CEA-2006 Compliant: CEA-2006 is a system of testing and measurement for mobile audio amplifiers. This voluntary standard advocates a uniform method for measuring an amplifier's RMS power output and signal-to-noise ratio. The criteria for measuring power uses a DC input voltage of 14.4 volts and the RMS power output is measured into a 4Ω load, with 1% or less Total Harmonic Distortion plus noise (THD+N), and over a frequency range of 20 Hz to 20 kHz (for full range amplifiers). Signal-to-Noise ratio is measured in weighted absolute decibels (dBA) at a reference of 1 watt into 4Ω. CEA-2006 standards allow consumers to compare car amplifiers and receivers under the same conditions (apples to apples). Using CEA-2006 criteria, the Kenwood KAC-9106D is rated at 500 watts RMS x 1 channel with a 76 dBA signal to noise ratio. The signal to noise ratio at the rated power output (not CEA-2006 conditions) is 100 dB.

2-Ohm Stable: The amplifier can also support a 2-ohm load; the 2-ohm power output is 1,000 watts RMS x 1 channel.

Cast Aluminum Heat Sink: The KAC-9106D utilizes a cast aluminum heat sink design to ensure the amplifier stays cool.

Protection circuitry: The amplifier features protection circuits that will turn the amp off in case of the following events:

  • speaker wire short-circuits
  • speaker output contacts ground
  • unit malfunctions and DC is sent to speaker output
  • the amp overheats

Power Indicator: When the amplifier is turned on the Power indicator (on top of the amp) lights up. This indicator turns off with the amplifier, and will turn off if the amplifier goes into protect mode.

Auto Turn-on: When using a speaker level input, the amp will turn on automatically when it senses the input signal.

Controls

Gain: To accommodate the varying range of signal levels from today's factory and aftermarket radios, the KAC-9106D features an adjustable gain control; 0.2-5.0 volts line level (RCA) and 4.0-12.0 volts speaker level.

Crossover: The built-in 24 dB/octave low-pass filter has a continuously variable crossover point; 50Hz to 200Hz. Because this is a subwoofer amp, the crossover is always engaged.

Infrasonic Filter: The 24 dB/octave Infrasonic Filter removes ultra-low frequencies that cannot be reproduced by most subwoofers. These frequencies do not become sound, but unnecessary oscillations which affect sound by causing distortion. These frequencies also waste amplifier power and can cause damage to speakers. The filter's crossover point is continuously variable from 20 Hz to 50 Hz.

Bass Boost: The bass boost is adjustable from 0-18dB at 40Hz.

Connections

Power Connections: The power and ground connections are 0.55" wide screw terminals. The remote turn-on screw terminal is 0.335" wide. A Phillips-head or flat blade screw driver (not supplied) is required to tighten/loosen the terminals. Spade connectors are recommended. The manual lists a minimum of 10 gauge wire for power and ground, but given the 120 amp fuse value and the current consumption specification of 65 amps, we recommend a 4 gauge wiring kit.

Speaker Outputs: There are two pair of 0.335" wide screw terminal speaker outputs; they are internally wired in parallel, making it easy to connect two subwoofers. A Phillips-head or flat blade screw driver (not supplied) is required to tighten/loosen the terminals. Spade connectors are also recommended for the speaker wires.

Line Level Input: The line input is a pair of stereo RCA jacks.

Line Level Output: The amplifier has a pair of RCA line level outputs for feeding another amplifier; it is the same signal that is input through the RCA line inputs. The amplifier's crossovers have no effect on the line level output signal.

Speaker Level Input: A wiring harness is included for the speaker level input.

Fuses: The amplifier uses three 40-amp ATO blade-type fuses.

Q
Do amplifier have thermal cooling system automatic ?
george w.  May 18, 2023
1 answer
A
All amplifiers have some means of dissipating heat, though different models achieve this differently. The KAC-9106D uses a simple system of heat sinks and vents for heat dissipation.

Q
I have a Kenwood KAC-9106D..Can I use a 5 gauge amp kit to set it up?
strangerxv  Feb 18, 2023
1 answer
A
Greetings, and thank you for your question. The specifications of the amp are are measured at 14.4 volts. Kenwood recommends using a 4 gauge power and ground wire. Using a 5 gauge could result in a lower voltage at the amp. The amplifier would still work, but you might not be getting the same advertised wattage.

Q
Need help finding bass knob for this amp?
sabastian  Dec 28, 2018
1 answer
A
Hi Sabastian. We don't carry a Kenwood remote specific to that amp. My best solution would be a universal level control like this Rockford Fosgate that can go in-line with the RCA input and give you control over the signal: https://bit.ly/2GZYkFE If you have questions about that setup or want to put together a complete cart you can get connected with one of our Product Advisors here: https://bit.ly/2QNxGQB --Cosmo

Q
Why is there 2 speaker out puts if this is a mono speaker and how would I wire it to 2 speakers one output to each or split 1 output?
samuel  Jul 11, 2017
1 answer
A
The two output carry the same signal. Just already split so you don't need to split it yourself.

Q
I want to power an alpine type r 12 in 2ohms to give the sub 1000 watts rms, so my question is, with the max rms of that sub being 1000 rms should I go with this amp or get a smaller one to be on the safe side to keep from blowing the sub?
charles  Nov 22, 2016

A
No, you should be fine with that setup.
justin  Nov 22, 2016

I have this powering a kicker 15" 1000 watt sub. It pairs very nicely for me. I wouldn't worry about blowing the speaker, you will hear distortion before the sub goes which is much better than try8by to overdrive an underpowered amp
brandon  Nov 22, 2016
Q
I have a rockford p3d2-15, my question is can the kenwood kac-9106d amp handle a 1 ohm load or would I be better off to wire the sub at 4 ohms and bridge the amp?
phillip  Oct 29, 2016
1 answer
A
The Kenwood KAC-9106D amplifier is only stable down to a 2-ohm load. In order to power your Rockford P3D2-15 subwoofer, you'd want to wire the sub's dual voice coils in series wiring to show the amp a 4-ohm load. If you would like to discuss further, feel free to contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. I hope that helps!

Q
Is this amp overkill for one 12" 1200 watt sub? I just want an amp to power the sub only
belinda  Jan 09, 2016
2 answers
A
No, I do not believe so based on the following. A larger amp running at 50% or so capacity, will more than likely run cooler and draw somewhat less power demand than an amp that needs to run at or near full capacity to get the same volume etc. Not an electrical engineer but it only makes sense to me. It's been a great amp and have no problems so far. We did run "all" wires at almost double the recommended size just to reduce any chance of under capacity so maybe that has helped as well.
jeff  Jan 12, 2016
A
No , this amp is just right for your needs , will push your sub to its full potential
