Our take on the Kenwood KFC-1664S

by John Pollard
Kenwood

Why replace your car's original speakers?

The speakers that originally came in your car were made from inexpensive materials, designed to create acceptable sound at the lowest possible cost to the manufacturer. If you love music, you deserve better. Name-brand aftermarket speakers deliver fuller, richer sound with considerably more detail and nuance, and they're capable of playing louder and cleaner than factory speakers. Connect new speakers to your factory radio and you'll get the best possible sound from your dealer-equipped system. Pair them up with a new car stereo for a level of enjoyment that can rival a high-fidelity home audio experience.

If you've been suffering with tired out speakers, Kenwood's Sport Series speakers are a cost-effective way to liven up the sound in your car. The KFC-1664S 3-way 6-1/2" speakers use multiple speaker elements to bring new clarity and enhanced performance to your car audio system.

Each speaker features a polypropylene woofer with a treated cloth surround that delivers full bass while standing up to the heat and humidity in your car. A balanced-dome midrange driver allows vocals and instruments to be heard more distinctly, while the ceramic tweeter supplies the musical details that make your music more exciting. The built-in crossover sends the appropriate frequencies to each element, so you'll hear clean, balanced performance. Grilles are included.

Features

Woofers: The woofer cones are constructed from injection-molded polypropylene. This process of cone molding assures a uniform cone thickness for superior linearity and clarity. The cones are lightweight and rigid for low distortion and good bass response. Each woofer uses a treated cloth surround.

Tweeters: Each speaker has a 1-3/8" PEI balanced dome tweeter. A semi-dome tweeter has a dome placed inside a cone. Balanced dome tweeters are semi-dome tweeters with equal reproduction area given the cone and dome portions of the tweeter.

Flat Super-Tweeters: The speaker also utilizes a 1/2" ceramic, flat super-tweeter for added high frequency reproduction.

Mounting: The speakers can be mounted in three-hole and four-hole 6-1/2 applications. They can also be easily mounted in 6-3/4 applications, but because the extra screw holes create an air leak in the larger opening, a speaker baffle must be used.

Versatile, and good-sounding

Written by Matt Freeman, Staff Writer - Creative, on 10/10/2013 2:45:00 PM

Not too long ago, we helped a teen install his very first car stereo system. In his doors and his rear deck, he installed two pairs of these 6-1/2" Kenwood speakers. And I have say, after helping with the installation and listening to them play, I highly recommend them to anyone looking for an inexpensive and quick upgrade. The sound was solid. Good high notes without being crispy, and reasonably solid bass. A huge step up from old factory speakers, no question. Looking at the specs, you'll see they're very efficient, which I can attest translates into pretty good volume levels. What I really was impressed by, though, was how friendly they were when it came to the installation. They're remarkably shallow (only a 1-3/4" mounting depth), which means they'll fit in a lot of vehicles. In our case, the 1993 Honda Accord we were working on has factory speaker cups that we assumed we'd have to modify with a hacksaw. Imagine our delight when these speakers dropped right in, saving us tons of time and effort.

Way Better than stock

Written By Brad, North Little Rock, AR on Friday, January 31, 2014

Bought these to replace door speakers in my wifes 2001 Mazda Protege. They are a nice upgrade from the factory set. Paired them with a pair of Kenwood Excelon KFC-X693 6x9's in the rear deck and a Kenwood Excelon KDC-X997 headunit. As many reviews ive seen about the bass being bad they are correct but they knew that when they bought these they are 6.5" not 15" subs. Good clean mids and highs minor distortion at higher volume but i do not intend to blast my stereo all day.
Pros:
Very cheap and easy to install, clean clear sound quality at moderate volume (not full volume), voices and instrumentals very crisp.
Cons:
Very little bass but was expected 6x9's in rear deck more than compensated for it. After all they are 6.5" not 15" subs

I installed these in the front doors of my sister's 2007 Jeep Compass and they sounded really big. They really fill the front cabin with sound and are light years better than the stock speakers. Used an adapter supplied by Crutchfield for free(!) and had no problems with installation. Outstanding speakers!

Great sound, easy installation

They sound good.. I installed thess in the front doors of my 97 ford F350. I can definitely tell the difference between these and the $80 Kenwoods I have in the rear, I had to use my x-over in my head unit to turn the bass way down on these to get them to sound clear at the same volume as the rears.. As expected, because these were almost half the price. I guess the $80 6.5" Kenwoods have a tweeter that is too tall to fit in my door panel. Or else I would have spent the extra 30 bucks to get the better ones. Still a good speaker.
Pros:
Sound good, Look good, Good quality

Clean sound

Written By Jim M, Casper, WY on Friday, January 03, 2014
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This set of speakers has great clarity! After using the convenient fit guide to find what I needed to replace in my son's car I ordered a pair for the rear deck. I pulled the dry rotted factory speakers out and replaced them with ease thanks to the included wiring adapters. Not comparing these to the obviously worthless factory speakers, but to other quality speakers I would say they have impressive upper range clarity. The size limits the audible low frequency response. If you have a sub or plan to add one these will be a great match for the high pass filter!
Pros:
price, quality, clean sound
Cons:
bass reproduction, but hey they aren't subwoofers so I am not really holding this against them.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I called on the phone asking for kenwood 3 way speakers and the sales women sold me this. At this point now I wish she offered different speakers, or asked if I wanted better base or something that can handle it when I crank my stereo. But over all on low to med sound they work great, but at high sounds they get distorted. Easy to install with bracket I just had to cut the mounting tabs off and drill and used self tapping screws to hold the brackets on, the wiring they have was a perfect match, I like Crutchfield but I recommend they ask questions like " is the 100 % what you want or can I help you pick out something that might fit your needs better?" If she did, I'd be more happy, but I did ask for kenwood 3 way. Looking now they do offer a better set of kenwood 3way. But over all I may send these to the rear, and get a better set for the front. I'll use crutchfirld because I do like them.
Pros:
Good for low to med sounds
Cons:
If you crank it, they get distorted.

sound quality seems pretty good. For the price you cant go wrong. Maybe if you are building some competition sound quality car, money wouldnt be an object and you could look at some other set. But for most of us on a budget and just want something to work and sound good, these are the way to go.

I bought these speakers with some money I had received or my birthday. Not only were the speakers amazingly easy to install, but the components that were sent to me along with the speakers allowed for the ease of the installation. Easy instructions and no complaints. The speakers sound amazing even for still being hooked up to the stock radio. My stock subwoofer is blown out so it doesn't do the speakers justice, but I plan on disconnecting it this weekend to get a real taste of just the speakers by themselves. Great job Kenwood.

Crisp and clear, and amazing sound. Easy installation.

reasonably good but not much bass

Written By Steve, Huntsville, AL on Wednesday, October 09, 2013

They sound pretty decent overall, but are short on bass. I was expecting more, based on the 35-22kHz frequency response specs. No amount of playing with the EQ settings on my Kenwood BT755HD head unit could compensate to my satisfaction and at high volume levels the cones sounded like they were reaching the limit of their travel without really making any discernible bass, so I ended up adding an Kicker 11HS8 compact powered subwoofer to my system. That made a very big improvement. I am not the kind of person that strives to rattle the windows of the car sitting next to me at the stoplight, but I do like all the frequencies to be present in my music. Especially the low ones.

In retrospect, it was probably too much to expect much bass out of a 6.5 inch speaker, and I should have planned on needing a subwoofer. And knowing that, maybe I should have gone ahead and kicked it up one more notch to a set of "component" speakers.
Pros:
decent sound for the price installation was easy with the supplied hardware
Cons:
weak bass response

Great replacement speakers

Written By Dave, North Shore, MA on Tuesday, October 08, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently installed these speakers as a replacement for the factory door speakers in my 2001 Chevy Astro cargo van. Although this vehicle is only a work van, I'm a music fanatic and being on the road for hours on end meant I had to do something about the awful, flat, paper-flapping sound of the original worn-out speakers. I added an Infinity Basslink a while back to add some low end, (this is still an empty metal van so I wasn't looking for perfect acoustics- just better sound,) but that nice clean bass quickly put an emphasis on the "blah" sound of the full range coming from two door speakers. With these Kenwood speakers installed, I now have a MUCH cleaner and clearer music experience while on the go, with a well balanced range of highs, mids, and lows. The speakers produce plenty of volume while being fed from my Kenwood head unit, (35 watt output) and with the speaker harness adapters provided by Crutchfield, installation was a snap. Very happy with this product!
Pros:
Great sound, sleek look, easy install.

Great stock replacements

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall very impressed with the sound quality.
Pros:
Easy install. Cruchfield provides all the templates and speaker housings for free, more than you need actually. I have a Chevy 2500 crew cab Silverado and the rear mounts weren't even needed, just a quick swap. Speaker connectors are provided so no splicing. Make sure to buy the conversion wiring harness and it's more than half the cost of what Best Buy was going to charge.
Cons:
The free front mounting plates needed some cutting of tabs, so get your small saw ready. I used a hand miter saw, otherwise was easy replacement.

Written By MarkR, Harvey's Lake, PA on Tuesday, September 17, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

They are good speakers, but it's difficult to get the EQ on the radio balanced just right. I like to drive with all my windows down and I kept blowing the factory speakers, so I got these. They are good, loud and clear, but there's a little rattle from the bass. I just got them, so I'm sure I'll be able to adjust it, but so far that is the only complaint I have.

Overall Decent for a 2013 Honda Accord

Written By Bryan M, Chicago, IL on Sunday, September 15, 2013
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After the break in period of a few days, these speakers sounded very good. Although they are not as good as I had hoped, that is likely due to the shortcomings of the OEM stereo in my 2013 Honda Accord LX. I get a very good bass response and the higher ranges seem to be more clear than the OEM speakers as well. The lower power requirements of these speakers seem to be a better match for the OEM stereo than the 5.25 inch Rockford Fosgates I had to return. Overall, I am happy with them.

Regarding installation on the Accord, as Crutchfield indicates, an adapter bracket is required. The stock speakers are around 6.5 inch so if you own an Accord, do not buy 5.25 inch speakers as they will require a plastic ring to cover the open area between the speaker edge and the adapter bracket. Just buy a bigger speaker as you'll get better bass from the larger woofer. Also, the screws that come with the speakers will not work on the Accord. I used 1/8 inch diameter, 3/4 inch long bolt and nut. This required that I drill larger holes in the adapter bracket (the screws that come with the speakers also will require you drill the holes bigger). Also, pay attention to the adapter wire Crutchfield provides. The included instructions had the positive (+) and negative connections backwards. Lastly, at the time of this review, CF did not have a Master sheet for the 2013 but provided the 2012 to me and separate photos for the 2013. The model years are somewhat different.
Pros:
Good sound for the money
Cons:
Highs could be clearer

worst speakers ever

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I only gave one star because thats the lowest there is. If there were negative numbers I would give these speakers that rating they are terible. Crutchfield should stop selling these speakers, stock speakers are better. Kenwood should be ashamed selling these and putting there name on them. Take my word for it do not buy these
Pros:
Not a thing
Cons:
they cost way to much for what they are , rattle and pop with almost no volume put to them

Great sound and size.

Great speakers, Mids and highs are good as expected but if you're looking for bass look elsewhere. This is not a problem since I have 2 12's in my car so they were just what I expected. I'd definitely buy them again.
Pros:
Highs, Mids, Ease of installation of course, Terrific price
Cons:
Not for Bass

Easy to navigate website, prompt shipping, all the parts were there, wiring adapters correct, and the speakers sound great in my Toyota. These folks really cared about my business. Wouldn't bother with other vendors. Just shop Crutchfield!
Pros:
The way online shopping is supposed to be. Good product, great service, timely delivery and even detailed instructions on how to properly remove trim pieces for my specific car.
Cons:
Speaker adapter plates needed minor trimming to fit properly. Hard to call that a con though.

The Speakers are great. They work good in high volume and don't distort. They have ok bass but they don't drown out the treble either. The Crutchfield Team always takes care of me and gives me everything that I need and they didn't disappoint.
Pros:
Te price and don't distort at high volumes.
Cons:

Theses speakers sound clear & good, BUT flat.. They have no bass what so ever... I do know that a 6.5 speaker is not going to put out much... But I wanted something more.. I ordered some Sound Ordance (SO) for the same price & installed them and WOW what a difference... So needless to say these was sent back for a fast and easy refund.. Love You Guys @ Crutchfield......
