Our take on the Kenwood GXM 30 Antenna

by Matt Freeman

Built by Garmin for Kenwood, the GXM 30 smart antenna lets you use your compatible Kenwood navigation system to stay ahead of traffic conditions and enjoy XM Satellite Radio. The antenna plugs right into your Kenwood navigation processor and lets you subscribe to XM's NavTraffic™ service, which offers up-to-the-minute information on traffic flow along your programmed route. The GXM 30 can also process all XM Radio signals and send the finished product to your Kenwood system.

Available in select cities, NavTraffic warns you of incidents like accidents, construction, sporting events, and scheduled traffic diversions, giving you plenty of time to adjust your route. In many metropolitan areas, it even monitors in real time the current average speed on some high-traffic roads. If you've got a long commute, you'll find this an especially handy tool for avoiding sitting in bumper-to-bumper gridlock.

Both NavTraffic and XM Satellite Radio require subscriptions. You can get NavTraffic alone for just $9.99 per month, or add it to your $12.95-per-month XM Satellite Radio subscription for an extra $3.99 per month. Learn about XM's programming.

Please note: XM service is available only in the lower 48 states, not available in Alaska, Hawaii, or U.S. territories. NavTraffic is currently available in most major metropolitan areas.

General Features

Product Overview: The GXM30 XM Smart Antenna delivers XM Satellite Radio to the Kenwood KNA-G510 navigation system. Subscriptions to XM Satellite Radio and/or XM NavTraffic are required.

XM Satellite Radio: XM Satellite Radio offers more than 170 channels of continuous programming including 69 commercial-free music channels, 63 channels of News, Sports, Talk and Entertainment, and 21 channels of XM Instant Traffic and Weather (audio only information).

XM NavTraffic: Powered by NAVTEQ Traffic, XM is the nation's first satellite-based data traffic information service that enables a vehicle's on-board GPS navigation system to display current traffic information for select metropolitan areas, including the driver's chosen route. XM NavTraffic can display the following information:

  • Real-time traffic flow information (including the actual traffic speed data in some cases)
  • Unscheduled traffic incident data (such as accidents, disabled vehicles, and weather-related issues)
  • Scheduled traffic incident data (such as road construction and road closures)

Note: Because the reporting of information on traffic accidents, disabled vehicles, etc. relies on human interaction, the time span from when an incident occurs and when is displayed by XM NavTraffic will vary.

Installation: The GXM30 has a magnetic base and requires a view of the southern sky. It can be mounted in the vehicle (good), on the trunk (better), or on the roof (best). It will receive a signal through glass, but not through metal.

Navigation Features

Navigation Compatibility: The GXM30 are directly compatible with the Kenwood KNA-G510 Navigation system.

Detour: When a traffic delay is detected, you can detour around the area with one touch of a button.

NAVTEQ Traffic: NAVTEQ Traffic provides the traffic flow and incident information for the XM NavTraffic service. This data is collected from multiple sources across the country, including leading commercial traffic data providers, government departments of transportation, police and emergency services, road sensors, cameras, and real-time aircraft reports. NAVTEQ Traffic frequently performs extensive data quality processing to provide the most complete and accurate nationwide traffic information feed.

Market Coverage: The NavTraffic service is currently available in the following metropolitan areas:

Annapolis, MD Detroit, MI Nassau-Suffolk, NY Sarasota - Bradenton (Tampa), FL
Atlanta, GA Hartford - New Britain - Middletown, CT New York, NY Seattle - Tacoma, WA
Austin, TX Houston - Galveston, TX Norfolk - Virginia Beach - Newport News, VA San Antonio, TX

XM Weather: XM Weather, an included service of XM NavTraffic, provides basic weather data information from the XM WX Satellite Weather service. This weather information includes Current Conditions, 5 to 7 Day City Forecast (depending upon the city information), and Severe Weather Alerts.

Garmin GXM30 and Kenwood DNX8120

Written By Klaus, Atlanta, GA on Thursday, May 15, 2008
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just installed my Garmin GXM30 and my Kenwood DNX8120 navigation system. This combination works great! I setup all 3 services that are available for this combination:

XM Radio (audio)
NavTraffic
NavWeather

A couple of calls to XM and the services were available within 15 minutes. Note that you can order just the services you want. You could order just the XM Radio audio service, for example.

I like this XM solution better than the XM Direct as the entire XM radio is in the antenna! Just a single wire with a mini-USB connects to the back of the DNX8120. There was just enough room under the dash pad of my car for the GXM30 and the navigation antenna for DNX8120. I would have had much more difficulty installing the XM Direct setup with its 2 separate black boxes and an antenna.

One interesting note... When I first powered up my system the display indicated that the firmware for the GXM30 antenna was being updated. Glad to know that its firmware is upgradable!

I haven't tried the traffic feature yet, but the weather features are nice. It's not the Internet, but the weather maps are cool!

The GXM 30 is an excellent product for the money. It suppllies your navigation with XM RADIO, TRAFFIC ALERTS, WEATHER, STOCKS and much more. The down side being the large antenna. If you own the G510 kenwood navigation this antenna makes the naigation 100 times better. BUY IT YOU WONT BE DISAPPOINTED!!! And for the other raters I recieve all services in my small east coast town.

Kenwood GXM 30 Antenna

Written By Kelly, California on Tuesday, August 15, 2006

Unit is kind of bulkly,if you want a clean look you are not going to get it with this unit. But I finally found a place to mount it without it being seen (Under the vents near the windshield wipers)most cars do not have enough room for it, luckly I did or I would have sent it back, you do not want this thing to be seen. All features work,All the Nav features,XM radio,Stocks,Nav.Traffic, except the weather data service, which I've called both Kenwood and XM serveral times about the issue and neither can figure it out, I've replaced antennea's, checked software updates, weather stills does not work. And if you like quailty sound the XM's audio section is not very good, it sound like AM Stereo. By the way 7 months and still no weather. And seven months still waiting on bluetooth adapter (for Kenwood DDX6019 )

All in One

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Did all the research I could before my purchase. The GXM 30 is used for the Garmin units to provide XM radio and data services. Installation was easier that the terk units currently sold for the kenwood head unit. Plus the terk units require 2 serperate units with cable running in between to join them which did not look as cleacn on installation. This unit is plug and play, no way to screw it up. It only works through the kenwood nav unit though. Any it fired right up after installation and with the basic service I got some free data services included.
