Kenwood KDC-HD455U

This Kenwood's clean lines will look great in your dash.

Enjoy your music, however you get it

You can plug your iPod® or iPhone® into the front-panel USB input for easy navigation of your music library. This receiver's 24-bit digital-to-analog converter converts the music on your iPod, thumb drive, or CD with unerring accuracy so you enjoy detailed and lifelike sound.

If you enjoy listening to Pandora® Internet radio with your iPhone, you can use the receiver's controls to browse stations, plus rate and bookmark songs — all without having to pick up your phone. The handy front-panel auxiliary input lets you plug in other audio devices, like a Dock & Play satellite radio tuner.

Outstanding audio controls

The KDC-HD445U features a 3-band EQ, high- and low-pass filters, and selectable bass boost, a big step up from the simple bass and treble controls found on most factory radios. You can even switch quickly among the preset EQ curves to complement the type of music you're playing. Kenwood's Supreme Setting accentuates high-frequency info to put the sparkle back into your MP3, WMA, and AAC music.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Kenwood stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and this Kenwood, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

iPod/smartphone note: If you're going to use your iPod or smartphone with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for compatibility information.

Stereos have come a long way in playing nice with iPods and phones. Great work Kenwood and Crutchfield.

Pros: Sound, ease of connection with devices

Cons: Installation was easy, but stereo seems to "sag" just a bit at the back iPod menus are sort of annoying to navigate. It's easier to cue the device and then plug it in. When attaching device via USB, it sometimes picks a random podcast, playlist, etc instead of playing the last thing you listened to.

Decent head unit for the money.

We purchased this for our son's car in August 2013. Everything was great until November 2013 when the USB connection and the radio quit working. Kenwood would not replace the radio, they required us to send it off for repair which took about 7 weeks to get back. Everything worked fine again until last week (June 2014). Nothing is working now, radio, cd player, USB, etc. So I guess we will send it off once again to have it repaired. This is very frustrating and it would be nice if Kenwood would just replace it all together since this is the 2nd time in 10 months.

First and foremost Crutchfield, is a 5 star business to deal with. The only bad thing I can say about them, is that they made it hard to decide, with their great selection of radios they offer. After talking to one of their sales reps, I decided on this Kenwood KDC-HD455U. I need a replacement for my almost 30 year old Cadillac Eldorado, and this had all I really needed ...plus. The original radio only had a cassette, remember them? I wanted to upgrade to a CD player. All I really wanted was a radio with presets and a clock and this had them both. In the past I have installed radios in cars, but this was my first attempt in putting a modern radio in an older car. I was a little leery about how difficult it would be with the wiring and installation. Suffice it to say the only way the installation could have been easier, is if a tech came in the box the radio! The supplied all the instructions, both the manufacturers and their own, plus adapter harnesses and mounting kit that was FREE! I would definitely suggest also ordering the Posi-Products Connector Kit. They are great for quick, easy and secure connections. The wiring couldn't have been simpler. Besides a easy to read chart of the wires, all the wire were stamped as to where it was used! One installed the radio performed perfectly, even with 30 year old speakers.

Pros: Fast Delivery Easy to follow directions Easy installation Great sound radio and CD player for the price.

I wanted a HD radio with cd player, This radio fit the bill and worked well after I made up the wiring harness, plugged it and the antenna adapter in. I like it and overall I'm pleased. I do wish that replacement radios had a tuning control without multifunction buttons that do everything, but that keeps me reading the manual to learn how to do it.

Quick Easy install with supplied kit and instructions. The adapter works great considering my local big box stores wanted $160 for the adapter plus $40 for the installation kit and $65. for the install.

Pros: Unit works great, remote comes in handy with presets and quit source chages

Cons: A little confusing with all presets and audio controls using the same knob/button. Operating manual could be less technical and don't assume the reader has experience with modern stereo units.

I bought this to replace the factory stereo in my 2005 Chevy Blazer. I needed this so I could get the line in and USB port for my MP3 player and phone. The installation was a little tricky due to GM's cramped bay in the dashboard, but the instructions and mounting hardware provided by Crutchfield worked out great. As some other reviewers mentioned, getting the settings right on the radio is a bit tricky so make sure to read the manual. The stereo sounds great though, and the color-changing lights are a cool bonus.

Pros: Good Sound Line-in input USB for line in and charging HD Radio Cool lights

    Cons: Slightly confusing settings

The Kenwood KDC-HD455U is a great head unit for the price. I installed it in a 1997 Accord, with Infinity Kappa 3-way 6.5 speakers in the front doors and Sound Ordnance P-69 6x9 in the rear deck. The KDC-HD455U drives those 4 speakers well enough to give plenty of volume with no distortion. This system sounds great together - I am very pleased with the performance (turned out better than I expected!). The HD radio tuner is great - I can't live without HD now. And the USB and Auxiliary inputs on the front are very handy to expand access to your music. Plug in a flash drive or your mp3 player and you have loads of music available without having to carry around a bunch CDs. This unit has lots of functionality that I haven't had time to explore yet. There are enough audio controls to shape the music the way you like - the sound quality is great. Some of the menu navigation is not very intuitive, but that's a minor issue. Crutchfield's MasterSheet was a big help with the installation because I had to remove the manual gearshift knob and would not have known the 'trick' without the sheet. I installed it in September 2013 but wanted to see how it performed before submitting a review. So far (6 months), this unit is great and I couldn't be happier. Thanks Crutchfield for offering an awesome product at a good price!

Pros: Drives 4 speakers well enough to give plenty of volume with no distortion. HD radio - can't live without it now. USB and Auxiliary inputs on the front. Easy installation with Crutchfield's MasterSheet (big help!) and installation kit.

Cons: Tuning mode is either Seek or Manual - you have to access the menus and set it to one or the other. I wish the unit had separate tuning buttons on the front panel so you could choose seek or manual tune without having to access the menus. Cannot read the display in direct sunlight - gets totally washed out. I block the sun with my hand and can read it then. The 6 preset buttons are a little small - I wish they were bigger. But these are minor complaints - I would buy this unit again without

I recently purchased the Kenwood KDC-HD455U from Cruthfield after hearing great things on their value and service support. I wanted an after-market reciever that had HD radio,Ipod connectivity, and CD. This receiver met my needs and Crutchfield thru in my Jeep wiring harness and adapter for no cost .Great deal after pricing separate elsewhere. Installation was a breeze and matched perfectly with the four Kenwood speakers I also got from them, which also came with free brackets and harnesses. After installing. I decided to add a powered subwoofer( Sound Ordanace B-8P) also from them and the combination all works beautifully together and makes my driving experience(1 1/2 hrs. per day) much better. I highly recommend the Crutchfield team for their value and support.

Pros: Head unit works seamlessly with Ipod and gives the ability to tune your system in perfectly-has usb port that plugs to ipod and plays and charges at the same time- also has tuning for subwoofer controls so no need to use controls on back of sub- plenty of power(22 watts RMS per channel(4) and speakers match at 25 per speaker, so no risk of blowing even at peak volume.

    Cons: None that I found.

I have an older Kenwood KDC-HD545U Head Unit and it works well so I expected this unit to be very similar and it is in most respects but it does have a few more features and the display colors are dazzling. I installed it into a 2002 Chevy Prizm and had to trim the panel opening to accommodate the width of this radio.

Pros: Feature rich and display colors look great.

Cons: The limited capabilities of the display with respect to setting up various features is cumbersome. If this device could Bluetooth or USB to a Smartphone for all setup/programming it'd be tops!

The Kenwood sounded great in my Blazer. It was EZ to in stall. The three per-out are what attacked me to it. I used all three. I had to turn the bass amp down. It blows away the Super Turner I replaced, and payed twice as much for.

Pros: Three per-outs for Amps. EZ to use.

Paired up with Infinity Reference Series speakers this system sounds great. The use of the equalization built into iPods and MP3 devices really deliver outstanding sound dynamics and quality.

I installed this unit to replace my factory cassette/receiver. The unit works and sounds better than I thought it would. There is a learning curve to access all the available features. As with anything new, just read the owners manual cover to cover, and experiment with all the options. I have previously installed triaxials in the front doors, and quadriaxials in the rear, and the improvement is audio quality with this head unit is 10 fold. The purchasing experience, using Crutchfield, was the best ever. Their support is top notch, and the documentation included was key to a trouble free installation.

Pros: Good looking, infinite number of variable settings, both audio and visual, excellent audio quality, and easy to operate, once you've learned all of the features. Again, read the manual, more than once.

    Cons: None, as of yet.

I bought this for my '95 Z28 and like how it looks, sounds, and fit. A great way to update any older car with today's technology. It especially plays well with my factory Bose subwoofer with thump-free power up/power down.

Cons: Like all aftermarket car stereos these days the buttons are tiny.

My son wanted to replace the stock radio in the 2005 Kia Sorento we had gotten for him to drive. We finally broke down and succumbed to his intermittent nagging after almost a year. Now I wish we had done it sooner... well, first we wanted make sure he could establish himself as a good driver and not wrap the thing around a telephone pole. He succeeded. He was looking for a stereo that had an input for his iPod, which this unit does and it also has a USB port so he can charge his iPod as well. I told him not to become mesmerized by the changing colors of the faceplate and to keep his eyes on the road. This does not seem to be a problem for him. Dad thinks the morphing colors are pretty cool, though. The ease of installation was unbelievable. The most time consuming and tedious part of the process was splicing the wires to the new harness. Everything fit when reassembled and it looks good to boot. Kenwood didn't disappoint on this one nor did they rely on resting on their reputation. This stereo receiver is a hit.

Pros: Looks good. Easy self-installation. USB port and line-in for iPod listening. Sounds great. Great price for the features included.

Cons: Just the slightest of gaps on either side of the storage bin below the unit on my particular application on the 2005 Kia Sorento. Not all models may have this space to fill below the receiver. The gap is hard to notice unless you're looking for it.

This thing died after about 7 weeks. I tried to explain what the situation was to the Tech, and he kept interrupting me and telling me what to do. After 20 years as an industrial maintenance mechanic and 30+ years as a musician, I am more than familiar with burned out electronics (the smell is a dead giveaway). I replaced it with another unit from a big box store, and deposited this piece of junk in the trash.. Back to rockin'.....

The unit is very attractive, and the controls are easy to use once you get used to how they work. I had to read the setup instructions carefully, but they were not that hard to understand if you go step by step. The first few days of using the unit, I kept the instruction guide near by so I could refer to it if I had to change some function. I do recommend buying this Kenwood receiver. I don't have a smart phone or steering wheel audio controls or any apple products so I don't have a review for those interface types.

I just needed to replace the stereo in my 2005 Saturn Vue and wanted something that I could plug my Ipod into. Install was easy with the installation kit. I hooked this up to my original equipment speakers. It has a setting for OEM speakers. This unit sounds amazing. Easy to tailor to my likes. Decent bass without a subwoofer. Ipod works great with this unit. Everything displays right there on the face. Then I tried just uploading my songs to a flash drive as the Ipod cord was kind of a pain. This worked just as good. No more Ipod or cords to fool with or hide when I park just a small flash drive. I love my new stereo.

Pros: Great price, amazing sound, compatible with Ipod or flash drive, great looks, easy to read display. I love the changing colors.

Cons: There is a little bit of a learning curve to figure out how to work the unit but it does everything I want. I am a little above average for a 56 year old guy when it comes to techy stuff.

This product is just exactly what I was looking for, It gives me the sound qualities that I can hear and understand while I am traveling. Both the recorded sounds and the sounds over the airwaves are outstanding. I did have some difficulty in learning how the functions are obtained when using the system. I did not understand what it meant to reset the system and get the programs out of the demonstrative mode. It would have been a big help if there was a" road Map" paragraph in the instructions that would have taken me thru the complete set up procedures. I am very pleased that the entire system worked as well as it did and the finished product looks just as if a professional installer had done the work.

Pros: I cannot over emphasize the importance to me it has been by having Crutchfield available to assist with complete and technically correct assistance by telephone and internet communication. They performed above and beyond as far as I am concerned and they made my problems very minor or non-existent.

Cons: There are no cons to this review, every item was taken care of by the representatives.

Great HU for my needs.. This is my first venture into HD radio, and it has already proven its value. From setting up the wiring harness (color code, solder, heat shrink, and taped all connections) to setting the final station preset took a total of 1:38 (an hour and thirty eight minutes), I have installed many car stereos in my time, but by far this was the least painful I have ever experienced. The most difficult aspect was choosing from the 33 display colors..

So far so good!!! A little better then the last version of this radio (Had some problems with the older one) They resolved it by selling me the newer model cheap. I still have to contact Kenwood to try and get some restitution on it beings it was repaired once in warranty and went bad out of warranty... This was the 1st time in 40 yrs using Kenwood products I ever had any trouble with any of them.

Pros: Sounds great! Works pretty good and easy to program and change settings!

Cons: HD 2,3 and 4 (on some stations) cuts out or looses signal. The color changes you can make on the face plate won't change the color of the sta ID's (sta ID's stay blue) if you want to match the colors of your instrument panel...

Much more than I expected for $150. It has only been in the vehicle for 2 weeks, but I am very happy with the product so far.

Pros: Great value. Easy installation. Superior sound quality. Loaded with features.

Cons: Steering wheel controls did not work with unit; however, it could be a wiring issue that can be fixed.

the only real disappointment is that i cannot use my Sony MP3 player to control content when using the unit in USB mode. It seems that only an I-pod can be used.

I wasn't sure which stereo to pick but other Kenwood reviews sold me on it. I couldn't be happier. The sound quality is amazing and it is pretty too. I had no problems at all installing it into my 99 Cherokee. I'm sure the model specific instructions emailed by Crutchfield were great but the installation was so simple I didn't need them. The included wiring harness and face plate were perfect. As for price, Crutchfield was right on and with the included wiring harness and face plate a better value.

Pros: Great sound, awesome looks, easy installation.

Cons: None that I am aware of.

I bought this to put in my 03 Mustang GT so I could have IPod connectivity. I have the factory upgraded stereo with external amps. This stereo was able to hook to and tune the stereo to get some good quality sound from the factory setup.

Pros: Plenty of audio adjustments to fine tune the stereo to your car/liking.

Cons: The preset buttons can be hard to distinguish by feel, requiring you to take your eyes off the road at times.

This is a wonderful car stereo at a fantastic price. For under $150, you get so much. Play your iPod and control if from the dash or the included remote, while it charges at the same time, you'll never need to bring your CDs in the car again. Connect via USB and your music sounds great! You can also connect a music player without a USB via the AUX jack. The big improvement in sound is the iPod uses the stereo's digital-to-analog converter, as opposed to its own (which is cheap). The HD radio is excellent, too. I live in a fringe HD area, meaning sometimes those stations are picked up in HD, sometimes they're not. If listening to AM radio stations in HD, they smoothly transition back to regular AM if the signal cuts out (i.e., passing under a bridge, etc.). It can sometimes be difficult to scan through your iPod menus, but otherwise, it's definitely worth the money.

Head unit is a simple, effective way to get control of many of today's media devices and receive HD radio. Coming from an Alpine CDA9833 the Kenwood doesn't offer nearly as much sound control as I am used to, but it has the basics plus a High Pass Filter which was nice. Connected to my 06 Jeep Liberty Infinity 6 speaker system, it noticed the factory speakers played louder and hit harder. Though they do distort much more now than before with heavy bass. Time to swap in my Kappa Perfects I guess. The menu system of the Kenwood is a little annoying in my opinion, but is simple enough to use. Over all I am sure it will serve me well (Read: My wife as it is in "her" Jeep) for connecting Androids and iThings and Pandoras and the like.

Not too bad, especially for running out of an almost stock system it still improved my sound quality both through the radio as well as mp3 or cd. However, I personally found I rarely am using the HD radio, and would suggest considering a model without an HD tuner as well.

Pros: Good presets, easy to adjust as well including light color and brightness Will improve sound of stock system Iphone pandora compatibility

Cons: Have to click back through the entire submenu to return. The android app for kenwood doesn't seem to work
