Screenus Maximus

So my Latin isn't so good, but the big 6.95" capacitive touch panel display on the Kenwood Excelon DDX9903S DVD receiver really is. You can access apps easily from your smartphone using Apple CarPlay™ or Android Auto™, and enjoy all kinds of radio, including HD Radio™, satellite radio, Pandora®, and iHeartRadio®. You can also bring your high-res music for incredible sonic detail on your travels. Kenwood also backs up this radio with a 2-year warranty.

Apps on the big screen

  • Android Auto™: If you're an Android fan, you'll love how Android Auto integrates the Android platform into your driving experience in a non-distracting way. You'll have voice control access to Google Maps, weather, music, your phone, text messages, plus easy access to many of your favorite apps. Get more info at www.android.com/auto.
  • Android and iPhone mirroring: By connecting your Android or iPhone to the rear HDMI/MHL input on the Kenwood, you can display your phone's screen on the receiver's large display for better viewing. Check the "Details" section for the cables you'll need.
  • Apple CarPlay™: CarPlay integrates your iPhone® into the driving experience in a new, seamless interface, putting iPhone content at the driver's fingertips with minimal distraction. That means easy access to your music library, your phone, messages, navigation, and many third-party streaming music apps, too. Learn more at www.apple.com/ios/carplay.
  • Phone swapping: If your family includes both iPhone and Android users, you simply plug in the phone you want to use with this Kenwood without having to choose a particular input or adjust menu settings for control.
  • Siri Eyes Free: With your compatible iPhone, you can take advantage of Siri Eyes Free functionality with a touch of the receiver's touchscreen, using your voice to place calls, select music, hear notification, add reminders — even compose and listen to text messages.

Customizable display

You can make the touchscreen display fit your needs by choosing from a wealth of colors and backgrounds, letting you tailor the look to match your vehicle. This Kenwood plays video content in bright, clear detail when you're parked. When you're on the road, you can entertain your passengers by sending a movie from the receiver to a rear-seat screen. You can also plug in front and rear-view cameras to play it safe in crowded parking lots.

Built-in HD Radio

HD Radio

The DDX9903S lets you enjoy HD Radio from participating stations, so you'll hear FM that's close to CD quality or AM that comes in clear and static-free. And if you're not in an area with HD Radio stations, don't worry — this Kenwood's sensitive radio tuner will pick up local analog stations, too.

Get satellite and Internet radio

Using the controls on the receiver, you can access your favorite Pandora® and iHeartRadio® Internet Radio stations from your iPhone or Android. You can also check out the incredibly deep programming offered by satellite radio by adding a SiriusXM tuner

Additional music options

You can also satisfy your music fix by using the receiver's DVD/CD player and connecting a portable music player to the rear aux input. And the rear USB port can also handle a thumb drive loaded with MP3, WMA, and AAC music, as well as higher-resolution WAV and FLAC music files.

Kenwood Excelon DDX9903S DVD receiver

The 6.95" display offers touchscreen controls to run Android Auto.

Total tone control

The powerful built-in amplifier sends a crisp, clear signal to your speakers, while the 13-band graphic equalizer boasts Kenwood's Drive EQ feature — when the radio is playing at lower levels, it boosts frequencies in the music that are most affected by road noise. The built-in DSP (digital sound processing) with digital time alignment lets you zero in on your perfect sound, while the three sets of 5-volt preamp outputs deliver an ultra-clean signal for adding additional amps for more power.

iDatalink Maestro lets you keep your factory extras

If your vehicle comes with factory add-ons like Ford SYNC®, GM OnStar®, Chrysler Uconnect™, and VW's media interface, you don't have to worry about losing your favorite conveniences to get navigation and better sound — the DDX9903S offers compatibility you won't find in many other aftermarket radios, thanks to the iDatalink Maestro module (not included).

  • Ford SYNC systems: you'll be able to retain voice-controlled features, steering wheel audio controls, and factory audio functions;
  • GM vehicles: you'll keep your steering wheel audio controls, your factory amp, safety warning chimes, and OnStar;
  • Chrysler: you'll keep all your Uconnect functionality;
  • Toyota: you'll keep your factory amplifer, auxiliary and USB inputs, rear-view camera, and steering wheel audio controls;
  • Volkswagen: you'll retain the factory Bluetooth, the factory digital amplifier and fader, plus VW's media device interface.

The iDatalink adapter also lets you tap into your vehicle's diagnostic port, so you can check out expanded functionality including gauges, climate controls, a distance sensor, and tire pressure monitor on the receiver's screen.

Note: This receiver is fully compatible with iDatalink's Maestro Module. If you purchased this receiver prior to October 8, 2016, Kenwood's website now offers a firmware update which will restore full iDatalink compatibility. Apply the firmware to your Kenwood receiver for support of factory extras; reflashing the iDatalink Maestro module is not necessary.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.

Bluetooth note: Use of this receiver's Bluetooth features will depend upon your phone's Bluetooth capabilities. Learn more in our article explaining Bluetooth profiles.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

    Touchscreen & Remote Control

6.95" Capacitive Touchscreen: The Kenwood Excelon DDX9903S features a 6.95" widescreen (16:9) capacitive touchscreen LCD with LED backlighting. The capacitive touchscreen LCD provides a high contrast ratio, crystal clear display, and vivid text. The LCD touchscreen has a resolution of 800 (H) x 480 (V) x RGB with 1,152,000 total pixels. The capacitive LCD touchscreen is highly responsive with touchscreen operations that include tap, tap & hold, flick left/right, and swipe up/down. The monitor electronically slides down for loading or ejecting a disc. The bottom of the touchscreen monitor can be tilted upward at six different positions to provide the best visibility in your vehicle (you can save any one of these positions to the head unit's memory).

    • Custom Home Screen & Shortcuts: You can customize the head unit's Home Screen by rearranging the icons and moving the icons of the seven most sources you use most to this screen. Three programmable shortcut source keys offer a quick jump to your favorite sources
    • Background Images: You can choose between six preset background images or download your own still image (800 x 600) for use as the unit's background from a connected USB thumbdrive.
    • Picture Adjustments: During video playback, you can adjust the touchscreen LCD monitor's backlight, contrast, black level, brightness, color, tint, and aspect ratio (Full/Normal/Auto/Original).
Note: To prevent the display of video while the vehicle is in motion, the light green wire (attached to rear chassis) must be connected to the vehicle's parking brake detection circuit. You cannot view video unless your vehicle's parking brake is engaged. If you attempt to view video without the parking brake engaged, the unit's LCD touchscreen will simply display a blue screen and "Parking Off". While your vehicle is in motion (parking brake off), you can still view all of the head unit's menu screens/settings, source information, metadata, and album artwork; as well as CarPlay, Android Auto, and Mirroring.

Front-Panel Controls w/ Variable Color Illumination: In addition to the touchscreen controls, the unit includes frequently used buttons along the bottom edge of the screen. You can adjust the head unit's button illumination, as well as display background color from the following preset colors - Blue, Purple, Sky Blue, Aqua, Yellow, Green, Amber, Red, Pink, White or Scan (Scans through all preset colors). You can also select a custom "User" color that is adjusted between Red, Green, and Blue (values range: 0-31). You can save up to 3 custom color presets. The Kenwood logo and eject button remain red, regardless of variable color illumination setting.

Dimmer: The dimmer function will dim the head unit's display & front-panel illumination automatically when your vehicle's light switch is turned On, if you have the unit's orange/white "Illumination" wire connected to your vehicle's headlamp circuit. You can also choose to dim the display manually. The Kenwood logo and eject button remain the same brightness.

Clock & Date: The DVD receiver offers a 12-hour clock & day/month/year display. The clock is visible from any source or menu screen. With your vehicle's key in the accessory or start position, the head unit will continue to display the LCD background image, clock, and button illumination during "Standby" mode. Pressing and holding the Power/Home button turns the unit off completely.

Remote Control: The Kenwood DDX9903S offers compatibility with factory steering wheel controls (adapter sold separately) and is compatible with Kenwood's IR wireless remote control (sold separately) for added convenience.

    • Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input wire (blue/yellow) within the included wiring harness that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately).
    • Optional Remote Control: The optional Kenwood KNA-RCDV331 IR wireless remote control (113RCDV331, sold separately) unit is designed to operate this Kenwood DVD head unit. The wireless remote controller operates off of two supplied "AAA" batteries. The remote operates off of IR transmission so the KNA-RCDV331 must be pointed at the front-panel of the Kenwood head unit within direct line of sight.

Security Indicator: The Security Indicator feature helps to protect the Kenwood DDX9903S against theft. Turning this function "On" allows the security indicator light (red) on the front-panel of the head unit to flash when your vehicle's ignition is off.

    Built-in Bluetooth

Bluetooth Technology: The Kenwood Excelon DDX9903S is equipped with built-in Bluetooth 3.0 allowing you to make and receive phone calls wirelessly through the receiver; as well as stream music wirelessly from your smartphone to the head unit. In order to use Bluetooth wireless technology, your phone must also be Bluetooth compatible and be able to interpret certain profiles. This unit is compatible with the following Bluetooth Profiles:

    • Hands-Free Communication: HFP 1.6 (Hands Free Profile), PBAB 1.0 (Phone Book Access Profile), GAP (Generic Access Profile).
    • Audio Streaming: A2DP 1.3 (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile), AVRCP 1.5 (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile).
Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Kenwood Excelon DDX9903S. Visit Kenwood's Support Site for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled phones.

Multi-Device Pairing w/ Dual Phone Connection: You can pair up to ten Bluetooth-enabled devices to the Kenwood head unit with a maximum of two Bluetooth phones and one Bluetooth audio player connected at one time, making it easier to switch between devices. When a paired Bluetooth device is in close proximity to the receiver, the auto connection function automatically connects the two units.

    • Secure Simple Pairing (SSP): With Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), you can easily pair a Bluetooth enabled phone to the Kenwood Excelon DDX9903S without having to enter pin codes or go through complicated settings.
    • Auto Pairing (for iPhone): You can even pair your Apple iPhone (iOS 5.0+) by simply connecting it to the Kenwood head unit via USB and following a single prompt on the head unit's display.

Hands-Free Communication w/ External Mic: The head unit supports Bluetooth hands-free communication for your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone. Thanks to the latest Hands-Free Profile (HFP 1.6) with wideband speech capability, the Kenwood Excelon DDX9903S provides more natural sound quality and details during wireless calls. The touchscreen controls of the DDX9903S can be used to dial a number, answer an in-coming call, or end a call. The unit also includes an external microphone (featuring adjustable gain), so you can carry on your side of the conversation while listening to the caller through your vehicles speakers (All or Front only). During a conversation, you can switch between the Private Mode (talking directly on your phone) and the Hands Free Mode.

    • Answering a Call: When a call comes in, a ring-tone will be heard through your vehicle's speaker and the caller's name or phone number will be displayed. You can answer the call from the head unit's touchscreen, or setup the head unit to automatically answer the incoming call immediately (1-30 seconds).
    • Dialing a Number: Using the DDX9903S, you can dial a phone number in one of the following ways:
      • Entering a Phone Number: Allows you to directly dial a phone number from the head unit's touchscreen keypad.
      • Preset Dialing: Allows you to register up to 5 phone numbers for quick dialing. The preset numbers can be accessed from the head unit's touchscreen.
      • Phonebook: You can download phonebook data (up to 1000 entries) from your phone to the DDX9903S. You can then dial by using the downloaded phone book and search it alphabetically.
      • Call History: The Call History is a list of calls that have originated from and were received by this unit that you can dial. You can select Outgoing, Incoming, or Missed calls (up to 50 entries total).
      • Voice Dialing: If your mobile phone supports voice recognition, then you can dial out by voice command. Simply speak into the included microphone.
Note: This unit allows you to answer a call or dial out using any option without engaging the vehicle's parking brake.

Wireless Audio Streaming : The Kenwood Excelon DDX9903S supports wireless audio playback (AD2P) and control (AVRCP) of a Bluetooth-enabled smartphone or audio player, plus song/artist information display and support for AAC lossless music streaming. You are able to stream your stored music library on your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, as well as music apps downloaded on your smartphone to the Kenwood Excelon DDX9903S for playback.

    • SBC & AAC Codecs: In addition to support for the standard SBC Bluetooth audio codec, the DDX9903S offers support of AAC codecs for higher quality audio streaming from select Apple devices. By supporting AAC, the DDX9903S offers better audio performance of the music streamed from your Apple iPod, iPhone, or iPad.
    • Advanced Music Playback: In addition to basic playback functions (Play/Pause, FF/RW, Skip, Random/Repeat), the DDX9903S lets you browse your stored music by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, etc. (AVRCP 1.5+ phones only).
    • Song/Artist Information: The head unit will also display your stored music and music app's song information; such as Artist name and Song/Album title (not compatible with all apps).
Note: When an incoming call or outgoing call is in progress from your Bluetooth enabled mobile phone, audio streaming will be paused so you can take your call. Once the call is finished, your streaming music will resume.

Siri Eyes Free Control: When paired and connected to an iPhone with Siri via Bluetooth (not USB), the Kenwood Excelon DDX9903S has the ability to access Siri through its front-panel controls and external microphone. Simply press-and-hold down on the head unit's "VOICE" button to engage Siri and use the included microphone to communicate with Siri. Siri's voice will heard through your vehicle's speakers. All Siri functions including hands-free calling, music search, setting reminders, text-messaging, audible navigation, and more can be done through the DDX9903S and its microphone. You can even ask Siri to get directions to a destination and the turn-by-turn instructions will heard through your vehicle's speakers, while the on-screen map still displays on your iPhone with Siri. The head unit's audio is attenuated while Siri provides audible directions.

Note: The head unit's LCD touchscreen will only display hands-free calling and Bluetooth audio information (all other functions of Siri are only audible through the Kenwood Excelon DDX9903S; visual data will still need to be viewed from your iPhone device).
    iPhone Integration w/ CarPlay

Apple CarPlay Compatible: Apple CarPlay is the smarter, safer in-vehicle interface to operate your iPhone (iOS 7.1+) with Lightning-connector. Your iPhone must be connected to the Kenwood receiver via the Lightning-cable that came with your Apple device or Kenwood's Lightning connector-to-USB cable (113KCIP103 sold separately). CarPlay features Siri voice control and is specially designed for driving scenarios. It also works with the Kenwood receiver's touchscreen controls. Use CarPlay to get directions, make phone calls, listen to voice mail, send/ receive messages and select music in a way that keeps you focused on the road ahead.

    • Maps: The power and simplicity of Apple Maps comes to your dashboard; complete with turn-by-turn direction, traffic conditions, and estimated travel time. You can enter a new destination or choose a favorite or recent destination using the head unit's touchscreen or by simply asking Siri. CarPlay can also predict where you most likely want to go using addresses from your email, text messages, contacts, and calendars.
    • Phone & Messages: You'll be able to make calls, return missed calls, and listen to voicemails through the Kenwood receiver. Siri can also help you do all these things. In addition, Siri can send, read, and reply to your text messages for you; so you never have to look at your iPhone while driving.
    • Music Library: Access your artists, song, playlists, and iTunes Radio on your iPhone using the Kenwood receiver's touchscreen. Or, just tell Siri what you'd like to listen to. The head unit's touchscreen will display song/artist information, as well as album art in the background.
    • Apps: CarPlay also supports additional audio apps that you've downloaded to your iPhone for enjoying music, radio, sports, news, podcasts, & audiobooks. Control them from the head unit's touchscreen just like you would from your iPhone. Current supported apps include (fees may apply):

Note: If you need an additional USB extension cable, use Kenwood's CA-U1EX USB extension cable (113CAU1EX, sold separately). Any other USB extension cable can cause CarPlay to malfunction.

iPod AV Playback: The Kenwood DDX9903S supports direct connection of your LightningiPod/iPhone or 30-pin iPhone 4S through its rear-panel USB port or HDMI input. The DDX9903S offers audio & video playback of connected Apple iPod/iPhone models.

    • Lightning Connector: If you have a newer iPod/iPhone with the Lightning-connector, you can use Kenwood's Lightning connector-to-USB cable (113KCIP103 sold separately) or the Lightning-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect your iPod/iPhone to the Kenwood Excelon DDX9903S for audio playback only. You'll be able to listen to stored music and music apps on your Lightning-connector Apple device through the Kenwood DVD receiver. To watch stored video and video apps (like Netflix) in addition to music from your Lightning-connector Apple device on the Kenwood Excelon DDX9903S, you'll need Apple's Lightning-to-Digital AV adapter, Kenwood's Lightning-to-USB cable (or Lightning-to-USB cable that came with your device), and Kenwood's KCA-HD100 (or other HDMI cable); all sold separately - this type of connection also requires Bluetooth pairing.
    • 30-Pin Dock Connector: If you have an older iPhone 4S with a 30-pin connector, you can use the dock connector-to-USB cable that comes with your Apple device to connect your iPhone to the DDX9903S for audio playback only. To watch stored video and video apps (like Netflix) in addition to music from your iPhone on the Kenwood DDX9903S, you'll need Apple's 30-pin AV adapter, the 30-pin to USB cable that came with your device), and Kenwood's KCA-HD100 (or other HDMI cable); all sold separately.
Note: You will need to select which type of connection method you are using in the head unit's setup menu.

iPod/iPhone Control: In addition to audio/video playback, the Kenwood DDX9903S supports control, song/artist information display, and battery charging of your compatible Apple device.

    • Head Unit Control: The Kenwood head unit allows you to navigation your iPod/iPhone's music library from its front-panel & touchscreen controls. The head unit offers unique search features like Category Search & Link Search, plus offers basic playback functions like Play/Pause, Fast Forward/Rewind, Previous/Next Track and Repeat/Random of your connected iPod/iPhone. You'll also still be able to control most connected Apple devices from its own touchscreen while connected via USB.
      • Category Search: Cateogry Search allows you to navigate your iPod/iPhone's music library by Playlist, Artists, Album, Song, Genre, Song, Podcast, Audiobook, or Radio. You can then search each of these categories using the head unit's touchscreen slider function (categories will be listed in alphabetical order).
      • Link Search: The head unit offers Link Search, which allows you to play songs related to the currently playing song. Link Search lets the head unit create an album list of the currently playing artist, a song list of the currently playing album, a artist list of the currently playing genre, or a album list of currently playing composer.
    • Song/Artist Info & Album Art: The DDX9903S will display your iPod/iPhone's stored music information including Track number, Elapsed playing time, Song/Album title, Artist name, and Album art. The unit will also display song/artist info and album art from select music apps.
    • Battery Charging: The head unit's USB connection provides 1.5A of current to power and charge your connected iPod/iPhone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position. If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it.

iPhone Mirroring via HDMI: The Kenwood receiver will mirror the display of your HDMI/USB/Bluetooth connected iPhone (iOS 9.0+) device. You'll be able to listen to audio from stored music and music apps, watch video from stored movies and movie apps, and view navigation apps on your iPhone iOS device through the Kenwood receiver. Connection method is based on your type of iPhone. If you have a newer iPhone with the Lightning connector, you will need Apple's Lightning Digital AV adapter and Kenwood's Lightning-to-USB cable (or Lightning-to-USB cable that came with your device); if you have an older 30-pin iPhone 4S, you'll need Apple's 30-pin AV adapter, the 30-pin-to-USB cable that came with your device. In addition, for both types of iPhones, you will need a a mobile-grade HDMI cable; such as the Kenwood KCA-HD100 (all sold separately). This type of connection also requires Bluetooth pairing. The HDMI connector provides the audio/video playback, while the USB connection charges your iPhone device. The Bluetooth connection allows you to continue to take Bluetooth phone calls.

    • Mirroring of your mobile device does not require that your vehicle's parking brake be engaged.
    • Mirroring of your device will not always appear in full-screen on the Kenwood unit's touchscreen display.
    • You will continue to use your iPhone's touchscreen for control; the head unit's touchscreen does not support control.

    Android Integration w/ Android Auto

Android Auto: The Kenwood DVD receiver supports the Android Auto app for Android smartphones running OS Lollipop (5.0 or newer). Your compatible Android smartphone must be connected to the Kenwood receiver's USB port via the microUSB-to-USB cable that came with your smartphone, plus be paired via Bluetooth. Android Auto extends the Android platform into your car in a way that's purpose-built for driving and automatically brings you useful information and organizes it into simple on-screen "card-style" pop-ups that appear just when they're needed. It's designed to minimize distraction so you can stay focused on the road ahead. Features of Android Auto include:

    • Google Speech Technology: The Kenwood DVD receiver enhances your Android Auto experience even more by incorporating Google's Speech Technology using the head unit's external microphone and your car speakers for voice command and text-to-speech, which makes using Android Auto and all of its integrated applications fast, easy, and safe. You will need to press the on-screen "mic" icon to activate Google Speech.
    • Maps: Use Google Maps to get where you're going with on-screen maps, voice-guided navigation, live traffic information, lane guidance, and more. • Phone & SMS: With Android Auto you get access to your contacts and messages through the Kenwood receiver while keeping your eyes on the road. Use the unit's external mic and Google Speech Technology to make a phone call, or have your text-messages read aloud to you while you concentrate on the road ahead; you can even reply to texts via voice command.
    • Music: Access your Android smartphone's music library through the Kenwood receiver via Google Play Music. You'll be able to browse music like you do on your smartphone with song/artist information display and album art. Use the receiver's touchscreen to select songs or just say what song you want to listen to through the head unit's external mic and Google Speech Technology. Android Mirroring via HDMI/MHL: The Kenwood receiver will mirror the display of your HDMI/MHL-connected & Bluetooth-paired Android (OS 4.1+) device. You'll be able to listen to audio from stored music and music apps, watch video from stored movies and movie apps, and view navigation apps on your Android smartphone through the Kenwood receiver. The head unit's HDMI port is MHL (v2) compatible; this means you can simply connect select MHL-compatible Android smartphones to the receiver via a MHL-to-HDMI cable; such as Kenwood's KCA-MH100 cable (sold separately). This type of connection also requires Bluetooth pairing. The HDMI connector provides audio/video playback and charging of your Android smartphone's battery, while the Bluetooth connection allows you to continue to make hands-free calls.

    • Mirroring of your mobile device does not require that your vehicle's parking brake be engaged.
    • Mirroring of your device will not always appear in full-screen on the Kenwood unit's touchscreen display.
    • You will continue to use your Android device's touchscreen for control; the head unit's touchscreen does not support control.

    • Preset EQ: The integrated equalizer offers 8 preset sound modes (Flat, Pops, Easy, Top40, Jazz, Powerful, Rock, or User 1-4) suitable for the music genre of your choice.
    • 13-Band EQ: The User modes (1-4) allows you to manually adjust the head unit's 13-band EQ (62.5Hz, 100Hz, 160Hz, 250Hz, 400Hz, 630Hz, 1kHz, 1.6kHz, 2.5kHz, 4kHz, 6.3kHz, 10kHz, & 16kHz). Each frequency's gain level can be adjusted from -9dB to +9 dB.
    • Drive EQ: The Drive EQ mode helps you hear your music over road noise. It boosts certain frequencies ranges that becomes hard to hear due to road noise.

Music Enhancement: You can restore the sound lost due to audio compression, as well as enhance the sound by virtually manipulating the soundscape.

    • Sound Realizer: When MP3, WMA, or AAC files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Realizer feature boosts low frequencies which can be lost during compression. Set to Level 1, Level 1, Level 3, or Off.
    • Supreme: When MP3, WMA, or AAC files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Supreme Setting function restores their high frequencies so the sound quality is closer to files encoded at a high bit rate. The processing is optimized for the compression format and the bit rate used. When the Supreme Setting is Off, the unit plays the original sound stored in the audio file.
    • Space Enhancer & Stage EQ: You can set the Space Enhancer to Small, Large, or Off. Each setting value indicates the soundscape level. You can also virtually raise the sound position heard from your speakers; the Stage EQ can be set to High, Middle, Low, or Off.

Volume Level & Bass Management: The DVD receiver offers several volume level adjustments to tailor the audio output of your sources. The DDX9903S also provides bass management to get the most impact out of your system.

    • Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to +6.
    • Dynamic Range: The dynamic range can be adjusted by selecting either Normal, Wide or Dialog. Dialog makes the total sound volume become larger as compared with Wide and Normal, allowing you to listen to the movie's dialogue more clearly. This is effective only on Dolby Digital software.
    • Bass Boost & DC Extension: The DDX9903S features a four-step Bass Boost (Off/1/2/3) to enhance your music's lower frequencies. When "Bass DC Extension is turned on, frequencies lower than 6.25 Hz are set the same gain level as the unit's 7-Band EQ 62.5 Hz gain setting.
    • Loudness: This function enhances low and high frequencies to make the sound clearer lower volumes.

Source Beep: The in-dash receiver provides an audible beep to confirm source selection. This function can be turned On or Off.

    AV + OEM Connectivity

AV Input: The Kenwood Excelon DDX9903S DVD receiver is fitted with a rear-panel minijack (3.5mm) audio/video input to connect external AV sources, such as a game system, Blu-ray player, or TV tuner.

HDMI/MHL Input: In addition to iPhone and Android Mirroring, the head unit's HDMI/MHL input can be used to connect almost any external mobile AV source with an HDMI output; such as a TV tuner, Blu-ray player, or game system. The HDMI input will provide video and audio playback. Your vehicle's parking brake will need to be engaged to view video on the receiver's screen. Playback functions will need to be controlled from your HDMI-connected device.

Note: There is a bracket on the back of the receiver that will need to be removed to access the HDMI input. The bracket can be reattached to the back of the unit once you have plugged in your HDMI cable (sold separately).

AV Output (with Dual Zone): The unit features a composite video jack and 3.5mm audio jack to output AV signals to an optional monitor and headphone system. The unit's AV output can be set to Disc, AV-In (not HDMI), or Off. Volume of the second zone can be controlled by the DVD receiver or your rear entertainment system.

Rear & Front Camera Inputs: The unit features a composite video input for connecting an optional rear view camera, such as the Kenwood CMOS-230 (113CMOS230, sold separately). By connecting a rear view camera, you can use the in-dash receiver's touchscreen LCD to see what's behind you when backing up. There is also a composite video input for connecting a front dash-cam (sold separately), so you can display what's ahead of you on the head unit's touchscreen LCD monitor.

    • Parking Guide Lines: When a rear-view camera is connected and you are viewing a rear view image, parking guide lines appear on-screen making parking easy and safer. There are three color-coded horizontal guidelines and two vertical guidelines.
    • Rear-View Auto Switching: The video from this connection can be set to display when switched to this input, or display the rear view camera video automatically when the vehicle is shifted into Reverse gear. The purple/white wire of the wiring harness must be connected to the vehicle's reverse lamp circuit for automatic video switching. Automatic video switching takes approximately 0.8 seconds.
Note: The rear view camera feature is meant as a back-up aid only; never solely rely on the rear-view camera when backing-up. In addition to using the rear-view camera, always look behind you to make sure everything is clear when backing up your vehicle.

GPS Antenna: The Kenwood head unit comes with a GPS antenna to enhance the performance of CarPlay and Android Auto navigation maps.

OEM Integration: This Kenwood DVD receiver is compatible with the iDatalink Maestro RR (794ADSMRR, sold separately); a web programmable module that will permit the aftermarket Kenwood receiver to work with select Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles that feature the factory SYNC system; as well as select GM vehicles with factory OnStar; select Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep vehicles with U-Connect, select Volkswagens with factory digital amplifier, and select Toyota/Scion vehicles.

    • Retained Features: The iDatalink Maestro RR lets Ford/Lincoln/Mercury, GM, Dodge/Chrysler, and VW owners swap out their factory radio for this aftermarket Kenwood head unit; while retaining the Ford Sync system, GM OnStar system, Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep U-Connect system, steering wheel controls, Bluetooth, USB interface, Satellite Radio, and 911 assist. You also get to keep the hands-free mic that comes with the car (which is specially tuned to that particular vehicle). *Retained features will vary by vehicle.
    • Extra Features: In some installations, the iDatalink Maestro RR lets you configure the head unit to operate interior climate controls and provides extra visual data; such as User Selectable Gauges, Vehicle Info (Tire Pressure/Battery Voltage/Check Engine Codes/Door Ajar Warning), and Visual Park Assist. *Extra features will vary by vehicle.

Note: The iDatalink Maestro RR is web programmable, which means you'll need to flash the iDatalink Maestro RR interface module with the correct firmware from iDatalink's website. In addition to flashing the iDatalink Maestro RR module, you'll also need a vehicle specific harness (sold separately). The Kenwood receiver's OEM Setup menu must also be configured with your compatible vehicle's factory system before initial operation.

You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you.

Our odyssey doesn't have the DVD player in the rear so I can't say for sure. But the unit is very flexible so I would think that it would. You can contact kenwood customer support directly by phone, they can give you a definite answer. I've called them in the past with product questions. they were very helpful.

I was looking at the pic of the rear of the radio trying to find the USB port. What type of USB port is the input? A, B and male or female?

Both USB ports are on 18-24 inch pigtails as is the HDMI input. They are all female, so you can use your standard charger cable etc. If using iPhone I recommend getting the HDMI mirroring adapter. It's a neat gadget that displays whatever is on your phone on the head unit. Great for videos for "not" the driver.

The USB port on the back of the is a proprietary connection from Kenwood. However they supply you with a cable that plugs into that port and supplies you with 2 standard female usb female ports. Look at the last picture of the radio on the crutchfield site that shows the back of the radio with all of the cables attached.

I have no clue. What I can tell you is that there are two ports. Each port has a cable that comes out through the dash. One let's you plug in a usb device and the other acts as a quick charger for your Android or iPhone ( with correct adapter) It also connects your phone to the head unit for use with the Android Auto app.

Works great for me. I have a 2013 Jeep Wrangler and have the mic mounted at the center of the dash against the windshield. Was going to just be temporary, but works good enough to leave it there

I own a 2004 Mazda Miata. I had the mic installed on the steering wheel cowl in front of the speed/tach ... it faces me w/in 24 to 30 inches. I drive with my top down going 80 and can hear and talk .. I do have to turn it up, obviously, but I also have focal speaker system, and JBL sub behind my driver seat. Overall, I am incredibly pleased with the system, and would HIGHLY RECOMMEND it .. I do a LOT of business in my sports car on this thing.

I also had an older Kenwood head unit and this was one the reasons I upgraded. I would say overall the microphone works better. No glass hallway sound and usually very clear (kids shouting from the back seat aside). I would recommend this head unit to anyone. Good luck! -DG

My answer may only be of marginal help. I mounted my mic on the steering column. I rarely make calls in my car and I don't think I have *ever* heard someone in a car who did not sound like they were in a 'glass hallway'. That said, the few times I've used it for calls I did not get any complaints for lack of clarity from the other side. It is definitely better than the native iPhone mic with my phone mounted on the dash at roughly the same distance from the driver's seat as the Kenwood mic. My guess is that the Kenwood mic night perform even better if I mounted it in the typical spot near the visor - but I just don't use it enough to spend the time dismantling my molding to get it there. I do use SIRI on a fairly regular basis, though. This mic does a pretty good job of picking up on my commands, and even commands from my daughter from the back seat. Can't say much for SIRI's accuracy, however ;-p ThIs headunit takes a standard mic input. If the factory mic isn't up to par I imagine you could get a higher quality mic that would plug right in.

Michael the Microphone works great. I have never had a single complaint from anyone. I fitted the unit to my Ram 1500 truck and I located the microphone in the A pillar around the height of the sun visor. I hope that helps.

what is the cost for GPS upgrades. Where are they provided? Thank you.
    thomas p.  Aug 19, 2017

The 9903 isn't a nav receiver. There are no maps included (so no updates necessary or usable). The GPS antenna is for the purpose of helping CarPlay or Android Auto do navigation. The one other useful feature is the 9903's GPS radio keeps the clock set accurately in the 9903.

I dont know of a kenwood specifci lightning cable but I do use OEM/aftermarket apple lightning cables. Best bet over car play is to order the Apple HDMI adapter and use HDMI mirroring. This allows your entire phone to be displayed on the screen rather than what Carplay limits. Great with YouTube and and other video/movie apps you may have. Carplay is extremely limited on what it displays on your screen and I prefer Google Maps over the native maps app found on iphones.

I can speak for Android but not Apple. Waze is not supported, the navigation system uses Google Maps. The unit does an excellent job of handling any audio source with navigation running and while taking calls. Basically, am I able to listen to HD Radio, pull up Android Auto to navigate to a destination, then go back to listening to my HD radio while having Google turn-by-turn directions in the background? C J, I don't have Android, but it works exactly as you describe using Car Play. You can navigate anywhere and the last source keeps playing until you change it. Turn-by-turn, text messaging, alerts, etc... all voice over the top of whatever music source you have playing. You can adjust the volume of the turn-by-turn (or whatever) independant of music source. Hope this helps a little.

    Q
Can passengers view the HDMI source while driving or does it prevent you from viewing (with a warning screen or blocking it somehow)?
    mike  Jul 21, 2016
    1 answer
    A
You cannot view any video content on the Kenwood's built-in screen unless the vehicle is parked: "To prevent the display of video while the vehicle is in motion, the light green wire (attached to rear chassis) must be connected to the vehicle's parking brake detection circuit. You cannot view video unless your vehicle's parking brake is engaged. If you attempt to view video without the parking brake engaged, the unit's LCD touchscreen will simply display a blue screen and "Parking Off". While your vehicle is in motion (parking brake off), you can still view all of the head unit's menu screens/settings, source information, metadata, and album artwork; as well as CarPlay, Android Auto, and Mirroring." You will find this information, and more, by clicking the "Details" tab on the stereo's main webpage and scrolling down below the "Features & Specs" table. I hope that helps! Sorry, no. The Kenwood is SiriusXM capable though so, you can add the compatible hideaway tuner package to control and display the service on the unit's touchscreen: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_220SXV300/item.html I hope that helps! My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=5

Does album art work with USB? Actually, has anyone plugged in a USB to confirm that it does. The manual states that it does. My Pioneer does, but the pictures have to be a certain size and formatted a certain way. I've bought a head unit before that said it did, but after being installed, it did not show any album art.

If you are buying music from Apple or Amazon it should work fine but if you're ripping songs from YouTube or getting music from friends you would need to attach the album artwork to the file.

Yes. Album artwork attached to the file tag information properly will appear in on the Kenwood's display when playing the files from USB. I hope that helps! My Bio: http://www.crutchfield.com/Support/Bio.aspx?bio=5

On your website you state that the Kenwood DDX9903S has a 2 year warranty. After purchasing the unit, I notice in the owner's manual that it is only a 1 year warranty. So does that mean Kenwood covers the first year and Crutchfield is covering the second? Or is the 2 year warranty on your site a typo?

The Kenwood manual covers several different stereo models from their line (DDX9903S, DDX,9703S, DDX6903, DDX6703S) some of which are standard line models with a 1 year warranty, while the others are Excelon series (Including the DDX9903S) which do have the 2 year Kenwood warranty. I'm not sure why they do not provide separate warranty info for each model in the manual but I can assure you Kenwood will cover the DDX9903S for any warranty issues within the first 2 years. (As it's one of the primary difference in the Excelon line): http://www.crutchfield.com/Product/CompareTo.aspx?compareItems=01|113DDX9703&compareItems=01|113DDX9903&g=168550 I hope that helps! Q
Can it play video files from a USB stick?

Yes. The USB port enables playback of a variety of audio, video, and photo files stored on a compatible USB memory device. Compatible video files are: MPEG 1/2/4: 1280x720 H.264/MKV/WMV: 1280x720. You will find this information, and more, by clicking the "Details" tab on the stereo's main webpage and scrolling down below the "Features & Specs" table. I hope that helps. Q
Can I mirror my iPhone on the screen of the DDX9903s through the HDMI (so I can run Google Maps instead of Apple Maps)?

Yes: "iPhone Mirroring via HDMI: The Kenwood receiver will mirror the display of your HDMI/USB/Bluetooth connected iPhone (iOS 9.0+) device. You'll be able to listen to audio from stored music and music apps, watch video from stored movies and movie apps, and view navigation apps on your iPhone iOS device through the Kenwood receiver. Connection method is based on your type of iPhone. If you have a newer iPhone with the Lightning connector, you will need Apple's Lightning Digital AV adapter and Kenwood's Lightning-to-USB cable (or Lightning-to-USB cable that came with your device)" You will find this information, and more, by clicking the "Details" tab on the stereo's main webpage and scrolling down below the "Features & Specs" table.
