If you've got a double-DIN dash opening, take out that wimpy factory radio and slide in some Kenwood quality. The DPX308U CD receiver offers strong performance and useful features that'll make you wonder why you waited so long to replace your old radio.

Ready to roll with your iPod®
Once you plug your player into the handy front-panel USB input, just press the "iPod" button to the left of the big control knob and you're ready to go. You'll feel right at home when you navigate your tracks and playlists, with the help of easy-to-use search tools like Alphabet Search. The dedicated "Search" and "Return" keys eliminate the need to work through menus when you're making a quick search.

You can also switch quickly to "passenger mode" to control your iPod® or iPhone® from the device — useful if you're listening to streaming content like Internet radio stations. Kenwood also includes a wireless remote so your passengers can control the entertainment while you worry about the driving.

Variable color options
Playing nice with your iPod is important, but you want a new receiver to look good, too. The DPX308U cuts a distinctive figure with its sleek styling, glossy exterior, and prominent control knob. To top it off, you can set the display and button colors to match your car's interior. You'll be looking forward to driving at night, when you can turn up the sound and the lights.

Sound quality to rock your ride
This Kenwood's built-in MOSFET amp will impress you with its clean power, so turn it up if you want. You can use the 3-band equalizer for precise adjustment of the highs, mids, and lows, while eight EQ presets allow quick shifts to a tone curve that matches your music. The Speaker Settings function tailors the output of the receiver to match the size and type of speakers you've got installed in your vehicle.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?
In most vehicles, you can use an adapter to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Kenwood stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and the Kenwood, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

iPod note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver or its optional iPod adapter.

    Why replace your factory radio?

Two good reasons - sound quality and cool features. A new car stereo offers power that's superior to most factory radios, along with more sophisticated tone controls. And most car stereos offer built-in or optional features that add safety and fun to life in your car, including inputs for your iPod or MP3 player, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cell phone calls, satellite radio or HD Radio reception, and connections for building an audio system in your car.

Only used and rated this unit on USB support. I had this unit for over a year before selling the car (the radio helped). I needed USB. It does what it claims. Now I need another for a used Toyota. What troubles me is the fact that the volume knob on my factory radio can be reached without leaning forward. But, the rotary knob in the Kenwood is off more to the other side where I would have to lean forward to reach it. Kenwood can change that I hope on the next go-around. Also, had to find and fumble with the remote to change folders because there was no dedicated button to do that (and there is on the factory Toyota CD radio I now have. Will someone PLEASE design a radio that will respond to voice (PAUSE) followed by other voice commands like Advance and Change Folder. My Garmin now does that just fine and I don't need to be pulling off the interstate just to skip a folder.

Pros: Nice if you need Bluetooth. Excellent hardware.

Cons: User Interface, position, size, and availability of buttons could use some more thought. The lettering was small enough and the unit far enough away that neither of my bi-focal lenses could be used, so had to get a special driving glass perscription that focused on just the dash or the road.

The factory unit in my '06 Focus died so it was time to replace it. I liked the USB and aux inputs on this unit and the price was right so I gave it a roll. It sounds way better than the factory unit, which is really the bottom line for me. But I have to admit, the buttons on this thing are itty bitty and so hard to work when you're trying to pay attention to the road. Also, setting all the settings involves a lot of pogo-sticking through menus, which was tedious and I tended to get lost.

I really would have preferred more conservative styling. Really, at this price range I couldn't find any that didn't look all gee golly whiz bang. I don't need that. I want sound quality and good usability of the controls.

Finally, I bought the Metra steering-wheel control interface and the silly thing thinks this is a JVC unit and therefore took several extra, maddening steps to install.

Pros: Sound quality better than the factory unit

Cons: Setup menus difficult to use Tiny buttons

    Sweet replacement unit!

This stereo replaced the great sounding am/fm 6 disk Cd, cassett system (210 watts total). The old systems LCD display(s) started to get buggy, and wouldn't show correctly at time after 10 year of ownership! So it was replaced with this system. I can honestly say that the sound Quality is the same or better...no complaints there as I was very satisfied with the factory unit.

Pros: Great Looks, Great sound, Easy install with the right DD tools, easy navigation once you get the feel for it!

Cons: Could come with a more indepth user manual

This deck has some great features and extreme ease-of-use right outta the box!! I like how you can set the display screen as one color and the buttons as another. Sound quality is light years better than the factory deck in my girlfriend's Camry.

Pros: Source selection for iPhone, Aux In, CD and Radio are all in one button; dual color selection; remote included.

Cons: There are no rear inputs for Aux In and USB, which means you MUST have wires hanging off the front of a brand new afternmarket deck!!!

Awesome radio for the money!! I put it in my 1998 explorer and it sounds amazing! Be sure to get the proper harness with the kit. I accidentally ordered the wrong one, but Crutchfield helped me troubleshoot the issue and sent me the proper one for free! Great value, great customer support and just an overall pleasure to deal with!

Pros: Great sound quality, USB port, cool color display and ease of use.

Cons: None in particular. I had to modify my dash a little, but thats not the radios fault.

Great Head Unit! - despite Crutchfields car selection tool saying that this head unit wont fit in any 86 or older Dodge Conquests or Mitsubishi Starions this stereo fits perfectly with minor modifications to the factory mounting brackets. I was amazed at how good this stereo looks in the dash, it has the clean look of a stock head unit but with much better sound quality and features and at night it lights up bright enough to see it clearly but not so bright that its brighter than all the other dash lights or puts a glare on the windshield. I also like the equalizer and all the other nice features that show how well designed it is like the separate amp and power antenna leads so the antenna only goes up when using the radio and your amp will still turn on regardless of what source you are listening to. I think this radio will look great in any car old or new and i highly recommend it. I also plan on buying the PAC SWI-RC steering wheel adapter because i know it will work with Conquests and Starions as well

Pros: all the nice features and the sound quality

Cons: none this is a great product

Bought this radio to install in my sister's 2003 Mazda Protege. Could not have been happier. Was looking for something that would easily fit and have iPod control. Almost bought a cheaper JVC model and am soooo glad I stumbled upon this Kenwood. All the reviews I have read to-date about this radio are absolutely correct. Makes the stock speakers sound a LOT better. Was easier than I expected to install. Did not need the Metra DIN Head dash kit whatsoever. When researching radios that would fit the Protege, this radio had a couple red flags regarding installation. "Modified Fit" was not correct as the rear factory bracket did not have to be removed and the mounting hardware that came with the radio worked fine. Nothing extra needed. I still trust Crutchfield for knowing what fits and doesn't, but hope their techs take another look at this radio and Mazda applications. Probably could have saved money in not tacking on the extra installation accessories.

Almost perfect, except...the tuner preset buttons are tiny, the clock is not visible when the radio is powered off, and the menu system when you want to change settings or adjust the audio is rather cumbersome.

Pros: Sound quality. Stock speakers now sound upper class. Display. Lots of info and color that can be turned off if desired! Clock visible continually when powered up. iPod Control.

Cons: Tiny preset buttons. Clock not visible when turned off. Less than smooth menu system. Looking to adjust bass and treble quickly? Not gonna happen. Glossy front panel. Loves to attract fingerprints.

I purchased my receiver 2 weeks ago and purchased an install card. I am enjoying my new receiver and had a good experience using install card. I thought about installing it myself, but after reading some of the other posts, I decided to pay to have someone else install it. The best money I could spend. The receiver makes my original speakers that came with my car a little better, but noticably different when I use my ipod! WOW! No regrets about purchasing this unit yet. I am very pleased with it.

Pros: Good looking Great value Good sound

I've bought many receivers over the years for my cars and have been satisfied with them all, but this receiver has the best sound of any I've bought. The complaint I most often have about car stereos is the lack of bass response; I do not have that complaint with this system. This receiver gives you the ability to tailor the frequency response in several bands as well as a basic "bass boost" function which allows you to tune out the frequency losses due to the inherently complex environment created by the interior of a car. You won't be disappointed if you buy this unit.

I have been using Kenwood products since the 8-Track days. Kenwood has never let me down and the Kenwood DPX308U lives up to the billing. Having features you would see in much more expensive units, this Kenwood CD receiver is a great value for the money. Equipped with 22 watts RMS (the actual power to the speakers), the MOSFET amp delivers plenty of punch for normal everyday driving. This unit is installed in my 2003 Ford Ranger 4-door supercab. Ranger has a 6" X 8" Pioneer speaker in each of the 4 doors and 2 Pioneer 10" subwoofers and sub amp behind the front seats. You can change the face to 24 different preset colors or you can customize it to your car's exact color to make it look factory. There is bass, mid, treble, subwoofer and volume offsets for each source (tuner, USB, portable/iphone and CD). You also can adjust the unit to the type of speakers you have in your vehicle 4", 5" 6", 6 X 9 or OEM. The volume offset maintains equal volumes for each source so you don't get blasted and hurt your speakers when switching from one source to another. The Kenwood DPX308U is also pretty easy to use by following the instructions in the instruction manual. It is better to set up everything before hitting the road. I have no problem recommending this Kenwood DPX308U CD receiver to anyone who is looking for a great CD receiver and wants alot of features and don't break the bank! If you can use a DD din receiver, you won't be disappointed with this one!

Pros: Multi color options with user custom setting, clock is super-easy to set, many features for the money, good clean sound at all volume levels, nice looking unit with easy to read display. Custom speaker settings, volume offset and bass, mid and treble lever adjustment and freq settings make a great custom sound for your particular vehicle. Clock displays time even if unit is in Standby mode. Also the SW preout is nice for adding a subwoofer and amp. Great features for what you pay.

Cons: Only reason I did not give 5 stars is because all you get with this Kenwood DPX308U is a "quick-start" guide which only gives basic features. You have to download the "instruction" manual and then print out 41 pages. This manual should have been included so when you are sitting in your vehicle setting everything on the unit, you could refer to the instruction manual. As for the unit itself, I cannot find any cons.

Buy this. Dont look at any other double dins.

If Sound Quality had 10 stars I would give it 10. I have a 04 Nissan Titan with Rockford Fostgate sound system and it sounded great with stock head unit. With this head unit it sounds 10x better. With the truck turned off the head unit looks stock. It want attract theives. But when you turn it on and the lights go to flashing it looks down right sexy. The only problem was hooking it up. IDK if this is a titan problem or what but it was difficult to say the least installing this puppy. I had to take a razor and shave the edges off the brakets to make it fit. Also the wires were kind of confusing. But once the headache of installing it went away I was thrilled with this baby. If i would have payed 350 for this I still would have been thrilled. Im begging you. If your looking for a double din. Your search is over.

Pros: Looks stock when not on. Looks amazing when on. Sound Quality is unmatched by any head unit I have owned or heard.

Cons: Needed painkillers after installing it.

i waited 3 years to put in a new radio, and i finally found the one. the Kenwood DPX308U was the absolute best choice. i hooked it up to my pioneers which made the sound so crisp and you could definitely hear the difference between the ken wood and my factory hook up. Not only does it sound good, but it looks pretty awesome as well. Installation was easy especially for someone like me who knows nothing about audio. just used the crutch field guide and a youtube how to video and i was all set. the radio also compliments my kicker CompVR12 and produces a quality sound that even my neighbors don't mind hearing when i pull in my driveway at 2 in the morning haha. I recommend this product to anyone who needs to put in a double din unit. the only issue i have had is that sometimes it has trouble reading the iPod. it's a simple fix and nothing to get to frustrated over.

Pros: looks great sounds great didn't empty my pockets

Cons: has trouble reading iPod sometimes.

I would like to start by saying that this deck does an awesome job of doing what it says it will (and more) and has the right mix of features for an awesome upgrade to any car that needs to fill that larger double-din space in the dash. The increase in sound quality from stock to this deck was instantly noticeable (at least in my car 2001 Subaru Forester). The Aux and Ipod inputs are in a great location in the front, it blends right into the dash of the car and looks quite stock (when the car is off), the knob has great response when adjusting your settings and volume and the display illumination settings are outstanding. Furthermore, the deck itself bolted straight into the factory brackets and slid right in. The bottom line is if you're looking for something that will improve sound quality, look great in your dash (especially at night!) all while not breaking the bank with minimal installation time then this is a great deck to look into.

Pros: -Great sound quality -Looks awesome (especially at night) -Easy to install -Relatively inexpensive

Cons: -Soldering and heat shrinking the factory-head unit adapter plug wires was a pain but you'll deal with that with every deck.

This is a great looking and sounding unit, but there's a flaw (pretty big issue from Kenwood) Once installed, I realized that this Kenwood DPX308U had the parametric EQ not working. Contacted KW CS and had a call back from one of the 'specialist". Here the short story:

I spoke with this Kenwood CS 'specialist' and we figured out that there was an actual problem with my car audio stereo (so it seems). Got a replacement and the same problem still exist (the parametric equalizer is not working. Only a standard fix Bass/Middle/Treble eq works). Today I spoke with a Kenwood dealer about this issue and turns out this model DPX308U has NO parametric eq even though on the stereo there is the whole actual access to a parametric eq! I think this is VERY bad. Why a manufacture would advertise a stereo with parametric eq, install the software with the application on the same and than there's no functionality (only a fix Bass/Middle/Treble eq works). Even worse, a specialist doesn't even know about it? BTW, this DPX308U is the only stereo double DIN (non DVD/Nav device) on the Kenwood catalog. It should be pretty easy to know about a detail as this one! Although I really like this stereo, one of the main reason I bought it, was the parametric Eq.

Very disappointed, not by the unit, but by Kenwood.

Still, if you don't care for a"sophisticated" EQ section, this 2DIN unit is a great stereo.

Pros: Great look. Good sound. pretty easy to use

Cons: Para EQ not working. Limited USB functionality

The install was'nt to bad for the exception on the plastic bracket that was suppose to mount on the back of the Radio, there was no holes for mounting. The Tech said it wasnt needed so why did the instruction show mounting it. I fabricated a different bracket to use I didnt trust the way the Tech suggested.

Pros: cost and looks great in the dash

Cons: Installation and mounting were somewhat confusing.

I bought this receiver because my 2006 Grand Cherokee's NAV/stereo system got stolen and I didn't want to spend too much money on replacing it. I had to get a double DIN because I didn't want to lose the "look" of the previous system. For the price it is a decent stereo, but there are a couple of things that I do not like; the reception on it is pretty close to terrible, it is a lot worse than the precious stereo I had, I do not know wether this is a Kenwood issue or the receiver itself. The controls are a bit annoying, especially setting up all the options for colors, etc... After a couple of hours of messing around with the settings I finally got it to stay the way I wanted ( it gets frustrating after the first hour). The other thing that I do not like is the controls for the steering wheel, (I know this is a rating for the receiver and not all the rest of the stuff I had to get but I want to include it here anyways), even though Crutchfield had me buy two different harnesses for the stereo so I could keep the "original" steering wheel controls on the Jeep, it simply does NOT work as advertised, after literally hours ( read days) of programming and reprogramming, over and over again, the installer and I decided to give up and leave the controls somewhat close to what the original buttons do. Since I've had the car for a while this was one of the most annoying things about getting this stereo and all the extra stuff needed so I could keep the "original" controls.

Pros: Price for a double DIN, looks cool, a lot of options for the settings, installation is lightning fast.

Cons: Annoying controls, very bad to horrible reception, steering wheel controls do not work as they should (on a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee).

Im really enjoying my cd player. It is very cool to look at especially during the night. I installed the equipment myself and this was the first time ever. All i really needed to know was the correct wires to attach to each other, with the help of the guide that came with the equipment, I was able to install it correctly. My factory system sounds amazing as ever know, I have a 97 volvo and the sound was already good, now its great.

    Pros: i like this product.

Great stereo! Fairly easy to install and looks great inside my Explorer. The harness that came with the unit had gain controls so I was able to set those as well as the frequency settings on the receiver. My one knock on the unit is ease of use while driving. Actually, I am used to controlling my music thru my Ipod anyway so having the AUX input is great. Thanks crutchfield for help with the install. Its been awhile since i installed my last unit. Overall, great stereo! Lovin the TRON effect at night!

Pros: Great looks! Good power! Can definitely run a good or great system with this receiver. For the money you cant beat it!

Cons: Some menu options are a little too in depth to try to use while driving. But after some use they are not hard to figure out. Also wish the USB would let you control your music thru the IPOD but the AUX input takes care of that!

Not sure if it's the Polk MM651's or the unit but at 3/4 volume the distortion is terrible. The install is perfect so can't isolate the distortion problem. As always with the cheat sheets from Crutchfield the install was a snap.

Pros: easy to install, less than 1/2 hour, after pre-wiring on the kitchen table. Directions from all parts easy to follow

Cons: face a little busy while playing, and the distortion!

I bought this unit as a stock replacement. It looks good in the dash but not too blingy as to draw too much attention from the "I would rather take yours than buy it my self, entitled" crowd. Intallalation was easy and straight forward. YOU DO NOT NEED THE CHIME ADAPTOR. You just have to match wires and run a constant 12v to keep memory and clock. My fuel light and seatbelt light still work and since I am a gauges guy, I look at the dash anyway on a regular basis. JUST KNOW THE CHIMES WILL NOT WORK! The stereo has good sound through stock speakers although it should be better when I replace those. The iPod control is pretty cool but I find it easier to use the iPod itself. The display lighting has been updated before I received it and will keep the color selection fine. I left the random selection for a couple days but it got annoying real quick and I set it to match stock lighting.

Pros: Kenwood quality, looks ( not too blingy) sound, options.

Cons: Menu is a bit convoluted.

The head unit works fine, but I did struggle through setting up the unit and learning how to use functions, using the online PDF manual. There's a "Quick Start Guide" that refers to the "Manual", but according to Crutchfield, they no longer include a manual booklet. So, you need to print out the manual and staple it together if you want to use it in your car. Most times, a manual isn't a big deal, because it is usually easy to figure out a stereo unit. I mean, how tough could it be to use a radio? This one is! Want to tune your radio? If your radio is set up to tune specific stations, and you want to do a "search" you'll need to go into the submenus and make a change to use the "search" mode. There isn't a single button to make the change or an alternate search switch. I had to print off the PDF version of the manual, cut it down, staple it and store this 41 page printout (single sided, of course) it in the glove box. Kenwood should include a produced manual (two sided) for a unit with this many submenus. The sound is fine. The look is fine. If you want to easily switch between applications, there are sometimes a pile of options that are not that easy to figure out. Think distracted driving is a problem for texting? Try driving down the road and making a few switches on this unit.

Pros: Easy Install with Crutchfield harness/bracket

Cons: Not intuitive at all...way too much hassle with all the sub-menus. NO LONGER INCLUDE A MANUAL BOOKLET!!!

Over all this is a nice radio. Two things I would change is the addition of a rear USB port. I was aware there was not one when I purchased it, but now having it installed in the car it would be nice to hide the cord for the I-pod. Secondly it would be nice if it displayed the Title/Artist during radio play.

Sounds Great, compared to the 1998 Kenwood that was in my Subaru Forester. It's a little hard to control the IPhone with it, but once I made some play list I was good to go. I enjoy all the color options and Q settings. Deffinately worth the money.

I purchased this for my 2011 Honda Element LX. I wanted iPod integration that worked like it does on my actual iPod. This unit delivers. Easy to use and set up. Many cool functions and the sound is much better than the stock unit I replaced. I also like the custom color function so you can match it to your vehicle.

The only thing I do not like is the fact that the iPod USB plug was not duplicated in the rear of the unit so I can keep my iPod out of view in the glove box. The wire sticking out of the unit in the front is annoying. I knocked off one star for that. However the rest of this unit works so well I can forgive that.

    I will definitely recommend it.

My 2006 Cobalt didn't come with an auxillary input, and FM modulators for my iPod never worked clearly. Since my life evolves around my iPhone and its music, this has been the best replacement! The controls are easy to use and navigate through tracks with. The display colors are fully customizable and this has made my stereo actually sound better! You can tweak all aspects of the bass, mids, and treble. The sound quality is very close to my buddy's Bose system in his vehicle and quiet. I highly recommend this for iPod users! **I didn't need to update firmware to retain my custom colors**

    Good Stereo

Written By amy, Henderson, NV on Tuesday, July 05, 2011

I replaced my JBL factory stereo in my 2007 Sequoia. This is a good stereo, but not great. To make sure I was making a good choice, I called Crutchfield and asked a few questions. Since this reads from a USB, you may think that it works with any device you can connect with a USB. I asked, and was told, this should work with my MP3 player. Wrong. It only works with ipods or memory stick (thumb drive). Second, it doesn't work with the steering wheel controls in my car. I purchased, then returned the steering control adapter kit, because this model doesn't have the output for it - you have to pay more and get the next model up. If I could stand to be without my music for a while, I would have returned it. I purchased an ipod, as my original intention was to listen to my large catalog of music. It does well with the ipod, but I am still disappointed that my usually perfect Crutchfield purchase just wasn't this time.

Installed this in a 2007 impala and it fits clean. My girlfriend loves the colors, and it's simple to use. You have a fair amount of control over the bass/mids/highs; you can change the frequency/level/q of each, so you can get really clean crisp results. Looks factory, but adds some class and is eye candy in the nighttime.

The color going back to default demo mode after turning the car off has been fixed. Mine stays on the colors I selected for it. With GM's double din setup, there are not many stereos that look good in a GM dash. This stereo fit perfect and looks good and flush in the dash. I was able to set the buttons to one color and the display to another color and they match my gauge colors perfectly. This stereo looks factory in my car. The USB input works good, that is the reason I bought it. The USB stereo upgrade option on my car was $795, so for $200, this stereo is way better.

This item is everything it says it is. The IPOD interface is seemless the audio options are superb and the features are more then I could ask for. I replaced a factory premium GM Delco head unit in my 1996 Cadillac Concours with the Kenwood DPX-308U and love it. Install was a snap with the included free stuff from Crutchfield and the GM Onstar adapter works flawlessly. The DPX-308U came with firmware updated already by Crutchfield so no problems with the colors not holding. I think it is funny how some people deduct stars because it does not have certain features, when it is plainly clear in the specs that the feature in question is not available on this unit in the first place. Regardless this unit does what it says and has what it says, and at 199 you wont find a better one for the money. I will be back for another one for my Ford F350 soon.

Great Unit Other than Color Display Settings...

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

    Awesome Unit EXCEPT...

I had the same problem as earlier reviewer. When you change the color display to a single, fixed color rather than the changing multi-color display, after 5 minutes or so of the truck being turned off, the unit changes back to the ever- changing rainbow of colors. I bought the unit so I could match the color to my existing interior lights, and I can't stand that the unit is always changing colors. I am guessing this is a glitch since its a new model, but I can't tolerate the changing colors...

Everything else is awesome. Ipod/Iphone control works great and the unit is quick and responsive. I would love the unit if the display color would stay constant, but as is, I will be returning.
Recommend to buy if you don't mind the colors changing!

Replaced my factory radio in 03 GMC Sierra crew cab HD. Found that the speakers were bad, too! Crutchfield allowed me to get the discount on 2 pair of Kenwood speakers!! WooHoo! New setup sounds great. No issues with fit -- DID NOT have to modify the dash as noted in installation notes!

One issue remains... the receiver will not hold the display color setting (frustrating) even after trying multiple times following the manual. Demo mode must be turned off first (which I did). The custom color remains as long as I don't turn off the truck for more than 5 min or so. If I come back later in the day, the display always reverts to the continuously varied color scheme. Other settings are retained (presets, clock, etc...). Kenwood USA troubleshooting said I was doing it all correctly (not helpful).

Other than that, the sound and speakers are fantastic. It's a great sounding receiver.

Installed in 03 GMC p/u crew cab replacing factory radio. Fits in dash well with kit. Use the bezel from the included installation pack from Crutchfield. Also used the GM wiring adapter suggested to retain alert chimes-- easy! Also installed 4 Kenwood KFC-1662S 3-way speakers because factory speakers were bad (non functional). Sound is really great... contrary to some reviews on the speakers. Clean highs, nice bass, don't need heavy bass boost.

2 problems... receiver will not retain custom color display settings after truck is turned off for a few minutes. Other settings (station presets, clock) are retained. Followed manual steps exactly. Colors can be set and will stay when manually turning off radio and then back on. They just go back to continual color change after the truck is turned off for 5 min. or so. Yellow constant battery power wire seems to be good since clock and presets stay in memory.

I even tried the complete receiver reset/reboot button, but no change.

Ipod control is great. Just takes a little time to get used to the control sequence on the display.

I would buy/recommend again... just know about the color display issue. The sound is great!
