About the Kenwood Excelon KDC-X597

Jon Paul

Ready for your road trip

In most vehicles, you can use an adapter (not included) to connect your vehicle's steering wheel controls to this Kenwood stereo. Connect a few wires, then program the adapter for your particular car and this Kenwood, and you'll retain the convenience of your steering wheel controls. Check the "Accessories" tab for compatible adapters.

Ready for your road trip

Whether you're listening to your favorite music or enjoying an audiobook, you'll be impressed by the Kenwood Excelon KDC-X597 CD receiver's combination of performance and features. You can customize the illumination color to match your vehicle's lighting. Pair up your phone with this Kenwood, and you'll be able to take calls in your car with a touch of a button. Best of all, you also get the security of Kenwood Excelon's remarkable 2-year warranty.

Built-in Bluetooth®

Once you drive with a Bluetooth receiver, you'll wonder how you ever drove without one. Just plug your iPhone® into this receiver's USB port, and the receiver does the rest – one-button pairing means no more confusing menus to wade through. If your iPhone has Siri, you'll be able to talk to her through the external mic and hear her instructions through your car's speakers. You can also use your Bluetooth connection to stream audio to the receiver from just about any Bluetooth-equipped device.

Plenty of entertainment options

  • The convenient front-panel auxiliary and USB inputs give you access to plenty of other listening options. When you plug in your iPod® or iPhone®, you'll enjoy quick navigation of your playlists and albums. Plus, if you listen to Pandora® Internet radio with your iPhone, you won't miss a beat when you plug it into this Kenwood with its dedicated Pandora controls. Android and Blackberry owners can enjoy listening to and controlling Pandora using their Bluetooth connection to the receiver.
  • When you're not listening to drive-time radio, slip in a CD to take advantage of this receiver's 24-bit digital-to-analog converter. It converts the raw data on your disc, including MP3, WMA, and AAC files, to smooth, lifelike sound, and it'll make a big difference in the music on your iPod or thumb drive, too.
  • If you store your music on an Android device, download the free Kenwood Music Control app and enjoy a variety of search and playback features when your phone is plugged into the front-panel USB.
  • For satellite radio subscribers (or those who plan to be), the KDC-X597 works with SiriusXM's outboard tuner (not included), so you can enjoy coast-to-coast reception of your favorite talk, sports, and music programming.

Shape your sound

Wimpy bass and treble controls can't compare with the KDC-X597's 3-band parametric equalizer, high- and low-pass filters, and selectable bass boost, along with settings that let you adjust for your car's speaker setup. And don't forget another Excelon sound advantage. If you're building a car audio system, one of the keys to the getting the most out of your amplifiers is a clean, powerful signal from your preamp outputs. All Kenwood Excelon receivers feature 4-volt preamp outputs that will give your amps the strong signal they need for top performance.

Want to keep your car's steering wheel audio controls?

Excelon Series: The KDC-X597 CD receiver is part of Kenwood's Excelon series line-up. It incorporates the latest technologies and delivers the highest sonic performance. From advanced audio tuning capabilities, crossover and equalizer system, high-voltage preouts (4V), and a two-year warranty - Kenwood Excelon represents exceptional audio quality with long-lasting dependability.

24 Bit D/A Converter: The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X597 utilizes a 24-bit digital to analog converter for superior sound quality.

MOSFET Amplifier: The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X597 is equipped with a MOSFET amplifier. Compared to conventional power supplies, the MOSFET amplification circuit is smaller and more efficient, and it delivers increased power with less distortion and absolutely zero on/off switching noise. More power means louder and cleaner music at higher volumes because you're not pushing the limits of the amplification circuit. The power output specs for the KDC-X597 are as follows:

    • Full Bandwidth Power: 22 watts RMS x 4 channels (at 4 ohms, 20-20kHz, 1% THD)
    • Maximum Output Power: 50 watts x 4 channels

6ch/4V Preamp Outputs: The KDC-X597 features front, rear and subwoofer 4.0-volt preamp outputs. The front and rear speaker preamp outputs are balance and fade adjustable. The subwoofer preamp output is non-fading. The front, rear, and subwoofer preamp outputs are fixed to the rear chassis of the head unit.

Front & Rear High-Pass Filter: The KDC-X597  features a High-Pass Crossover for the front & rear channels when your front & rear speakers are connected by the unit's speaker-outputs or preamp-outputs. You can adjust the high-pass crossover from "Through", 100, 120, or 150 Hz. The "Through" selection is a full-range setting.

Subwoofer Controls: The Kenwood Excelon KDC-X597 offers the following subwoofer controls, when you are using unit's subwoofer preamp output.

    • Low Pass Filter: The receiver features a built-in Low Pass Filter control for the preamp-output, when the output is set to Subwoofer. You can select from 85 Hz, 120 Hz, 160 Hz, or off.
    • Subwoofer Phase: You can adjust the phase of the subwoofer output between 180-degrees (Reverse) or 0-degrees (Normal).
    • Subwoofer Level: Once the Subwoofer preamp output is activated, you can independently control the subwoofer preamp output level (-15 to +15) from the CD receiver.

Speaker Settings: The Speaker Setting function tailors the head unit's audio settings according to the type of speakers in your vehicle. You may select a Speaker Setting of 'SP-Off' (flat/off), 'SP-OEM' (for OEM factory speaker systems), 'SP-6x9/6' (for systems with 6" and 6"x9" speakers), or 'SP-5/4' (for systems with 4" and 5" speakers).

EQ Pro: The KDC-X597 is equipped with Kenwood's EQ Pro. The integrated equalizer offers 8 preset sound modes (Natural, Rock, Pops, Easy, Top 40, Jazz, Powerful, and User) suitable for the music genre of your choice. The User mode allows you to manually adjust the head unit's 3-band parametric EQ (Frequency, Level, and Q-Factor).

    EQ Pro
    Frequency Level Q
    Bass 60, 80, 100, 200 Hz -8 to +8 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 2.0
    Midrange 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.5 kHz -8 to +8 0.75, 1.0, 1.25
    Treble 10.0, 12.5, 15.0, 17.5 kHz -8 to +8 Fixed
Note: You can store EQ Pro bass, middle and treble tone settings for each source (Disc, Tuner, Aux, USB, iPod, Bluetooth, and Pandora).

Sound Enhancements: The head unit provides further sound enhancements for your car audio system.

    • Bass Boost: The Kenwood CD receiver features a Bass Boost control that can be set to the following levels (BB1, BB2, BB3, or Off).
    • Loudness: This function enhances low and high frequencies to make the sound clearer lower volumes. There are 3 levels (LV1, LV2, or Off).
    • Supreme Setting: When MP3 or WMA files encoded at a low bit rate (less than 96 kbps, 44.1k, 48kHz) are played, the Supreme Setting function restores their high frequencies so the sound quality is closer to files encoded at a high bit rate. The processing is optimized for the compression format and the bit rate used. When the Supreme Setting is Off, the unit plays the original sound stored in the audio file.

Volume Offset: The level of each source may be independently adjusted to prevent radical leaps in output volume when switching from one source to another. The available settings range from -8 to 0 (-8 to +8 for Aux source).

Key Beep: The in-dash head unit provides an audible beep to confirm button operation. This function can be turned On or Off.

    Built-in Bluetooth

    Q
I have a galaxy s4 i can play music thru the head unit but cant change the tracks?
    dave14  Oct 23, 2014
    1 answer
    A
It must be hooked up through the USB or Bluetooth for the head unit to be able to change the tracks. If it still does not work then this head unit probably does not support your device then. You can change the tracks from your phone, or put your songs onto a flash drive and play them off the flash drive.

I was wondering, when connecting an ipod via a usb cord, does the ipod enter "accessory mode" and I am therefore unable to choose a song through the ipod? I personally hate having to navigate through all the different genres/playlists/artists/what-have-you on a deck; I would much rather do it with my actual ipod.

when using this with my apple I pod or I phone I control the songs I want to hear via usb thgough the pod or phone NOT the deck. However, when in Pandora, the function controls are limited and you need to have the genre/Pandora station already selected on the ipod or phone. only with Pandora do I have to disconnect the usb, change Pandora station and then reconnect. Perhaps I don't know how to use Pandora. but to answer your original question, regular I tunes and music on the pod you use the pod to control what you will listen to-not the deck.

No this radio does not include Sirius XM Radio. The system is easy to use once you get familiar with it. I recommend this to anyone. Fits great in my 97 Jeep Cherokee.

You have to buy the siriusXm tuner separate. It just plugs directly into the back of the radio. Yes its very easy to use while driving as long as you use the presets for stations. I find it a bit hard to search for a station unless I'm stopped somewhere. Overall a great unit and menus are easy to navigate.

What are the best settings using the EQ PRO settings for bass, treble, and middle for listening to loud music such as metal, dubstep and EDM type music?

this is all prefrance realy but you may want to start with the loadness option. i do flat and the do a little boost to the bass. maybe turn down the mid 1 or 2. then crank it up. If i can recall this headunit started to distort at about vol25 without an amp. but i put in a small self powered sub and that makes all the difference in the world. i have sence then put in a small 4 channel amp (50Wx4) and the preamp outputs are realy clean even at 35max volume. hope this helps a little
    thomas  Jul 21, 2014

Peter, that is a loaded question for people. My hearing is not the best, so what we hear will differ greatly. At best my settings are 3/4 of the range off center. People overload bass settings to me, but again me! Set it to mid range and play all kinds of different songs as you adjust each freq. If you use one type of music to adjust, then when another with different range is played it will sound bad. Classicals, piano, and brass band type will cover all the freq. Good speakers and high freq. adjusted, can really bring out tones u never paid attention to. If u play an instrument, tones have a different interest also. Best of luck.
    john  Jul 20, 2014

That's a very good question. I do not have a straight forward unfortunately. I wish I did. I play with the EQ settings all the time. I seems futile, because different genres, even different songs, really benefit from different settings. I am insatiable with EQ settings. Also, I am dissatisfied with my front speakers. My settings a kind of a band-aid for my mediocre front speakers. You have to make sure you have high quality speakers throughout the system before you even begin to experiment with the EQ settings, otherwise you will find it is too challenging to find proper settings... I hope this helps.
    daniel p  Jul 19, 2014
    A
my settings might not be what you like...I like to hear the ground pound in rock and since I listen to very little else I turn the bass up I run the middle flat and the treble low.....you have to experiment with the settings to find what works for you...I can tell you this that this unit despite it's meager price will satisfy just about anything you throw at it....one hint though is if your running factory speakers it would be to your advantage to upgrade them to a speaker that would offer less distortion....Kenwood has a few real fine choices and then there is Infinity...but do upgrade your speakers and you'll get the best out of this very good system.

This is a fantastic radio. I bought this to put a system together and it sounds so good I only bought an amp for my sub in the trunk. Controls are a breeze with or without the remote while driving. If you have steering wheel controls you can get the adaptor. I didn't the remote is so easy to memorize. I fiddle away with ease. As for siri, couldn't help I'm an Android guy. The bluetooth is fantastic and kenwood even released an update that only made it better. I could easily go on and on about how much I love this thing. There is nobody I know that regrets this purchase.

Terrific stereo. I installed it in my 1985 MB 380SL with no problems, and the sound (with the top down) is very clear. The unit has many options for tailoring the sound, and the only (minor) issue I have with it is the main knob isn't rubberized. That's a tiny complaint, really. Not sure about SIRI use, but it pairs easily with my iPhone 5s and all other BT functions are normal. In a convertible I just don't use SIRI that much...or the phone, for that matter unless I'm in slow traffic. For the money, this head unit beats the BOSE tuner I have in my E320 wagon.

I have to pull out my usb card and turn off the system and turn it on again. Why does it do that and if so is there something wrong with my usb card?

Tim, I'm not sure about the Windows OS, I have a Samsung with Android. It works beautifully with my Samsung as far as bluetooth goes. I have had no issues, whether listening to Pandora or using the phone for calls. Hope this helps. I am very pleased with this Kenwood.

Yes it will. Any blue tooth phone should be able to connect and work with it. My last phone was a Nokia Windows Phone it worked perfectly. Except every Motorola phone I've tried to use with it always seems to disconnect quite a few times while listening to Pandora or even making a quick call.

Don't know, but I am extremely disappointed in this radio's Bluetooth connection with the two cell phones I have had. It continuously loses connectivity between the phone and/or hands free connection. I have tried everything from eliminating the phone and reinstalling it (even pulling the battery) to deleting the phone from the radio and trying again from scratch (which I was told from a dealer should work). I don't know if I would by a Kenwood again just for this single reason.

I can't confirm on your specific model, but I know BT streaming works on Samsung Galaxy 3, iPhone 4s and 5, and Nokia Lumia Windows Phone. It's fairly safe to assume it will work with your device.

A problem I have noticed with many of the new CD players is that they just don't put enough power through the USB port. I can plug the phone in and it will give it enough juice to keep running (even with pandora streaming and the GPS running, draining the power); but when I get to my destination, the phone has the same power as when I plugged it in. The only real way to get it to charge is to power direct via the cigarette lighter or put the phone in airplane mode and charge it via the USB unit.

The button between the right arrow key and the number 1 key at the bottom of the unit. Just keep pressing the button until it says clock. It should say title /artist, then artist/album or something like that, and then it says clock. Hope this helps

This was a question that I had also since it was important to me but not addressed in the owners manual. Pushing buttons, I found a small button just to the left of the number 1 preset button. It is the holy grail button! It allows you to scroll through the different fasces displays and lo and behold there is one that displays the time! To much technology? A small price toy pay for such an awesome stereo!

Hi, Josh, I had the same problem in my Chrysler on installation, using my iPhone. I called in to Crutchfield support twice (I forgot to write it down), and two different guys told me how, and this is what worked perfectly: From standard position (with song showing on screen, and power on), push the volume/control knob/button on the left: Next, turn it til you see "Settings", push again; Turn til you see "Detailed Set", push again; Turn to "BT HF/Audio", push again; Then you'll be in the right window which will probably say "Front". Turn the knob to "All" (may have to turn counter clockwise). That is to have BT (bluetooth) play through ALL speakers. For navigating, it's also good to know that you use the little, tiny button bottom left (it's lit up, with what looks like an oblong path with an arrow on the top part, pointing to the left), that will take you back one step when you screw up. Think of that as your "Back" button. Try not to push the big plastic button right under it, or you'll detach the face of your Kenwood, and have to start all over. Good luck, Josh, should work OK. If not, call back in to support and find those guys who know exactly how to do it. They're there, I'm sure. Cheers.
    anthony  Jan 15, 2014

When connected push the volume knob and it will give you options. One of the options will give you the ability to use all of your speakers.

I am assuming the bluetooth sound comes only from front speakers for everything related to bluetooth. In that case press your phone button to go into BT mode then go into settings and from there find the audio or sound setting, go into that and roll the volume button to pick between front rear or all. Once you are in the BT settings you may have to click into a couple of the setting strings before you find the right one. I initially had the same problem and this solved it.

You don't have to plug it in. That's what steered me away from this deck at first. You can use android and iPhone/iPod/iPad simultaneously through Bluetooth. Its an amazing deck and I would recommend it to anyone. The only bad thing I've come a crossed is that sometimes you have to restart your deck because you phone won't recognize the device. But imo, it isn't a big deal at all. It also synchronizes all your contacts to your deck so it makes it truly hands free calling. Hope this helps!

It works great with Android...I use it all the time, just pair your phone and make sure Bluetooth is on. If someone calls it will ring over the speakers, just press the telephone button ( lights up green ) to answer or hang up (lights up red during call). Also, u can make calls from your phone, press send and put the phone down, and you are hands free. I installed the included microphone up near the visor area. As a side note, I use Bluetooth for Pandora streaming, just make sure that the Kenwood is in "Pandora" mode not BT Audio, or you will not get full audio, read BASS (subwoofer). The Bluetooth works great and is the best feature of this receiver. Now I keep the stereo in Pandora mode, walk to my car with Bluetooth on and witbin 10 seconds, Pandora will auto play. Also, the stereo will pause and auto resume streaming for an incoming call. Hope this helps!!! MATT

All the Bluetooth features work with my Android phone. I have a Samsung Galaxy Nexus with Android 4.3 I have noticed if the phone is connected via Bluetooth and playing Pandora or any other music app, and is interrupted by a phone call, after the call ends the Bluetooth connection is occasionally disconnected and you have to wait for it to reconnect in silence. Not sure if it is my phone (it is the same gen as GS3) or the head unit to blame.

Eric If you have a USB output from your fone, you will be able to listen to Pandora. I have an I-fone4, and it plays beautifully thru my car system. You can also receive fone calls the same way. Its a GREAT unit!!! Unbelievable price for all that it offers! PEACE DOC

Yes you will. Just hook the phone up to the head unit with the USB cable, switch the source to Pandora, and the head unit does the rest!

I use my iPhone 4S and listen to Pandora commercial-free on my Kenwood. I would think that if you can connect your phone to the USB port you should be ok . You don't control Pandira with your phone when connected to the Kenwood unit. All control is performed through the receiver either with the remote or on the receiver itself. I love my KDC-X597 and listen to Pandora almost exclusively. Also really like the hands-free phone operation.

I hadd Samsung s3 running same jellybean operating system as the s4 with no issues. I didn't even have to update Pandora to do this.

Wired up per instructions on my 00 Dodge pickup with adapters connecting to factory harness, All wiring went flawlessly with all wires double-checked. Identical setup to my 2001 Dodge pu 4x4. Everything functions on deck but NO SOUND. Used standby/settings/initial setting/ and selected OEM speakers and still no sound after trying all speaker options. No mute button and no ATT on display. Same with CD, BT after pairing my iphone, and on known good radio stations - no sound ! Bad unit? Help

I currently have the Kenwood KDC-148 stereo deck in my vehicle. I want to get a new one that has built in Bluetooth, but I was wondering if I could find one that would fit in my current mount. This way I don't have to make any sort of modifications. Is there one that will fit?

Thanks for your question Cameron. Both the KDC-148 and KDC-X597 are standard DIN receivers, so they should mount the same way in the vehicle. However, you will likely need to replace the wiring harness for the new receiver to work. Feel free to call or chat with an Advisor for full details on what you would need for the install.

Will I be able to hear navigation voice promts while listening to Sattelite radio or itunes? Will it totally mue the music or just lower the music? Thx

Jerry, it's the coolest thing ever: as you're driving, the system will lower the volume, say, "Turn left in one half mile onto Broward Street", then the volume will go right back to where you had it. And when you get to the turn, it'll go down again, and the system will say, "Turn left at Broward Street", and lower and raise you volume the same way. If you screw up, it'll figure it out when you make a U-turn, and it'll just say, "turn RIGHT onto Broward Street", and put your music right back where you had it. Love it. (with my iphone, anyway)

I am sorry to say but I have not used that feature. What I can say is that when using the telephone, the music is muted and the voice is loud and clear. Mind you that my stereo is on a motorcycle traveling 70 plus miles an hour. Hope this helps at least to the clarity of the voice prompt. good luck

When listening to music from my iPhone, navigation voice prompts come over the car speakers and temporarily lower the volume of the music quite a bit.

It mutes the music while the navigation is talking and then resumes the music after it's done.

Tho not specific to your question about navigation prompts, I can say that while using bluetooth w/samsung phone along with the external mic, the sound is muted when I place a call or recieve a call. Hope this helps.

When you have music on, if your navigation is giving instructions, it will lower the music so that you can hear, than bring it back up to regular volume. I found this to be true both when my phone was connected via USB or playing via Bluetooth. If you get calls, the music will be muted. If you get text messages, the music will be lowered just like in navigation. Hope that helps...
