Overview

Our take on the Kenwood KDC-248U

Sure, you can plug an iPod® into an aux input if you want to listen to your tunes in the car, but why settle? If you connect it to Kenwood's KDC-MP248U CD receiver through its USB input, you'll get better sound and you'll be able to control your iPod from the receiver, too.

Outstanding sound quality
The KDC-248U is a no-nonsense way to add iPod control and great sound to your car. Its potent built-in amplifier fills your car with sound, adjustable with Kenwood's System Q 3-band equalizer and bass boost. Not that you'll need to tweak it that much — the receiver's premium digital-to-analog converter converter renders your discs and digital files with exceptional accuracy, so you'll enjoy outstanding sound quality.

You've got connections
Even if you don't have your iPod on hand, you can keep the party going all day by loading in a disc full of MP3 and WMA files, or by jacking another device into the front panel aux in. When you're ready to expand your system, a set of preamp outputs simplify the job of adding an amp or a powered sub for some extra kick in your sound.

Note: If you're going to use your iPod with this receiver, be sure to check "Details" for specific iPod model compatibility with this receiver.

This is a nice unit and works well in my sons Silverado. It works very well with iPhone -> Pandora. The adjustments on the unit are a little complicated but work ok once you get used to them. Overall we are very pleased with the product especially cosidering the price.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy installation & has all the functions I want. I'm not a true audiophile and only wanted a decent sounding replacement for my old factory AM/FM/Casette unit. This Kenwood model may not be a true high performance unit but it's a clear step up from my old factory one and the USB port is great. Instead of dragging around a bunch of CD's I just carry a single thumb drive with my favorite music. FM reception much better than my old factory unit. Nice clean look in the dash without unnecessary gimmickry.

Pros: Clean look Good sound quality Adequate functions to tune unit to type of music and speakers Easy to learn operating functions USB & auxiliary port

Cons: Lightweight & cheap feel to switches

I bought this for my 18 year old sons vehicle. I wanted something with good quality that was reasonably priced and simple to use. The KDC-248U fit the bill. I installed it in 20 minutes and did the initial set up in five minutes. I am running a Bazooka bass tube and four Polk speakers with it and it sounds great!! Plenty of bottom end and clear crisp highs. Easy to use and understand.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I looked at a lot of receivers before purchasing this unit. The sound quality is much better than factory, even with factory speakers. Installation took a couple of extra days since the first dash kit came broken. Customer Service shipped out a replacement ASAP and we we're all set. Wire Harness was easy to do as well. I was surprised at how good the AM reception in the unit was. The supplied adapter works very well. Instructions were eay to ready and the install took all of 15 minutes. The USB and auxiallry inputs are nice. I can play my old Ipod Nano 4th gen with the controls on the unit. The only thing I haven't discovered is how to turn the "Beep" off. an attenuator button on unit would have been 5 stars easy. I still give it a 4.5 overall. I'd buy this unit again.

Pros: Auxillary/Ipod interface, sound quality, ease of use.

Cons: No attenuator on unit, just remote. Dim on unit isn't all that dim.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just installed this yesterday. Seems like a real nice stereo, now have to figure out how to make the necessary settings, etc. Only gripe is that it's not that intuitve to figure out in terms of the controls and seems like most functionality is via the remote. I'm not used to using a remote in a car. I like to just use the buttons on the radio. I seem to be unable to turn off the stereo; the remote isn't doing it and I think that's how it's suppsed to work. There is no primary pwr button on the radio itself. It shuts off when the car is shut off - at least until i figure it out. I hope it's not a wiring problem in the 13 wires I had to conect. Also, didn't care for the 13 wires I had to connect, mostly just tedious. Took 2.5 hrs to put in and is the first radio I have ever installed. The first use of my Ipod via the USB drive was seemless, it immediately started playing and scrolling artist / song. The detailed instructions provided are very helpful. My real comments are about Crutchfiled. What an awesome company. Their tech support is top notch. I called them 4 times during my installation; 2 out of 4 times was direct to a person to trouble shoot with, the other 2 were 1 call transfer away. They know their stuff and are spot on !! Great job Crutchfield.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great unit as an upgrade from your factory stereo. As this was my first install of a custom stereo, I wanted something simple to use, relatively inexpensive, and great sound quality. Kenwood has impressed me on all three of these categories. The stereo sounds great, was not incredibly difficult to install for someone with any amount of how-to knowledge, and is an excellent bang-for-your-buck stereo. I wish that the dimmer switch on the car would automatically dim the stereo as well, but leaving it at its bright setting is not really a nuisance for night driving. Even with my factory speakers still installed, I noticed that the bass was more clear and distinct, and sound clarity is retained at much higher volumes. Operation is very intuitive (I've never needed to look at the directions to perform any task). I'd recommend this to anyone.

Pros: Easy to use, far more quality than factory radio, good value

Cons: Does not automatically dim with headlight switch like factory radio (but is manually dimmable)

    Ok for the price

    2004 Saturn VUE
    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I like this unit a lot, especially when you consider the price. I was willing to forgo Bluetooth, but very much wanted a way to play the musical and podcasting libraries on my family's various Apple iOS devices. I'm really pleased with the performance in this area. The text displays is easy to read and does a nice job displaying the iOS data: title, artist, track, etc. Despite my feeling that many faceplates have complicated and/or tiny controls, I find this unit pretty easy to use. The red backlighting is a nice touch, and the unit looks good in my 2004 Saturn VUE. If you are looking for Bluetooth, look elsewhere. But if you want a tuner/CD/iOS player, this is a good unit with great sound.

Pros: built in amp power, iOS connectivity, easy controls, nice sound

Cons: occasionally the song title display gets out sync with the iOS device, always recovers by the next song

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've had this unit in my 2000 Jeep Cherokee for over a year now and it is hands down an awesome unit. Great sound even with factory speakers. I noticed an earlier review that stated it has a 256 song limit for a USB key and I have not found this to be true, I use a 8 GB usb key for my music and the unit has no problems playing them straight thru or searching. As far as the small buttons go once you learn which one does what it should be easy to use them while driving.

Pros: Easy Instal, Great Sound, Awesom price

Cons: The random play seems a bit weak when using a large repository of music such as the afore mentioned USB key . The display does not have a "cycle thru all modes" option.

    Disapointed

Barry from Patten, ME on 10/13/2012

Very hard to drive and go through those tiny buttons to find a menu.

    Pros:

Cons: The clock gains about 1 minute every week. Once a month, I have to set it back about 4 minutes. I use a thumb drive in the USB port. The unit will only recognize the first 256 songs on the flash drive. I have over 400 songs on the flash drive. I had to separate them into two directories (folders), and pick one or the other. The manual and specs never mentioned that it would only recognize 256 files.

I really wanted a new deck to play my iPod on. This one had all the right features and looked cool. It was easy to install, and the sound quality is incredible. I can't get over how much better my music sounds. The remote is great. You don't have to mess around reaching for buttons. Which the buttons on this receiver are small, but that's another reason why the remote is great. You can control your iPod from the remote (which is easier then using the buttons). I don't think it says in the description that it charges your iPod when plugged in, but it definitely does for those wondering. I don't know much about stereo systems, but I know that this Kenwood CD receiver is awesome. Exactly the deck I was looking for: great price, and plays my iPod. :)

Pros: Sound quality, remote, ease of installation, USB/iPod port

Cons: You can't dim the lights, it's bright, and it being red doesn't help, I wish you could change the color also. Small buttons.

This unit is well worth the money. I purchased it to replace an older JVC unit that was slowly going out. This unit was easy to install and the sound quality is great! The iPod hook up makes it even more versitile.

Pros: Easy to install; great sound quality; iPod/USB compatible; external/aux hook ups; cd is mp3 compatible. Remote. Great value for the money!

Cons: iPod can be hard to navigate from radio. You wll not be able to select music/playlist while it is hooked up to radio. You must select music/playlist prior to hooking up iPod, then you can advance music using iPod.

Pros: front USB/stereo inputs, great sound quality, nice power output, removeable faceplate, clean clear screen, easy install

Cons: screen doesn't dim, iPhone gets hot when plugged in through USB, switching between functions (USB, CD, FM) takes several "input" button presses instead of instant

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I haven't worked on my car in over 25 years. Probably 30. That was the last time I installed my own radio. I bought that one from Crutchfield as well. This one I bought for my daughter's car, to replace the JVC radio that came in it. It is a 2001 Mazda in great shape, except the radio was an aftermarket one and not installed very well. I researched the Kenwood and bought it because it had all the features my daughter would need (iPod connection), but was not overly expensive for this really old car. It was a holiday present and I wanted to surprise her, even though she had asked for a new radio. The Radio was easy to program and setup. I especially like the 3 bands of FM stations so I can have my own stations preset. My daughter said I got the stations right for her band. She uses her iPod as well as CD's on it and it works and sounds great.

Pros: iPod USB and standard audio connection gives a choice on connecting as a "headphone" or with full control of iPod. Preset sound equalization for music genre is great.

Cons: Might have liked a choice of color, but red is OK. No real negatives.

    Powerful, but difficult to use.

This is a powerful and feature laden head unit. I like its universal adapters, 3.5mm and iPod USB covers just about all media player inputs out there. The iPod search software in the headunit is tedious to use though and requires much scrolling and menu manipulation. For the price though, I think it does a good job.

Pros: Turned a bland stock stereo into a thumping, musical panorama. Made my Polk Audio 6.5s come alive.

Cons: Difficult user interface. Takes time to understand the menus.

I was impressed with the sound quality. I liked the way my factory stereo sounded,so I was super happy to hear the fidelity raise up to a new level. Crisp sound with lots of deep clear bass. It sounds so good with my stock speakers that i now have to upgrade my door speakers so i can have my mind blown again. Also, easy to use controls, and the mastersheet was on the money. Thanks Crutchfield.

This product is great, it was easy to install, just make sure you buy the adapter, it makes things so very easy! I thought i needed new speakers, but as it turns out i just needed a higher output from my stereo to power the speakers. Needless to say, i love this new unit and if i had to in tall a radio again i would do it in a heartbeat!

From start to finish it took less than an hour to install. Our daughter had it all figured out before I had my tools pcked up! Great sound, great product, great installation instructions. I just wish I had used Crutchfield for our son's car stereo. I won't even think of looking anywhere else but Crutchfield for our next car audio purchase.

Pros: Everything I needed to do the installation myself was included. Great instructions for our specific vehicle.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this so I could hook my iPhone up to my 2002 Grand Prix. The stock unit sounded good, but no inputs for MP3 or a phone. I was surprised how much better this sounded than the stock (I had the upgraded stock stereo). This was easy to install, even though I had to shave a small amount of plastic on the sides of the opening to fit the new unit in. Only delayed me a few minutes. This unit has all the best features, is easy to control, and a bonus is that the lights are red, which matches the lights inside my Pontiac. All the included accessories from Crutchfield made this install painless.

Pros: Excellent sound quality, great features, USB port for iPhone, scrolling track titles

Fantastic unit! Great sound, direct iPod control. Source button is too close to the faceplate eject, and the volume/control knob is a little too slick. Wish it dimmed with the car too. But for the price, this is loaded with handy features that make this the most usable Kenwood deck with the best bang for the buck! Note: there is an attenuator button on the remote, but who uses a remote...

Pros: USB + AUX, great interface, great price, great sound!

Was relatively painless to install and everything worked well out of the box and the price was right...especially since it included the mounting bracket and wiring harness to fit in my car.

There are lower prices for other decks with front USB inputs out there, but the extras that come with a Cruthchfield order go WAY above the bar to compensate. Cruthfield is the best value BY FAR when you consider the entire package.

I needed an inexpensive deck because the OE amp in my SC400 died, and $250-600 to fix a 16 year old system or $100 for current technology was an easy choice. Another Kenwood deck I love. It may not have all the bells and whistles, but $100 for an IPOD control radio was impossible to pass up.

Trouble with MP3's from CD and USB device

Kenwood luvr from Minneapolis on 10/25/2011

It also works with a limited number of ipods, check the list before you purchase. It doesn't show songs from the Shuffle. The other issue I have is the buttons are very light plastic. The main dial is so smooth and light that it is hard to tell if you are turning the knob. It also has an IPOD button on the front that does nothing. A little confusing until you read the directions and discover it is just for looks.

Pros: Crutchfield does a great job bundling all of the proper connections and install tools with the unit. Installs easily. Performs ok.

Cons: My main issue is that the unit can't read mp3's from cds or from my Android phone. It scans but can find the files.

The radio sounds good, decent power too. I use the USB with a 16GB flash drive and it works flawless. Bought this stereo based on other recommendations on this website. All have been spot on. This was installed in my son's 2004 Tacoma. It took 15 minutes to remove the old stereo and about 45 minutes to install it. The reason being was the harness had to be spliced and crimped. The sound is outstanding. I didnt want anything too fancy but still wanted a nice unit and I think this really fits the bill. Main reason for buying was the USB for iphone which works flawlessly. I love being able to choose between controlling the music from the receiver or the iphone. The price on this was amazing.. competitive with the cheaper electronics stores around town, except it had free shipping along with everything needed for the install. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking for an inexpensive receiver with front panel USB and a CD player to replace the factory unit in my 93 Ford Ranger. The 248U meets my needs perfectly at a steal of a price. As usual, Crutchfield was perfect. Quick delivery, amazingly detailed instructions, plus the freebies: the two wiring harnesses I needed, a mounting bracket, and even the DIN removal tool I needed to get the old radio out. I never go anywhere else for car audio. Installation was easy and the fit was perfect. It took a couple of hours. The 248U has way more power than I need. I have it hooked to Infinity 6812cf speakers. It sounds great with CDs and MP3s after a little tweaking with the audio controls. The controls took some getting used to - they aren't very intuitive. Be ready to sit in the car for a half hour or so with the instruction book to get up to speed. I've used USBs with and without the extra data from the KME Light software (free download from Kenwood). The extra data gives you lots of search options but for me it's overkill (and too complicated). I might feel differently if I had a lot more music on a single USB. The only reason I didn't give the 248U 5 stars is that the buttons on the left side of the faceplate (that I use a LOT) are tiny and mushy. I can't find them easily by feel and I can rarely tell if I've successfully pressed one of them. After looking at other single DIN units online I'm not sure you can find larger buttons, but the feel ought to be better.

I had this for about a month and a half and recently it started flashing *Protected* mode. I took the faceplate off and reset it and it worked for a little bit after that. Such a shame though because I have 4 great sounding speakers, an amp, and subwoofers connected to it. It sounded great at first but for only working for a month or so before breaking? It really disappointed me. Doing research this can happen due to blown speakers to bad wiring. It seems the Kenwood unit is very picky which is both pro and con, but mostly a con. If I were you, I would get another unit because this one seems to be "Sensitive". Being FPO it would take a long time to send back in and probably a long painful process to repair. Your money is probably best spent else where.

This radio has good RMS for those of you who don't care for installing extra amps, and the USB jack works well enough with .mp3 files (I never hook in my ipod, so I wouldn't know how that functions.). There aren't many sound adjustments, though. And the thing that bothers me ... I can't choose the type of display for tracks ... which means that a good percentage of the time, there is no id3 tag, and I just see: Track38 flashing on the radio. Overall, it's a good value, but the display thing makes me wish I'd have bought a model or two higher.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this stereo for my 2007 Pontiac G6 Base Sedan. It works well and does what it should but it is not the most user-friendly stereo. The display is only one line of scrolling text. It has the older "digital watch" style text. Instead of having pixels; it has sections that light up. You know I mean. What this means is that I can not see the artist of the song and the title at the same time. I have to wait for it to scroll. This also means I can not see the time and the song name/artist at the same time. I don't like that at all since you have to use one of the buttons to change what is on the display. This stereo does not have a lot of buttons either and some of the text below buttons can be hard to read. I would prefer a lot of buttons with specific uses so that you don't spend your driving time scrolling through menus, trying to figure out how to change the bass. Potential Buyers- If you are on a budget this is a good stereo. iPod compatibility is always worth it. If you aren't on such a tight budget I would suggest getting a stereo with - easier controls (read reviews to find which ones are good) - Larger display (to see song name, artist, and time all at once) Now by NO MEANS am I saying this is a bad stereo! It is a great upgrade from my stock one that I could only play CDs on. I simply focused on the flaws because that is usually what people are looking for. The product description from the manufacturer will cover positives.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this unit as a replacement for a factory stereo which the display had become unreadable. It has fantastic sound with my XM Radio through the AUX input and iPod through the USB port. It has slightly less quality sound with FM, but has a very reduced range for AM (stations than have transmitters less than 10 miles away fade.) Clear channel stations less than 50 miles away are virtually absent. Since this is going into my daughter's car, the lack of quality AM signal is not a great issue. Be aware if you are fond of bandscanning at night. UPDATE 8/21: The reason for the poor reception was I did not have the power amplifier wire connected in the harness. I thought this was for an external power amplifer. I did not realize I had an antenna amplifer in my vehicle. After this connection was made, the receiver was operating as good if not better than the factory stereo.

Decided to replace the broken down OEM radio in my Corolla. I called the experts at Crutchfield and was actually guided to a less expensive model that meet all my requirements and the price included everything I needed to install, minus the cap crimp connectors. A very quick and easy install and a great product. Looks great and works great. Very happy with the price and expert service. Thank you Axel.

This is a great head unit, especially for the price. You get the head unit, thorough instructions, and everything you need to install and wire it. This is easy to use and gets loud. Even before I put new speakers in my car, it was noticeably louder from the getgo. With 50w peak and 22w RMS, this is very powerful and has a higher RMS than any unit in this price range. Easy to use and a very clean design. Once I paired it with Kenwood performance series speakers, it sounds excellent and gets LOUD. I have always been a fan of Kenwood.

The cable adapter really makes this easy. Today, the color coding of the wires means putting it all together is not difficult. The bracket kit looks really weird when you first pull it out of the box/bag, but just take a few minutes and it will all start to come together (literally snaps together, very nice). The unit has a bright and clear console, the auto detection when you put in a CD or add a USB stick with music is great. iPod controls make this a dream. I even plugged in my iPad and ran movies through the stereo, and it was like being in a movie theater, it was such good sound. Great price for what you get!

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was my first time installing a radio in a car. The installation was fairly simple and crutchfield's site made it easy for me to have everything that I needed. The radio has a nice look and sounds better than my stock radio. I love that I can play songs from my iphone and it charges my phone at the same time. Functions are easy to use once you get used to them. The only problem I have with it, is setting the preset FM stations. It has a total of 18 preset FM radio stations available, but when I preset some stations on FM2, they end up being set on FM1 and vice versa. Maybe I should read the manual some more, but it should not be that confusing. It does not bother me too much though, since I don't really need that many preset stations. Overall I think the kenwood, with the features and the price I paid for it, is a good buy.

Kenwood KDC-248U is a major improvement over the factory radio. With the sheet Crutchfield supplied made it easy and quick to switchout the radios. I enjoy being able to connect my IPOD and listen during my hour ride to and from work each day.I was originally reluntent in purchasing the Kenwood based on price because I thought I would get a cheap radio; this was not the case. Quality was quickly realized when I turned on the radio- wow.

The stereo added good sound to my factory speakers, i have yet to see what it will do for my replacement speakers. For the money, Id say this is definitely worth it.

I installed this in a friend of mine's 2000 Toyota Echo. Including the wiring harness adapter and in dash receiver kit, everything went in without a hitch. And the sound is incredible! Before I installed a full set of Kicker DS series speakers, I tested operation of the CD Player with the old stock speakers still in place, and the difference was night and day. Its a great looking unit, and the added capability of Ipod controls through the cd player itself is just icing on the cake. Highly recommended, and when the time comes for me to upgrade the radio in my vehicles, this will be my head unit of choice. Will buy again, most definitely.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed in an original miata. Great at night, but the display is impossible to read during the day...every digit segment looks lit looking like purple circled asterisks across the screen unless you shadow it with your hand. brightness is all the way up, but then it's distractingly bright at night. Audio settings could be easier to access more quickly/easily. Detachable face is difficult to release often, wish it wasn't detachable so I could leave it in place when I leave the car. Sound quality and depth are great, radio reception is impressive. Oddly, if a station is slightly static-y, it hides the static sound but makes the volume quiet...beware for it being loud when you change stations. Wish there was a quick way to mute or turn off...it requires you to hold the source button a few secs to turn it off. If I could read it during the day and without it looking purple, I would rate it 5 star.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My husband installed this for me in my 1998 Toyota Camry. He said it took a solid 10 minutes to install it. It sticks a little farther out of the dash than the old one, but I really don't mind. I'm very pleased with the sound quality and performance so far. I've tried the tuner, aux and CD inputs and have been pleased with the sound quality. My only minor gripe is that the fact that all the controls are through the volume knob make it a little unintuitive, and I wish that didn't occupy as much attention as it does when I'm driving. (I could easily solve this problem by not fussing with the equalizer while I'm driving). It's taken a week or two to get used to the controls, but I'm pretty happy with them now.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's a great little deck for less than a hundred bucks. It sounds great and is plenty loud. I installed new rear speakers at the same time I was replacing an absolutely atrocious Pioneer deck that decided it was interested in powering the front channel any more. It sounds great and does a good job for the price. Some things that need improving are I wish it didn't light up red. It really bites into my field of vision at night. I turned the dimmer on and that helped. The iPod/iPhone control is pretty basic. I eventually shut it off so I can do control the music right from the phone and that works far better. Last and this may be an iPhone problem but when listening to Pandora, the display hangs on whatever song you had on the iPhone last. It's a great deal and if you've got a terrible deck the the previous owner got at the local big box, it's worth the money and a couple hours to install this.

I give 4 stars since there's always room for improvement. This is my second Kenwood and am very happy with it (sold the car with the first one in it). I've had it for two weeks. The sound quality is much better than the stock Nissan radio, which does not play mp3s. I upgraded the stock speakers and the sound is noticably better. The USB port takes a flash drive straight plug in-no wire needed. It recognized the mp3s and subdirectories immediately. I also like how the preselect buttons are larger than previous models. Have not tried the Aux jack or iPod controls but with 380 songs on a 4GB flash drive that's 1/2 full, I don't need an iPod. It does what I want it to and, so far, does it well. I'd recommend it.

    Display Features

Detachable Face: The Kenwood KDC-248U features a single front loading CD face that detaches from the chassis to deter theft. The head unit includes a cloth pouch for storing the face-plate when detached.

Note: An optional soft face case (142DFC1X, sold separately) can also be purchased for this unit.

Fluorescent Display: The Kenwood head unit features an 11-character blue backlit fluorescent display with red button illumination.

Display Illumination/Clock Display: When the unit is in Standby mode, the face and button illumination is "keyed." When the Clock Display is turned on and the unit is in Standby mode, the Clock Display is also "keyed." Pressing and holding the source button turns the unit off completely.

Display Dimmer: The display has two brightness settings to adjust the brightness of the display according to the surrounding illumination. You can change this setting within the menu from On or Off.

Demo Mode: This unit features a Demo mode which can be turned On or Off within the menu.

    Audio Section

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Kenwood KDC-248U utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior CD sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The Kenwood KDC-248U is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the KDC-248U are as follows:

    • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels

Rotary Volume Control: The CD receiver uses a rotary volume control that increases and decreases the volume of the stereo from 0 to 35. The rotary knob also controls other audio settings such as Balance, Fader, Bass, Mid, Treble and preset EQ settings. In addition, the rotary knob allows you to scroll through and select your music tracks when the Music Search function is activated.

Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0 (-8 to +8 for Aux source).

Speaker Settings: The Speaker Setting function tailors the System Q Sound Control settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Speaker Setting of 'SP-Off' (flat/off), 'SP-OEM' (for OEM factory speaker systems), 'SP-6x9/6' (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers), or 'SP-5/4' (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).

System Q Sound Control: Eight EQ curves are preset into memory, allowing you to recall the best preset EQ curve for different types of music. Each preset has its own level settings for bass (100Hz), midrange (1kHz), and treble (10kHz). You can choose from the following preset EQ curves - Rock, Pops, Easy, Top 40, Jazz, Natural, Game, and User.

Bass/Treble/Mid Control: The System Q's User Mode features independent Bass (100 Hz), Treble (10 kHz), and Midrange (1 kHz) control from - 8 to +8 dB.

Bass Boost: In addition, The Kenwood CD receiver features a Bass Boost control that can be set to the following levels - LV1, LV2 or Off.

Source Tone Memory: This feature allows you to store System Q bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (CD, Tuner, USB/iPod, and Aux).

Supreme Setting: When MP3 or WMA files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Supreme Setting function restores their high frequencies so the sound quality is closer to files encoded at a high bit rate. The processing is optimized for the compression format and the bit rate used. When the Supreme Setting is Off, the unit plays the original sound stored in the audio file.

Selectable 2.0V Preamp Output: The KDC-248U features a 2.0-volt stereo preamp output that you can be adjusted from a full-range rear speaker preamp output to a low-pass subwoofer preamp output.

Subwoofer Controls: The Kenwood KDC-248U offers the following subwoofer controls, when you have the unit's subwoofer preamp output activated.

    • Low Pass Filter: The receiver features a built-in Low Pass Filter control for the preamp-output, when the output is set to Subwoofer. You can select from 80 Hz, 120 Hz, 160 Hz, or off.
    • Subwoofer Phase: You can adjust the phase of the subwoofer output between 180-degrees (Reverse) or 0-degrees (Normal).
    • Subwoofer Level: Once the Subwoofer preamp output is activated, you can independently control the subwoofer preamp output level (-15 to +15) from the CD receiver.

Tel Mute: The KDC-248U features a cell-phone mute wire (brown) in its harness that when hooked up to your car's phone system mute wire will automatically mute the receiver's audio signal when a call comes in.

Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Radio Functions

AM/FM Tuner: The Kenwood KDC-248U features a built-in AM/FM tuner. You can choose one of three tuning modes: Auto 1 (seek tuning), Auto 2 (cycles through and tunes the selected band's preset stations only with each button press), or Manual.

Tuner Presets: The KDC-248U's tuner features 3 FM banks (1, 2, 3) and 1 AM bank for storing presets. The Kenwood KDC-248U offers two preset modes.

    • Normal: You can store 6 presets for each AM/FM bank giving you a total of 18 FM presets and 6 AM presets (total of 24).
    • Mix: A total of of 6 stations can be assigned to a total of 6 preset buttons, regardless of AM/FM band and connected Satellite Radio tuner. You can recall a preset station without switching between bands.

Auto Memory Tuning: Not only does the CD receiver's tuner allow you manually enter your desired presets you can choose to have the unit automatically put stations with good reception in the memory banks automatically; this is a handy feature when traveling.

    Disc Playback

Disc Compatibility: The unit features a single disc player that will playback CD-Audio, CD-Text, and finalized CD-R/CD-RW audio discs.

MP3/WMA Playback: The KDC-248U can play MP3 (8-320 kbps) and WMA (32-192 kbps) files recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs in ISO9660 Level 1/Level 2, Joliet, Romeo, and Long file name formats. Each disc can have a maximum of 8 directory levels, 50 folders, and 255 files per folder (512 maximum number of files and folders). During MP3/WMA playback, the unit displays any recorded ID3 Tag (ver. 1.x/2.x) and WMA Tag information - up to 60 characters.

Text Scroll: The KDC-248U will display CD text or Audio file text. You can set the text scrolling feature to two different modes (Auto or Manual) to scroll longer titles across the screen.

Music Search: The Kenwood AM/FM CD receiver features a Music Search feature which allows you to scroll through and select your MP3/WMA music folders and files, as well as scroll through your audio CD's music tracks using the head unit's rotary knob.

Direct Music Search: The supplied IR wireless remote control (RC-405) allows you to search for music directly by entering the track number.

Playback Modes: The Kenwood KDC-248U features the following Repeat, Random, and Scan playback modes.

    • Repeat Play: Track, File, or Folder
    • Random Play: Disc or Folder
    • Scan Play: Track or File (plays the first 10-seconds of each music track on a disc or music file in a folder)

Last Position Memory: If the unit is shut off or switched to the tuner mode while a CD is playing, the next time CD is selected as the source, playback will resume from the point where it left off.

CD Read: This function sets the method for reading a CD disc. You can choose between two modes.

    • CD1: Automatically distinguishes between audio file disc and music CD when playing a CD or CD-R/RW disc.
    • CD2: When unable to play a special formatted CD, set this function to CD2 to force playing. Some music CD  discs may be unplayable even when set to this mode.

Off Insert/Eject: A CD disc can be inserted or ejected with the power off. When a disc is inserted with the power off, the unit will automatically power up and begin playback.

    USB/iPod/Aux Connectivity

USB Port: The Kenwood KDC-248U features a front panel USB (1.1/2.0) type-A port that is hidden behind a flip-up cover. The USB port enables connection and control of a portable USB mass-storage class (MSC) device with MP3 (8-320 kbps) and WMA (32-192 kbps) music files. The USB port is compatible with all USB mass storage class devices that support the FAT16 or FAT32 file system. Your USB device should only have a maximum of 8 folder layers, 255 folders, and 255 files per folder - with a maximum of 65,025 files and folders. USB portable audio players that can be charged via USB will be charged when plugged into the CD receiver's USB port, and the vehicle's ignition switch is set to ACC or On.

Note: You cannot connect a USB device via a USB hub or Multi-Card Reader to this unit.

iPod/iPhone Direct Connection: The KDC-248U's front-panel USB port also acts as an iPod/iPhone high-speed direct connection when used with the optional Kenwood USB Direct Connection Cable (113KCIP102, sold separately) or the USB/iPod cable that comes with your iPod/iPhone. Using either cable allows audio playback, music navigation, information display, and charging of select iPod/iPhone models from the KDC-248U.

iPod/iPhone Audio Playback: The USB connection allows your iPod/iPhone's large music libraries to be loaded instantly to the head unit and sound quality to be maximized through the head unit's 24-bit D/A converter, allowing for a Signal to Noise ratio up to 105dB. • Playlists: You can create your own custom iPod/iPhone playlist (up to 10 songs) from the head unit.
    • Repeat & Random: The head unit supports Repeat (file) & Random (folder) playback functions of your connected iPod/iPhone.

iPod/iPhone Display: The KDC-248U will display your iPod/iPhone's music file information when you are controlling your iPod or iPhone from the Kenwood head unit. The head unit will display Track number, Elapsed playing time, Artist name, Song title, and Album label. If you choose to operate your connected iPod/iPhone via its clickwheel or touchscreen controls, the KDC-248U will not display your iPod/iPhone's music information (the head unit will instead display iPod MODE).

iPod/iPhone Charging: While connected and the ignition switch is set to ACC or ON, the head unit's USB connection will power and charge your iPod/iPhone.

Note: If your iPod/iPhone has no initial battery charge, then the unit will not recognize it.

Note: Apple iPod/iPhone software updates may change functionality results. If you download a newer software version, you may need to reset the head unit and your iPod/iPhone to regain functionality. If this doesn't work, you may need to revert to the older software version or wait until a newer software update is available.

Aux In: The unit is equipped with a front panel 3.5mm minijack auxiliary input that can be used to input audio from a portable audio source, such as a portable MP3 player. The Aux input must be turned on to function. The unit has 3 auxiliary input modes.

    • On1: Outputs the sound of the external unit connected to the Aux terminal when switched to the Aux source.
    • On2: Activates the attenuator function when turning on the power with the auxiliary source selected. This prevents the noise when no external unit is connected to the Aux terminal. Turn off the attenuator function when listening to output from an external unit.
    • Off: Disables the selection of the Aux source.

Auxiliary Display: The KDC-248U allows you to select the source type displayed when using the auxiliary input. You can choose from AUX, DVD, Portable, Game, Video, or TV.

    Remote Control

Wireless Remote Control: The KDC-248U comes with an IR remote control (RC-405) for wireless operation of the head unit. The remote will control Audio, CD, USB, and Tuner functions. It is powered by a single CR2025 3V lithium-cell battery (supplied).

Numeric Keypad: The wireless remote control features a numeric keypad (0-9) which allows direct track access of your music tracks & files (from CD or USB), as well as AM/FM presets.

Attenuator: The CD receiver features an Attenuator button on the supplied remote control that turns the volume down very quickly with one touch of the button.

    Optional Software

Music Editor Compatible: The Kenwood KDC-248U supports the PC application, Kenwood Music Editor Lite (ver.1.1.0). Kenwood Music Editor Lite is a Windows-based desktop software that helps organize, manage and transfer MP3 and WMA music files to your USB devices from your PC. When you playback audio files that have been stored on your USB device using Kenwood Music Editor Lite through this unit, you can search a file by title, album, or artist name using the head unit's Music Search function.
