difference! Overall great unit.

Pros: Blue Tooth, 4V output, Great sound, Cool look

Cons: Each button does 4 things...a little tricky to learn at first.

Decent deck for the money. The only gripe I have is the illumination of the display. As others have stated, when in sunlight it is hard to see the display. Other than that, it works like a charm and was a good upgrade from my stock Infinity system that came with my 2002 Dodge Ram 1500. My suggestion would be to bypass the amp and replace your stock speakers with this deck. It blew my dash speakers within 2 days of using it.

Pros: Ease of use Lots of cool features

    Cons: Display

Looks awesome. It has some very cool features. But, you have to navigate the menu to do just about everything! Has no preset buttons for changing radio stations. Adjusting ipod to listen to a playlist is a major pain. There is no real easy ways to do much of anything with this unit. I am going to return it for a Alpine.

Pros: Looks very cool and lots and lots of features.

Cons: Features are a big pain to try and access.

I have had over 20 decked on my day with even more sound setups and this us the first deck that I could control all speakers with. If u are going to do a big system with multiple amps this deck will work great. Crossovers are on point along with good eq. Display has many different faces u can find one that u love. U can sound stage the car in many different ways lime having the phone only ring in the fronts or just the rears. U can adjust mic and noise canceling. Works with near every phone and does speech to text messaging. And the look is super clean. The display in sun light can be reversed to see it better. By this the color is the background and the words go black and u can see fine don't listen to the complainers. Hook it upto dimmer and it will switch with the head lights. BEST DECK ON MARKET FOR THE PRICE.

    Pros: Everything fully customizable.

Cons: The manual sucks. the deck does so much some more detailed instruction maybe needed.

This is the greatest deck I have ever had...and I've had some decks. Since this one was in my current price range and had great reviews...I searched and found the best price at Crutchfield! This deck is surprising in it's many possible set-ups. The sound quality on HD Radio is amazing. I am still finding out all the features this deck offers. Thank you!

Pros: It gives you optional 2 or 3 line display...this is great for me. Easier to read two line. It has a and extensive repertoire of colors and icons, bands and set-up features. Took me a minute to learn how to use it, after that it was very intuitive.

Cons: Scrolling to get to cell phone log and radio stations....needed more buttons I think. Perhaps the CD cover could be automated. As well as the USB port cover. Display can be tricky in daylight..still working on a one color that is always visable day and night.

I has features that I will never take full advantage of, but they are there if needed. My most liked feature is the BT audio, and hands free phone system. That makes life such a joy, and lets not forget safety while driving. Love this radio.

Pros: Blue tooth music, hands free phone. Awesome sound, wired and wireless. Just sooooo many features to take advantage of.

Cons: Takes a little getting use too, with all the features available... (-:

I have now owned this product for about three weeks and have used it thoroughly. I have to agree with other reviewers on most points. Overall, this being my first Kenwood purchase (I have always been a Pioneer guy), I believe this player is great for what I wanted. This is a feature-rich product with great performance. Integrated Bluetooth, HD Radio, RDS, and many more. However, there are some subtle but noticeable misses that could not be overlooked.

Pros: For the price, great features, great sound and easy to install.

Cons: Poor manual and immediate need of firmware update tops the list here. Also, the firmware procedure on Kenwood's website was poorly written. However, this is not Crutchfield's fault... Also, more color options would've been keen. I have a 4 yr old JVC unit costing half the money that has twice the colors to choose from. Also, the Bluetooth is quirky. For some reason, if I am on a call, if I plug in the phone to the USB cable, the call hangs up. ???

I have been long looking for iPod/iPhone connectivity to my '99 Mercedes Benz C230K and wanting to stay with the factory Bose system sound quality. Searched all over the web and couldn't find anything. Visited local car stereo shops and all recommend replacing factory unit and speakers. There was no way I would be spending that much money and removing the Bose system. Neither did I want to change the factory unit as this would devalue reselling a Mercedes.

Frustrated, I called Crutchfield first and was informed that replacing the unit will match my Bose speakers system. It will also come with a wiring harness which will easily allow me to put back the factory unit when it's time to resell the car. Cost is very reasonable and all the accessories I need comes with the deal free. Not the exact thing I'm looking for but closest to what I wanted to do.

NO REGRETS! Installation took me 5 minutes to wire the harness at the kitchen counter using very well recommended plastic connectors. Another 5 minutes to remove the factory unit and install the Kenwood unit. It took me longer to snake the external mic from the rear view windshield mirror through the front roof panel, down the left pillar, under the instrument panel and through the center console.

The only feature this unit had over the other units is it's ability to work Siri from the panel (instead of your iPhone). This was something I wasn't looking for but became a MUST when I saw this feature in the iPod/iPhone details.

Pros: Reasonable Price. Ease of Installation. It's features matched what I was looking for iPod/iPhone connectivity. Added bonus is control of Pandora and iHeart from the unit. Continue pressing the phone button and Siri takes over. You DO NOT have to mess around with your phone with this unit. All the controls are on the unit and the remote control is just in my console. I have the same Bose sound quality as before and it will only take me 5 minutes to replace the factory unit when I need to.

Cons: Illumination is not bright enough during daylight. Will have to mess around with contrast when I have nothing else better to do. Functionality and quality outweighs "bling" and "coolness" anytime.

Great unit and installation was a snap in spite of being sent the wrong wiring harness. I was upgrading from a Kenwood KDC-BT948HD which had a dead FM receiver, wasn't a2dp, and didn't like my Galaxy S4. This unit used the same harness and was an upgrade in every way. BT sound quality is good but I couldn't get it to display any track info. Sirius XM plays well and was easy to setup. I like the category search feature it has for the Sat radio, it can become quite time consuming to scroll through 200 stations. Pandora and iHeart work well over BT with good quality. HD radio sounded good as well. At higher volume levels (30+) I noticed some distortion but this could have something to do with my decade old factory speakers. I never listen to it this high anyway, but if I were then I would invest in some quality speakers. Phone calls sound good, controls are intuitive and importing contacts was a snap. I like the clean look of this unit and the fact that I can adjust the display color to match my dash lights perfectly. It's so much cleaner than those gawdy cheap looking units that look like they were stolen out of some high schooler's bondo-colored honda civic. I'll probably never use the CD player and have yet to try the USB jacks so I cant comment there. I wish it had preset buttons. It's so simple and yet so useful. Why did these get left off??? Overall, I'm very happy with this unit. No regrets here.

Pros: A2DP support for the latest phones Good BT Streaming quality In app BT support is seamless for music player, Pandora and iHeart Less is more clean appearance Customizable screen colors Front and rear USB ports

Cons: Menu option navigation is distracting, bad quality for a vehicle based unit No info display for songs played off your phone on BT? Am I missing something? Sent the wrong wiring harness, however my old one from the previous kenwood worked fine

I turn on my car and the radio begins playing my favorite Sirius station and begin monitoring my phone for calls. I just plugged in my iPhone into the USB and it switches to it. I've already done a firmware update using the USB port, tweaked the audio for the best sound which is superior to my old FM transmitter for XM. If I'm hard-wired, my phone is charged while I browse for artist, title, and/or album using the multi-function knob. If I'm connected via BT, I can begin playing my songs and switch to BT source on the radio. Connect a USB stick to the front or rear connector and play off the thumb drive. Effortless, brilliant. Just set it and forget it, play any source without thinking too much about it. Just ripped a CD onto your iPod and want to listen in the car? Not a problem, wired or wireless. Tag songs on the radio using the "thumbs up" button and a playlist appears in iTunes with Apple happy to let you purchase and download the song with the click of a mouse. HD radio has decent reception with my stubby rubber antenna.

    It's not a radio. It's an experience.

But, even with 4 lines of display, it doesn't display a clock! I have to trade the station name for a clock in tiny numbers. While the mfgr is proud of their color display which has 4 zones and 10x10x10 colors, I can't read it very well in sunlight. The difference between bright and dim was so subtle I needed to verify it after sunset to insure it was working, finally settled on reverse-video white.

Pros: Effortless, brilliant integration of iPhone, Satellite radio, and phone. Quick start-up, firmware upgradable. Lots of features and options to tweak the sound and edit the text displays. Dials right from my contact list on my iPhone. Navigation to get to music songs, albums, or artists is easy.

Cons: Remote control buttons do not work well. Even with all the fancy colors, the display is nearly impossible to read in bright sunlight. I would have preferred a single color orange display which I could read rather than 1000 possible colors and 4 zones which gets washed out. I need to shout into the mic to make a phone call. Navigation to get to a radio station or preset is cumbersome.

Easy to install with the Crutchfield directions. Provides good sound quality (most importantly). Lots of room to fine-tune the audio controls. The display options could be much better. And controlling the settings is somewhat difficult through all the menus you have to work through. Nice, clean look on the face of the headunit. Overall pleased with the purchase though.

I researched car stereos for a couple weeks before I decided to purchase this particular unit. I decided on the Kenwood KDC-BT955HD because of the amount of features - Bluetooth, satellite, HD radio, iPod, Pandora, 3 lines of information on the display, selectable colors for the buttons and display, 4V preamp outputs, and iPhone 5 compatibility. Pairing of the stereo and my iPhone 5 was very easy.

I wanted a single din stereo so I could have the extra storage under the stereo. I also didn't want to pay the extra money for a double din touchscreen unit however I am having second thoughts about that now. The stereo sounds great but it is a little cumbersome to adjust settings, especially while driving. All adjustments are made through a menu that is navigated by pressing and turning the volume button.

Pros: Great sound, lots of features, iPhone 5 compatibility

Cons: User settings and adjustments a little cumbersome, especially while driving.

Installed in a 1979 MGB that I have owned for more than 30 years. There have been more than five major audio system changes over this period. MP3 USB input, controls that would not distract from driving and dash light color were primary concerns. System: Kenwood X4-4S, Polk MM6501, Polk MM691, Kenwood KSC-SW11, Axxess OESWC-STALK. End results exceeded expectations. MP3 files sound HUGE better than previous solution of AUX in. Bypassing DSP for MP3 playback sounds better to me. Rear USB input conveniently routed under the center console with easy access under the ashtray. MP3 folder/file information reads VERY FAST on this center unit and is displayed very well and scrolls as fast as you want. Radio reception is superior to previous center units although HD radio is limited in the Las Vegas area. Kenwood ONLINE WEB manual is much better than the pdf download or supplied manual. Poor technical support in general has made calling technical support a last result ( think Cable Company ). My install would have gone much better if I would have called Crutchfield with my concerns, WOW who knew technical support was not totally dead in the US. Shocker. Crutchfield takes technical support very seriously and all of their representatives were great. The Excelon KDC-X997 appears to be the same but only slightly different for $10 more and the SETTINGS are slightly different, IE you can pick speaker sizes instead of SMALL/MEDIUM etc.

Pros: Center unit provides outstanding control over staging, speaker size, vehicle size, HPF, LPF, etc. Center unit is not cluttered with controls that require taking attention away from driving. MP3 Id3 information is very nicely displayed and easy to navigate.

Cons: In theory turning off the onboard amp should improve sound. Firmware glitch or design error disables the pre-amp outputs when the onboard amp is disabled. Some of the center unit settings DISAPPEAR from the menu after they are set initially. I can understand this as a design choice to simplify the menus after things are initially setup BUT this means it is necessary to cut power to the center unit or use the RESET button and start from the beginning every tim e to gain access to all settings.

Although I've only had it for 2 weeks, I am underwhelmed by it. It has everything I was looking for (HD, Bluetooth, iPod connectivity) at what I considere a fair price. It doesn't have a lot of "bling" to it, giving it a more subtle, factory look instead of a "Hey, look at me!!" appearance. I have installed dozenes of car stereos and the second one I've installed in my '99 SVT Mustang and there were no suprises, though the pre-amp outputs are nice allowing hook up to the car's amplified Mach sound system without requiring a matching transformer. I am still waiting to see how well the phone works with the top down. There are, however, two problems worth noting: 1) With the exception of the volume control, none of the controls are intuitive and the instructions aren't of much help. I had to contact Kenwood to download a more complete instruction manual (now I instructions on how to use the remote). 2) Making any changes/adjustments to the system while driving can lead to an accident. Simply changing the radio station is a 4 step process requiring your attention be focused on the display. Using the remote simplifies the procedure, but until I got a copy of the expanded manual, I didn't know that. Perhaps as I become accustomed to it, its operation will become easier, but for now it's not winning me over. If I had to do it again I might still pick this Kenwood but not before taking another look at the other options again.

Pros: HD, Bluetooth, iPod connectivity, Pandora, etc. Front and rear USB inputs High degree of sound adjustment available Fair price Clean appearance without a lot of "bling" Able to match display color to the car's instruments

Cons: None of the controls are intuitive Multiple steps required for simple tasks Instructions aren't of much help for set up and adjustment and they assume you understand all the subleties of audio setup procedures No instructions on how to use the remote

This deck has it all and almost every aspect is customizable. I was looking for a deck with time alignment/correction and I like that you can use a custom setting for each speaker or use a preprogrammed listening position. In this regard i like it better than my older alpine deck. I was also looking for hd radio to create new listening opportunities and this doubled the number of stations I listen to now. It also helped with the wife-acceptance-factor, does not use cell data or have a monthly fee. The pro audio tools are great- speaker size selection and highway mode offered noticeable sound improvements. After two weeks I still have the display cycling all the colors to determine the best for legibility and appearance but it also gives it a certain cool factor this way.

Pros: -sound quality: lots of fidelity and depth, clarity at high volume, tons of settings, a large range of subwoofer control, fm clarity and reception, cd sound quality -lots of source input options -hd radio -time alignment feature - No problems experienced with I phone 5 integration

Cons: - I am new to hd and I this is prob common, but there is a slight delay in linking/ tuning to some of the hd stations it seems more of a problem when I am in rural areas. -hard to adjust custom eq - Bluetooth and USB sound quality- I thought would sound better with apple lossless format, I guess I was expecting more but I still hear digital noise especially in the higher frequencies ( hi hat and crash cymbals for example ) the deck is so loud and clear it seems to amp imperfections

I've been putting off installing a new car stereo in my 2001 Highlander until the 2013 Kenwood models came out. Crutchfield was one of the first to have the BT955HD available. I liked that they provided all the installation stuff with the purchase - it made it worth far more than those that sell just the unit, even though the price might appear slightly lower. This was pretty much a plug and play operation. The instructions were clear, and even though this is my first car stereo install, it went very smoothly. And the BT955HD was worth the wait - it is incredible. Bluetooth streaming from my iPhone 5 is a snap. I like listening to audio books, and they start up right where I left off, no input required. Same with music input from the phone. HD Radio also worked easily right out of the box. Getting used to the knobology takes a little patience, but if I can get it, anyone can. Sound quality is the best!!! And I haven't even messed with the EQ settings yet. I'm still using the stock speakers, but this install was so easy, I'll probably go with some new ones soon. Calls over the system are also incredible. The microphone works great and was very easy to install. Very high quality transmission and reception. I also made a call as soon as I got everything closed up, and they couldn't believe I was calling from the car. I was actually going to buy a new car because I disliked my old stereo so much. I figure I just saved over $60,000. Yahoooo!!

Pros: Easy install, technology works as advertised right out of the box. Excellent sound quality, even through 12 year old factory speakers - a much larger improvement than I expected. Did I mention that the Bluetooth iPhone integration and HD Radio are incredible? This system exudes High Quality!! The Crutchfield install kit and wiring adaptor made this radio swap easy, even for a complete novice.

Cons: The online manual is a little sketchy - I'm a visual learner, and I don't see any graphics. The included Quick Start Guide takes several readings and some trial and error to understand.

I'd like to echo some of Richard's comments. Specifically, the deck has a great feature set, and I have no problems with the sound quality, but the ease of use can leave something to be desired. Most of the functionality of the deck is accessed via the volume knob/control wheel, and there's usually a bit of a delay after selecting an option. The controls for tuning the radio are especially cumbersome in my opinion. On my old Sony deck, for example, there were dedicated controls for 1) band, 2) cycling through presets, 3) manual tuning and 4) 6 individual preset buttons. On this Kenwood, there are no preset buttons (to access them "directly" you have to use the menu/control wheel) and there is only one set of dedicated buttons that can be switched between cycling through presets or manual tuning.

I also wish the display offered a bit more customization, and that some of the menu items were easier to get to.

All of that said, I have mostly been playing my iPhone via Bluetooth, which I have not had any problems with. I'd probably buy it again if given the choice, as there aren't many other decks with the feature set I wanted, but I do wish there were more controls that didn't require looking at the unit to operate, especially for the radio.

Pros: Lots of input options (CD, USB, Bluetooth, HD Radio, etc), good sound quality, lots of features.

Cons: No preset buttons, lots of functionality requires use of the control wheel, controls and/or display are often somewhat unresponsive.

Ordered this with 4 new speakers. Have not yet installed the speakers and im in no major hurry since this mod alone has made my stock speakers so much more alive. Probably a combination between higher power output and the HD tuner. Went for the external mic and a friend said quote, "and its clear! usually you sould like crap on those car BT things." In response to a previous review, yes there are no station buttons. but you can preset the stations you want and flip through them by the forward and back button under the roller. I moved the rear USB cable to a convenient spot in my dash so i do not have to plug my iphone 5 cable into face. looks clean. oh, and no issues with the iphone 5. all contacts, pandora stations and music load with no issues. I literally had the BT connected, played music from my phone, then made a call within the first 6 minutes of install. really not that difficult. My only concern? Daytime reflection is high on the screen. Makes it difficult to read at times. Not sure that can be avoided on these headunits though. Cheers!

Pros: Sound quality, fairly intuitive to navigate, any color you desire, phone connectivity.

    Cons: screen reflection.

I purchased this receiver to replace the factory radio in my 2000 XK8. The factory radio was AM/FM with cassette but no CD. Since the Jag didn't have the CD changer It was clearly a simple decision to upgrade. I wanted a unit that I could connect a IPOD or thumb drive to and of course CD; and the HD tuner helped the decicion on this particular unit. I also wanted a clean un-cluttered receiver to compliment the original look of the car. The instalation instructions are fairly clear and complete and I re-used the connectors from the factory radio to avoid any modification to the vehicle wiring thus turning the Kenwood harness into an adapter. The performance is great! The sound is an order of magnitude better than the factory Alpine. I used a Axxess steering wheel adapter to finish the installation and it self programmed and functions as original. I am quite pleased with the Kenwood and the Axxess SWA.

    Pros: Excellent sound, contemporary features.

Cons: Not really a con but the Kenwood instructions don't really adress how to operate the unit or what menue's are available so it's a bit of a learning curve to figure how everything functions. I think this is as much my technical inexperiance as an issue with the documentation.

This unit is a very nice head unit. What initially sold me on the unit was the ability to play almost anything, from MP3 CD's to USB devices, audio inputs, not to mention the added BlueTooth functionality. All in all a very nice replacement for my stock GM unit in my 02 Avalanche. The installation instructions were very clear with one small hiccup (which was fixed with a quick call to Crutchfield support) and the fact that it came with all the adapters and harnesses that I needed made the install a breeze. My main issue is simply a matter of getting used to the deck. There are no dedicated station buttons so you have to go through a few keystrokes to get to any saved programming. This just adds to the learning curve and makes it a bit difficult until I can get used to it. But the menus are fairly easy to navigate even without reading the manual (what guy reads those?).

Pros: Good sound quality, built in equalizer, BlueTooth, HD Radio, USB and Sirius/XM compatibility.

Cons: Steep learning curve, slightly difficult to bring up saved programming.

Bluetooth Technology: The Kenwood KDC-BT955HD is equipped with built-in Bluetooth (ver. 2.1 + EDR) allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.5 (Hands Free Profile), OPP 1.1 (Object Push Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.2 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.3 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Kenwood KDC-BT955HD. Visit Kenwood's Support Site for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled phones.

SPP (Secure Simple Pairing): With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the Kenwood KDC-BT955HD without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings. When a registered Bluetooth device is in close proximity to the receiver, the auto connection function automatically pairs the two units. You can register up to five Bluetooth-enabled devices with the Kenwood head unit. A maximum of two Bluetooth-enabled phones can be connected at one time, but only one can be used at a time.

Bluetooth Hands-Free Communication: The head unit supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. The controls of the KDC-BT955HD can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. The unit also includes an external microphone (featuring adjustable gain), so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers. During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your cell phone) and the Hands Free Mode.

    • Answering a Call: When a call comes in, a ring-tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker and the caller's name or phone number will be displayed. You can answer the call from the head unit's front-panel controls, or setup the head unit to automatically answer the incoming call immediately or after 1-99 seconds. The KDC-BT955HD also supports the Call Waiting function, so you can answer another incoming call while suspending the current call you are on. Your compatible cell-phone must also support this feature.
    • Dialing a Number: Using the KDC-BT955HD, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways:
      • Entering a Phone Number: Allows you to directly dial a phone number up to 32 digits from the head unit's control knob or remote control.
      • Speed (Preset) Dialing: Allows you to register up to 6 phone numbers for quick dialing. The preset numbers can be accessed from the head unit's Control Knob.
      • Phone Book: You can dial by using the downloaded phone book. You can download phone book data from your cell phone to the KDC-BT955HD. Up to 600 numbers can be stored for each registered cell phone. Each number can be up to 32 digits long and each name can be up to 50 characters long.  Stored phone numbers can be categorized by General, Home, Office, Mobile, or Other. You can search each category of the phone book in alphabetical order.
      • Call History: The Call History is a list of calls that have originated from and were received by this unit that you can dial. You can select Outgoing, Incoming, or Missed calls.
      • Voice Dialing: If your mobile phone supports voice recognition, then you can dial out by voice command. Simply speak into the included microphone.

External Microphone: The Kenwood KDC-BT955HD includes an external microphone to carry on your side of your phone conversation and voice command dialing. The external wired microphone offers improved audio quality versus an integrated microphone, so you can be heard easier over noisy traffic and road noise. You can adjust the volume level and noise cancellation of the microphone without affecting the other sources. The external microphone features an attached 10' cable terminated by a right-angle 3.5mm connector which plugs into the mic input on the rear-panel of the head unit. The microphone offers an integrated mounting bracket which can be clipped to your vehicle's sun-visor or taped to your dash. The external microphone measures 0.525" (diameter) x 1.505" (depth).
