My system has plenty of power. Who needs an amp?

You might think you don't need an amp because you have a 400-watt system in your car, or because your new stereo puts out 50 watts a channel. But those are peak wattage ratings, which may boil down to 15 or 20 watts per channel, using the more realistic RMS rating. An amp sends your speakers the power they need to deliver your music with clarity and impact, whether you're using factory speakers or high-performance components. And low-frequency reproduction requires lots of power, so an amp is an absolute must if you're adding a sub to your system.

i bought this amp and it messed up a set of 12" rockford fosgate p1's then i hooked it to a set of 12'' alpine type E's and they really pounded. i would recomend this amp to any one running subs under 400 Rms

Written By jon_jacob_jingelhimrsmith, c-ville, in on Monday, January 22, 2007

to the point .

the good: you can run a thumpin sub that would wake the dead or run some good ol 6'9's and this thing will let you set it up so that it will sound good i mean really good.

the bad: well..................

the ugly: some dont like the fact that your config buttons and levers are only get-to-able after you take off the front cover. me i like it that way. see that way when you throw all your junk'n the trunk to make room fer your hommies you dont bump the settings

Great amp for the money! Kenwood has really impressed me here with everything you could want out of an amp to pound your speakers! Definitly the under rated under dog of the big dogs!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

awsome amp, i completely re did my stereo system using this and other kenwood products.

Written By Greg, Hanson, MA on Monday, January 09, 2006

I bought this amp on ebay just because it was a cheap amp that matched the power rating of my kicker comps. I didnt know how good of a deal I got. My freind said that kenwood was good and he turned out to be right! I have these hooked up in a cherokee and I have the subwoofer ouptut turned all the way down on my sony deck because this amp is so loud! The only thing I wish is that the amp had a gain control so I could turn it down a little bit its so loud! I would highly highly reccomend this amp to anyone I believe the 150 x 2 is highly underrated.

This amp is a great amp at a great price.I bought this amp and didnt like kenwood but after i hooked it up and saw how well this amp puts out power i like it. I have it hooked up to 2 sony p5 12inch subwoofers. They sound great....

Awesome amp, good price

Written By Mike, Mount Pleasant, PA on Saturday, November 26, 2005

This amp is amazing. It pushes the perfect amount of power to both of my Alpine Type E 10's. The amp is rated at 920 watts peak, but i have heard that both rockford fosgate and kenwood rate their amps lower than they actually are. I have a capacitor along with this amp and they both fit perfectly on my box, which maximized a lot of room in my trunk compared to 12 inch subs. This amp is an amazing buy for the money and i would take it over any other amp any day. It has a nice look too, unlike the new kenwood amps.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am very surprised by this amp. For $200 I was expecting something kind of cheap to be honest but thankfully I read some other reviews on it. I have this amp pushing 2 Rockford Fosgate Punch Stage 1 12"s. I must say wow this amp really pushes them. It pushes my subs so well not only does my trunk, license plate, and tail lights rattle so do my quarterpanels. This is an amazing amp and worth well over $200 in my opinion.

Incredible amp

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This amp pounds! I thought for $200 that the other people that gave reviews about it were crazy but I gave it a chance and this amp totally lives up to the hype, I've pounded this with my Boston G2 subs at the limit for an hour and a half and the fuse didn't blow, the sound quality didn't go down and it didn't over heat. This is a great amp and for any one buying a sub should try this amp first because it is cheap and ROCKS!

Powerful and Durable

Written By Dazada, Robertsdale, AL on Saturday, September 17, 2005

You will not find a better amp for a better price anywhere else! I have this amp pushing two Kenwood KFC-W3009s and they push HARD. I tried bridging them at first to try to squeeze some more power out of my subs (which are rated at 400 watts RMS max), but the amp would overheat, and shut off. So I finally just wired them into stereo mode and turned the bass boost to 12 (which is halfway). It was almost impossible to tell the difference between bridged and stereo! Great job Kenwood!!!

Great amp

Written By Tim, Peck, MI on Monday, July 25, 2005

This amp is absolutely amazing. I bought it due to the reviews, and they don't lie. I made the mistake of buying a 4 ohm dvc sub (clicked wrong button, didn't realize it), so I can only run it at 8 ohms.. I'm trying to contact kenwood to see if the amp is 2 ohm stable or not while bridged, which I can't get a definate answer out of, But with the right subs, this amp will kick some nice bass out. I highly reccomend this amp.
I'm Searching for a mono amp to replace this one so i can run my alpine 1242D at 2 ohms, And i'm sure i'll be replacing it with a new kenwood mono amp.

At first I was skeptical, but now I believe!!!

Written By allmet33, Washington, DC on Wednesday, July 06, 2005

When I first saw it, I asked the guy about it and he said that it pushed a JL Audio W7. Of course I looked at him cock-eyed and said, "Yeah, right!"

Well...I was drawn by it's looks, the built in cooling fan and the 460 watts x 1 @ 4 ohms. Got it and realized I had to change my sub (old SPL dvc sub) since I only wanted to run one and picked up a PG Xenon 10" sub with dual 2 ohm voice coils.

Dropped the amp in the raised floor I created and hooked it up. Turned everything on and tweaked it out (which took some time to get it right). I have the input sensitivity at about 1, the lpf is at approx 120 Hz, and the bass boost is set on 12 and let me tell you...this amp pushes out amazing power!!!

I can see why others have praised this amp and it's definitely affirmed my belief that Kenwood can play with the big dawgs on the block.

One kicking amp

Written By JRonq, Tucson, AZ on Saturday, May 28, 2005

This amp is awesome! I have it powering 2 Rockford Fosgate Punches Stage 2, which, at almost half power, makes these subs hit with some chest-thumping bass in my 05 Dodge Ram Quad Cab. Good job Kenwood! This is one happy customer!

Great Amp.

Written By Neal, Suffolk, VA on Saturday, April 09, 2005

I must say, Kenwood has re-affirmed my faith in affordable power.
I bought this amp because the same wattage MTX was well over my price range. Almost double the price of this one. I was told kenwood has been working hard to catch up with companies like MTX (which is all i have in all three of my cars) and I would be suprised with the value of this amp.
Still, I was skeptical. Are they rating the RMS as industry standard, or are they using "their own rating system?" Some companies will do anything to sell their inferior products.
The now Japanese-Chinese Rockford-Fosgate lost all my respect when all their good engineers went to MTX. I needed alot more power to drive my new 1000 watt Infinity sub, and I am absolutely amazed at how clean this amp sounds and how effortlessly it hits that speaker.
I have really thought of Kenwood as slightly higher than low end audio for many years, because the Kenwood products I had purchased then were cheap and didnt last long.
My opinion has changed in a big way. This is probably the best value for the money there is right now, and I am not aware of a single company that has a cooling fan on an amp under $200 like this one.

Very nice job, Kenwood. Keep it up.

Inputs and Outputs
Additional Specifications

Line Level Inputs: The RCA type line-level inputs have a gain (Input Sensitivity) control. The Input Sensitivity control will accept an input signal of 200mV to 5.0 Volts.

Speaker Level Input: The KAC-7202 comes with a speaker level input harness. Once you splice the speaker wires from the receiver to the harness, you have plug-in convenience to the amplifier. This feature makes it easier to add an amplifier to a factory radio or to a receiver with no preamp outputs. The maximum power output from the source receiver can be no more than 40 watts.

Line Level Output: The amplifier has a line level output for feeding a second amplifier. The output is the same signal fed to the input.

Crossovers: The KAC-7202 has built-in high pass and low pass crossovers. The high pass crossover's slope is 12 dB/octave and is continuously variable from 50Hz to 200Hz. The low pass crossover's slope is 24 dB/octave and is also continuously variable from 50Hz to 200Hz.

Bass Boost: The bass boost is adjustable from 0-18dB at 40Hz.

Fan: There is a fan on top of the amp to help dissipate heat and ensure cool, reliable operation.

Stereo/Mono Operation: If the KAC-7202 is to be bridged, the operation mode switch on the top of the amp is set to mono. When switched to Mono, the signal from the left channel input only is used.

Protection circuitry: The amplifier features protection circuits that will turn the amp off in case of the following events:

  • Speaker output contacts ground
  • Speaker wire short-circuits
  • Unit malfunctions and DC is sent to speaker output
  • Internal temperature is too high
  • Loss of ground of head unit or amp

Additional Specifications

CEA-2006 Compliant: CEA-2006 is a new system of testing & measurement methods for mobile audio amplifiers. This voluntary standard advocates a uniform method for determining an amplifier's RMS power output and signal-to-noise ratio. The criteria for measuring power uses a DC input voltage of 14.4 volts and the RMS power output is measured into a 4-ohm load, with 1% or less Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) plus noise, and at a frequency range (for full range amplifiers) of 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. Signal-to-Noise ratio is measured in weighted absolute decibels (dBA) at a reference of 1 watt into 4 ohms. CEA-2006 allows consumers to compare car amplifiers and receivers on an equal basis.

Power: Using the CEA-2006 guidelines listed above, the power output of the KAC-7202 is 150 watts RMS x 2 channels.

Kenwood also lists the following specifications:

  • Power output at 2 ohms: 230 watts x 2 (1 kHz, 0.8% THD)
  • Power output at 4 ohms, bridged: 460 watts x 1 (1 kHz, 0.8% THD)
  • Input impedance: 10k ohms
  • Operating voltage: 14.4 V (11-16V allowable)
  • Current consumption: 40A
