You'll have a wealth of information right at your fingertips, whether you're taking a trip to somewhere new or just driving around town.

Great-sounding music
The powerful internal amplifier delivers great sound from all your music sources. Load your MP3, WMA, and AAC files on a CD or DVD, and you'll have a nearly endless supply of fresh driving music. A handy USB slot lets you hook up a thumb drive or a USB-equipped MP3 player.

Add an optional cable, and you'll be able to connect your iPod® or iPhone™ and control it right on the touchscreen. No matter what your source, Kenwood's 24-bit digital-to-analog converter sends a crisp, clear audio signal to your speakers. And you can fine-tune your sound using the 3-band EQ and its six preset tone settings.

Build a system
You'll love the two sets of preamp outputs that let you add amps for fuller, more dynamic sound. If you add a subwoofer, you can switch the rear output to a non-fading mode, so your bass stays consistent as you fade from the front to rear speakers.

Add Kenwood's HD Radio™ tuner, and get into the enhanced digital sound quality and additional programming choices on participating stations. Or add a satellite radio tuner to tap into the huge variety of entertainment, sports, news, and commercial-free music it provides. General Features

2-DIN Chassis: The DNX5140 has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as "Double DIN" or size DD), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. Unlike many in-dash monitors, there is no hideaway box; all the inputs and outputs are included within the unit's chassis. The unit can be ISO-mounted using factory brackets, or Euro-mounted using the supplied mounting sleeve. As always, please check the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector to verify fit with your vehicle.

Touchscreen Display: The Kenwood DNX5140 features a 6.1" wide, 16:9 touchscreen display with a TFT active matrix system. The screen has a resolution of 480 x 234 with 336,960 total pixels (480H x 234V x RGB). This unit has touch screen controls with interactive video graphics, making menu navigation easy. The screen is non-glare and smudge-resistant.

Front-Loading DVD/CD Slot: The unit has a front-loading disc-slot to make loading your disc easier because there is no panel to slide or fold-down.

Selectable Screen Viewing Modes: You can choose from the following screen modes for DVD, Video, iPod, USB and Rear-camera playback.

    • Normal: displays 16:9 widescreen format pictures that fill the entire screen width, and 4:3 (conventional TV) pictures display with black bars on either side
    • Full: expands 4:3 pictures horizontally to fill the entire width of the screen, distorting the picture slightly but retaining full image height
    • Justify: expands 4:3 pictures horizontally only at the edges
    • Zoom: expands 4:3 pictures both horizontally and vertically, filling the screen without distorting the picture but cutting off the top and bottom edges

Display Adjustment: You can adjust the unit's display brightness, contrast, color, tint, and black level to suit your viewing needs.

Front Panel Controls With Changeable Illumination: In addition to the touchscreen controls, the unit includes frequently used buttons and a rotary-dial along the left edge of the screen. You can adjust the headunit's button illumination from the following preset colors - Blue, Purple, Sky Blue, Aqua Blue, Yellow, Green, Amber, Red, Pink, White or Scan (Scans through all preset colors). You can also select three custom user colors that are adjusted between Red, Green, and Blue values from 0-31 each. In addition, you can download still images for use as the unit's background from a connected USB thumbdrive.

Parking Brake Detection: To prevent the displaying of video while the vehicle is in motion, the light green wire in the supplied 22-pin harness must be connected to the vehicle's parking brake detection circuit. While the vehicle is in motion (parking brake off), you can still view all of the other displays and menus.

Security Code: You may program the unit with a 4 digit security code. Once the unit has been programmed with a security code, the code must be entered to use the unit after it has been disconnected from power.

If you select the non-fading preamp output setting for the rear channel to use with subwoofer amplifiers, the unit features a low-pass filter with adjustable subwoofer output level control.

Dolby Digital: The DNX5140 supports playback of Dolby Digital and DTS 2.0 DVD discs and will convert multi-channel Dolby Digital sources to 2-channel.

Note: There is a female toslink digital output terminal located on the rear panel that is non-operation and listed in the manual as "Do not connect".

Dynamic Range: The dynamic range can be adjusted by selecting either Normal, Wide or Dialog. Dialog makes the total sound volume become larger as compared with Wide and Normal, allowing you to listen to the movie's dialogue more clearly. This is effective only on Dolby Digital software.

Loudness: The Loudness feature compensates for low and high tones during low volume. You can turn this feature either on or off. Only the low tone is compensated for when the tuner is selected as a source.

Volume Offset Control: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -15 to 0.

Setup Memory: Audio Setup and AV Interface settings can be memorized and recalled at any time. When the settings are cleared when the unit is disconnected from the battery, they can be restored.

Source Tone Memory: This feature allows you to store System Q-EX and bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (DVD, CD, Aux, USB, FM, AM).

Dual Zone Capability: The unit's dual zone control allows you to independently set the source for the front and rear channels. You can set the front channels to Tuner, Sirius, XM, DVD, Video, USB, iPod, Bluetooth, , Navigation or Standby. You can set the rear channels to DVD, Video, iPod, USB, or Off. You can adjust the volume of the 2nd Zone independently from 0 to 35.

    Remote Control

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The DNX5140 has a steering remote control lead attached to the harness. When used with the optional SWI-JACK interface (127SWIJACK, sold separately), you can retain the use of your steering wheel and/or rear seat radio controls when replacing the factory head unit in select vehicles. The SWI-JACK is compatible with over 95% of the vehicles made from 1986 to the present. Compatible vehicles include many Acura, Audi, BMW, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Ford, GMC, Honda, Hummer, Infiniti, Isuzu, Jaguar, Jeep, Kia, Land Rover, Lexus, Lincoln, Mazda, Mercury, Mini, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Oldsmobile, Plymouth, Pontiac, Saab, Saturn, Suzuki, Toyota, and Volkswagen vehicles and Harley Davidson motorcycles. Please consult the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector to see if your vehicle is compatible.

    Great Value

Written By LanceS, Chattanooga on Wednesday, October 13, 2010

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This HU is a tremendous value at this price. I installed it with the harness
that Crutchfield supplied. It went into a 2010 Frontier SE KC. The only part
that I used from the dash kit was a small trim ring. Nice upgrade over the stock
    unit.

    Nice receiver

Written By kskipp, Richmond, VA on Wednesday, October 21, 2009

Very nice unit overall. Got mine refurbished for a great price!! Sounds great and fits in an 04 Trailblazer with no problems. Fairly easy install. User interface is nice and not complicated at all.

Have noticed one very minor glitch with the Onstar interface (GMS04) and receiver, but nothing to fret over. Warning chimes stayed on when I got out of truck for no reason. Put key back in and out and alarm went away. Not sure what happened but it has only happened once.

USB interface won't play mp3s from Rhapsody subscription service - can only use through aux input, but of course, no info shows on screen. Other mp3s play fine through USB. Limitation of Rhapsody service, not receiver. Navigation is awesome! Fast at finding POIs and recalculating routes. Probably going to add bluetooth adapter in the near future. Thanks Crutchfield!!

A Great Overall In Dash Nav/ Mulimedia Reciever

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After reading a lot of reviews and doing a lot of research, I landed on the
Kenwood DNX5140 Navigation Reciever. I replaced my stock radio in my
05 Camry which had a stock JBL Audio reciever, and even with the stock
amp, the 5140's built in amp blew it out of the water. The navigation is
flawless with turn by turn directions and spoken street adresses. A few
people complained about setting the FM channels, but I found this
incredibly easy, you just hold down the button for preset once you are
listening to the station. The DVD player looks great and you can control it
by pressing the funcion command which will bring up on screen controls
such as Play, Skip, Fast Forward, etc. The radio sounds great and the RDS
works great aswell. CD's and MP3's sound amazing and the eq settings
really allow you to tweak the sound. If you are looking for an indash
navigation reciever this is the right one for the price, I chose this navigation
on the fact that it is made by Garmin, which is one of the biggest navigation
companies around, so I knew I wouldn't have any problems with the nav.
Overall a great system and would recommend to anyone, if you are looking
at a cheaper one, save your money and buy this one instead, well worth
    the price!

    Kenwood DNX5140

The navigation works great, however it is more complicated than it needs to be when you try to navigate through the menu. The FM radio function sounds great however the AM portion is horrible with awful interference. As far as setting your memory presets, that to seems like an impossible feet. When playing a DVD, the touch screen is impossible to work. You tap tap tap around the whole screen hoping to finally get what your looking for and that never happens. It is not user friendly AT ALL. You are forced to have to buy the remote. The menu system is completely over engineered and difficult to maneuver.

The Garmin base software and designed GPS works terrific, ease of use with minimal amount of button pushing...obviously Garmin has done its homework on design interface. The Kenwood part...the radio is terrible.
There are so many multi steps to do a simple thing such as programing station presets, it should be a simple process...but no..they add in everything you could imagine of which you will never use..complicating the whole process. I've refrained from writting this for 2 weeks to see if it would get easier to understand, I'm a commercial pilot and used to running complicated navigation , comm. ect.. units, but this thing is way way over engineered. Such as the clock display..it is so small its hard to read, yet the space availible to have a permanent large bold display is there. On top of that when u get a call on your cell phone (handsfree mode) the clock disappears totally, a pain when you want to co-ordinate a meeting time.
To scan or search for a station you have to toggle to several menus to do a simple thing. Kenwood needs to focus on what is functional and not on incorporating everything the design team can think of including into the unit. Would be nice if they had a website where you could custom download the layout and features you want for your unit!!
Overall its a good unit but you will shake your head in disbelief at the arcane layout.

    Great unit, wife loves it

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The cd changer head unit in my 2005 Sequoia went up and I searched for a Nav/DVD unit replacement. I picked this unit over the 6140 because I didn't need the Blue Tooth capability. I've have never been happier! The system install was flawless, I have the IPod interface, steering wheel controller (still working out the kinks with that) and the amp interface. It all works great! I'm only using 50% of what it can do and I can't wait to learn the rest. Just have to find time to read the 100 page instrution manual. BUY BUY BUY!!! Crutchfield was great as always. Fast shipment!
