How do you like your music?

The receiver's front-panel USB port allows you to access and control the music stored on your iPhone or Android phone. iPhone users, you can also access and control your iHeartRadio® and Pandora® stations with the Kenwood's controls. With the USB port's AOA (Android Open Accessory) 2.0 capability, Android owners can load up the Kenwood Music Play app and control the phone's stored music directly from the receiver's controls.

The USB can handle MP3, WMA, or WAV music files on a thumb drive too. The Drive Change feature allows you to connect a memory card reader or USB hub to this Kenwood's USB input and select music from up to five memory cards or USB flash drives.

You can also add a SiriusXM tuner to access the impressive selection of sports, talk, news, and commercial-free music offered on satellite radio. You can also pop in a CD, get your local radio fix using the DPX301U's sensitive AM/FM tuner, or plug a portable audio player into the front aux input for more fodder for your mobile jukebox.

More cool stuff

Once you've got your music selected, you can use the DPX301U's 3-band equalizer and EQ presets to get that sweet sound you want. You can also use the two sets of preamp outputs to expand your system with an additional amp or powered subwoofer. And the included wireless remote means your passengers can control the entertainment while you worry about the driving.

Want to keep your steering wheel controls?

In most cars, you'll need an adapter to retain those controls with this car stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and radio, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. You'll see the adapters that work with your vehicle when you add this receiver to your cart.

iPhone Direct Connection: The Kenwood DPX301U's front-panel USB port can be used to connect your Lightning-connector or 30-pin dock connector iPod/iPhone to the head unit. The DPX301U supports audio playback, music navigation, information display, and charging of your compatible Apple device.

    • Lightning Connector: If you have a newer iPod/iPhone with the Lightning-connector, you can use Kenwood's Lightning connector-to-USB cable (113KCIP103 sold separately) or the Lightning-to-USB cable that came with your Apple device to connect your iPod/iPhone to the DPX301U.
    • 30-Pin Dock Connector: If you have an older iPod/iPhone with a 30-pin dock connector, you can use Kenwood's dock connector-to-USB cable (113KCIP102, sold separately) or the dock connector-to-USB cable that comes with your Apple device to connect your iPod/iPhone to the DPX301U.

Note: The head unit's USB connection provides 1A of current to power and charge your connected iPod/iPhone when your vehicle's ignition switch is set to the 'ACC' or 'On' position (if your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it).

iPhone Audio Playback w/ DAC Bypass: The USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's stored music and music apps to be loaded instantly to the head unit and sound quality to be maximized through the head unit's 16-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal to Noise ratio up to 105dB. The Kenwood head unit supports audio playback of stored music, music apps, and podcasts on your iPod or iPhone. The DPX301U provides music control and song/artist information display. You can choose between two operating modes.

    • Head Unit Mode + Song/Artist Info: From the head unit's front-panel controls you can search for stored music by Playlist, Artist, Album, Song, Podcast, Genre, and Composer. The contents of a Playlist or Category can be searched alphabetically (A-Z) or numerically (0-9). The DPX301U also supports Repeat (file/all) and Random (album/all) playback functions of stored music on your iPod/iPhone. In addition, you'll be able to control basic playback functions (such as Play/Pause, Previous/Next Track) from stored music and select music apps streamed to your iPhone. During Head Unit Mode, the DPX301U will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information such as Track number, Elapsed playing time, Artist name, Song title, and Album title. Newer iPod/iPhones with iOS 6.0+ allow you to continue to access your Apple device's touchscreen in this mode in order to access other applications; older iPod/iPhone devices will be locked during connection.
    • iPod/iPhone Mode: The iPod/iPhone Mode lets you control your older iPod/iPhone (iOS 5.1.1 and earlier) from its clickwheel or touchscreen. You'll still have access to basic playback controls (like Play/Pause & Previous/Next Track) from the head unit, but advanced navigation functions will be locked. No song/artist information is displayed in this mode. The unit will simply display "App & iPod Mode".

    Midrange 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.5 kHz -8 to +8 0.75, 1.0, 1.25
    Treble 10.0, 12.5, 15.0, 17.5 kHz -8 to +8 Fixed
Note: You can store EQ Pro bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (Disc, Tuner, Aux, USB, iPod, Android, and Pandora/iHeart Radio).

Sound Enhancements: The head unit provides further sound enhancements for your car audio system.

    • Bass Boost: The Kenwood CD receiver features a Bass Boost control that can be set to the following levels (1-3 or off).
    • Loudness: This function enhances low and high frequencies to make the sound clearer lower volumes. There are 3 levels (1-2 or Off).
    • Sound Reconstruction: When MP3 or WMA files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Sound Reconstruction function restores their high frequencies so the sound quality is closer to files encoded at a high bit rate. The processing is optimized for the compression format and the bit rate used. When Sound Reconstruction is Off, the unit plays the original sound stored in the audio file.
    • Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0 (-8 to +8 for Aux source).

Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Display Features

Variable Color Illumination: The Kenwood DPX301U features variable color display and button illumination. You can choose from one of 24 preset colors, have the unit scan through all 24 preset colors continuously, or customize your own color (RGB: 0-9). The display and button illumination can be set to the same color or set independently.

Text Scroll: The DPX301U will display song/artist information text from CD, USB, iPod, and Android. You can set the text scrolling feature to three different modes (Auto, Once, or Off) to scroll longer titles across the screen.

Brightness & Dimmer: You can adjust the brightness of the LCD from 0-31. You can also dim (on or off) the display. These setting only affect the LCD and do not affect the button illumination.

12Hr/24Hr Clock: The head unit can be set to display a 12hr or 24hr clock. The unit also displays the day (Sun, Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri, or Sat). The clock can be displayed simultaneously with song/artist or station information. The day & time can be selected to remain on, even if the head unit is switched off (as long as the vehicle's key is in the accessory or start position).

Demo Mode: This unit features a Demo mode which can be turned On or Off within the menu.

2-DIN Chassis: The DPX301U has a 2-DIN chassis (also known as "Double-DIN"), and will fit in many vehicles with a large dash opening. The unit can be ISO-mounted using factory brackets, or Euro-mounted using the supplied mounting sleeve. There is also a supplied trim ring which allows it to fit perfectly in select Toyota vehicles with 200mm dash-openings. As always, please consult the Crutchfield Car Selector to verify fit with your vehicle.

    Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: The DPX301U comes with an IR remote control (RC-406) for wireless operation of the head unit. The remote will control Audio, CD, USB/iPod, and Tuner functions. It is powered by a single CR2025 3V lithium-cell battery (supplied).

    • Numeric Keypad: The wireless remote control features a numeric keypad (0-9) which allows direct track access of your music tracks & files (from CD or USB), as well as AM/FM presets.
    • Attenuator: The CD receiver features an Attenuator button on the supplied remote control that turns the volume down very quickly with one touch of the button.

Steering Wheel Remote Compatibility: The head unit features an OEM steering wheel remote control input wire (blue/yellow) within the included wiring harness that lets you keep your vehicle's factory radio steering wheel remote controls when used with an optional steering wheel audio control adapter (sold separately). Please consult Crutchfield's Outfit My Car to see if your vehicle is compatible.

    richard p.  Jun 09, 2015

Yes,you can change the illumination, there a good selection of colors. Once you made your choice it doesn't change. Mine matches my dashboard color. Pretty cool.
    donald  Jun 04, 2015
    A
you can select several options for the ilum color: option 1: continuously changes, option 2: select from one of the pre programed colors (30 somthing different shades of blue, green, red, yellow, etc) and option3: designate your own color with a RGB selector. I use option 2 - one of the greens was a perfect match for my pickup.
    daniel m  Jun 04, 2015

Yes, you can change the color. The unit goes into "demo" mode at turn on, but you can stop that with the center volume nob. You have to go into the menu for the unit to change the color/appearance. The manual for the unit has the details on doing that.
    john  Jun 04, 2015
    A
You can set the color that you want from the many colors on the radio or set it to continuously change. The manual explains how to do this or the support team can run you through the procedure.

    Q
Will I need a new amp, and do I need to solder any wires?
    andrew  Apr 08, 2015
    10 answers
    A
No new amp required! No soldering!
    sid  Jul 08, 2015
    A
If you want an amp, you can use one, but it is not necessary. No soldering required if you use the wiring harnesses that they will give you.
    jay  Apr 13, 2015
    A
A new amp is not needed, this is a receiver. It has all of the components integrated. The unit DOES support an external amp (say, for a sub-woofer), but this is not required. I installed my Kenwood in a 2000 VW Jetta and used the wiring harness adapter from Crutchfield. Worked great.
    john  Apr 12, 2015
    A
what are you putting it in
    w james  Apr 10, 2015
    A
You only need an amp if you put in subwoofers and I used a crimping tool and a wire harness to put mine in very easily.
    brian  Apr 10, 2015
    A
You should not need a new amp unless you want one. no soldering either just use the wiring harness and either tape the wires together or use crimp on some quick connects.
    david  Apr 09, 2015
    A
I think the power in the deck is ok. There are times when I have to turn it up more than I would like to, but that isn't often, and it's more a problem with how I downloaded my songs through ITunes. And in my case, I received the connectors that allowed me to hook up the deck to my existing Chevrolet connector. You will have to crimp the wires together (color coded) and that's very easy to do, but no, no soldering required. Overall, I'm very happy with the deck and the features it has. I just learned how to use Pandora, IHeart radio and I'm addicted. :)) Rick
    richard p.  Apr 09, 2015

Soldering and heat shrink is always better than butt connectors, but not necessary! You will not need a new amp as long as you buy the full kit with the adapter for the factory amp and steering wheel controls.
    curtis  Apr 09, 2015
    A
I vant say if a new amp will be needed but I would assume that the one you have will probablt be ok. The soldering of the joints removes the possibility of connections coming loose from vibration or weak connections. I soldered all my wires.
    douglas  Apr 09, 2015
    A
This will depend largely on your vehicle. For details on installation please contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and give you the details on what you will need for an installation.

    A
You will want to contact an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat to discuss compatibility with your factory system. They will be able to pull up your vehicle and see if this will integrate. If it does not, then they will also be able to discuss other options with you.
