Our take on the Kenwood DPX300U

Kenwood

Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Everyone gets something they like

Perfect for a family vehicle, Kenwood's great-looking DPX300U CD receiver gives you variable illumination colors, plenty of entertainment options, and user-friendly controls. And you can plug your iPod®, iPhone®, or other devices into the handy USB port and auxilliary input located on the front panel. System info shows up in extremely large font size on the display, so you'll know what's up with a glance.

How do you like your music?

Whether you plug in your iPod® or iPhone® to the front USB, load a CD, or listen to Internet radio stations, you can choose from a variety of easily accessible musical options. iPhone users, you can access and control your iHeartRadio and Pandora stations with the Kenwood's controls. You can also add a SiriusXM tuner to access the impressive selection of sports, talk, news, and commercial-free music offered on satellite radio. And the included wireless means your passengers can control the entertainment while you worry about the driving.

Variable color options

The DPX300U will give your dash a face lift, with sleek styling, a glossy exterior, and a prominent control knob that give it way more style than your average factory stereo. When you set the variable display and button colors to match your car's interior, you'll give it extra oomph. Amd here's good news for you Toyota owners out there — this receiver comes with Toyota trim pieces that make it look right at home in your ride.

Sound quality to rock your ride

This Kenwood's built-in MOSFET amp will impress you with its clean power, so turn it up if you want. You can use the 3-band equalizer for precise adjustment of the highs, mids, and lows, while eight EQ presets allow quick shifts to a tone curve that matches your music. The Speaker Settings function tailors the output of the receiver to match the size and type of speakers you've got installed in your vehicle.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Kenwood stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Kenwood, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

iPod note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

iPod Direct Connection w/ DAC Bypass: The DPX300U's front-panel USB port acts as an iPod/iPhone high-speed direct connection when used with the optional Kenwood USB Direct Connection Cable (113KCIP102, sold separately) or the USB/iPod cable that comes with your iPod/iPhone. If you have an iPod nano (7th gen), iPod touch (5th gen), or iPhone 5/5C/5S; use the Lighting-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect to the head unit. Using either cable allows audio playback, music navigation, information display, and charging of select iPod/iPhone models from the DPX300U.

The Kenwood head unit supports audio playback of music files and podcasts stored on your iPod or iPhone, as well as music apps streamed to your iPhone.

You will continue to use your iPhone's touchscreen to navigate your apps. Not all apps will be compatible with App Mode. Demo Mode: This unit features a Demo mode which can be turned On or Off within the menu.

2-DIN Chassis: The DPX300U has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as "Double-DIN"), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. As always, please consult the Crutchfield Car Selector to verify fit with your vehicle.

    Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: The DPX300U comes with an IR remote control (RC-406) for wireless operation of the head unit. The remote will control Audio, CD, USB, and Tuner functions. It is powered by a single CR2025 3V lithium-cell battery (supplied).

    • Numeric Keypad: The wireless remote control features a numeric keypad (0-9) which allows direct track access of your music tracks & files (from CD or USB), as well as AM/FM presets.
    • Attenuator: The CD receiver features an Attenuator button on the supplied remote control that turns the volume down very quickly with one touch of the button.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input wire (blue/yellow) within the included wiring harness that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

I finally got around to replacing the factory unit in my '01 Subaru Legacy. This is my first Double-Din unit, but it's the fourth Kenwood that I've owned, and I am VERY happy with it. Very clean sound, great controls and user interface, and tons of options for customizing the sound, and every other aspect of the unit.
    Pros:
Excellent value. Beautiful design. Simple and elegant, doesn't stick out like a sore thumb; actually looks like it belongs in the car! Front USB Port. MORE AMPLIFICATION than most other aftermarket head units(88 watts RMS). If you don't want to spend the $ on a dedicated amplifier for your speakers, Kenwood is the only way to go; and if you ever do decide to add an amp for a subwoofer, or speakers, or both, all the preamp outputs you'd ever need are there.
    Cons:
    None.

Great double din at a fair price. Installed in a Mercury Milan to replace factory head unit and add Sirius XM. The unit works great with Sirius, IPod and Iphone. The tuner pulls in distant stations with no problems. Sound is great with factory speakers. The only negative is the display washes out in bright sun light. Overall I'm very pleased and would buy it again.
    Pros:
    Great sound and controls

Great sound, cluttered front panel, difficult manual

Written By Mark S., Crossville, TN on Wednesday, April 02, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Unit has great sound, sourcing can be CD, AM/FM, MP3, USB drive. If you are into "Cool", it offers multiple colors to select from for the display, none of which do well in direct sunlight which means in my Convertible I can see the display at night or with the top up. I tend to use a Flash drive as my input with my choice of music so the display is just a little aggravation versus a substantial problem.
    Pros:
Great Sound, Outputs for: Subwoofer, Rear entertainment systems, Amp. All kinds of Source inputs. It has a very modern appearance. I'd say for someone with a major Amp/Subwoofer system this would be a good choice
    Cons:
The front is really cluttered. The On/Off/ Source button is miniscule and located right above the USB port. With the exception of the Volume Knob every control is small to tiny. The display is large, no trouble seeing Artist, Title, etc as they go scrolling across (unless the top is down and the sun is shining) I am probably going to apply a layer of 2" clear tape to the Display area as to is very high gloss and will show the smallest of abrasions from the most careful cleaning.

I installed this stereo into my 2009 Toyota Corolla. The face places included in the box did not cover the entire opening but the face places provided by Crutchfeild did the job. The installation of the stereo unit was very simple; three factory screws on each bracket directly into the unit, no converter installation kit needed. Then factory brackets directly into factory position. Many people of have commented that they stereo does not give the appearance of an after market stereo...Looks like the one that the car rolled off the assembly line with. Using the stock, 6 speakers within the car, I am able to just about rattle the windows, at half volume.
    Pros:
Easy to install Easy to follow directions Super fast shipping

    Kenwood DPX300U Receiver

Written By SoundManWNY, Buffalo New York on Sunday, March 09, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Found this to be a very high quality receiver for the price. It has all the features of the high end models at a much lower out of pocket cost. This one is also user friendly, very easy to set up for display and sound shape.
    Pros:
As long as your not trying to blow out an ear drum! this has just the right amount of output power. The color choice and being able to modify colors on keys as well as the display is a very nice feature. The single touch ATT that in an instant lowers the volume to next to nothing and then allows you to return right back is one great feature. The ease of use is also a very nice feature, the remote is just the right size so you dont have to fumble for the buttons.
    Cons:
Down loading and PDF printing of the actual operators manual was a con but if you have a lazer printer and a three ring binder your all set. The receiver has a Gloss Black finish and matches poorly to most vehicle dash boards that have more of a Matt Finish. It also has a glossy and very smooth face, this is very reflective and likes to colect dust on it. I find myseld carrying a small micro fiber towel now to give the front of the unit a fast wipe every couple of days.

    Nice Deck, Great Price!

Need to upgrade my factory Silverado head unit and wanted a double din to match the factory look. Called Mike at Crutchfield with a couple quick questions about fit and made my decision. Fit is excellent and installation wasn't hard at all. Hardest part was trying to fit the Alpine add-on amp and all the wiring behind the dash!
    Pros:
Very good sound and fairly easy to use once you give the user guide a quick look. Was able to match the factory instrument colors with all the choice on the new deck. Iphone works perfectly and Pandora is easy to control from the deck as well.
    Cons:
A bit hard to see with sunglasses on in very bright light but not terrible.

    Good Sound, Poor Layout

Written By J, Midwest on Sunday, February 09, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased this stereo as a replacement for the JVC KW-XR610 head unit that was previously installed in my 1995 Buick Roadmaster. I liked the JVC. It looked good in the car, delivered excellent sound quality and was easy to use. Unfortunately, the buttons intermittently stopped working before it finally died after only three years of use. I was very disappointed on two levels. First, when I purchase an expensive stereo from a supposedly good brand, I expect it to last. Second, the JVC's failure forced me to disassemble and reassemble the dashboard on an almost-twenty year old car that you cannot get interior parts for anymore. Not wanting to relive the JVC debacle, I decided to go with Kenwood on the advice of a coworker who is knowledgeable about electronics. It was also the most stock-looking double din stereo available for the application. Almost all the other stereos I looked at were grotesque looking. The Good: Installation was reasonably quick and painless, taking less than a couple of hours. The Crutchfield website indicated that this stereo would not fit my in car. However, it fits seamlessly into the dashboard stereo bezel with no need for spacers and actually looks (more or less) like it's supposed to be there. The customizable display is nice because you can set it to match the rest of the dashboard lights exactly. Nothing looks more out of place than a bright blue/red/orange radio surrounded mellow green lights everywhere else. The sound quality is at least as good as the stock GM and the JVC units were (although not noticeably better). It is highly customizable, so you have to tinker with the audio controls a lot to make it sound right. The Pandora compatibility is a nice touch.
    Pros:

    Cons:
The Bad: Both the placement of the controls and the layout of the user interface lack dramatically. The buttons are all too small (with the exception of the six presets) and are not easy to operate while driving. Larger, more pronounced buttons would allow the driver to concentrate more on the road and less on operating the stereo. The seek buttons and volume dial should be positioned on the left side of the unit to accommodate the driver. The USB port should be placed on the right side so the i

    Kenwood DPX300U CD receiver

Written By David, Lafayette, CO on Wednesday, February 05, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I drive a 1997 Honda CR-V and have been using the original OEM receiver for the 14 years I've owned the vehicle. I wanted the ability to listen to my extensive mp3 collection while driving and this was the perfect upgrade! Very reasonably priced and this does just about everything you would want for a CD receiver. This was easy to install on my own- took me about 4 hours from start to finish with one call to Crutchfield tech support, but if you've ever done this sort of thing before it would probably take just a couple of hours. The variable color display is great- with 24 options, I found an exact match to my vehicle's dash color display. The sound is outstanding even with stock speakers, so I can't wait to hear what it sounds like when I upgrade the speakers. The preset EQ options all make noticeable improvements to different styles of music. I bought a Kingston Digital 32 GB micro USB drive, which is just the right size to store the maximum 255 folders/255 files per folder that this receiver can read. I leave it connected all the time and now I have around 500 hours of music constantly at my fingertips. It's kind of slow to advance through that many folders (no iPod-style spinning through the list, you just have to press buttons to go forward or back), but that's a nice problem to have. This receiver has a clock, which I definitely need and most other double-DIN receivers did not have. All in all, an excellent purchase and I am very pleased with this receiver!
    Pros:
Easy to install, USB input, adjustable color display, excellent sound quality.
    Cons:
The display is hard to read in bright daylight (looks great at night, though).

    Great Fit

Written By NilesL, Long Beach CA on Tuesday, January 21, 2014

Bought this head unit to replace the OEM unit in my 2004 Ford Explorer. Couldn't be happier. The look is fantastic and it fits perfectly in the double din factory spot without any kind of trim rings. Had it done professionally here in Long Beach. Great shop, took less than 45 minutes to install head unit and rockford-fosgate 6X8's in all four doors. Keep my factory 8" sub and the sound is truly fantastic. Took a minute to learn all the bells and whistles, but this unit and my setup has me in audio heavin every time I step into my truck. Love the color display at night. You can set it to one color or let it change intermitently. You also have control of all speakers and subwoofer to set to your liking. Great price for a very good head unit.
    Pros:
Great price. Ease of use. Remote control. Love the color display.
    Cons:
No owners manual with purchase. (have to download). Had to download upgraded software to repair a glitch.

    What a nice purchase

Written By SUMBUDDIE, Lucerne, Lake County, California on Thursday, January 02, 2014
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy install, only cost $65 for a professional to do it, plug in the GM adaptor and get it going. I purchased the Kenwood DPX300U over the DPX500BT as I did not want bluetooth, phones, or even Sirus Radio, ONSTAR and GM getting my GPS, starting or stopping my vehicle if they liked, or some hacker hijacking the car/truck while I am in it or not. The Kenwood really pulls in FM stations, and puts down a very clean signal to the speakers. If you are upgrading your Factory system as I was (2008 Avalanche) then put in new speakers as the factory speakers are really poor quality and can not even handle factory sound. The free antenna adaptor is necessary as the factory antenna has three holes to bolt it down and one center hole for the antenna wire, to upgrade the antenna on the fender is an expensive bit of labor. so go to a window antenna if you can. Fender antenna like the ones they put on boats are cheap at $11 but three hours of body work to put them in despite being the equivalent of 40 feet long (the wire is coiled inside the rubber) so they work really good. The GM adaptor integrator so that the steering wheel paddles and buttons work, well they all work better but slightly differently then the factory setup. I am very happy with the radio and how it works in the Avalanche.
    Pros:
It looks great, easy to use with the big buttons on the Kenwood, and color at night is spot on correct to factory dash lights if you want to set it for that. I am very happy with the purchase and the package Crutchfield put together with their Tech Team. Take your time on what you want to purchase, and talk on the phone or use the chat room. Then get all you need in one go especially the free stuff in package sales. Well worth the effort.
    Cons:
Nothing negative to say ... all good.

Good radio, easy to install with Crutchfield tech support. Lots of wires but all easily identified. Sucks having to buy 2 different cable packages to make it work with your car, but Crutchfield help is awesome. They knew the wiring like they were holding it in their hand.
    Pros:
    looks good, fits OK
    Cons:
So amny wires it was tough to pack them all in behind the radio.

Multi colored lights, great sound, amp hookups make it easy to add amps, good EQ.
    Cons:

    Just Right

Written By WillieG61, Canton, OH on Thursday, December 05, 2013

I wanted something to replace my factory radio/CD player, but didn't want more than I needed. This Kenwood unit filled the bill. Perfect fit where my original radio was, double din. Plenty of features without going overboard. It was an easy install, and even with the original speakers sounds far better than the original. Will replace the speakers eventually but for now they'll do. . It's a nice unit, download the user manual and familiarize yourself with it. It's pretty straight forward to operate. .I was even able to adjust the display color to fit the dash display. . Nice..
    Pros:
Ipod, and auxiliary connections, great FM reception, looks good and sounds even better.. Easy to install, just familiarize yourself with the instructions.
    Cons:
    None so far

Excellent replacement for the factory Mach stereo in my older Mountaineer. Lower price than having the OEM one repaired and puts out much better sound. Also able to get rid of the "portable" satellite receiver which was always in the way of the console.
    Pros:
Better sound, remote, price, Satellite radio integration
    Cons:
Unable to use factory six disc CD changer anymore

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great unit! I like the colors and the USB port and aux. looks great in my truck. I like that you can use either the iPod/iPhone to select music or at a buttons touch use the unit to control the pod/phone.
    Pros:
Fun, colorful, easy use of pandora and your music library. Plays great loud! I like a range of classical to metal so I do mean plays all things loud very well
    Cons:
Sometimes the kenwood direct control gets to be a pain in the but. Once you learn to shut it off it's ok so you'll hate that for a few weeks till it's your instinct to switch it around for easier use

Awesome stereo, has a great LED display, its pre amp output is great too. Really a great item for the price. With the stock car speakers its given great sound quality, the only thing that would make it better is buying better subwoofers together with it.
    Pros:
Looks nice Easy to install makes a boring dash or console look great.

    None whatsoever

    Another great Kenwood Product

Written By AFMedic542, Oklahoma on Friday, November 15, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the 4th Kenwood product I've purchased for Car Audio over the years and not a single complaint to be had about the quality, ease of installation (Crutchfield made it easy with their installation tips and package deal). The only point I would like to make is that the 300U is NOT compatible with any of the services they advertise, such as Pandora, UNLESS you have a iPhone. They state it's Android compatible.. yep it has an mini-stereo plug input for your headphone input and it will charge your Android with the USB... but that's it! You have to use both cables and the radio will not pair with your Android Phone. Just a small surprise I got after purchasing and installing. When Kenwood Customer Service was contacted to inquire why it didn't pair with my Android - they suggested I upgrade to the 500U... nice huh? Other than that - no complaints - a great replacement for the OEM GM Stereo that went kaput on me after 8 years.
    Pros:
Easy Install, Good Quality, Outstanding Sound Output
    Cons:
Is NOT Android Compatible. Do not expect to plug your Android in with the USB and have compatibility with Pandora or even the Kenwood Mobile App they ask you to download... it is ONLY compatible with iPhone

    Kenwood DP300U

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Needed a Double DIN CD player to replace my aging 2000 Toyota Avalon stereo who's CD player no longer played most CDs. I didn't want to spend a lot of money but my one must-have was a preamp sub output and this head unit was the one I choose. Love the fact that Crutchfield included the Metra Wiring Harness and Metra In-dash Receiver kit for free. Plus no tax and free shipping! I told myself I wouldn't regret it but now I regret I didn't spend $40 more to get the Kenwood DPX500U that has built-in Bluetooth. Oh well. I'm still very happy.
    Pros:
Large easy to read display and a multitude of display colors. Great sound using only the DPX300U to power my 4 door speakers with a Kenwood Amp powering a Sub in the rear.
    Cons:
No built in Bluetooth. Wish now I spent the extra $40 to get the DPX500U unit which has it. Nowhere in the Kenwood instructions/manual what some of the settings terminology means like - "Throughput" although I finally found it here on Crutchfield's Product Research.

Great radio with excellent sound quality. Not real intuitive to learn; need the instructions for sure; station selection tabs are hard to see and distinguish which is which. Haven't had time to experiment with all the features available. Very satisfied with this purchase.
    Pros:
Great sound quality; like the usb and aux connection that my factory radio did not have; great instructions from Crutchfield with directions and pictures.
    Cons:
manual could be written a bit better. Station selection buttons are not separated enough; find myself touching the wrong one.

I had this professionally installed in my 2006 Mustang, replacing the factory Shaker 500 system. This sounds an performs 100% better than the Shaker. With the Sirius/XM, I am never without my favorite music, Aiko-Aiko! CD player does not insert blank spaces between tracks where none should exist such as during a concert recording, the Shaker was infamous for this malady. The graphics are pretty cool too, information is their at a glance. Great value.
    Pros:
    Ease of use and features.
    Cons:
    It was not free.

    Fabulous Radio, Fabulous Price

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I should be a nun ... I went without a radio for at least three years and finally broke down, shopped at Crutchfield and purchased the Kenwood DPX300U. A friend around the corner from me installed it and he couldn't get over how easy it was with the color pdfs Crutchfield sends along with the diagrams and the connectors. It's so versatile: ipod, Pandora, Radio - I can listen to any of my favorites. It even has a remote. Plus when I finally decided to read the instructions, it took me all of about 5 minutes to learn how to use it.
    Pros:
Lots of great lights (hey, I'm a girl), fantastic sound, easy to use, lots of sound options.
    Cons:
No removable face plate (but in this day, I don't know if that's a con or not).

    Excellent value head unit

Written By Shock Hazard, Fort Wayne, IN on Sunday, September 15, 2013
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This replaced a factory Pioneer head unit made for Ford that had random issues with CDs. I am a long-time Sony and Clarion/Alpine fan, and was considering those brands for the double-DIN application. The Kenwood unit exceeded the competition in nearly every way and was among the lowest cost. Despite the great value, this unit delivers on every expectation. Unit is easy to use, has far greater headroom than the factory head unit, and has a mile long list of features. Multi-color programmable backlit display is clear and crisp. USB interface is thus far flawless. I am now a Kenwood fan as a result. This head unit will not disappoint.
    Pros:
Great sound, ease of use, remote, display, file compatibility, great Crutchfield customer service.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Had this installed this morning in a Tacoma. Installation went fine until the trim plate was to be installed...it kept popping out. Finally had to shim the radio to keep it in place. Finished product looks very good. Controls are hard to use, instructions are very basic and not inclusive. There is an owner's manual available on the Kenwood website, exept I couldn't get it to load either for viewing or for download. Ended up calling the factory for help on a few things. Was told no manual available as yet for mailing.
    Pros:
Great sounds for the $$$. Good looking unit.
    Cons:
