Fully equipped and ready for your smartphone

The Kenwood Excelon DDX5901HD DVD receiver boasts an impressive range of features, including compatibility with many iPhone® apps, comprehensive iPod® and iPhone controls, plus built-in Bluetooth® capability and HD Radio™ reception. Connections are state of the art — in addition to USB and A/V inputs, you'll find an HDMI MHL input, providing compatibility with the current generation of smartphones, including video capabilities with the iPhone 5. And if you're a sound quality fan, you'll enjoy the capabilities of the 7-band equalizer with Drive EQ — it automatically compensates for road noise when the stereo is playing at lower volume levels.

Kenwood Excelon DDX5901HD

The DDX5901HD features an easy-to-use interface.

Easy app control

You can access your favorite Pandora® and iHeartRadio stations when your smartphone's connected. Kenwood's iPhone App Mode lets you stream video content from sources like Netflix and YouTube when your car's parked. You can also load Garmin's impressive Street Pilot app on your iPhone 4 or 4S, and check out maps and directions on the receiver's screen, so you can stay on course during your travels

Easy Bluetooth pairing and Siri compatibility

The DDX5901HD's Apple Auto Pairing automatically recognizes your iPhone when you plug into the USB port and sends a pairing request. Just press a button on the receiver's touchscreen and your iPhone is paired – simple as that! If you've got an iPhone with Siri, you'll be able to access Siri through the receiver — no need to take your eyes off the road to pick up the phone. Bluetooth audio streaming in the DDX5901HD supports apt-X, providing improved sound quality with compatible devices.

Enjoy music and videos

And if you think that radio has "jumped the shark," try out the crystal clear sound from the built-in HD Radio tuner and access the additional channels broadcast by participating stations. You can also add an optional SiriusXM tuner to this Kenwood and check out the in-depth music, news, and entertainment programming offered on satellite radio.

You can watch your favorite DVDs or iPod video on the built-in screen whenever you're parked. But if you're traveling, you can entertain your back seat passengers while you drive — just set them up with a rear screen and wireless headphones and they can watch video content while you drive.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Kenwood stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and this Kenwood, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls.

iDatalink Maestro lets you keep your car's factory extras

If your vehicle comes with factory add-ons like Ford SYNC®, GM OnStar®, or Chrysler Uconnect™, you don't have to worry about losing your favorite conveniences to get navigation and better sound — the DDX5901HD offers compatibility you won't find in many other aftermarket radios, thanks to the iDatalink Maestro module (not included).

For Ford SYNC systems, you'll be able to retain voice-controlled features, steering wheel audio controls, and factory audio functions. For GM vehicles, you'll keep your steering wheel audio controls, your factory amp, safety warning chimes, and OnStar, if present, while Chrysler owners will get to keep all their Uconnect functionality. The iDatalink adapter also lets you tap into your vehicle's diagnostic port, so you can check out expanded functionality including gauges, climate controls, a distance sensor, and tire pressure monitor on the Kenwood's screen.

    Touchscreen Display

6.1" Touchscreen Display: The Kenwood DDX5901HD features a 6.1" widescreen (16:9) touchscreen LCD with LED backlighting. The LCD touchscreen has a resolution of 800 (H) x 480 (V) x RGB with 1,152,000 total pixels. This unit has touchscreen controls with easy-to-identify icons, making menu navigation easy.

    • Customizable Home Screen: The Home Screen features 3 large source icons and 5 smaller source/setup icons. You can customize which 3 large source icons you want as your favorites, as well as customize 4 of the 5 smaller source/setup icons. The "All SRC" icon is not customizable; pressing this icon displays all source/setup icons on two pages.
    • Custom Background Images: You can download a still image (800 x 600) for use as the unit's background from a connected USB thumbdrive.
    • Picture Adjustment: You can adjust the unit's display brightness, contrast, color, tint, sharpness, and black level to suit your viewing needs during video playback.
    • Aspect Ratio: You can change the aspect ratio for video playback. You can select from Full (16:9), Just (4:3 LB), or Normal (4:3), or Auto (automatically selects to match incoming video signal)
Note: For your convenience, this unit is equipped with a multiple language display (21 languages including English, French, Spanish, and others).

Front-Panel Controls w/ Variable Color Illumination: In addition to the touchscreen controls, the unit includes frequently used buttons and a rotary-dial along the left edge of the screen. You can adjust the head unit's button illumination, as well as display background color from the following preset colors - Blue, Purple, Sky Blue, Aqua, Yellow, Green, Amber, Red, Pink, White or Scan (Scans through all preset colors). You can also select a custom "User" color that is adjusted between Red, Green, and Blue (values range: 0-31). You can save up to 3 custom color presets. The Kenwood logo and eject button remain red, regardless of variable color illumination setting.

Clock Display: The DVD receiver offers a 12-hour clock which is visible from any source or menu screen. With your vehicle's key in the accessory or start position, the head unit will continue to display the LCD background image, clock, and button illumination during "Standby" mode. Pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely.

Security Indicator: The Security Indicator feature helps to protect the Kenwood DDX5901HD against theft. Turning this function "On" allows the security indicator light (red) on the front-panel of the head unit to flash when your vehicle's ignition is off.

Parking Brake Detection: To prevent the display of video while the vehicle is in motion, the light green wire (within 4-pin harness) must be connected to the vehicle's parking brake detection circuit. You cannot view video unless your vehicle's parking brake is engaged. If you attempt to view video without the parking brake engaged, the unit's LCD touchscreen will simply display a blue screen and "Parking Off". While your vehicle is in motion (parking brake off), you can still view all of the head unit's menu screens/settings, source information, metadata, and album artwork.

2-DIN Chassis: The DDX5901HD has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as "Double-DIN"), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. The unit can be ISO-mounted using factory brackets, or Euro-mounted using the supplied mounting sleeve. As always, please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to verify fit with your vehicle.

The DDX5901HD also supports audio streaming of music apps downloaded on your smartphone with metadata display and limited control. Advanced music control of your music apps will still need be done via your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone.

Note: When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Siri Eyes Free Control: When paired and connected with an iPhone with Siri via Bluetooth (not USB), the Kenwood DDX5901HD has the ability to access Siri through its front-panel controls and external microphone. Simply press-and-hold down on the head unit's "VOICE/TEL" button to engage Siri and use the included microphone to communicate with Siri. Siri's voice will heard through your vehicle's speakers. All Siri functions including hands-free calling, music search, setting reminders, text-messaging, audible navigation, and more can be done through the DDX5901HD and its microphone. The head unit's LCD touchscreen will only display hands-free calling and Bluetooth audio information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the Kenwood DDX5901HD; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone device).

Note: You can ask Siri to get directions to a destination and the turn-by-turn instructions will heard through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone with Siri. The head unit's audio is attenuated while Siri provides audible directions.

    iPhone/Android Integration

iPod/iPhone AV Playback: The Kenwood DDX5901HD supports direct connection of your 30-pin or Lightning-connector iPod/iPhone through its rear-panel USB port and 3.5mm input or HDMI input. The DDX5901HD offers audio/video playback of connected Apple iPod/iPhone models (video can only be displayed while the vehicle is in park).

    • 30-Pin Dock Connector: If you own an older iPod/iPhone with the 30-pin dock connector, you can enjoy audio and video files on your Apple device through the Kenwood DDX5901HD. Using Kenwood's KCA-IP202 iPod video cable (113KCIP202, sold separately), you can enjoy audio playback of your stored music and music apps on your iPod/iPhone; plus video playback of your stored movies and video apps (like Netflix) on your iPod/iPhone through the Kenwood DDX5901HD. If you only desire audio playback, you can use Kenwood's KCA-IP102 iPod cable (113KCIP102, sold separately) or the dock connector-to-USB cable that comes with your Apple device to connect your iPod/iPhone to the DDX5901HD.
    • Lightning Connector: If you have a newer iPod/iPhone with the Lightning-connector, you can use the Lightning-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect your iPod/iPhone to the Kenwood DDX5901HD for audio playback only. You'll be able to listen to stored music and music apps on your Lightning-connector Apple device through the Kenwood DVD receiver. To watch stored video and video apps (like Netflix) in addition to music from your Lightning-connector Apple device on the Kenwood DDX5901HD, you'll need Apple's Lightning-to-Digital AV adapter, a Lightning-to-USB cable, and a mobile-grade HDMI cable; such as the Kenwood KCA-HD100 (all sold separately) - this type of connection also requires Bluetooth pairing.
Note: You will need to select which type of connection method you are using in the head unit's setup menu.

iPod/iPhone Control: In addition to audio/video playback, the Kenwood DDX5901HD supports control, song/artist information display, and battery charging of your compatible Apple device.

    • Head Unit Control: The Kenwood head unit allows you to navigate your iPod's music library by Playlist, Artists, Album, Song, Genre, Song, Podcast, or Audiobook. Your iPod's video library can be searched by Video Playlist, Movie, Music Video, TV Show, Video Podcast, Rented Movie, or iTunesU. You can then search each of these categories using the head unit's touchscreen slider function (categories will be listed in alphabetical order). You can even search your iPod's music library by Album Art and create a Favorite List, which contains an original playlist of your favorite 10 albums. In addition, the head unit offers Link Search, which allows you to play songs related to the currently playing song. Link Search lets the head unit create an album list of the currently playing artist, a song list of the currently playing album, a artist list of the currently playing genre, or a album list of currently playing composer. The head unit also supports basic playback functions such as Play/Pause, Fast Forward/Rewind, Previous/Next Track and  Repeat/Random of your connected iPod/iPhone. Newer iPod/iPhones with iOS 6.0+ will still allow you to navigate stored music and movies from the Apple device's touchscreen, as well access music and video apps; older iPod/iPhone devices will be locked during connection.
    • Song/Artist Info & Album Art: The DDX5901HD will display your iPod/iPhone's stored music information including Track number, Elapsed playing time, Song/Album title, Artist name, and Album art. Pandora and iHeart Radio will also display metadata information. Other music apps will only display song/artist information in Apps mode.
    • Battery Charging: The head unit's USB connection provides 1A of current to power and charge your connected iPod/iPhone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position. This unit does not charge the iPad. If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it.

Apps Mode for iPhone & Android (via HDMI): You can listen to audio from stored music and music apps, watch video from stored movies and movie apps, and view navigation apps on your Lightning-connector iPhone (iOS 7+) or Android (OS 4.1+) smartphone, using the head unit's HDMI input and its Apps Mode. The head unit will mirror the display of your mobile device (not always full-screen) when in Apps Mode. Apps Mode also provides basic playback control for your iPhone from the receiver's touchscreen; basic playback functions include Play/Pause, Fast Forward/Rewind, and Previous/Next Track. You can even control your Android device from the head unit's touchscreen just like you would from the smartphone; this requires that your vehicle's parking brake be engaged (all other Apps mode functionality does not require the parking brake be engaged). Using either a compatible iPhone or Android smartphone, you can also exit App Mode and access Pandora, and iHeartRadio directly from the head unit's touchscreen with advance music navigation and control. In addition, the iPhone lets you access its stored music and video library from the head unit's touchscreen with advance search and playback control when connected via HDMI. While navigation maps from your smartphone can be displayed on the Kenwood head unit's touchscreen, the navigation app will still need to be controlled from your iPhone or Android device (unless you have the vehicle's parking brake engaged; in this case you can control Android maps from the head unit's touchscreen).

    • iPhone Connectivity: If you have an iPhone with the Lightning connector, you will need Apple's Lightning Digital AV adapter, Lightning-to-USB cable, and a a mobile-grade HDMI cable; such as the Kenwood KCA-HD100 (sold separately). This type of connection also requires Bluetooth pairing. The HDMI connector provides the audio/video playback, while the USB connection charges your iPhone device. The Bluetooth connection allows you to control basic playback functions from the head unit.
    • Android Connectivity: The head unit's HDMI port is MHL compatible; this means you can simply connect select MHL-compatible Android smartphones to the  receiver via a MHL-to-HDMI cable; such as Kenwood's KCA-MH100 cable (sold separately). This type of connection also requires Bluetooth pairing and installation of the Kenwood Smartphone Control App from Google Play (may also require firmware update). The HDMI connector provides audio/video playback and charging of your Android smartphone's battery, while the Bluetooth connection is needed for touchscreen control. Compatible Android smartphones include Samsung Galaxy *S3/S4/S5/Note II/Note III, Sony Xperia Z/Z1/ZR/ZL, and HTC One (all with OS 4.1+). *The Samsung Galaxy S3/4/5 and Note II/III requires an additional 3rd party MHL microUSB 5-pin to 11-pin adapter (sold separately).
Note: Access to your iPhone and Android smartphone 's downloaded applications will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone or Android smartphone to connect to the Internet. Not all Android and Apple iOS apps are guaranteed to be compatible.

Waze App: The DDX5901HD also supports the Waze navigation app (from iTunes & GooglePlay) for Apple iPhone with Lightning connector and Android via HDMI/MHL through the head unit's Apps Mode. You'll be able to view the Waze app from the Kenwood head unit's touchscreen. If you are using an Android smartphone, you can control Waze from the head unit's touchscreen when the vehicle's parking brake is engaged.

Garmin App (for iPhone Lightning Connector): In addition, Apple's Lightning Digital AV adapter, Lightning-to-USB cable, and a a mobile-grade HDMI cable; such as the Kenwood KCA-HD100 (sold separately) allows you to view navigation maps and get audible/visual directions on the DDX5901HD's touchscreen, when the Garmin StreetPilot Onboard USA app ($49.99), and the Vehicle Display Integration in-app option ($49.99) are both downloaded to your connected iPhone with Lightning connector (iOS 7.0+). The Garmin StreetPilot Onboard USA app contains NAVTEQ map data for the United States (lower 49 states); with over a million POIs, turn-by turn directions, lane assist with junction view, traffic updates, and speed limit alerts. Because the map data is downloaded onto your iPhone and does not live on the network, wireless coverage is not required to navigate. Once you have selected your destination on your connected iPhone, your map route will be visible on the DDX5901HD's touchscreen (even with parking brake disengaged) and turn-by-turn directions can be heard through your car stereo speakers. You will continue to use your iPhone's touchscreen to control the Garmin StreetPilot USA app. The screen of your iPhone and the screen of the Kenwood DDX5901HD may not be identical.

Note: The Garmin App is no longer compatible with the iPhone 4/4S through Kenwood's KCA-IP202 iPod video cable.

    Audio Section

Excelon Series: The DDX5901HD DVD receiver is part of Kenwood's Excelon series line-up. It incorporates the latest technologies and delivers the highest sonic performance. From advanced audio tuning capabilities, crossover and equalizer system, high-voltage 5V preouts, plus a two-year warranty - Kenwood Excelon represents exceptional audio quality with long-lasting dependability.

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Kenwood DDX5901HD utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality with a Signal-to-Noise ratio up to 98dB.

MOSFET Amplifier: The Kenwood DDX5901HD is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the DDX5901HD are as follows:

    • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels

6ch/5V Preamp Outputs + Sub Control: The DDX5901HD features front, rear and subwoofer 5-volt preamp outputs. The front and rear speaker preamp outputs are balance and fade adjustable. The subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. You can adjust the subwoofer output's Phase (0° or 180°) and Level (-50to +10dB).

Digital Signal Processing (DSP): In order to optimize the sound quality, you can use the unit's DSP to set the type of vehicle, speaker sizes & locations, listening distances, and x-over points.

    • Car Type: Select your car type to automatically set the Delay Time of each speaker for timing adjustment of sound output of each channel to have the highest surround effect. Choose from Compact, Full Size Car, Wagon, Mini Van, SUV, or Off
    • Listening Position + Digital Time Alignment: For a better sound-stage you can select your optimal listening position. You can choose from All, Front Left, Front Right or Front. You can also select to manually fine tune the sound stage, using Digital Time Alignment (DTA) by selecting the distance (0-20') for each individual speaker in the vehicle compared to your listening position.
    • Speaker Location: You can set the location of your vehicle's Front and Rear speakers. The Front speakers can be set to Door, On Dash, or Under Dash. The Rear speakers can be set to Door, Rear Deck, 2nd Row, or 3rd Row.
    • Speaker Size: You can select the speaker size for your Front and Rear speakers (including tweeter), as well as your subwoofer. The Front and Rear speakers can be set to OEM, 3.5", 4", 4.75", 5", 6.5", 6.75", 7", 4x6", 5x7", 6x8", 6x9", or 7x10". The tweeter can be set to Small, Middle, Large, or None. The Subwoofer can be set to 6.5", 8", 10", 12", or 15"+. Select None if you have no Rear speaker or sub.
    • X'Over: The head unit features independent Front & Rear high-pass crossovers, as well as a subwoofer low-pass crossover. The Front & Rear high-pass crossovers and Subwoofer low-pass crossover can be set to 50, 60, 80, 100, 120, 150, 180, or 220Hz; slope of -6, -12, -18, or -24 dB per octave (or select Full-Range).
Note: You can also choose to bypass the head unit's DSP feature.

Equalizer: The DDX5901HD offers 10 preset EQs for easy adjustment and a 7-band parametric EQ for fine-tuning. You can select from Flat, Natural, Rock, Pops, Easy, Top 40, Jazz, Powerful, iPod (you can select from 22 EQ curve types within your iPod), or User (customized 7-band EQ). The 7-band equalizer consists of 62.5Hz, 160Hz, 400Hz, 1kHz, 2.5kHz, 6.3khz, & 16kHz frequencies which can be adjusted from -9 to +9dB.

Note: Separate EQ settings and EQ preset are stored for each source (Disc, Tuner, USB, iPod, Bluetooth, and Pandora/iHeart Radio).

Bass Management: The DDX5901HD offers Bass Boost, Bass DC Extension, and Loudness.

    • Bass Boost: The DDX5901HD features a four-step Bass Boost (Off/1/2/3) to enhance your music's lower frequencies.
    • Bass DC Extension: When turned on, frequencies lower than 6.25 Hz are set the same gain level as the unit's 7-Band EQ 62.5 Hz gain setting.
    • Loudness: This function enhances low and high frequencies to make the sound clearer lower volumes.

Volume Level Adjustment: The navigation receiver offers several volume level adjustment to tailor the audio output of your sources.

    • Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to +6.
    • Drive EQ: Drive EQ setting automatically optimizes the sound quality to meet the current volume level.
    • Dynamic Range: The dynamic range can be adjusted by selecting either Normal, Wide or Dialog. Dialog makes the total sound volume become larger as compared with Wide and Normal, allowing you to listen to the movie's dialogue more clearly. This is effective only on Dolby Digital software.

Key Beep: The in-dash navigation head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    AV Connection

Dual A/V Inputs: The Kenwood DDX5901HD DVD receiver is fitted with two rear-panel audio/video inputs. The both AV inputs consist of a 3.5mm jack for connection of an external AV source; such as TV tuner, Blu-ray player, or game system. The AV-2 input also serves as the A/V input for your USB-connected iPod (using proprietary Kenwood cable).

HDMI/MHL Input: The In addition to Apps mode for iPhone and Android, the head unit's HDMI/MHL input can be used to connect almost any external mobile AV source with an HDMI output; such as a TV tuner, Blu-ray player, or game system. The HDMI input will provide video and audio playback. Your vehicle's parking brake will need to be engaged to view video on the receiver's screen. Playback functions will need to be controlled from your HDMI-connected device.

A/V Output (with Dual Zone): The unit features a composite video jack and 3.5mm audio jack to output A/V signals to an optional monitor and headphone system. The unit's A/V output can be set to Disc, AV-1, USB, iPod, or Off. You can adjust the volume of the 2nd Zone independently from 0 to 35. You can select between a 16:9, 4:3 LB, or 4:3 PS Aspect Ratio for the unit's video output to match your connected monitor.

Note: Different sources from iPod/iPhone cannot be set as front and rear sources independently. Only one iPod/iPhone source can be set as front and rear sources. Apps mode and the HDMI/MHL input are not available to the second zone.

Camera Input: The unit features a composite video input for connecting an optional rear view camera, such as the Kenwood CMOS-220 (113CMOS220, sold separately). The video from this connection can be set to display when switched to this input, or display the rear view camera video automatically when the vehicle is shifted into Reverse gear. The purple/white wire (attached to rear-chassis) must be connected to the vehicle's reverse lamp circuit for automatic video switching. Automatic video switching takes approximately 1.5 seconds.

    OEM/Remote Control

OEM Integration: This Kenwood DVD receiver is compatible with the iDatalink Maestro RR (794ADSMRR, sold separately); a web programmable module that will permit the aftermarket Kenwood head unit to work with select Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles that feature the factory SYNC system; as well as select GM vehicles with factory OnStar; and  select Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep vehicles with U-Connect. The iDatalink Maestro RR lets Ford/Lincoln/Mercury, GM. and Dodge/Chrysler owners swap out their factory radio for this aftermarket Kenwood head unit; while retaining the Ford Sync system, GM OnStar system, Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep U-Connect system, steering wheel controls, Bluetooth, USB interface, Satellite Radio, and 911 assist. You also get to keep the hands-free mic that comes with the car (which is specially tuned to that particular vehicle). In some installations, the iDatalink Maestero RR lets you configure the head unit to operate interior climate controls and provides extra visual data; such as User Selectable Gauges, Vehicle Info (Tire Pressure/Battery Voltage/Check Engine Codes/Door Ajar Warning), and Visual Park Assist.

    • Ford/Lincoln/Mercury: When installed in a compatible Ford/Lincoln/Mercury vehicle, the iDatalink Maestro RR requires the use of the iDatalink Maestro ADS-HRN(SR)-FOR01 installation harness (794HRNSRF1, sold separately) and must also be connected to your Windows PC so it can be flashed with the  SR-FOR01-DS2 firmware update.
    • GM: When installed in a compatible GM vehicle, the iDatalink Maestro RR requires the use of the iDatalink Maestro ADS-HRN(SR)-GMS05 installation harness (794HRNGMS5, sold separately) and must also be connected to your Windows PC so it can be flashed with the SR-GMS05-DS firmware update.
    • Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep: When installed in a compatible Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep vehicle, the iDatalink Maestro RR requires the use of the iDatalink Maestro installation harness (794HRNSRC1, sold separately) and must also be connected to your Windows PC and flashed so it can be flashed with the SR-CHR01-DS firmware update.
Note: The Kenwood head unit features an OEM Setup menu that must be configured with your compatible vehicle's factory system before initial operation.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input wire (blue/yellow) within the included wiring harness that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

Optional Remote Control: The optional Kenwood KNA-RCDV331 IR wireless remote control (113RCDV331, sold separately) unit is designed to operate this Kenwood navigation head unit. The wireless remote controller operates off of two supplied "AAA" batteries. The remote operates off of IR transmission so the KNA-RCDV331 must be pointed at the front-panel of the Kenwood head unit within direct line of sight.

    Kenwood Excelon DDX5901HD Great Radio

This radio is a quantum improvement over the Belkin transmitter I was using to listen to my iPod in my 2002 CRV. The sound is vastly improved even though I am still using the factory speakers. Installation was fairly easy using Posi-Products car stereo connectors (extra cost) and the Crutchfield provided Metra dash kit and Metra wiring harness. The HD radio and other features are awesome. The only question is why I waited so long to replace the factory radio/CD player.

Pros: 1. Good for iPod usage 2.Great radio 3.Many features

Cons: 1. Instructions are barely adequate. (Check the internet - especially on vehicle radio removal) 2.The red wire on the Kenwood harness looked dark orange instead of true red

Good Features except with Samsung Note 3

Had unit installed in 2005 Ford Thunderbird. Install instructions from Crutchfield OK but Kenwood manual is lacking. Installer had to pull unit to correct installation a couple of times. Sound quality and screen responsiveness is pretty good. Big improvement over stock unit. HD radio, I Heart Radio and Bluetooth all work well. AM reception is not very good and hard to tune. Not a deal breaker. Touchscreen controls integration with Samsung Note 3 does not work. Apparently it will work with other Samsung phones. Samsung offers a MHL 5 to 11 pin adapter but it has been out of stock from quite a long time. No other adapters will work.

    Pros: Features and HD Radio

Cons: Touchscreen controls will not work with the Samsung Note 3. Kenwood manual is very lacking.

    Not what I expected

Bought this along with an iDatalink Maestro steering wheel control for a 2005 Ford F-150 Lariat with factory sub. Also purchased Alpine SPS-517 speakers for all four doors. There was an immediate sound improvement overall and I was initially very happy. Installation was straight forward and instructions were well written. However, I soon started to encounter problems.

    1. When I start my vehicle using the remote start, the unit activates the Bluetooth connection with my iPhone 5s and starts playing music off of it. My phone will be in the house but still in Bluetooth range and will just start blaring music from songs I have downloaded on it. Or, once I hop in the truck, the unit will automatically switch over to Pandora or iPod and start playing.

    2. If I tune into a non HD radio station, the station turns fuzzy once I turn my headlights on.

    3. There is a high pitch noise that occasionally comes from my speakers. It sounds like a tuning fork and lasts anywhere from 15 seconds to 5 minutes. I have no idea if this is because of the speakers or because of the head unit.

    4. The interface looks old and isn't as user friendly as I thought it would be.

I will be returning this unit and trying another.

    Great Unit

Installed in my 2012 GMC Sierra. Radio is great. Love having the HD receiver. Screen is responsive and easy to navigate. Installation only took about an hour with dash panel removal and some modifications to the inner dash and the included installation kit. Installed the Maestro interface module and harness with external speaker to keep my factory steering wheel controls, chimes, backup features, and onstar. Would purchase again.

Pros: Interface is very responsive, easy installation with idatalink maestro kit. Use of data connection for displaying Waze navi from my phone to head unit, BT handsfree calling and audio streaming is very nice!

Cons: Would like to be able to customize the screen icons so I can break out the vehicle OEM functions to the main screen but not a big deal.

    In it's own class, period.

Hand down the best deck for your money. Recently purchased a pioneer Avh series, and was dissapointed. Did some research and came to this. Quality, user friendly, looks sharp, and transitions seemlesly. From I pad to I phone, to MP3, to Android, to flash drive, to CD, to pandora, to I heart radio, to Movie, to back up camera. Added power from the deck dramatically improves sound quality regardless, of your set up. Has 12 EQ Profiles, as well as ability to add endless custom ones. Ability to control just the Sub also fantastic. This HU also is car type specific, from compact, to truck, to SUV etc, and when you do update it, the sound will blow your mind. Much more user friendly then my Pioneer. Yes you will have to buy a few cords, but that's with any quality deck. Bluetooth connectivity works great, but manual connection is much better in sound quality, and that's any deck. Glare issue/brightness is an angle issue, and very easy to adjust.

    Pros: Everything

Cons: Did not get sooner, had to suffer through the Pioneer.

    Awesome!

Easy to use. Great sound quality. Installed in a 2013 F-150 with Sync along with the iDatalink Maestro. Everything works great! The wiring harness for the iDatalink made this a simple install. So much better than the stock head unit

Nice unit. Performs all functions that I needed, especially the hands free calling. Mounted mic on steering column. Much better voice pic up than running wire up A post to visor. Overall very pleased with quality of unit. Sync with iPhone in seconds. Still using factory speakers, definitely improved sound, but speaker upgrade recommended.

Pros: Decent price. Quality unit. Fast shipping and tech advice. Purchased Tundra bezel kit as well, installation looks factory and flawless.

Cons: Hard to see in daytime. Glare is issue in Florida sun, but some of that is due to angle of Tundra dash. No detailed instructions on dash disassembly from Crutchfield, You Tube saved me on that.

Replaced broken stock RER unit in jeep wrangler. Couldn't afford the $1500 replacement. This unit works ok. Expensive cables for iphone 5 MHL hookup. Used it once, apps dont really work well on the screen.. Its decent for youtube and Waze. Truthfully I play my music through the bluetooth and even that has connectivity issues.

    Pros: Interface is pretty decent

Cons: Connectivity to iphone both wired and bluetooth are lackluster and frustrating

This is a great head unit and is capable of pretty much everything you can imagine.......even GPS when you mirror your iPhone or iPad to it with a maps app........I assume Droids work like this as well. Definitely a bargain for the features it has.

Pros: Great Bluetooth connectivity and the ability to mirror you iPad or iPhone makes so many more entertainment features available, as well as letting you use maps apps on the screen while driving.......oops, that is a no no......but it's possible......or watch Netflix or Hulu.

Cons: None that I have discovered so far.

Frustrated with the poor sound quality of the factory radio, even after upgrading all the speakers with new Infinity 6 x 8's and tweeters in the front doors, I took the plunge and bought this radio along with the Idatalink Maestro. After a fairly simple install, the quality of the sound was an instant improvement right out of the box with zero adjustments. After a few tweaks to the EQ, the whole thing came alive. DVD's sound incredible with the Dolby Digital surround, HD radio crystal clear, satellite radio great of course and you can even pause/FF/RW it also that I didn't know it did until after reading the manual. Navigating USB audio is equally good. The addition of the Maestro unit seamlessly integrates the truck and radio together, and adds other neat features as well. The feature set of the radio is so vast, it can be a bit overwhelming at first, but for the most part is very intuitive. I currently have a Windows phone which works ok, but it limits the capabilities of the radio. Use an iPhone or Android based phone and this radio will be everything you will ever need. I plan on adding a backup camera, amp, and sub to further enhance this already great head unit.

Pros: More features than the space shuttle at a great value! Fantastic audio and video!

    Cons: I don't have a more compatible phone. :(

Overall, this is a great receiver with excellent sound, nice and user friendly interface, and a good feature set. This (and only several other new Kenwood receivers) has aptX bluetooth codec for the best quality audio streaming via bluetooth. It sounds great, as does HD radio. SiriusXM is plug and play with a receiver and sounds good (limited by the technology of satellite radio). Bluetooth pairing also works great, and within 10-15 seconds after turning on the receiver it connects without fail. NEVER loses connection (unlike so many other receivers I've tried)... this is invaluable. The interface is clean and customizable to some degree (changing which icons appear on the home screen), which is nice. Phone calling via bluetooth works well too., and the cheapo microphone does its job (and does usefully tilt up/down in addition to swiveling).

The main con is that the screen is matte and not nearly bright enough to be legible in bright/direct sunlight. As in, completely washed out. Also, the screen frequently changes automatically from showing the song/artist/album/channel info (mostly when in bluetooth/SiriusXM mode) to showing a few, gigantic control buttons at the expense of the music info. It would be fine if it did not turn on automatically and if it could be turned off, but you can't. The best you can do is to toggle to the music info screen by hitting a button but soon enough it will appear again, and that gets old really fast.

Pros: 1. Sound quality, esp. bluetooth streaming (via aptX codec) and HD radio. 2. SiriusXM "ready" so you can connect a plug and play SiriusXM receiver. 3. Customizable home screen. 4. Bluetooh pairing ease, auto connect speed and reliability (never loses connection). 5. HD radio built in, which sounds great.

Cons: 1. Screen is not bright enough. Completely washed out and illegible in bright/direct sunlight. 2. Screen will automatically change from music info to a screen with enormous buttons (like three in the entire screen) that you have to turn off each time and there is no way in the settings to turn this annoying feature off. 3. Low resolution screen. Album artwork, even though small in size on the screen, looks terrible due to the low res screen. I would guess DVDs don't look great either.

Replaced the stock sound system in a Mustang GT with the Kenwood DDX5901HD, and whats not to like? HD radio sounds great even with the stock speakers! Loaded with features - Bluetooth (phone and audio), backup camera ready, Sirius ready, AV Video In/Out, USB port, Pandora and iHeart Radio, etc.. With the ADS MUS-1 kit and iDatalink Maestro integration, the built in steering wheel controls all work (with dual functions), Siri Voice integration for hands-free calling and voice text messaging works great. The iDatalink integration gives me access to OEM features like custom engine gauges, tire pressures, battery readings, doors open and OBD2 codes and diagnostics. Even though it doen't have navigation, you can use an iPhone app with the AV IN to provide navigation.

Like I said before, whats not to like!

Pros: Great fit, features and sound! Volume knob is a nice thing to have.

Cons: A little delay when turned on - annoying, but not a show stopper. Dual USB ports would be great.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently installed this head unit into my 2015 Subaru WRX last weekend (not confirmed for fit on Crutchfield website, but dash layout is very similar to 2014 model, and the supplied adapter fits well, with slight modification). I mainly purchased this head unit for it's Android functionality, and being able to use the Google Maps app on my phone without the need to awkwardly prop up my phone or use a standalone gps unit, or pay for a more pricier head unit with gps built in. I purchased the Kenwood KCA-MH100 cable to connect my HTC One (M7), and pairing worked almost instantly. I was then able to play audio and display my phone's screen directly on the head unit, and it was wonderful and all sounded nice too. Having used this radio frequently over the past few days, the same concerning issues have arisen each time, and I am hoping that it is only something I am doing wrong, because this truly is a quality receiver. After around 5-10 minutes of solid functionality, the whole radio unit becomes...sluggish. To the point where it's almost unusable...When I turn the volume knob one click, it will take seconds for the command to register (often 15 or more seconds, which is unacceptable for such a basic function). Switching inputs, say from the apps mode back to the HD Radio, will often take 30 seconds to a minute or more for the radio to go back to the home screen, and then to load up the next command I input.. When the unit is restarted, functionality is restored momentarily.

Pros: 5V pre-amp outs make my Alpine speakers and JL Audio sub hit hard and loud. Display is clear, easy, and very quick to navigate once you get the hang of it. Apps feature is definitely worth the price of the required cable. Can't get built-in Pandora or iHeartRadio apps to work, but like another reviewer said, I may just have to play with the Bluetooth on my phone for a bit, as I really want these features.

Cons: All functionality essentially breaks after roughly 5 minutes of using the head unit. Sluggish to non-existent response from both physical buttons and touch screen. Restarting unit returns quickness, but only for another several minutes of use. Will attempt to contact Kenwood customer support to see if anything can be done. With all the other positive reviews, I really hope my unit is either defective or I am doing something incorrect. Will update if anything changes.

Installed into 2014 Mustang V6 Base went smooth with MUS01 kit and ADS-MRR. Can use Android HTC 4g LTE with generic MHL/HDMI cable to view and control phone from Kenwood screen. Allows use of Android GPS such as iGo or TomTom, saving the cost of HU with GPS built-in, yet still having nearly all the features! Integration with Mustang system is excellent, with added bonus of 4 tire TPMS (for example), instead of Mustang low pressure warning without specifics. On screen selectable Gauges are another plus. Cheap backup camera fully functions automatically or manually. HD Radio allows skipping sat radio fees.

Pros: Huge upgrade over stock system that places car into the hi-tech 21st century instead of stone age stock.

Cons: Screen is a little dim in bright sunlight (as expected). Android to MHL/HDMI took several attempts at getting the Bluetooth pairing to work before Android was controllable using Kenwood touchscreen. Internet search said keep trying, turning on/off/on phones Bluetooth, and sure enough, after a dozen tries, it connected. Now it connects within seconds every time. Just get over that first connection hump and good to go. Run Kenwood app on phone, select apps from HU, good luck.

Very cool radio! I haven't figured out everything yet, but it has all the capabilities that I was looking for with a new receiver.

I installed the HDMI and Apple Lightning Digital AV Adapter and other cables (all non-Kenwood). Note that the HDMI port on the back of the unit is very narrow, so if you plan to purchase a high quality HDMI cable for this, it may not fit (I purchased this one and it would not fit).

The Bluetooth works great and I haven't used the iPhone mirror function much yet, although that is one of the primary reasons I purchased this over other units. With Bluetooth it will display album covers and track info using both Pandora and as an iPod. Also navigation voice instruction will play over the speakers when in use with other sources. There is a 15 second or so delay to begin playing Pandora or iPod songs, which isn't too bad.

Overall I am very impressed with the radio thus far. Having the ability for future upgrades with the HDMI input and such makes it a great long-term unit.

Pros: HDMI input, iPhone 5S mirror capabilities, Bluetooth, HD Radio, App Control, etc

Pretty awesome radio. I brought life to Bose system in my RX8 don't see myself needing a speak or a amp. I just use my regular usb phone cable to connect my ipod and it works perfect no kenwood cable required. I took me a hour or so to figure out how to get my ipod to actually play. You just have to put the radio in regular FM mode and then go change the input settings for ipod to USB only. The bluetooth for my andriod also works perfectly plays pandora, my regular phone music, voice calls and gps audio. Haven't tried any videos on it yet though.

    Pros: Excellent Quality

Cons: Took me a while to figure out how to get my ipod to play.

I recently purchased this head unit for my car, I had a Kenwood and replaced it with a new one because the Sirius was acting up. Well the new one is not compatible with any older Sirius units, so now I have to pay to switch my service, AND I had a removable one, now it's locked into my car. The app features on this radio are 100% useless, unless you have a bunch of cords (sold separately) which defeats the entire idea of Bluetooth, also who wants all these cords everywhere? I hate this radio. It is a step down from my old Kenwood in every way. I unfortunately now am committed to this now that I have already changed everything and paid a fortune for this useless brick in my dash. I wish I would have bought a different radio.

    Pros: It plays music

Cons: App function is worthless, no video streams through blue tooth at all. Not compatible with any Sirius product that's a few years old. Phone app is annoying . Lots of features that you can buy extra cords and add ons to use, if you have a cavity in your dash the size of a basket ball.

All I can say is... WOW!!! This isn't the most intuitive product but the end result is amazing. It's taking me sometime to get used to the functions. But as I figure something out I am thoroughly impressed. There are so many positives about this unit and the previous poster's have already mentioned it all. However, the manual just downright stinks!!!... I would give it 5 stars if it was a little easier to figure out and if the manual was a lot more helpful. I had this installed with all Hertz Audio ( comps & sub & 5channel amp ). The Kenwood & Hertz marriage has been mind blowing!

Pros: Crutchfield's customer service is second to none!

    Cons: The Manual

I bought this in an attempt to mirror my iPhone 5s, mostly for Apple Maps and Spotify. It works! You set bluetooth to the HDMI mode. Once the lightning digital AV cable is connected, you just press "apps" and it mirrors. Only some apps have full touch screen control like Waze GPS and iHeartRadio, but there are generic controls for Play, Pause, FF, next, etc. So for me, I can plug in my iPhone, tell Siri to take me to my destinations, tell her to open Spotify, then I can follow the map on my Head Unit, and press the screen to skip songs or pause Spotify. If I want full control over apps, I control them from the phone. The only thing left would be to mirror the phone with full touchscreen control for all apps, but it'd probably be up to Apple to create that interface. Bluetooth by itself is great on the Head Unit. I can have my phone in my pocket and control my iTunes music as well as Pandora right from the HU. Receiving phone calls is also seamless. Just press the answer button. Having a smartphone connected to your radio is cool, but having a head unit that can play Sirius, HD Radio, Pandora, iHeartRadio, and then mirror your entire phone with on-screen controls is pretty amazing. That said, the screen washes out pretty bad in sunlight. You can turn up the brightness and black levels, but sometimes you just can't see the display. Also, programming channels on HD Radio and Sirius is a little tricky at first. Just gotta refer to the manual a couple times.

Pros: HDMI. Great smartphone companion with App controls. Advanced Bluetooth capabilities. Volume knob.

Cons: Screen washes out in direct sunlight.

I would like to start off by saying, i really enjoy this unit. The playback through Bluetooth is amazing. DVD is crystal clear (when the screen isn't washed out by sunlight). Seeing gauges is nice along with warnings. Before i couldn't ever tell what my tire pressure was from my display, only that one was low and then i had to figure out which tire. Now i can see exactly what the tire pressure is, but the tires are the exact opposite. The car is basically turned around on the display.. I have not figured out the app mode, yet. I have an iPhone 4 and can' t seem to get any apps to appear in app mode. It does state in the manual that i can do this through Bluetooth, still, no results. Sound quality is great with HD radio. I'm shocked how much better it really is. I've never had that option before. Right now my tweeters are way too harsh but the ability to eq them down to a reasonable level really helps solidify this unit. Overall this is a great unit, but does have cons. No motorized face for glare adjustment,(understandable bc it is a slot loading unit). The screen washes out extremely easy in sunlight, (i will try to install deeper into my dash).

I bought this unit to connect to my existing Uconnect system, and it does thanks to the meastro RR. The problem is, it sounds terrible. Very grainy and compressed. incredibly disappointing considering the extra cost.

This unit is by no means cost effective. There are other units that have similar feature for 100 less.

Pros: Bluetooth clarity, audio options, eq, dvd, easy parking brake grounding.

Cons: Hard to see during the sunny days, which here in TX it happens often.

The title says it all. You do not need your white iPhone/iPod cable to connect to this unit. It can do the same through Bluetooth. With the exception of video (lightning cable didn't do that either) you have full iPod/Sirius/iHeartRadio control. I originally bought this model for the HDMI/HML capabilities. Those functions work just fine if a little clumsy. In reality, the app mode doesn't hold a candle to the bluetooth capabilities. This radio supports what's called Bluetooth SPP (serial port protocol) which means remote operation of your phone over bluetooth. It acts just like you plugged in your lightning cable (I have an iPhone 5 so I can't really comment on Android operation). It just works. I also like the fact it has the capability to integrate with your car's CAN bus if you connect the separate Maestro module. I don't have a car that nice so I didn't add it. I love that I can keep my phone in my pocket and still have full control over it. Built-in HD Radio is also nice. After that glowing recommendation, I do have one slight complaint about this unit. I have owned touchscreen Kenwood radios from the 2010 models to the present and I think they change LCD vendors every now and then. My previous radio was a DDX470 and I believe that it had a better display. The display on the DDX5901HD washes out more in direct sunlight than it predecessor but is still useable to me. Might be something to think about depending on where in you dash the radio will be.

Pros: LOTS of connection options Awesome Bluetooth functionality (SPP) More sound shaping options than you can shake a stick at Best sound quality of any Kenwood I have ever owned

Cons: Slight LCD washout in direct sunlight but buy it anyway, I'm sure you'll love it.
