Average Customer Review:
2007 Scion tC
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
Ease of Use
All is good with this unit. I hired an installer to do it for me. Great sound, lots of features. My main complaint is that the install kit does not include a way to close the cover door in my Scion tc. The door hits the unit long before closing. If you remove the door there is a large obvious gap at the top. I have to say that had I known this I probably would have bought something else.

Ease of Use
Love this radio. I wanted a radio that displayed my WAZE app while listening to radio and hands free calling. Crutchfield support was great with any questions during my install. Timely responses kept my install moving.
Pros: App display. Bluetooth. Crutchfield support
Cons: Listening to radio while displaying apps wasn't self evident. Reading directions help.
Good in theory but extremely GLITCHY
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
Ease of Use
In theory this unit is great. The layout, the features, it looks great and the interface looks better than CarPlay. The unit also sounds amazing. But this thing has more glitches and bugs than you can imagine. I had an iPhone 5 and an iPhone 6 used with this unit and the DDX7701HD just gave me a huge headache. I have it connected through HDMI and Bluetooth. - sometimes music plays through my phone and not the stereo. I have to restart the unit or unplug and plug it again. - sometimes music won't play at all. Gotta do the above mentioned. - takes about a minute to connect, read and play once the car starts. - album art has to load every single time even if you're playing one album. - sometimes when receiving a call the unit has a brain freeze and I cannot hear the person through the speakers even though it says on my phone that the voice call is being received through the Kenwood Unit. - after a call, sometimes, it'll play the first song on my iPod as opposed to continuing playback. - touch screen for hitting next song or back is delayed by several seconds. - occasionally gets hiccups, this unit acts like its confused and doesn't know what you are trying to get it to do.
Kenwood release very little updates. They need plenty of bug fixes for this unit.
Pros: - great sound. - Bluetooth calls are clear - ideal interface if it works the way it's supposed to. - great quality build
Cons: - Glitchy - lots of bugs - software has way too many issues and Kenwood does not release any bug fixes.
Ease of Use
Honestly exactly as it is advertised. Simple installation and set up. Very user friendly interface and easily to learn your way to navigate through the many features.
Pros: Customizable Sounds amazing Crisp clean look Very easy to jnstall
Cons: Need wires to connect gps

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
To start off the stereo looks and sounds great it just does not work right with my 5S iPhone I bought a less expensive Kenwood Stereo first, and it sounded as good as this one, but it to would not interact right with the 5s IPhone when I talked with The tech at Crutchfield and was told that I need one with HDMI I sent my old one back and orderd the DDX7701HD after I got it hooked up as the tech told me, it still does not interact with my iPhone 5S so I called back to Crutchfield and talked with a tech and he tried to figured out why it would mirror the image but not interact, so called another tech the nextday, and he to could not figure it out so he told me, that him and the other tech would come up with a 5s phone and try to figure it out and call me back. It's been three weeks and have not herd anything from either one of the techs, so I will be sending this one back, and get the less expensive one sense neither one interact with my phone
Pros: Sounds good and looks great
Cons: Won't interact Won't play music DVDsCrutchfield response on August 19, 2014 Our Tech Support team hates to be baffled by a problem like this. They will figure it out and get back to you. We're sorry it's taken so long and they haven't been in touch.

A quality head unit. Makes the dash look super clean and the dash kit that comes with it is perfect. makes it look super stock
Pros: easy install, easy to use,
Cons: would be over the top cool if the screen was glass
Great product for the money
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
Wanted a to replace the factory unit in my Silverado to add a rearview camera and video capability. Has a few issues but overall its a great product. Some of the issues could be the maestro wire harness but without removing that and direct wiring I cant be sure.
Pros: Easy to install, lots of great features. Love that I can manually view the rearview camera whenever I want without a toggle switch. Pictures is clear although a little difficult to see in sunlight.
Cons: The ipod controls are a little usless. While I can go forward in tracks, it takes so long to process the up or down selection for songs that you cant go back. Ive tried it both Bluetooth and wired and both take several seconds to process that you changed a song. Also am unable to get the iheartradio app to be able to use the touchscreen. I have tried hardwiring with the correct cable and all it says is check app. I have to change songs on the phone.Crutchfield response on July 1, 2014 We forwarded this review to our Technical Support team for follow-up. Lifetime tech support comes with every Crutchfield purchase.
Great Unit! - Kenwood DDX7701HD
2011 Volkswagen Jetta
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
Ease of Use
This unit is definitely full of many different features. With a wide selection of features many users would find themselves discovering something new even weeks after their purchase. The HD radio quite a difference from what I was used to. Even one of my local AM stations that I have been listening to for years had a distinctive increase in quality. Features such as the smartphone integration and rear view camera capability are gladly welcomed to those that will make use of it. I am still waiting to upgrade my iPhone so that I can try the HDMI mirroring feature. I commute to and from work 50+ miles a day and smile every time I enter my car and turn on the stereo.
Pros: -Smartphone Integration is simple -Bluetooth pairing of iPhone by simply plugging in (Optional) USB cable attachment -Customizable home screen -Optional connection for iPhone 4 or 5
Cons: -Price is high -Can be hard to configure to the user's liking if not tech savvy
This Reciever DELIVERS!
Ease of Use
Just installed in my 2008 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off Road Crew Cab. What an AMAZING improvement to the stock speaker performance. I can only imagine how much better the sound quality will be once I upgrade speakers. Rich bass performance. Highs could stand to be a little crisper. Overall, this Kenwood delivers. I love the Android compatibility. Just plug in your adapter into your phone, and have full control off all the apps, music, movies, pictures, and all the features your Android device offers. Seamless contol of my Samsung Galaxy S4. Price point is a little high, although the Kenwood DDX7701HD will not disappoint you.
Pros: - Android compatibility. - Amazing sound quality. - Features, features, features!
Cons: - Price is high. - Display difficult to see in direct light. - Would be nice if the large home screen buttons could be turned off. Leave the small buttons at the bottom of the screen only. Would make pictures on the home screen more enjoyable.
Killer new head unit
2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)
Ease of Use
Just put the Kenwood DDX7701HD into my 2013 Silverado 1500. I love this head unit. It made the factory speakers sound worlds better. It's very reasonably priced for what it does and saves money on needing gps since I can use the AppRadio mode and use Waze or even Apple Maps. However, you cannot use the touchscreen for Apps unless it is AppRadio compliant. Combining with the iDatalink Maestro I was able to retain all of my factory install stuff, like Onstar, chimes, use of the factory XM antenna, and even see a multitude of gauges, tire pressure sensors, and if the check engine light comes on, it can access and tell me what the error is. I like the fact that the Kenwood is a little plain and not obnoxious and kid focused like some of the Pioneers. There aren't a ton of apps available, but it seems to be expanding daily. Overall this unit is top notch and has all the bells and whistles I need. Only downside is interfacing with the Apple Lightning Adapter. I didn't want that ugly white adapter exposed in my cab with an hdmi and a lightning cable coming out of the dash. I purchased a Jive Cables Lightning Extension cable, which seems to be the only one working with AppRadio. The App features now work perfectly and there's only one cable coming out of the dash, however adding this cable, plus the lighting usb cable, plus the adapter, and the overall length of the built in USB cable means its very slow to charge my iPhone 5. Overall, great unit!
Pros: -Not too kid focused, heard a bit more toward older geeks. -iPhone 5 friendly -iDataLink interface = AWESOME -AppRadio Mode is killer.
Cons: -Slow to charge iPhone due to the LONG cable length required with the built in usb cable, then the lighting cable, then the Apple adapter...then the lightning extension cable. -Not a lot of AppRadio apps...but that is improving.

Ease of Use
Finally!!!! iphone 5 integration. a bit pricey but a nice unit.. As far as iphone 5 integration, it was a toss up between pioneer and kenwood. I went with the kenwood due to HDMI output. Also, I have always had good luck over the years with Kenwood audio.

The LCD touchscreen has a resolution of 800 (H) x 480 (V) x RGB with 1,152,000 total pixels. This unit has touchscreen controls with easy-to-identify icons, making menu navigation easy. The monitor electronically slides down for loading or ejecting a disc. The bottom of the touchscreen monitor can be tilted upward at six different positions to provide the best visibility in your vehicle (you can save any one of these positions to the head unit's memory).
- Customizable Home Screen: The Home Screen features 3 large source icons and 5 smaller source/setup icons. You can customize which 3 large source icons you want as your favorites, as well as customize 4 of the 5 smaller source/setup icons. The "All SRC" icon is not customizable; pressing this icon displays all source/setup icons on two pages.
- Custom Background Images: You can download a still image (800 x 600) for use as the unit's background from a connected USB thumbdrive.
- Picture Adjustment: You can adjust the unit's display brightness, contrast, color, tint, sharpness, and black level to suit your viewing needs during video playback.

If you attempt to view video without the parking brake engaged, the unit's LCD touchscreen will simply display a blue screen and "Parking Off". While your vehicle is in motion (parking brake off), you can still view all of the head unit's menu screens/settings, source information, metadata, and album artwork.

You'll be able to listen to stored music and music apps on your Lightning-connector Apple device through the Kenwood DVD receiver. To watch stored video and video apps (like Netflix) in addition to music from your Lightning-connector Apple device on the Kenwood DDX7701HD, you'll need Apple's Lightning-to-Digital AV adapter, a Lightning-to-USB cable, and a mobile-grade HDMI cable; such as the Kenwood KCA-HD100 (all sold separately) - this type of connection also requires Bluetooth pairing.
Note: You will need to select which type of connection method you are using in the head unit's setup menu.
iPod/iPhone Control: In addition to audio/video playback, the Kenwood DDX7701HD supports control, song/artist information display, and battery charging of your compatible Apple device.
- Head Unit Control: The Kenwood head unit allows you to navigate your iPod's music library by Playlist, Artists, Album, Song, Genre, Song, Podcast, or Audiobook. Your iPod's video library can be searched by Video Playlist, Movie, Music Video, TV Show, Video Podcast, Rented Movie, or iTunesU. You can then search each of these categories using the head unit's touchscreen slider function (categories will be listed in alphabetical order). You can even search your iPod's music library by Album Art and create a Favorite List, which contains an original playlist of your favorite 10 albums. In addition, the head unit offers Link Search, which allows you to play songs related to the currently playing song. Link Search lets the head unit create an album list of the currently playing artist, a song list of the currently playing album, a artist list of the currently playing genre, or a album list of currently playing composer. The head unit also supports basic playback functions such as Play/Pause, Fast Forward/Rewind, Previous/Next Track and Repeat/Random of your connected iPod/iPhone. Newer iPod/iPhones with iOS 6.0+ will still allow you to navigate stored music and movies from the Apple device's touchscreen, as well access music and video apps; older iPod/iPhone devices will be locked during connection.
- Song/Artist Info & Album Art: The DDX7701HD will display your iPod/iPhone's stored music information including Track number, Elapsed playing time, Song/Album title, Artist name, and Album art. Pandora and iHeart Radio will also display metadata information. Other music apps will only display song/artist information in Apps mode.
- Battery Charging: The head unit's USB connection provides 1A of current to power and charge your connected iPod/iPhone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position. This unit does not charge the iPad. If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it.
Apps Mode for iPhone & Android (via HDMI): You can listen to audio from stored music and music apps, watch video from stored movies and movie apps, and view navigation apps on your Lightning-connector iPhone (iOS 7+) or Android (OS 4.1+) smartphone, using the head unit's HDMI input and its Apps Mode. The head unit will mirror the display of your mobile device (not always full-screen) when in Apps Mode. Apps Mode also provides basic playback control for your iPhone from the receiver's touchscreen; basic playback functions include Play/Pause, Fast Forward/Rewind, and Previous/Next Track. You can even control your Android device from the head unit's touchscreen just like you would from the smartphone; this requires that your vehicle's parking brake be engaged (all other Apps mode functionality does not require the parking brake be engaged). Using either a compatible iPhone or Android smartphone, you can also exit App Mode and access Pandora, and iHeartRadio directly from the head unit's touchscreen with advance music navigation and control. In addition, the iPhone lets you access its stored music and video library from the head unit's touchscreen with advance search and playback control when connected via HDMI. While navigation maps from your smartphone can be displayed on the Kenwood head unit's touchscreen, the navigation app will still need to be controlled from your iPhone or Android device (unless you have the vehicle's parking brake engaged; in this case you can control Android maps from the head unit's touchscreen).
- iPhone Connectivity: If you have an iPhone with the Lightning connector, you will need Apple's Lightning Digital AV adapter, Lightning-to-USB cable, and a a mobile-grade HDMI cable; such as the Kenwood KCA-HD100 (sold separately). This type of connection also requires Bluetooth pairing. The HDMI connector provides the audio/video playback, while the USB connection charges your iPhone device. The Bluetooth connection allows you to control basic playback functions from the head unit.
- Android Connectivity: The head unit's HDMI port is MHL compatible; this means you can simply connect select MHL-compatible Android smartphones to the receiver via a MHL-to-HDMI cable; such as Kenwood's KCA-MH100 cable (sold separately). This type of connection also requires Bluetooth pairing and installation of the Kenwood Smartphone Control App from Google Play (may also require firmware update). The HDMI connector provides audio/video playback and charging of your Android smartphone's battery, while the Bluetooth connection is also needed for touchscreen control. Compatible Android smartphones include Samsung Galaxy *S3/S4/S5/Note II/III, Sony Xperia Z/Z1/ZR/ZL, and HTC One (all with OS 4.1+). *The Samsung Galaxy S3/4/5 and Note II/III requires an additional 3rd party MHL microUSB 5-pin to 11-pin adapter (sold separately).
Note: Access to your iPhone and Android smartphone 's downloaded applications will depend on the availability of a cellular and/or WiFi network for purposes of allowing your iPhone or Android smartphone to connect to the Internet. Not all Android and Apple iOS apps are guaranteed to be compatible.
Waze App: The DDX7701HD also supports the Waze navigation app (from iTunes & GooglePlay) for Apple iPhone with Lightning connector and Android via HDMI/MHL through the head unit's Apps Mode. You'll be able to view the Waze app from the Kenwood head unit's touchscreen. If you are using an Android smartphone, you can control Waze from the head unit's touchscreen when the vehicle's parking brake is engaged.
Garmin App (for iPhone w/ Lightning Connector): In addition, Apple's Lightning Digital AV adapter, Lightning-to-USB cable, and a a mobile-grade HDMI cable; such as the Kenwood KCA-HD100 (sold separately) allows you to view navigation maps and get audible/visual directions on the DDX7701HD's touchscreen, when the Garmin StreetPilot Onboard USA app ($49.99), and the Vehicle Display Integration in-app option ($49.99) are both downloaded to your connected iPhone with Lightning connector (7.0+). The Garmin StreetPilot Onboard USA app contains NAVTEQ map data for the United States (lower 49 states); with over a million POIs, turn-by turn directions, lane assist with junction view, traffic updates, and speed limit alerts. Because the map data is downloaded onto your iPhone and does not live on the network, wireless coverage is not required to navigate. Once you have selected your destination on your connected iPhone, your map route will be visible on the DDX7701HD's touchscreen (even with parking brake disengaged) and turn-by-turn directions can be heard through your car stereo speakers. You will continue to use your iPhone's touchscreen to control the Garmin StreetPilot USA app. The screen of your iPhone and the screen of the Kenwood DDX7701HD may not be identical.
Note: KThe Garmin App is no longer compatible with the iPhone 4/4S through Kenwood's KCA-IP202 iPod video cable.

Playback functions will need to be controlled from your HDMI-connected device.
A/V Output (with Dual Zone): The unit features a composite video jack and 3.5mm audio jack to output A/V signals to an optional monitor and headphone system. The unit's A/V output can be set to Disc, AV-1, USB, iPod, or Off. You can adjust the volume of the 2nd Zone independently from 0 to 35. The iDatalink Maestro RR lets Ford/Lincoln/Mercury, GM, Dodge/Chrysler, and VW owners swap out their factory radio for this aftermarket Kenwood head unit; while retaining the Ford Sync system, GM OnStar system, Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep U-Connect system, steering wheel controls, Bluetooth, USB interface, Satellite Radio, and 911 assist. You also get to keep the hands-free mic that comes with the car (which is specially tuned to that particular vehicle). In some installations, the iDatalink Maestero RR lets you configure the head unit to operate interior climate controls and provides extra visual data; such as User Selectable Gauges, Vehicle Info (Tire Pressure/Battery Voltage/Check Engine Codes/Door Ajar Warning), and Visual Park Assist.
Note: The iDatalink Maestro RR is web programmable, which means you'll need to flash the iDatalink Maestor RR interface module with the correct firmware from iDatalink's website. In addition to flashing the iDatalink Maestro RR module, you'll also need a vehicle specific harness (sold separately). The Kenwood receiver's OEM Setup menu must also be configured with your compatible vehicle's factory system before initial operation.
Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input wire (blue/yellow) within the included wiring harness that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.
Optional Remote Control: The optional Kenwood KNA-RCDV331 IR wireless remote control (113RCDV331, sold separately) unit is designed to operate this Kenwood navigation head unit. The wireless remote controller operates off of two supplied "AAA" batteries. The remote operates off of IR transmission so the KNA-RCDV331 must be pointed at the front-panel of the Kenwood head unit within direct line of sight.

2 answers Has anyone experience glare with this head unit or sunlight washing out the screen? I'm looking to replace my current aftermarket head unit and my main complaint with it is the glare.
