It's amazing how far your dollar goes these days when it comes to buying a new car stereo. Kenwood's KDC-152 CD receiver lives at the budget end of the their lineup, but you'll be pleasantly surprised at the performance and features it offers.

Start with a firm foundation of power
The typical factory radio is woefully underpowered, as you can tell by the muddy and indistinct sound you hear when you get up to highway speeds. This Kenwood's built-in amplifier delivers impressive power, and you'll notice a big bump in performance right away, whether you're using your factory speakers or some aftermarket models.

More media options
Chances are, you've got an an iPod® or some type of portable player. You and your friends can plug into the receiver's handy front-panel minijack input and listen to your favorite tunes while you drive. If you're spinning CDs, you'll enjoy superior sound quality from your discs — soundstaging and stereo separation are crisp and clean. And you can burn the music on your computer onto a disc and hit the road — the KDC-152 plays discs loaded with MP3 and WMA files, so you can enjoy long road trips without having to swap out discs.

Sound adjustments
Forget about the limited tone controls you'll find on a factory radio. The KDC-152 gives you a 3-band EQ and a bass boost, along with a Supreme Setting feature to improve the sound of MP3 files. And you can store a different EQ curve for each source — one for the radio, one for the aux input, and one for CDs.

Even cooler, if you add a powered sub to your system, you can turn it up and down with the receiver's sub level control, a great feature if you listen to a wide variety of music. And, speaking of control, Kenwood includes a wireless remote for your convenience.

Easy to use. I bought it for my dad who can't see well and it's into all the bells and whistles. He doesn't have use his reading glasses to change stations lol

Great quality for the money, there are plenty of more expensive stereos available with lots of bells and whistles that I don't need and only would add to the price. I purchased this to replace a factory radio and am well pleased!

Pros: Price ease of instillation quality

Cons: Scan button could work better

Fairly easy installation once you get the correct wires. I don't use the remote but it works just fine in the driver seat. Like the color, wish it came in blue for the same price though

Pros: Clear, easy to use, looks nice, love the auxiliary option

Cons: Not really a con but I wish the lighting was blue

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It was easy enough to put in, but something I have never done before. After spilling a cup of coffee on my stock radio, it would no longer work with cassettes, as they would get stuck (this culminated when I tried to remove the cassette one time, and broke the cord, leaving the cassette in the player). A co-worker told me about crutchfield.com and it's pricing, and I haven't looked back.

Pros: -Excellent fit -Sound quality is amazing for stock system (aside from the reciever). -Aux cable compatibility. -Didnt really have to move anything around in my 1997 GMC Sierra

Cons: -None at the moment really, it has 110% done what I expected of it.

Great bang for the buck. Decent power. Good sound. I bought this for an old car when the CD player died. I didn't need great sound or many features. Only a few minor complaints. When you take the CD out, the receiver does not turn on. You have to press a button a few times. Not good when you are driving. This unit also comes with a remote. But why?

    Pros: Value

Cons: Have to press too many buttons for some features

I just wanted to replace factory cassette deck in my 93 Ford Ranger with a CD Player. Have no use for the fancy features such as Bluetooth, ect. The deck fit perfect in the dash. I have installed a few decks and this was easy. The Kenwood unit had the power I wanted and simple controls. I love it.

    Pros: Cheap price.

Das Blinking Lights | Poor Viewing Angle

dad from Berkeley, CA on 9/4/2014

There are three reasons this a was a poor match for me: 1) The display does not work if viewed from above (e.g. if your radio is relatively low in the dash, as is mine). 2) The designers went out of their way to maximize flashing lights. Every action causes a flourish of blinking lights that's quite distracting. Every display flashes or blinks in some way. 3) The "off" button is a multi function button: so you can't just jam the button to turn the thing off. You have to actually look at the display and get it into the right mode. Ugh.

    Pros: Cheap

    Cons: Cheap

Never had a CD player in my 91 miata it came with a Cassette player the CD player sounds great when I hooked it up with Kenwood 3 way speakers .

Pros: Sounds ten times better than what came with the car.

Cons: Only 2 places to put speakers on a miata unless you won't them in your head rest which I don't like an wont to keep the 25 year old car as stock as much as possible.

Cons: Nothing really :) this radio is really good

    Big Mistake

Rob W from Saint Petersburg, Fl on 8/13/2014

Big Mistake, I have had nothing but problems with this radio. it was replace 2 times with factory refurbished( which is what I bought)then out of courtesy, they gave me a brand new one, and Crutchfield did not document as "new" and they basically said I lied to them. in Florida, it gets hot and this radio does not like the heat at all, every time I select station program 2, it lights up tuner I try and play cds, I have to wait until my car cools down so I can use the skips of fast forward buttons. some times it randomly shuts of after being on for 30 plus minutes, the lights come on and off randomly i will never buy anything from Crutchfield again

Pros: Looks good until the letters wear off in about 6 months

Cons: Radio doesn't like Florida Heat Can't change colors (I knew this before I bought it though) No USB Buttons are a bit cramped together and trying to press the return button from the menu is quite a pain.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I didn't buy this for it's "Coolness Factor" - I'm an old man with an old car & wanted a radio that could play CD's & other devices. This radio does that & more. But the support I got from Crutchfield is what made the project a success. I was intimidated by the apparent complexity of the wiring harness that bypassed the amplifier on my 1998 Ford Windstar. My calls to Crutchfield support were answered quickly & I got the answers I needed & the encouragement I hoped for. The installation went smoothly & I couldn't be more pleased. By the way, the radio fits perfectly in the dash & looks & sounds great.

Pros: Good price Easy installation Good looks Good sound Great service & support

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this inexpensive unit with 2 speakers for less than 100 dollars. Really quite a value considering what you get considering the hardware and Crutchfield support which is quite superior. I intended to use this in a Chevy pickup but later decided to install it in my boat. This unit really puts out great sound and gets good reception with a cheap antenna I bought at the auto parts store and tossed up in the boats overhead wire track.. So far quite happy with my latest Crutchfield purchase. I went middle of the road on Coolness Factor because I am so square I am not qualified to rate coolness its best left to others.

Pros: Low price Powerful Amplifier The remote is real nice, First one I ever got with a car radio. .No going below to mess with the radio. Attractive package Features

Cons: No drawbacks when considering price and my purpose.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was going to purchase a Pioneer deck that had way more bells and whistles until I saw the deal they had on this Kenwood. When combined with the 6.5" speakers it was a steal with free 3 day shipping. This saved me $$ and who needs a deck with color changing display anyway! I have owned Kenwoods in the past and have been pleased with them. My Porsche 928 now has a great looking and sounding system and I don't hear my brakes squeaking anymore. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

i purchased this radio and for the money I got a lot. The controls and menus were intuitive, sound quality was above average for such an affordable radio though I wish it came with a few more sound adjustment options. The build quality is excellent. It doesn't feel cheap and looks okay in the dash. I rate it a 5 in comparison to other radios in the same price range.

Pros: Affordable, decent sound quality, easy to use and the front aux input is very convenient.

Cons: Not enough sound adjustment options and the removable face plate makes the radio look dated.

Once I received and installed my new front door speakers I know what a nice receiver / cd player this is. Sounds marvelous and seems to have all the power I will need. Some controls are not that easy to figure out and still have to refer to the manual once in a while. Should have it down soon and not a huge deal. So much better than factory sound.

Pros: Easy to install and sounds great.

Cons: Some controls could be easier to interpret.

back in the day a deck with all these features plus a remote was top of the line. now it's the bottom. funny, that. but don't be fooled. it's a solid performer. install couldn't have been easier. $ for $ of the cd units at this price point this one is the best. sound is clear and crisp. not a lot of distortion at louder volumes as is common with a lot of these low end head units.

Pros: cheap in price but not in quality easy to install sound quality is above average.

Cons: faceplate is a bit awkward to engage. but easy to remove.

Great sounding radio. Easy installation. Good price. The only thing I don't like is I cannot make the radio display the time (clock). Maybe I missed it in the manual, but so far, I get to see the track info and the time on the track. It is a bit strange since I can set the time.

This unit was replacing a 12 year old OEM in my Toyota. With the mounting kits and wiring I was able to complete the project in about one hour. The sound is so much better, was able to integrate with my Sirius radio and now can play my CD's in the car. I also have used my Iphone to play directly to the system. All sound great, now I may just go ahead and upgrade the speakers to get an even better sounding system... No problems or hiccups works great and looks good in the car as well.

Pros: Easy of install, fairly intuitive controls, great remote and great sound.

Cons: Nothing that would make me have wished for something different.

Nice unit for the price. All of my speakers are running off of an external amp so I can't attest to the power of this headunits internal amp. Even after reading and reviewing the owners manual, the menu is still a pain to get thru. My system sounds good and I sure didn't spend a lot of money on it so I don't regret my purchase that is for sure!! The Front Aux is a really nice feature and one on the reasons why I bought this amp. If you don't have any of the fancy electronic communication gizmos (like me), this is all you will ever need.

    1986 Mercedes-Benz 420SEL
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this Kenwood unit in a 1986 420SEL, as the original radio had quit and was beyond repair. I ordered from Crutchfield because they included instructions and adaptor harnesses and I did not want to cut the factory harness in my car. The radio was fairly straightforward to install adn it looks neat and good once in position. The harnesses had the correct plug for the factory wiring and the speakers. The instructions could have been clearer on a couple of points: for example, I had to remove the two springs which hold the factory Becker radio in place, as the Kenwood does not have the slots on the bottom of the case for the springs to snap into, and I could not reinstall the ashtray without these springs being in place, so I removed them (easy). The instructions also did not specify how to connect to the power antenna to allow the radio to operate it. The sound of the radio is good, and it works great with the OEM speakers and fader. It satisfies me, but an autiophile would probably want all the bells and whistles. The controls are not particularly intuitive, so I am still studying the manual and figuring out how to operate it. The Kenwood manual is OK but seems to keep some information to itself.

Pros: Excellent value for the price! It looks good adn makes a neat installation Included harnesses and instructions that other retailers et al do not have, which is why I bought from Crutchfield.

Cons: Instructions need more information; you are almost there. Remember that to me this is the major value Crutchfield adds, so get it right, it will win you cuystomers. Controls on the radio are not intuitive, but you will be able to get used to it with a little practice.

I replaced the original radio with a Sony about two years ago and it stopped reading CD's. That Sony was hard to operate with big fingers, driving or not and I found it difficult to make settings. I was glad to replace it with the Kenwood, which is easy to operate with un-nimble fingers or with the remote and is very easy to set. The sound is much better than the Sony. I'd be totally happy if only I could figure out how to dim the display when driving at night--likely there's no way to do that.

    Woke up my subwoofer

Goochi G from Las Vegas, NV on 8/28/2012

I had a head-unit without subwoofer preout but with GPS touch screen.CD player broke so had to replace it. Since I don't need the GPS (too low on the dashboard) and had a better separate GPS I opt for this one because I heard good things about Kenwood. Let me tell you it woke up my Kicker CVX 12". And I got to separate the real low base away from the rest of my speakers and just into the sub. So squeacky clean! I don't have to raise up the volume just to hear and feel my awesome subwoofer. Can't rate quality since this is my first Kenwood and I just have it for a week.

Pros: So easy to use. So nice looking inside my two tone black-red interior. One din so I got extra pocket to place small things.

Cons: This is the base version so no bluetooth or HD radio which I don't need anyway. I only listen to CDs. Tiny buttons but that's what the remote is for.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ive owned a few aftermarket head units over the years, none of them have actually improved the sound. Especially in this price range. I installed in in my 99 Cherokee which had a rather worn jvc unit in it. It was like taking a blanket off my otherwise stock system. Maybe this is due to the 22w RMS? My only complaint on the sound is I cant turn it past 30 and it goes to 50 my speakers simply cant handl,e the output. Guess its time for new speakers! Another thing I would like to note is this unit actually has menus! No odd ball button configuration to set your clock. This is a huge relief because I do a lot of stuff to my jeep and have to disconnect the battery and resetting the clock is usually a pain. If i had to dig for an issue i have with this unit it would be the absence of the attenuation button on the faceplate. Its on the remote but not the faceplate. And eventually ill lose the remote. Otherwise highly recpmend this stereo to anyone.

Text Scroll: The KDC-152 will display CD text or Audio file text. You can set the text scrolling feature to three different modes (Auto, Once, or Off) to scroll longer titles across the screen.

Music Search: The Kenwood AM/FM CD receiver features a Music Search feature which allows you to scroll through and select your MP3/WMA music folders and files, as well as scroll through your audio CD's music tracks using the head unit's rotary knob.

Direct Music Search: The supplied IR wireless remote control (RC-405) allows you to search for music directly by entering the track number.

Playback Modes: The Kenwood KDC-152 features the following Repeat, Random, and Scan playback modes.

    • Repeat Play: Track, File, or Folder
    • Random Play: Disc or Folder
    • Scan Play: Track or File (plays the first 10-seconds of each music track on a disc or music file in a folder)

Last Position Memory: If the unit is shut off or switched to the tuner mode while a CD is playing, the next time CD is selected as the source, playback will resume from the point where it left off.

CD Read: This function sets the method for reading a CD disc. You can choose between two modes.

    • CD1: Automatically distinguishes between audio file disc and music CD when playing a CD or CD-R/RW disc.
    • CD2: When unable to play a special formatted CD, set this function to CD2 to force playing. Some music CD  discs may be unplayable even when set to this mode.

Off Insert/Eject: A CD disc can be inserted or ejected with the power off. When a disc is inserted with the power off, the unit will automatically power up and begin playback.

Auto Reload: If the ejected disc is not removed within 15 seconds, the disc is automatically inserted again into the loading slot to protect it from dust.

    Radio Functions

AM/FM Tuner: The Kenwood KDC-152 features a built-in AM/FM tuner. You can choose one of three tuning modes: Auto 1 (seek tuning), Auto 2 (cycles through and tunes the selected band's preset stations only with each button press), or Manual.

Tuner Presets: The KDC-152's tuner features 3 FM banks (1, 2, 3) and 1 AM bank for storing presets. The Kenwood KDC-152 offers two preset modes.

    • Normal: You can store 6 presets for each AM/FM bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets (total of 24).
    • Mix: A total of 6 preset stations can be assigned to the head unit's 6 preset buttons, regardless of AM/FM band. This lets you recall a preset station without switching between bands.

Auto Memory Tuning: Not only does the CD receiver's tuner allow you manually enter your desired presets you can choose to have the unit automatically put stations with good reception in the memory banks automatically; this is a handy feature when traveling.

Mono Mode: The Mono mode improves the radio's FM reception, but the stereo effect may be lost.

    Aux Connection

Aux In: The unit is equipped with a front panel 3.5mm minijack auxiliary input that can be used to input audio from a portable audio source such as an MP3 player. The Aux input must be turned on to function. The unit has 3 auxiliary input modes.

    • On1: Outputs the sound of the external unit connected to the Aux terminal when switched to the Aux source.
    • On2: Activates the attenuator function when turning on the power with the auxiliary source selected. This prevents the noise when no external unit is connected to the Aux terminal. Turn off the attenuator function when listening to output from an external unit.
    • Off: Disables the selection of the Aux source.

Auxiliary Display: The KDC-152 allows you to select the source type displayed when using the auxiliary input. You can choose from AUX, DVD, Portable, Game, Video, or TV.

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Kenwood KDC-152 utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior CD sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The Kenwood KDC-152 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the KDC-152 are as follows:

    • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels

3-Way Rotary Volume Control: The CD receiver uses a 3-way rotary volume control that increases and decreases the volume of the stereo from 0 to 35. The rotary knob also controls other audio settings such as Balance, Fader, Bass, Mid, Treble and preset EQ settings. In addition, the rotary knob allows you to scroll through and select your music tracks when the Music Search function is activated.

Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0 (-8 to +8 for Aux source).

Speaker Settings: The Speaker Setting function tailors the System Q Sound Control settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Speaker Setting of 'SP-Off' (flat/off), 'SP-OEM' (for OEM factory speaker systems), 'SP-6x9/6' (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers), or 'SP-5/4' (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).

Preset EQ: Eight EQ curves are preset into memory, allowing you to recall the best preset EQ curve for different types of music. Each preset has its own level settings for bass (100Hz), midrange (1kHz), and treble (10kHz). You can choose from the following preset EQ curves - Rock, Pops, Easy, Top 40, Jazz, Natural, Game, and User.

Bass/Treble/Mid Control: The System Q's User Mode features independent Bass (100 Hz), Treble (10 kHz) and Midrange (1 kHz) control from - 8 to +8 dB.

Bass Boost: In addition, The Kenwood CD receiver features a Bass Boost control that can be set to the following levels (LV1, LV2 or Off).

Source Tone Memory: This feature allows you to store System Q bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (CD, Tuner, and Aux).

Supreme Setting: When MP3 or WMA files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Supreme Setting function restores their high frequencies so the sound quality is closer to files encoded at a high bit rate. The processing is optimized for the compression format and the bit rate used. When the Supreme Setting is Off, the unit plays the original sound stored in the audio file.

Selectable Preamp Output: The KDC-152 features a preamp output that you can adjust from a full-range rear speaker preamp output to a low-pass subwoofer preamp output.

Subwoofer Controls: The Kenwood KDC-152 offers the following subwoofer controls, when you have the unit's subwoofer preamp output activated.

    • Low Pass Filter: The receiver features a built-in Low Pass Filter control for the preamp-output, when the output is set to Subwoofer. You can select from 85 Hz, 120 Hz, 160 Hz or off.
    • Subwoofer Phase: You can adjust the phase of the subwoofer output between 180-degrees (Reverse) or 0-degrees (Normal).
    • Subwoofer Level: Once the Subwoofer preamp output is activated, you can independently control the subwoofer preamp output level (-15 to +15) from the CD receiver.

Tel Mute: The KDC-152 features a cell-phone mute wire (brown) in its harness that when hooked up to your car's phone system mute wire will automatically mute the receiver's audio signal when a call comes in.

Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Display Features

Detachable Face: The Kenwood KDC-152 features a single front loading CD face that detaches from the chassis to deter theft.

Note: No face case is included with this unit. An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can be purchased for this unit.

Fluorescent Display: The Kenwood head unit features a single-line, 11-character, bluish-white backlit fluorescent display with red button illumination.

Display Dimmer: The display has two brightness settings to adjust the brightness of the display according to the surrounding illumination. You can change this setting within the menu from On or Off.

Demo Mode: This unit features a Demo mode which can be turned On or Off within the menu.

    Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: The KDC-152 comes with the RC-405 IR wireless remote control with a full numeric keypad (0-9). The remote will control Audio, CD, and Tuner functions. It is powered by a single CR2025 3V lithium-cell battery (supplied).

    • Numeric Keypad: The wireless remote control features a numeric keypad (0-9) which allows direct track access of your music tracks & files, as well as AM/FM presets.
