Our take on the Kenwood DPX301

Fill your car's large dash opening with Kenwood's DPX301 CD player and upgrade your sound system at the same time. Designed to replace the 4" tall radio in a variety of Japanese and American vehicles, the DPX301 comes loaded with just about everything you need to anchor a great mobile entertainment system — from satellite radio controls to Kenwood's powerful sound shaping tools.

Sound-wise, this versatile CD player plays back discs you've loaded with MP3 and WMA files — you can enjoy up to 10 hours of music from one disc. The powerful on-board amplifier ensures clean sound from your speakers, with six preset sound curves at your fingertips. A 3-band equalizer gives you extensive control over the bass, midrange, and treble. Use the wireless remote to control the action from anywhere in the car.

If you have a large system in mind, two sets of preamp outputs offer a convenient connection for your external amps and subs. The DPX301 will control a Kenwood changer or satellite radio, and it even features an auxiliary input that makes it easy to bring your portable music player along for the ride.

Features

AAC/MP3/WMA Playback: The receiver can play AAC, MP3 and WMA files recorded on CD-ROM, CD-R, and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, and Romeo formats. Each disc should have a maximum of 8 directory levels, 100 folders, and 255 files per folder. During MP3/WMA playback, the unit displays any recorded ID3 Tag information. AAC ID3 tags cannot be displayed.

Satellite Radio Ready: The head unit is directly compatible with the SIRIUS SIR-KEN1 Satellite Tuner for Kenwood (item # 607SIRKEN1).

Note: In addition to the optional satellite tuner, you will also need the proper antenna and a subscription to SIRIUS Satellite Radio.

System Q Sound Control: Six EQ curves are preset into memory, allowing you to recall the best preset EQ curve for different types of music. Each preset has its own level settings for bass (100Hz), midrange (1kHz), and treble (10kHz). Each level can also be set to your personal taste between -8 and +8 and stored in the "User" memory. The 6 preset curves with their respective bass, mid, and treble levels are as follows:

  • Rock: Bass +6, Mid +1, Treble +2
  • Pops: Bass +3, Mid +2, Treble +6
  • Easy: Bass +6, Mid 0, Treble -2
  • Top 40: Bass +3, Mid +1, Treble +8
  • Jazz: Bass +5, Mid +2, Treble +2
  • Natural: Bass 0, Mid 0, Treble 0

Speaker Settings: The Speaker Setting function tailors the System Q Sound Control settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Speaker Setting of "SP Off" (flat), "SP OEM" (for OEM factory speaker systems), "SP 6x9/6" (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers), or "SP 5/4" (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).

System E's+: In addition to System Q Sound Control, the DPX301 features the System E's+ crossover system for the speaker and preamp outputs. You can make the following adjustments:

  • Front High Pass Filter: 40Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, 150Hz, 180Hz, 220Hz or Thru (no filter)
  • Rear High Pass Filter: 40Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, 150Hz, 180Hz, 220Hz or Thru (no filter)
  • Low Pass Filter: 50Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz or Thru (no filter)

Supreme Setting: This setting improves the sound quality of low bit-rate MP3/WMA files by digitally enhancing the high frequencies.

Source Tone Memory: This feature allows you to store System Q bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (CD, FM, AM, Satellite, and CD changer).

Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0.

Built-in Amp Switch: If the audio signals are output to external amplifiers, you can turn off the internal amplifier to improve audio quality.

CR-2 Advanced Tuner: This unit uses Kenwood's CR-2 Advanced tuner for clear radio reception. You can choose one of three tuning modes: Auto 1 (seek tuning), Auto 2 (cycles through and tunes the selected band's preset stations only with each button press), or Manual.

HD Radio Ready: With an optional Kenwood HD Radio tuner (item # 113HR100TR), you will be able to receive digital AM/FM broadcasts from local stations where available. This new technology will significantly improve audio quality and reception, as well as include information such as artist name and song titles or traffic news, viewable on the receiver's display.

Clean Reception System Circuit (CRSC): This circuit controls multi-path distortion by reducing stereo separation. As stereo separation is reduced, multi-path has less effect on the radio signal, improving reception in areas with tall buildings and mountains. The CRSC circuit can be turned on or off.

Security Code: You can enter a 4-digit security code which must be used when the unit is removed from the vehicle, or the constant power source is disconnected from the unit. When constant power is restored to the unit, the security code must be entered before the unit becomes operational. The security code may be disabled if desired.

Remote Control: The DPX301 comes with the RC-517 wireless remote control with a full numeric keypad. It is powered by 2 "AA" batteries (supplied). The dimensions of the remote are: L=5.369", W=1.968", D=1.198".

Switchable Rear/Subwoofer Preouts: You can switch the rear RCA preamp outputs to a non-fading subwoofer output with independent volume control (-15 to +15), phase control (Normal/Reverse), and selectable crossover (50Hz, 60Hz, 80Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz or Thru).

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the unit is in Standby mode, the face/button illumination is "keyed." In addition, while the unit is in Standby mode, you can turn the clock display on or off. When the Clock Display is turned on and the unit is in Standby mode, the Clock Display is also "keyed." Pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely.

Display Illumination Control: When this function is active, the display turns off after 5 seconds if no operation is performed. This reduces the glare during night driving.

Display Dimmer: When the dimmer control is set to "on," the display automatically dims when the vehicle lights are turned on. When set to "off," the display doesn't dim.

Note: In order for the display dimmer feature to operate, the orange/white wire in the supplied wiring harness must be connected to the vehicle's headlight circuit.

Auxiliary Input: The DPX301 is equipped with a built-in auxiliary input. There is a set of stereo RCA jacks on a 6" pigtail on the back of the receiver for connecting an external audio source. The Auxiliary input can be activated/deactivated through the menu. When it's activated, you can select one of six names for the source: Aux, TV, Video, Game, Portable or DVD. When deactivated, Auxiliary does not appear as a source. With an optional adapter (item 113CAC1AX or 113KCAS220), you can also turn the unit's CD changer input into a second auxiliary input.

Optional iPod Adapter: This receiver is compatible with the optional Kenwood KCA-iP500 iPod control interface (item # 113IP500). When an iPod is connected to the interface, all of the iPod's controls will be disabled and it will be controlled from the receiver. With this interface, you'll be able to play your iPod music files through your Kenwood receiver and in most cases have all the titling information appear on the receiver's display.

Changer Controls

Compatibility: This unit is directly compatible with Kenwood changers manufactured in 1998 or later. If the changer has an O-N switch, the switch will need to be set to the "N" position.

Changer Controls: In addition to basic disc navigation features, this unit has the following changer controls: direct disc access (using the remote), direct track access (using the remote), track intro scan, track repeat, disc repeat, disc random, and all disc random.

CD Text/MD Display: When connected to a CD Text capable CD changer or an MD changer, this unit can display disc and track titles for discs encoded with disc and track title information. The text information can be scrolled manually or automatically.

Awesome !

Written By michael, Chambersburg, PA on Friday, June 22, 2007

Purchased this unit with the Sirius receiver and couldn't be happier. Crutchfield said it wouldn't fit exactly but to my surprise it looks great. Trim package looks like OEM , fits nicely in my '04 Ford Freestar. Sound is great. Instructions I thought were easy enough to follow. Adapters fit easily to make a quick connection. Absolutely satisfied with this product
This is my 3rd Kenwood purchase so I am familiar with the operations and menu features of Kenwood stereos. Display screen is crisp and legible. Would buy again!

Kenwood DPX301

Written By Tim, La Grange, KY on Saturday, June 09, 2007

Very pleased with the unit. Ordered it with the optional Sirius receiver for our 2002 Explorer. It was not at all difficult to install. The hardest part was removing the trim from around the factory radio/Air conditioning panel. Once that was off the installation went smoothly. Crutchfield sent several different adapter brackets in the installation kit and it wasn't self evident which was the correct one. After a little trial and error though, it was a snap.
The unit has excellent sound and is extremely easy to operate. The toughest part of getting it going was trying to figure out how to set the clock. The instructions are a little misleading on some points.
The only other problem is that for some reason the fuse blew the first time I turned it on. Haven't had any problems since replacing the fuse.
The interface with the Sirius receiver is great, and the controls are simple and easy to use.

Kenwood DPX301

Written By Robert, NYC on Friday, May 25, 2007

I purchased this radio for my 2003 Nissan XTerra, to fill the Double Din opening. There are lots of features and the radio has a nice look, especially at night. The paper manual which is included, as well as the PDF one avilable online is probably the worst manual I have encountered and it is lacking in descriptions and information. Fortunately, Crutchfield's service went above and beyond as usual to help me with everything. Overall, happy with the radio and the service. I am so busy that I did not install it myself, although I probably could have with the helpful directions, but I had it installed for a reasonable fee. They did not connect the dimmer as I would have liked but the job was sufficient. Thanks again Crutchfield, for superior service.

Excellent!

Written By Eli, Arlington, VA on Wednesday, May 16, 2007

I bought this head unit for my 98 Volvo S70; based mainly off the review given by the person who has the same car. The unit sounds great powering my cars 8 stock speakers. The clarity and separation of the sound is far superior to that of my stock unit. It took me a while to adjust adjust the sound to is best, and the manual didn't help much. Also, as many other people said, the display does disappear in direct sunlight. I mainly use my ipod plugged througgh the auxillary input and it sounds fantastic, but make sure the ipod's EQ is OFF for best quality. The understated looks of the unit fit my car nicely (crutchfield said it wouldn't) and the Double DIN was perfect and easy to install myself. Crutchfield is great and gave me everything i needed, fast. I HIGHLY recommend Crutchfield and this head unit.

Nice reciever/player

Written By Dave, Templeton, Ca on Thursday, May 10, 2007

Overall, this is a massive upgrade from the stock Honda (civic) stereo. Coupled with Infinity 6.5" 2-way front speakers and Sony 6x9's in the rear, I am very happy with the resulting sound. The unit has plenty enough punch for me without the addition of an amp, but some folks may want to add one if including a sub or if you are trying to fill a large vehicle with alot of sound. The installation and setup were very easy...the player comes in a default demo mode, but was absolutely no problem to defeat and get right to it. I use the aux imput for my X-M Roady 2 and it works flawlessly. The one complaint would be with the display. While it looks cool at night, during the day with any amount of either direct sunlight or bright ambient light, the display dissappears. Unreadable. If Kenwood can solve that problem in future models, they have a solid 5 star system.

Great System... Once you understand it

Written By Nancy, Los Angeles, CA on Wednesday, April 04, 2007

I decided to install this system primarily to get access to my ipod while driving. I used the InstallNet option and the installation and initial use of the system were great. The sound quality is very good and I like the way the unit looks in the dash. The only complaint that I have is that the directions provided by the company are a little hard to follow. They seem to leave out the first important step in any process. Particularly with using the ipod interface, I found myself doing a lot of "Well... I don't understand what they want me to do, so what happens if I push this button?" Be prepared to use a bit of trial and error when first trying to understand this system, but once you are on board you will love it.

Awesome unit - Horrible Instruction Manual

Written By dpaaf, Fairless Hills, PA on Tuesday, April 03, 2007

I recieved my Kenwood DPX-301 today. I was installing this in my 2004 Ford Explorer. I am familiar with car stereo installations. After completing the installation I found what others said in their reviews to be a 100% fact. The Instruction Manuel is horrible. I could not get out of the demo mode without first calling a Crutchfield technician (who was awesome). I also could not get the Aux input to turn on without help. The Crutchfield technician walked me through doing both things with ease and professionalism. The sound from the unit is great and this unit is very powerful. It looks great in my dash. The fit in my explorer was perfect. I am using my Pocket PC with Windows Media to play MP3 files through the Aux input. I cannot wait to get out on the road!!!

Very Poor AM/FM Reception

Written By Anthony, Ft. Worth, TX on Sunday, March 18, 2007

After six months of attempting to improve the reception of the tuner, both AM and FM, I have finally given up on this unit. Cruthfield tech support had me attempt to correct the issue(power antenna connection, etc.), but it appears that poor reception for the AM and FM bands are inherent in this Kenwood unit. I wish I would have made a different choice. Good sound from the CD and iPod interface, but drive 15 miles from your favorite broadcast station's transmitting tower and the tuner is useless. If listening to local music, news and traffic is important to you, DO NOT choose this unit.
