Our take on the Kenwood DNX7120

Kenwood's DNX7120 navigation receiver puts entertainment options and trusted guidance right in your vehicle's double-sized dash opening. Garmin, a trusted name in GPS, provides the navigation setup, offering turn-by-turn voice directions and on-screen map guidance. You'll find built-in maps of the entire U.S. and Canada, plus plenty of convenient points of interest, and text-to-speech voice prompts that say actual street names. Add an optional XM Satellite Radio tuner and NavTraffic™ service for weather info and regularly updated traffic reports on accidents and road closings in select cities.

Large 6.95" touchscreen
The DVD player and 6.95" touchscreen turn your dash into a drive-in theater when you're parked. And don't forget about the tunes on your store-bought or burned discs — this system sounds as great as it looks. An audio/video input makes it easy to add a camcorder, gaming console, or other video source.

iPod® and Bluetooth® capability
For direct iPod control, just add the KCA-iP300V cable. You can listen to your iPod's music, and view videos and pictures on your screen (when parked). You can also use the USB input to add music with thumb drives or other USB devices. Kenwood's add-on Bluetooth adapter lets you make and receive calls from your compatible phone through your stereo system.

Movies in the backseat
Connect an optional rear-seat monitor, and you'll be able to send movies to backseat passengers while you enjoy music up front. The DNX7120 is even steering-wheel remote ready, so you can add an adapter to operate the stereo with the factory controls on your steering wheel.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

The unit can be ISO-mounted using factory brackets, or Euro-mounted using the supplied mounting sleeve. As always, please check the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector to verify fit with your vehicle.

Motorized Touchscreen Display: The Kenwood DNX7120 features a motorized 6.95" wide, 16:9 touchscreen display with a TFT active matrix system. The screen has a resolution of 480 x 234 with 336,960 total pixels (480H x 234V x RGB). This unit has touch screen controls with interactive video graphics, making menu navigation easy. The monitor electronically slides down for loading or ejecting a disc. It also has a 7-step adjustable viewing angle, including a reversible-tilt angle. This unit has touch screen controls with interactive video graphics, making menu navigation easy. The screen is non-glare and smudge-resistant.

Selectable Screen Viewing Modes: You can choose from the following screen modes for DVD, Video, iPod, USB and Rear-camera playback.

  • Normal:displays 16:9 widescreen format pictures that fill the entire screen width, and 4:3 (conventional TV) pictures display with black bars on either side
  • Full:expands 4:3 pictures horizontally to fill the entire width of the screen, distorting the picture slightly but retaining full image height
  • Just: expands 4:3 pictures horizontally only at the edges
  • Zoom: expands 4:3 pictures both horizontally and vertically, filling the screen without distorting the picture but cutting off the top and bottom edges

Display Adjustment: You can adjust the unit's display brightness, contrast, and black level to suit your viewing needs.

Custom Backgrounds:  You can download still images for use as the unit's background from a connected USB thumbdrive.

Front Panel Controls: In addition to the unit's touch-screen controls, the DNX7120 features often used hard-keyed controls along the bottom of the LCD screen's frame for added convenience.

You can follow calculated on-screen routes to your destination using the headunit's built-in navigation software. As you travel, the DNX7120's navigation system guides you to your destination with voice prompts, arrows, and directions along the top of the map. If you happen to depart from your original route, the internal navigation system recalculates the route and provides new route instructions. Your route is marked with a highlighted line and an arrow, while your destination is marked with a checkered flag.

SiRF Star III: The SiRF Star III GPS chipset is so sensitive that it's forgiving of less than optimal antenna placement, giving you additional placement options.

GPS Antenna: The DNX7120 comes supplied with a GPS antenna that features a magnetic base and an attached 16.5' cable terminated by a proprietary plug which connects to GPS-ANT input on the back of the headunit. The unit also comes supplied with a self-adhesive magnetic base if you are having trouble finding a flat metal surface to mount the antenna.

Text-To-Speech Voice Prompts: The unit's text-to-speech voices "read and speak" the same words that are displayed on the unit's screens. When a traffic message is received, you can see the event on the map and change your route to avoid the traffic incident. TMC data is available in a fast-growing number of cities throughout North America  and gives prompt, accurate notification of accidents, road construction, police, or emergency action, etc. - so you can visually monitor traffic flow and, if necessary, avoid traffic tie-ups. The on-screen map page of the DNX7120 displays a "diamond icon" when there is a traffic event of medium severity or high severity on your current route or on the road you are driving. If you press this icon, the DNX7120 will create a detour route  for you (if applicable) so you can avoid the traffic event. The optional FM Traffic Receiver plugs into the unit's rear panel mini-USB input.

Subscriptions to XM Satellite Radio,  XM NavTraffic, and NavWeather are required. NavWeather provides you with your locations current weather conditions, weather bulletins, road conditions, sky conditions and wind advisories. Powered by NAVTEQ Traffic, XM is the nation's first satellite-based data traffic information service that enables a vehicle's on-board GPS navigation system to display current traffic and weather information for select metropolitan areas, including the driver's chosen route. XM NavTraffic can display the following information:

  • Real-time traffic flow information (including the actual traffic speed data in some cases)
  • Unscheduled traffic incident data (such as accidents, disabled vehicles, and weather-related issues)
  • Scheduled traffic incident data (such as road construction and road closures)

Note: Because the reporting of information on traffic accidents, disabled vehicles, etc. relies on human interaction, the time span from when an incident occurs and when is displayed by XM NavTraffic will vary.

Safe Mode: Safe Mode disables all navigation system functions when the vehicle's parking break is disengaged, that require significant operator attention and could become a distraction while driving.

Multi-Language Display: The DNX7120's on-screen navigation menu supports 16 different languages to choose from, including - English, Spanish, French and German.

Software And Map Data Updates: You can purchase updated map SD-cards and download operational firmware updates from Garmin's web site. Check http://www.garmin.com/Kenwood to see if a firmware update or an SD-card with a newer map version is available. Updated firmware data will need to be downloaded onto a blank SD-card from your PC and then inserted into the Kenwood navigation unit to be downloaded. SD-cards with newer map versions can simply be purchased from Garmin's website and then loaded into the DNX7120 for download.

When your cell-phone is called, the DNX7120 is paused and muted automatically. You are able to register up to five compatible Bluetooth cell phones but only one compatible Bluetooth cell phone can be connected when using the KCA-BT200 adapter. Visit http://www.kenwood.com/bt/information/ for a complete list of compatible Bluetooth enabled phones.

Bass Management System (B.M.S.): This unit is equipped with an interface (pink/black wire in the wiring harness) which controls certain special features of B.M.S.-equipped Kenwood eXcelon amplifiers. This unit, when properly connected, can remotely activate and adjust the amount of bass boost in the amplifier. You can choose between +6dB, +12dB, or +18dB bass boost, or flat (no boost). In addition, you can lower the bass boost center frequency by 20%, switching between "Normal" and "Low".

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The DNX7120 has a "steering remote control" lead attached to the harness. When used with the optional SWI-JACK interface (item #127SWIJACK), you can retain the use of your steering wheel and/or rear seat radio controls when replacing the factory head unit in select vehicles. The SWI-JACK is compatible with over 95% of the vehicles made from 1986 to the present. Compatible vehicles include many Acura, Audi, BMW, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Ford, GMC, Honda, Hummer, Infiniti, Isuzu, Jaguar, Jeep, Kia, Land Rover, Lexus, Lincoln, Mazda, Mercury, Mini, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Oldsmobile, Plymouth, Pontiac, Saab, Saturn, Suzuki, Toyota, and Volkswagen vehicles and Harley Davidson motorcycles. Please consult "What Fits My Car" to see if your vehicle is compatible.

Audio/Video Inputs and Outputs

Preamp Output Harness: The Kenwood DNX7120 comes supplied with a preamp-output harness which connects to the back of the chassis of the unit. The preamp-output harness features three sets of preamp outputs - Front, Rear and Subwoofer.

Audio/Video Harness: The headunit comes with an Audio/Video harness which plugs into the back of the DNX7120. The A/V harness consists of the following connections.

  • RCA A/V Input: The harness features an audio/video input with a set of stereo RCA jacks and a composite video jack. AV-IN1 can be named "VIDEO", "DVD", "VCD", "VCR", "GAME", TV or "AUX".
  • A/V Output: The harness also features a set of stereo RCA jacks and a composite video jack to output A/V signals to an optional monitor. You can choose DVD, iPod, USB or AV-IN as the source for the A/V output.
  • Rear View Camera Input: In addition, The harness has an additional video jack for connecting an optional rear view camera, such as the Kenwood CCD-2000 (item # 113CCD2000). The video from this input can be set to display when switched to with the Video Select button, or display the rear view camera video automatically when the vehicle is shifted into Reverse gear. You can also display the video of the rear view camera in a mirror image, if desired.

Note: The purple/white wire in the wiring harness must be connected to the vehicle's reverse lamp circuit for automatic video switching.

Parking Brake Detection: To prevent the displaying of video while the vehicle is in motion, the light green wire in the supplied 22-pin harness must be connected to the vehicle's parking brake detection circuit, as well as a constant power source and ground. While the vehicle is in motion (parking brake off), you can still view all of the other displays and menus.

3.5mm A/V Input: The DNX7120 features a 3.5mm stereo audio input and 3.5mm video input on the rear chassis of the unit for portable MP3/Video players. These terminals are also compatible with your dock connector iPod using the optional KCA-iP300V, sold separately. The headunit comes supplied with a 43" male to female 3.5mm audio/video cable to connect to this input to make connection easier.

USB: The DNX7120 also features a female type-A USB terminal on a 36" pigtail on the back of the unit for connection of USB devices. This connection is also compatible with your dock connector iPod using the optional KCA-iP300V, sold separately.

KAB Port: This proprietary 13-pin port allows you to connect an optional  Satellite Radio tuner or Bluetooth module to the DNX7120.

GPS Antenna: Proprietary port for connecting supplied GPS antenna.

TV Tuner Input: The DNX7120 includes a 20-pin input for the optional Kenwood  KTC-V300N TV tuner.

Relay Port: Using the supplied Relay harness the DNX7120 can control the external power of a connected 12-volt device (requires a commercially available relay unit).

SD-Card Slot: An SD-card slot is located behind the unit's slide-down front-panel which allows you to update mapping software via mapping SD-cards purchased from Garmin.

Nice unit with Garmin Nav

Written By Tim, Covington, GA on Monday, September 28, 2009

Unit works great with my Mustang with the Shaker 1000 system using the 127C2RFRD1 recommended by Crutchfield. The Kenwood gives you alot of control with adjustable low and high pass filters and pretty good EQ control. The Ipod control works flawlessly. The unit is a little slow to boot up, but not a problem. The Kenwood manuals are not very well written and do not fully explain all of the sound adjustments and what exactly they do. Once the Crutchfield tech helped me, I got the unit sounding really good with the stock Shaker 1000 amps, speakers, and sub-woofers.

The manuals do not describe how to access the SD card reader slot.

I downloaded the software update from Garmin It is a bit confusing as after you stick the SD card in the unit nothing happens. I checked the software version and it was the latest revision. I am not sure if it updated or the unit was already at the most recent software revision. The same thing with the Garmin map update. I purchased the SD update card from Garmin, stuck it in the SD slot, and nothing apparent happened. However, the map version is now at the current level. So apparently it read the update card? I wish the update process was a bit more interactive so you know something is happening.

Overall, I would recommend this unit, especially at the price offered in Crutchfield outlet. This is a real bargain!

DNX7120- Its cheaper than buying an new car!

Written By Scott, Rapid City, South Dakota on Sunday, January 18, 2009

Installation was easy. This is a great package as it provides all the features of the newest cars and is very easy to use. The Crutchfield sheets made installation a snap. I later added the blue tooth wireless setup for use with my mobile phone and that works great also. The tuner works great as I had no idea there were so many radio stations in my area to choose from. I really like the feature which allows me to enter my own text name for the stations. The DVD player works great. The GPS is the same as the better Garmin models and you can easily upgrade maps in future years. I use my Inno XM radio receiver on the Ipod input (no extra cables required)- the input level on the Ipod (audio line level) input is a bit lower than the other sources but you can compensate for this in the audio setup by lowering all the other signal source inputs. The backup camera feature works great. I am not an ipod user but have an extensive library of music on my laptop - so I added a 16gb USB drive gives me hundreds of hours of music to choose from. Its a great setup! I liked the DX7120 so much that I also bought a DX8120 for my 3000GT (blue tooth built in for my cell phone and this setup has better equlization controls for tweaking the sound to be just perfect... Awesome system!

Kenwood DNX7120

Written By Jeffery, Charlotte, NC on Wednesday, November 05, 2008

This unit is great! I put this into a 2007 Monte Carlo; I had to add the modules listed to keep Onstar and Steering wheel controls working in the Vehicle. After a few hours of install time and one technical glitch that JT at Crutchfield Tech support solved in about 5 minutes the job was done. This unit looks like it was factory installed; the install kit that comes free had all the hardware needed for a clean easy install process.
As far as the functionality goes everything works great, tuner, DVD, Nav system, back up camera all function as they should and are easy to navigate to.
The only issue I have with the unit are the very small function keys along the bottom of the display they are just a little too small for me.
With all the stuff I was putting in with this I was a little nervous about how things would turn out but with everything being included thanks to the notes on the Crutchfield site it was fairly easy.
I would recomend this unit and ordering it from Crutchfield, so you know what you need and get support if needed.

Easy install, simple to use.

Written By Kris J, Red Wing, MN on Wednesday, June 18, 2008

I recently purchased and installed this unit in my 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser, and must say that I am quite pleased. I have absolutely zero experience in removing and installing anything other than a fuse. Armed with nothing more than Crutchfield's master sheet, a phillips screwdriver, a 10mm socket, and a soldering gun I set out for the great unknown. Eureka, it works! In little more than half a day (with a few calls placed to tech support) I had the unit ready to power up and run. The instructions from both Kenwood and Crutchfield are straight forward and easy to follow. Also installed was a SWI-JACK in order to retain use of my steering wheels controls. The universal SWI-JACK appears a bit on the cheap side for the money, and the programming of this switch is like trying to calculate a moon landing with an abacus. It does work, although FJ owners be warned that even though you can still use the controls, they do not function like the factory set-up. The 7120 improved the sound and control of my factory audio system, and using the Kenwood GUI interface is simple. Pretty intuitive design considering the knocks it's sister the Kenwood DNX 7100. The only thing that really bugs me about the design of the unit are the sand grain sized buttons which control some of the functions. Hey Kenwood, why not touch screen buttons all around instead of these rice grains on the bottom? Less flimsy mounting brackets and trim bezel would be a plus. Other than that I am a happy camper.

Good unit, read the manual and research

Written By cosworth, New Westminster, BC on Friday, June 13, 2008

A GREAT deal. First issue? I want to install a delay relay or capacitor system so that when I start the car from accessory that the unit doesn't have to reboot. All stereos do this.

Interface? Flame animations and tetris-like flipping blocks make this look 1996 era. If Apple made a nav system it would look pretty but tick you off all the time. Set it up right and be happy. I REALLY like the custom background. Sadly, the custom background only loads after the tacky blue logo and progress bar go away upon reboot.

CD/USB MP3? Get the folders right. Maybe make your folders non-Artist. Mine are split from A-L, M-T, T-Z etc. With a max of 244 files in each. If you go by artist and have a lot of albums then you quickly go over the 255 limit. Group your files this way if you like entire catalogue random. It is a bit fussy and backwards to just pressing "RNDM" and expecting ALL songs to rotate. Just read the manual and set it up. Every usb key and card CF/SD card I have works.

Garmin rocks, but the lack of a British voice is terrible. Saying "Brother instead of "Bridge" is sorta dumb. A voice update is needed. It sounds a bit electronic. If my wife likes it and makes her comfortable driving it rules.

DVD? It plays them what more do you want? Feels like I'm at the drive in.

Tuner? As advertised and works great.

I like it, I got it to do what I wanted and more importantly it doesn't get frustrating trying to get it configured.
